The total cross sections for the 120Te(p,gamma)121I and 120Te(p,n)120I reactions have been measured by the activation method in the effective center-of-mass energies between 2.47 MeV and 7.93 MeV. The targets were prepared by evaporation of 99.4 % isotopically enriched 120Te on Aluminum and Carbon backing foils, and bombarded with proton beams provided by the FN tandem accelerator at the University of Notre Dame. The cross sections and $S$ factors were deduced from the observed gamma ray activity, which was detected off-line by two Clover HPGe detectors mounted in close geometry. The results are presented and compared with the predictions of statistical model calculations using the codes NON-SMOKER and TALYS.
Angular distribution of the 12C(7Li,6He)13N reaction at E(7Li) = 44.0 MeV was measured at the HI-13 tandem accelerator of Beijing, China. Asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) of 13N = 12C + p was derived to be 1.64 $\pm$ 0.11 fm$^{-1/2}$ through distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) analysis. The ANC was then used to deduce the astrophysical $S(E)$ factors and reaction rates for direct capture in 12C(p,g)13N at energies of astrophysical relevance.
In nuclear astrophysics, the experimental scenario is still unclear for BBN relevant energies from 30-300 keV. Here, we report our measurements of cross section and astrophysical S(E) factor for pd capture reaction using proton beam energies 66 keV, 116 keV and 166 keV. Realistic GEANT4 simulations were carried out in order to estimate the energy dependent efficiency of the detector. The measured cross section and astrophysical S(E) factor for three new incident proton energies are found to be in good agreement, within the errors, with the values reported in the literature.
The cross sections of the 162Er(a,g,)166Yb and 162Er(a,n)165Yb reactions have been measured for the first time. The radiative alpha capture reaction cross section was measured from Ec.m. = 16.09 down to Ec.m. = 11.21 MeV, close to the astrophysically relevant region (which lies between 7.8 and 11.48 MeV at 3 GK stellar temperature). The 162Er(a,n)165Yb reaction was studied above the reaction threshold between Ec.m. = 12.19 and 16.09 MeV. The fact that the 162Er(a,g)166Yb cross sections were measured below the (a,n) threshold at first time in this mass region opens the opportunity to study dire…
For the synthesis of the heavy, proton rich isotopes in the astrophysical gamma-process the precise knowledge of alpha-induced cross sections is of high importance. We have initiated a comprehensive study of the 64Zn+alpha system involving the cross section measurement of different reaction channels as well as the elastic scattering at low, astrophysically relevant energies. In this paper the experimental technique and some preliminary results of the 64Zn(alpha,p)67Ga cross section measurement are presented.
(Shorten version of the PRC abstract) Alpha-induced reactions on 127I have been studied using the activation technique in order to provide cross section data for the modeling of the astrophysical gamma process. The relative intensity of the 536.1 keV gamma transition was measured precisely, its uncertainty was reduced from 13% to 4%. By measuring the yield of the characteristic X-rays, the cross sections of the 127I(alpha,gamma)131Cs reaction have been determined for the first time close to the astrophysically relevant energy region, at energies 9.50 < Ec.m. < 15.15$ MeV. The 127I(alpha,n)130C…
For the very first time, the correlation femtoscopy method is applied to a kinematically complete measurement of meson production in the collisions of hadrons. The shape of the two-proton correlation function derived for the pp -> ppeta reaction differs from that for the pp -> pp(pions) and both do not show a peak structure opposite to results determined for inclusive measurements of heavy ion collisions.
