Subgroups of the symmetric group $S_n$ act on powers of chains $C^n$ by permuting coordinates, and induce automorphisms of the ordered sets $C^n$. The quotients defined are candidates for symmetric chain decompositions. We establish this for some families of groups in order to enlarge the collection of subgroups $G$ of the symmetric group $S_n$ for which the quotient $B_n/G$ obtained from the $G$-orbits on the Boolean lattice $B_n$ is a symmetric chain order. The methods are also used to provide an elementary proof that quotients of powers of SCOs by cyclic groups are SCOs.
We investigate the $α$-colored Eulerian polynomials and a notion of descents introduced in a recent paper of Hedmark and show that such polynomials can be computed as a polynomial encoding descents computed over a quotient of the wreath product $\mathbb{Z}_α\wr\mathfrak{S}_n$. Moreover, we consider the flag descent statistic computed over this same quotient and find that the flag Eulerian polynomial remains palindromic. We prove that the flag descent polynomial is palindromic over this same quotient by giving a combinatorial proof that the flag descent statistic is symmetrically distributed ov…
We construct the first infinite families of locally arc transitive graphs with the property that the automorphism group has two orbits on vertices and is quasiprimitive on exactly one orbit, of twisted wreath type. This work contributes to Giudici, Li and Praeger's program for the classification of locally arc transitive graphs by showing that the star normal quotient twisted wreath category also contains infinitely many graphs.
Let $r$ be a positive integer and let $G_n$ be the reflection group of $n \times n$ monomial matrices whose entries are $r^{th}$ complex roots of unity and let $k \leq n$. We define and study two new graded quotients $R_{n,k}$ and $S_{n,k}$ of the polynomial ring $\mathbb{C}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ in $n$ variables. When $k = n$, both of these quotients coincide with the classical coinvariant algebra attached to $G_n$. The algebraic properties of our quotients are governed by the combinatorial properties of $k$-dimensional faces in the Coxeter complex attached to $G_n$ (in the case of $R_{n,k}$) and…
We study the distribution of the major index with sign on some parabolic quotients of the symmetric group, extending and generalizing simultaneously results Gessel-Simion and Adin-Gessel-Roichman, and on some special trees that we call rakes. We further consider and compute the distribution of the flag-major index on some parabolic quotients of wreath products and other related groups. All these distributions turn out to have very simple factorization formulas.
In [F. Caselli, Involutory reflection groups and their models, J. Algebra 24 (2010), 370--393] it is constructed a uniform Gelfand model for all non-exceptional irreducible complex reflection groups which are involutory. This model can be naturally decomposed into the direct sum of submodules indexed by symmetric conjugacy classes, and in this paper we present a simple combinatorial description of the irreducible decomposition of these submodules if the group is the wreath product of a cyclic group with a symmetric group. This is attained by showing that such decomposition is compatible with t…
We study the generating polynomial of the flag major index with each one-dimensional character, called signed Mahonian polynomial, over the colored permutation group, the wreath product of a cyclic group with the symmetric group. Using the insertion lemma of Han and Haglund-Loehr-Remmel and a signed extension established by Eu et al., we derive the signed Mahonian polynomial over the quotients of parabolic subgroups of the colored permutation group, for a variety of systems of coset representatives in terms of subsequence restrictions. This generalizes the related work over parabolic quotients…
We prove that if a finite group $H$ has a generalized involution model, as defined by Bump and Ginzburg, then the wreath product $H \wr S_n$ also has a generalized involution model. This extends the work of Baddeley concerning involution models for wreath products. As an application, we construct a Gelfand model for wreath products of the form $A \wr S_n$ with $A$ abelian, and give an alternate proof of a recent result due to Adin, Postnikov, and Roichman describing a particularly elegant Gelfand model for the wreath product $\ZZ_r \wr S_n$. We conclude by discussing some notable properties of…
For a permutation group $G$ acting on a set $V$, a subset $I$ of $G$ is said to be an intersecting set if for every pair of elements $g,h\in I$ there exists $v \in V$ such that $g(v) = h(v)$. The intersection density $ρ(G)$ of a transitive permutation group $G$ is the maximum value of the quotient $|I|/|G_v|$ where $G_v$ is a stabilizer of a point $v\in V$ and $I$ runs over all intersecting sets in $G$. If $G_v$ is the largest intersecting set in $G$ then $G$ is said to have the Erdős-Ko-Rado (EKR)-property, and moreover, $G$ has the strict-EKR-property if every intersecting set of maximum siz…
The quotient of a Boolean algebra by a cyclic group is proven to have a symmetric chain decomposition. This generalizes earlier work of Griggs, Killian and Savage on the case of prime order, giving an explicit construction for any order, prime or composite. The combinatorial map specifying how to proceed downward in a symmetric chain is shown to be a natural cyclic analogue of the $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ lowering operator in the theory of crystal bases.
The multiplicity-free subgroups (strong Gelfand subgroups) of wreath products are investigated. Various useful reduction arguments are presented. In particular, we show that for every finite group $F$, the wreath product $F\wr S_λ$, where $S_λ$ is a Young subgroup, is multiplicity-free if and only if $λ$ is a partition with at most two parts, the second part being 0,1, or 2. Furthermore, we classify all multiplicity-free subgroups of hyperoctahedral groups. Along the way, we derive various decomposition formulas for the induced representations from some special subgroups of hyperoctahedral gro…
R. Canfield has conjectured that for all subgroups G of the automorphism group of the Boolean lattice B(n) (which can be regarded as the symmetric group S(n)) the quotient order B(n)/G is a symmetric chain order. We provide a straightforward proof of a generalization of a result of K. K. Jordan: namely, B(n)/G is an SCO whenever G is generated by powers of disjoint cycles. The symmetric chain decompositions of Greene and Kleitman provide the basis for partitions of these quotients.
In this paper we prove that the quotient of any real or complex moment-angle complex by any closed subgroup in the naturally acting compact torus on it is equivariantly homotopy equivalent to the homotopy colimit of a certain toric diagram. For any quotient we prove an equivariant homeomorphism generalizing the well-known Davis-Januszkiewicz construction for quasitoric manifolds and small covers. We deduce formality of the corresponding Borel construction space under the natural assumption on the group action in the complex case leading to the new description of the equivariant cohomology for …
We study the complex reflection groups G(r,p,n). By considering these groups as subgroups of the wreath products Z_r wr S_n, and by using Clifford theory, we define combinatorial parameters and descent representations of G(r,p,n), previously known for classical Weyl groups. One of these parameters is the flag major index, which also has an important role in the decomposition of these representations into irreducibles. A Carlitz type identity relating the combinatorial parameters with the degrees of the group, is presented.
We generalise a fundamental graph-theoretical fact, stating that every element of the cycle space of a graph is a sum of edge-disjoint cycles, to arbitrary continua. To achieve this we replace graph cycles by topological circles, and replace the cycle space of a graph by a new homology group for continua which is a quotient of the first singular homology group $H_1$. This homology seems to be particularly apt for studying spaces with infinitely generated $H_1$, e.g. infinite graphs or fractals.
