We present several multi-variable generating functions for a new pattern matching condition on the wreath product of the cyclic group and the symmetric group. Our new pattern matching condition requires that the underlying permutations match in the usual sense of pattern matching for the symmetric group and that the corresponding sequence of signs match in the sense of words, rather than the exact equality of signs which has been previously studied. We produce the generating functions for the number of matches that occur in elements of the wreath product for any pattern of length 2 by applying appropriate homomorphisms from the ring of symmetric functions over an infinite number of variables to simple symmetric function identities. We also provide multi-variable generating functions for the distribution of non-overlapping matches and for the number of elements of the wreath product which have exactly 2 matches which do not overlap for several patterns of length 2.
In this paper, we extend to a non-consecutive case, the study of the pattern matching condition on the wreath product of the cyclic group and the symmetric group initiated by the authors in a previous paper. The main focus of our paper is (colored) patterns of length 2, although a number of enumerative results for longer patterns are also presented. A new non-trivial bijective interpretation for the Catalan numbers is found, in terms of simultaneously bi-avoiding two patterns in a wreath product.
We give a partial solution a question of Grigorchuk, Nekrashevych, Sushchanskii and Šunik by giving an algorithm to test whether a finite state element of an infinite iterated (permutational) wreath product $\hat G = \mathbb Z/k\mathbb Z\wr \mathbb Z/k\mathbb Z\wr \mathbb Z/k\mathbb Z\wr >...$ of cyclic groups of order $n$ acts spherically transitively. We can also decide whether two finite state spherically transitive elements of $\hat G$ are conjugate. For general infinite iterated wreath products, an algorithm is presented to determine whether two finite state automorphisms have the same im…
The generalized wreath product of permutation groups is introduced. By means of it we study the schurity problem for S-rings over a cyclic group $G$ and the automorphism groups of them. Criteria for the schurity and non-schurity of the generalized wreath product of two such S-rings are obtained. As a byproduct of the developed theory we prove that $G$ is a Schur group whenever the total number $Ω(n)$ of prime factors of the integer $n=|G|$ is at most 3. Moreover, we describe the structure of a non-schurian S-ring over $G$ when $Ω(n)=4$. The latter result implies in particular that if $n=p^3q$ …
Let $\mathbb Z/d\mathbb Z \wr \mathfrak S_n$ denote the wreath product of the cyclic group $\mathbb Z/d\mathbb Z$ with the symmetric group $\mathfrak S_n$. We define generating functions for monomial (induced one-dimensional) characters of $\mathbb Z/d\mathbb Z \wr \mathfrak S_n$ and express these in terms of determinants and permanents. This extends work of Littlewood ({\em The Theory of Group Characters and Representations of Groups}, 1940) and Merris and Watkins ({\em Linear Algebra Appl.}, {\bf 64}, 1985) on generating functions for the monomial characters of $\mathfrak S_n$.
We generalize two bijections due to Garsia and Gessel to compute the generating functions of the two vector statistics $(\des_G, \maj,\ell_G, \col)$ and $(\des_G, \ides_G, \maj, \imaj, \col, \icol)$ over the wreath product of a symmetric group by a cyclic group. Here $\des_G$, $\ell_G$, $\maj$, $\col$, $\ides_G$, $\imaj_G$, and $\icol$ denote the number of descents, length, major index, color weight, inverse descents, inverse major index, and inverse color weight, respectively. Our main formulas generalize and unify several known identities due to Brenti, Carlitz, Chow-Gessel, Garsia-Gessel, a…
Subgroups of the symmetric group $S_n$ act on powers of chains $C^n$ by permuting coordinates, and induce automorphisms of the ordered sets $C^n$. The quotients defined are candidates for symmetric chain decompositions. We establish this for some families of groups in order to enlarge the collection of subgroups $G$ of the symmetric group $S_n$ for which the quotient $B_n/G$ obtained from the $G$-orbits on the Boolean lattice $B_n$ is a symmetric chain order. The methods are also used to provide an elementary proof that quotients of powers of SCOs by cyclic groups are SCOs.
A classic problem in enumerative combinatorics is to count the number of derangements, that is, permutations with no fixed point. Inspired by a recent generalization to facet derangements of the hypercube by Gordon and McMahon, we generalize this problem to enumerating derangements in the wreath product of any finite cyclic group with the symmetric group. We also give q- and (q, t)-analogs for cyclic derangements, generalizing results of Brenti and Gessel.
In 1997 Clarke et al. studied a $q$-analogue of Euler's difference table for $n!$ using a key bijection $Ψ$ on symmetric groups. In this paper we extend their results to the wreath product of a cyclic group with the symmetric group. In particular we obtain a new mahonian statistic \emph{fmaf} on wreath products. We also show that Foata and Han's two recent transformations on the symmetric groups provide indeed a factorization of $Ψ$.