The cross sections of the 169Tm(α, γ)173Lu and 169Tm(α,n)172Lu reactions have been measured first time using a new method, by detecting the characteristic X-ray radiation following the electron capturedecay of 172,173Lu. Despite the relatively long half-life of the reaction products (T1/2 = 500 and 6.7 days, respectively) it was possible to measure the cross section of the 169Tm(α,γ)173Lu reaction close to the Gamow window (T9 = 3.5 GK), between Ec.m. = 13.16 and 17.08 MeV. The 169Tm(α,n)172Lu reaction cross section was measured from Ec.m. = 11.21 MeV up to Ec.m. = 17.08 MeV. The experimental …
The evolution of massive stars with very low-metallicities depends critically on the amount of CNO nuclides which they produce. The $^{12}$N($p$,\,$γ$)$^{13}$O reaction is an important branching point in the rap-processes, which are believed to be alternative paths to the slow 3$α$ process for producing CNO seed nuclei and thus could change the fate of massive stars. In the present work, the angular distribution of the $^2$H($^{12}$N,\,$^{13}$O)$n$ proton transfer reaction at $E_{\mathrm{c.m.}}$ = 8.4 MeV has been measured for the first time. Based on the Johnson-Soper approach, the square of …
The cross sections of 151Eu(alpha,gamma)155Tb and 151Eu(alpha,n)154Tb reactions have been measured with the activation method. Some aspects of the measurement are presented here to illustrate the requirements of experimental techniques needed to obtain nuclear data for the astrophysical p-process nucleosynthesis. Preliminary cross section results are also presented and compared with the predictions of statistical model calculations.
We present an analysis of the Lambda(1405) resonance in p+p reactions at a kinetic beam energy of 3.5 GeV, measured by the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES). The resonance is reconstructed in the two charged decay channels Sigma^(+/-) pi^(-/+), with help of a kinematic refit, which improves the mass resolution. The high misidentification of pions and protons as kaons required the development of a sophisticated sideband analysis, which can describe the misidentification background quite well.
Angular distributions of the 7Li(6Li,6Li)7Li elastic scattering and the 7Li(6Li,7Li_{g.s.})6Li, 7Li(6Li,7Li*_{0.48})6Li transfer reactions at Ec.m. = 23.7 MeV were measured with the Q3D magnetic spectrograph. The optical potential of 6Li+7Li was obtained by fitting the elastic scattering differential cross sections. Based on the distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) analysis, spectroscopic factors of 7Li=6Li+n were determined to be 0.73 +- 0.05 and 0.90 +- 0.09 for the ground and first exited states in 7Li, respectively. Using the spectroscopic factors, the cross sections of the 6Li(n,g)7Li…
Astrophysical reaction rates, which are mostly derived from theoretical cross sections, are necessary input to nuclear reaction network simulations for studying the origin of $p$ nuclei. Past experiments have found a considerable difference between theoretical and experimental cross sections in some cases, especially for ($α$,$γ$) reactions at low energy. Therefore, it is important to experimentally test theoretical cross section predictions at low, astrophysically relevant energies. The aim is to measure reaction cross sections of $^{107}$Ag($α$,$γ$)$^{111}$In and $^{107}$Ag($α$,n)$^{110}$In …
Our measurements of $^{195,196}$Pt $γ$-strength functions show a double-humped enhancement in the $E_γ= 4-8$ MeV region. For the first time, the detailed shape of these resonances is revealed for excitation energies in the quasicontinuum. We demonstrate that the corresponding neutron-capture cross sections and astrophysical reaction rates are increased by up to a factor of 2 when these newly observed pygmy resonances are included. These results lend credence to theoretical predictions of enhanced reaction rates due to such pygmy resonances and hence are important for a better understanding of …
The $^{12}$C($α,γ$)$^{16}$O reaction has a key role in nuclear astrophysics. A multilevel R-matrix analysis was used to make extrapolations of the astrophysical S factor for this reaction to the stellar energy of 300 keV. The statistical precision of the S-factor extrapolation was determined by performing multiple fits to existing randomized E1 and E2 ground state data, according to experimental errors. The impact of a future proposed experiment at Jefferson Laboratory (JLab) was assessed within this framework. The proposed JLab experiment will make use of a high-intensity low-energy bremsstra…
Resonances just above the proton threshold in 30S affect the 29P(p,gamma)30S reaction under astrophysical conditions. The (p,gamma)-reaction rate is currently determined indirectly and depends on the properties of the relevant resonances. We present here a method for finding the ratio between the proton and gamma partial widths of resonances in 30S. The widths are determined from the beta-2p and beta-p-gamma decay of 31Ar, which is produced at the ISOLDE facility at the European research organization CERN. Experimental limits on the ratio between the proton and gamma partial widths for astroph…
In the given paper the total inelastic cross-sections of the reactions of protons and deuterons on nuclear targets of enriched tin isotopes were compared. The factorization of cross-sections of reactions was discussed. Furthermore, the comparison of theoretical estimations on total inelastic cross-sections with corresponding experimental ones was made.