In [F. Caselli, Involutory reflection groups and their models, J. Algebra 24 (2010), 370--393] it is constructed a uniform Gelfand model for all non-exceptional irreducible complex reflection groups which are involutory. This model can be naturally decomposed into the direct sum of submodules indexed by symmetric conjugacy classes, and in this paper we present a simple combinatorial description of the irreducible decomposition of these submodules if the group is the wreath product of a cyclic group with a symmetric group. This is attained by showing that such decomposition is compatible with t…
Eulerian quasisymmetric functions were introduced by Shareshian and Wachs in order to obtain a q-analog of Euler's exponential generating function formula for the Eulerian numbers. They are defined via the symmetric group, and applying the stable and nonstable principal specializations yields formulas for joint distributions of permutation statistics. We consider the wreath product of the cyclic group with the symmetric group, also known as the group of colored permutations. We use this group to introduce colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which are a generalization of Eulerian quasisy…
The paper concerns the automorphism groups of Cayley graphs over cyclic groups which have a rational spectrum (rational circulant graphs for short). With the aid of the techniques of Schur rings it is shown that the problem is equivalent to consider the automorphism groups of orthogonal group block structures of cyclic groups. Using this observation, the required groups are expressed in terms of generalized wreath products of symmetric groups.
In this article we study the automorphism groups of binary cyclic codes. In particular, we provide explicit constructions for codes whose automorphism groups can be described as (a) direct products of two symmetric groups or (b) iterated wreath products of several symmetric groups. Interestingly, some of the codes we consider also arise in the context of regular lattice graphs and permutation decoding.
We define the cyclic matching sequencibility of a graph to be the largest integer $d$ such that there exists a cyclic ordering of its edges so that every $d$ consecutive edges in the cyclic ordering form a matching. We show that the cyclic matching sequencibility of $K_{2m}$ and $K_{2m+1}$ equal $m-1$.
The recently developed theory of Schur rings over a finite cyclic group is generalized to Schur rings over a ring R being a product of Galois rings of coprime characteristics. It is proved that if the characteristic of R is odd, then as in the cyclic group case any pure Schur ring over R is the tensor product of a pure cyclotomic ring and Schur rings of rank 2 over non-fields. Moreover, it is shown that in contrast to the cyclic group case there are non-pure Schur rings over R that are not generalized wreath products.
The cyclic matching sequenceability of a simple graph $G$, denoted $\mathrm{cms}(G)$, is the largest integer $s$ for which there exists a cyclic ordering of the edges of $G$ so that every set of $s$ consecutive edges forms a matching. In this paper we consider the minimum cyclic matching sequenceability of $k$-regular graphs. We completely determine this for $2$-regular graphs, and give bounds for $k \geq 3$.
A new descent set statistic on involutions, defined geometrically via their interpretation as matchings, is introduced in this paper, and shown to be equi-distributed with the standard one. This concept is then applied to construct explicit cyclic descent extensions on involutions, standard Young tableaux and Motzkin paths. Schur-positivity of the associated quasisymmetric functions follows.
The cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP) was introduced by Reiner, Stanton, and White to study combinatorial structures with actions of cyclic groups. The crucial step is to find a polynomial, for example a q-analog, that satisfies the CSP conditions for an action. This polynomial will give us a lot of information about the symmetry and structure of the set under the action. In this paper, we study the cyclic sieving phenomenon of the cyclic group $C_{2n}$ acting on $P_{n,k}$, which is the set of matchings of $2n$ points on a circle with $k$ crossings. The noncrossing matchings ($k=0$) was recently…
The wreath product W(r,n) of the cyclic group of order r and the symmetric group S_n acts on the corresponding projective hyperplane complement, and on its wonderful compactification as defined by De Concini and Procesi. We give a formula for the characters of the representations of W(r,n) on the cohomology groups of this compactification, extending the result of Ginzburg and Kapranov in the r=1 case. As a corollary, we get a formula for the Betti numbers which generalizes the result of Yuzvinsky in the r=2 case. Our method involves applying to the nested-set stratification a generalization of…
Consider a cyclically ordered collection of $r$ equinumerous agent sets with strict preferences of every agent over the agents from the next agent set. A weakly stable cyclic matching is a partition of the set of agents into disjoint union of $r$-long cycles, one agent from each set per cycle, such that there are no destabilizing $r$-long cycles, i.e. cycles in which every agent strictly prefers its successor to its successor in the matching. Assuming that the preferences are uniformly random and independent, we show that the expected number of stable matchings grows with $n$ (cardinality of e…
Given $n$ men, $n$ women, and $n$ dogs, we assume that each man has a complete preference list of women, while each woman does a complete preference list of dogs, and each dog does a complete preference list of men. We study the so-called 3D-CYC problem, i.e., a three-dimensional problem with cyclic preferences. We understand a matching as a collection of $n$ nonintersecting triples, each of which contains a man, a woman, and a dog. A matching is said to be nonstable, if one can find a man, a woman, and a dog, which belong to different triples and prefer each other to their current partners in…