The $^{12}$C($α,γ$)$^{16}$O reaction, an important component of stellar helium burning, has a key role in nuclear astrophysics. It has direct impact on the evolution and final state of massive stars and also influences the elemental abundances resulting from nucleosynthesis in such stars. Providing a reliable estimate for the energy dependence of this reaction at stellar helium burning temperatures has been a longstanding and important goal. In this work, we study the role of potential new measurements of the reaction, $^{16}$O($e,e'α$)$^{12}$C reaction, in reducing the overall uncertainty. A …
The stellar reaction rates of radiative $α$-capture reactions on heavy isotopes are of crucial importance for the $γ$ process network calculations. These rates are usually derived from statistical model calculations, which need to be validated, but the experimental database is very scarce. This paper presents the results of $α$-induced reaction cross section measurements on iridium isotopes carried out at first close to the astrophysically relevant energy region. Thick target yields of $^{191}$Ir($α$,$γ$)$^{195}$Au, $^{191}$Ir($α$,n)$^{194}$Au, $^{193}$Ir($α$,n)$^{196m}$Au, $^{193}$Ir($α$,n)$^…
Measurement of nuclear cross sections at astrophysical energies involving unstable species is one of the most challenging tasks in experimental nuclear physics. The use of indirect methods is often unavoidable in this scenario. In this paper the Trojan Horse Method is applied for the first time to a radioactive ion beam induced reaction studying the $^{18}$F($p,α$)$^{15}$O process at low energies relevant to astrophysics via the three body reaction $^{2}$H($^{18}$F,$α^{15}$O)n. The knowledge of the $^{18}$F($p, α$)$^{15}$O reaction rate is crucial to understand the nova explosion phenomena. Th…
Excitation function of proton induced nuclear reactions on lead for production of $^{206,205,204,203,202,201g}$Bi, $^{203cum,202m,201cum}$Pb and $^{202cum,201cum,200cum,199cum}$Tl radionuclides were measured up to 36 MeV by using activation method, stacked foil irradiation technique and $γ$-ray spectrometry. The new experimental data were compared with the few earlier experimental results and with the predictions of the EMPIRE3.1, ALICE-IPPE (MENDL2p) and TALYS (TENDL-2012) theoretical reaction codes.
The $γ$-process in core-collapse and/or type Ia supernova explosions is thought to explain the origin of the majority of the so-called $p$ nuclei (the 35 proton-rich isotopes between Se and Hg). Reaction rates for $γ$-process reaction network studies have to be predicted using Hauser-Feshbach statistical model calculations. Recent investigations have shown problems in the prediction of $α$-widths at astrophysical energies which are an essential input for the statistical model. It has an impact on the reliability of abundance predictions in the upper mass range of the $p$ nuclei. With the measu…
In this report one of the methods used for the luminosity determination for the experiment performed by WASA Collaboration to search for 3He-eta mesic nuclei is presented. The method is based on the analysis of pd -> 3He eta process.