Given $n$ men, $n$ women, and $n$ dogs, each man has an incomplete preference list of women, each woman does an incomplete preference list of dogs, and each dog does an incomplete preference list of men. We understand a family as a triple consisting of one man, one woman, and one dog such that each of them enters in the preference list of the corresponding agent. We do a matching as a collection of nonintersecting families (some agents, possibly, remain single). A matching is said to be nonstable, if one can find a man, a woman, and a dog which do not live together currently but each of them w…
We give a combinatorial description (including explicit differential-form bases) for the cohomology groups of the space of n distinct nonzero complex numbers, with coefficients in rank-one local systems which are of finite monodromy around the coordinate hyperplanes and trivial monodromy around all other hyperplanes. In the case where the local system is equivariant for the symmetric group, we write the cohomology groups as direct sums of inductions of one-dimensional characters of subgroups. This relies on an equivariant description of the Orlik-Solomon algebras of full monomial reflection gr…
We study the generating polynomial of the flag major index with each one-dimensional character, called signed Mahonian polynomial, over the colored permutation group, the wreath product of a cyclic group with the symmetric group. Using the insertion lemma of Han and Haglund-Loehr-Remmel and a signed extension established by Eu et al., we derive the signed Mahonian polynomial over the quotients of parabolic subgroups of the colored permutation group, for a variety of systems of coset representatives in terms of subsequence restrictions. This generalizes the related work over parabolic quotients…
The question of finding sets of monomials which are removable from a generic homogeneous polynomial through a linear change in its variables was raised by E. K. Wakeford in 1916. This linear algebra question motivated J. Losonczy to define the concept of acyclic matchings in Z n, and later in abelian groups. In this paper, we give a constructive approach to study the acyclic matchings in cyclic groups. We also introduce the notion of weakly matched subsets and investigate its relation with matchings in abelian groups.
We derive a formula for the entries in the change-of-basis matrix between Young's seminormal and natural representations of the symmetric group. These entries are determined as sums over weighted paths in the weak Bruhat graph on standard tableaux, and we show that they can be computed recursively as the weighted sum of at most two previously-computed entries in the matrix. We generalize our results to work for affine Hecke algebras, Ariki-Koike algebras, Iwahori-Hecke algebras, and complex reflection groups given by the wreath product of a finite cyclic group with the symmetric group.
We introduce Macdonald polynomials indexed by $n$-tuples of partitions and characterized by certain orthogonality and triangularity relations. We prove that they can be explicitly given as products of ordinary Macdonald polynomials depending on special alphabets. With this factorization in hand, we establish their most basic properties, such as explicit formulas for their norm-squared, evaluation and reproducing kernel. Moreover, we show that the $q,t$-Kostka coefficients associated to the multi-Macdonald polynomials are positive and correspond to $q,t$-analogs of the dimensions of the irreduc…
The aim of this work is to extend the study of super-coinvariant polynomials, to the case of the generalized symmetric group $G_{n,m}$, defined as the wreath product $C_m\wr§_n$ of the symmetric group by the cyclic group. We define a quasi-symmetrizing action of $G_{n,m}$ on $\Q[x_1,...,x_n]$, analogous to those defined by Hivert in the case of $§_n$. The polynomials invariant under this action are called quasi-invariant, and we define super-coinvariant polynomials as polynomials orthogonal, with respect to a given scalar product, to the quasi-invariant polynomials with no constant term. Our m…
We prove that $(\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_n \times \mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_{n-1}, \text{diag} (\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_{n-1}) )$ is a symmetric Gelfand pair, where $\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_n$ is the wreath product of the cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}_k$ with the symmetric group $\mathcal{S}_n.$ The proof is based on the study of the $\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_{n-1}$-conjugacy classes of $\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_n.$ We define the generalized characters of $\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_n$ using the zonal spherical functions of $(\mathbb{Z}_k \wr \mathcal{S}_n \times \mathbb{…
In a finite abelian group $G$, define an additive matching to be a collection of triples $(x_i, y_i, z_i)$ such that $x_i + y_j + z_k = 0$ if and only if $i = j = k$. In the case that $G = \mathbb{F}_2^n$, Kleinberg, building on work of Croot-Lev-Pach and Ellenberg-Gijswijt, proved a polynomial upper bound on the size of an additive matching. Fox and Lovász used this to deduce polynomial bounds on Green's arithmetic removal lemma in $\mathbb{F}_2^n$. If $G$ is taken to be an arbitrary finite abelian group, the questions of bounding the size of an additive matching and giving bounds for Green's…