Reactions involving the group of nuclei commonly known as p nuclei are part of the nucleosynthetic mechanisms at astrophysical sites. The $^{113}$In nucleus is such a case with several open questions regarding its origin at extreme stellar environments. In this work, the experimental study of the cross sections of the radiative proton-capture reaction $^{112}$Cd(p,$γ$)$^{113}$In is attempted for the first time at energies lying inside the Gamow window with an isotopically enriched $^{112}$Cd target. Two different techniques, the in-beam $γ$-ray spectroscopy and the activation method, have been…
A new astrophysical reaction rate for $^{12}$C($α,γ$)$^{16}$O has been evaluated on the basis of a global R-matrix fitting to the available experimental data. The reaction rates of $^{12}$C($α,γ$)$^{16}$O for stellar temperatures between 0.04 $\leq$ $T_9$ $\leq$ 10 are provided in a tabular form and by an analytical fitting expression. At $T_9$ = 0.2, the reaction rate is (7.83 $\pm$ 0.35)$\times10^{15}$ $\rm{cm^3 mol^{-1} s^{-1}}$, where stellar helium burning occurs.
Two effects relevant for the study of astrophysical reaction rates: gamma transitions in capture reactions and Coulomb suppression of the stellar enhancement
The relevant energy ranges for stellar nuclear reactions are introduced. Low-energy compound and direct reactions are discussed. Stellar modifications of the cross sections are presented. Implications for experiments are outlined.
The hindrance phenomenon of heavy-ion fusion cross sections at deep subbarrier energies often accompanies a maximum of an astrophysical $S$ factor at a threshold energy for fusion hindrance. We argue that this phenomenon can naturally be explained when the fusion excitation function is fitted with two potentials, with a larger (smaller) logarithmic slope at energies lower (higher) than the threshold energy. This analysis clearly suggests that the astrophysical $S$ factor provides a convenient tool to analyze the deep subbarrier hindrance phenomenon, even though the $S$ factor may have a strong…
The theoretical cross section calculations for the astrophysical $p$ process are needed because the most of the related reactions are technically very difficult to be measured in the laboratory. Even if the reaction was measured, most of the measured reactions have been carried out at the higher energy range from the astrophysical energies. Therefore, almost all cross sections needed for $p$ process simulation has to be theoretically calculated or extrapolated to the astrophysical energies. The $^{112}$Sn($α$,$γ$)$^{116}$Te is an important reaction for the $p$ process nucleosynthesis. The theo…
A relationship between the Coulomb inclusive break-up probability and the radiative capture reaction rate for weakly-bound three-body systems is established. This direct link provides a robust procedure to estimate the reaction rate for nuclei of astrophysical interest by measuring inclusive break-up processes at different energies and angles. This might be an advantageous alternative to the determination of reaction rates from the measurement of $B(E1)$ distributions through exclusive Coulomb break-up experiments. In addition, it provides a reference to assess the validity of different theore…
A setup designed to study photonuclear reactions at astrophysical energies - an active target Time Projection Chamber was developed and constructed at the Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw. The device was successfully employed in two experiments at the Institute of Nuclear Physics Polish Academy of Sciences in Cracow, in which γ- and neutron-induced reactions with CO2 gas target were measured. The reaction products were detected and their momenta reconstructed. Preliminary results are shown.
The plasma astrophysical S factor for the 3He(D, p)4He fusion reaction was measured for the first time at temperatures of few keV, using the interaction of intense ultrafast laser pulses with molecular deuterium clusters mixed with 3He atoms. Different proportions of D2 and 3He or CD4 and 3He were mixed in the gas jet target in order to allow the measurement of the cross-section for the 3He(D, p)4He reaction. The yield of 14.7 MeV protons from the 3He(D, p)4He reaction was measured in order to extract the astrophysical S factor at low energies. Our result is in agreement with other S factor pa…
Based on an isospin dependent transport model IBUU, effects of high density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy in the proton-rich reaction $^{22}$Si+$^{22}$Si at a beam energy of 400 MeV/nucleon are studied. It is found that the symmetry energy affects $π^{+}$ production more than $π^{-}$. More interestingly, comparing with neutron-rich reactions, for $π^{-}/π^{+}$ and dense matter's N/Z ratios, effects of symmetry energy in the proton-rich reaction both show contrary behaviors. The practical experiment by using the proton-rich reaction $^{22}$Si+$^{40}$Ca to study nuclear symmetry energy are…
In a recent work, the cross section measurement of the 64Zn(p,alpha)61Cu reaction was used to prove that the standard alpha-nucleus optical potentials used in astrophysical network calculation fail to reproduce the experimental data at energies relevant for heavy element nucleosynthesis. In the present paper the analysis of the obtained experimental data is continued by comparing the results with the predictions using different parameters. It is shown that the recently suggested modification of the standard optical potential leads to a better description of the data.
Proton-${}^3$H elastic scattering and charge-exchange reaction ${}^3$H$(p,n){}^3$He in the energy regime above four-nucleon breakup threshold are described in the momentum-space transition operator framework. Fully converged results are obtained using realistic two-nucleon potentials and two-proton Coulomb force as dynamic input. Differential cross section, proton analyzing power, outgoing neutron polarization, and proton-to-neutron polarization transfer coefficients are calculated between 6 and 30 MeV proton beam energy. Good agreement with the experimental data is found for the differential …
In the model calculations of heavy element nucleosynthesis processes the nuclear reaction rates are taken from statistical model calculations which utilize various nuclear input parameters. It is found that in the case of reactions involving alpha particles the calculations bear a high uncertainty owing to the largely unknown low energy alpha-nucleus optical potential. Experiments are typically restricted to higher energies and therefore no direct astrophysical consequences can be drawn. In the present work a (p,alpha) reaction is used for the first time to study the alpha-nucleus optical pote…
The Trojan Horse Method was applied for the first time to a Radioactive Ion Beam induced reaction to study the reaction $^{18}$F(p,$α$)$^{15}$O via the three body reaction $^{18}$F(d,$α$ $^{15}$O)n at the low energies relevant for astrophysics. The abundance of $^{18}$F in Nova explosions is an important issue for the understanding of this astrophysical phenomenon. For this reason it is necessary to study the nuclear reactions that produce or destroy $^{18}$F in Novae. $^{18}$F(p,$α$)$^{15}$O is one of the main $^{18}$F destruction channels. Preliminary results are presented in this paper.
Background: Eclipse effect of the neutron and proton in a deuteron target is essential to correctly describe high-energy deuteron scattering. The nucleus-deuteron scattering needs information not only on the nucleus-proton but also the nucleus-neutron interaction, for which no direct measurement of the nucleus-neutron cross sections is available for unstable nuclei. Purpose: We systematically evaluated the total reaction cross sections by a deuteron target to explore the feasibility of extracting the nucleus-neutron interaction from measurable cross sections. Methods: High-energy nucleus-deute…
The potential model for nuclear astrophysical reactions requires a considerably shallow nuclear potential when a square-well potential is employed to fit experimental data. We discuss the origin of this apparently different behavior from that obtained with a smooth Woods-Saxon potential, for which a deep potential is often employed. We argue that due to the sharp change of the potential at the boundary the radius parameter tends to be large in the square-well model, which results in a large absorption radius. The wave function then needs to be suppressed in the absorption region, which can eve…
The synthesis of heavy, proton rich isotopes in the astrophysical gamma-process proceeds through photodisintegration reactions. For the improved understanding of the process, the rates of the involved nuclear reactions must be known. The reaction 128Ba(g,a)124Xe was found to affect the abundance of the p nucleus 124Xe. Since the stellar rate for this reaction cannot be determined by a measurement directly, the aim of the present work was to measure the cross section of the inverse 124Xe(a,g)128Ba reaction and to compare the results with statistical model predictions. Of great importance is the…
Fragments productions in spallation reactions are key infrastructure data for various applications. Based on the empirical parameterizations {\sc spacs}, a Bayesian-neural-network (BNN) approach is established to predict the fragment cross sections in the proton induced spallation reactions. A systematic investigation have been performed for the measured proton induced spallation reactions of systems ranging from the intermediate to the heavy nuclei and the incident energy ranging from 168 MeV/u to 1500 MeV/u. By learning the residuals between the experimental measurements and the {\sc spacs} …
