The multiplicity-free subgroups (strong Gelfand subgroups) of wreath products are investigated. Various useful reduction arguments are presented. In particular, we show that for every finite group $F$, the wreath product $F\wr S_λ$, where $S_λ$ is a Young subgroup, is multiplicity-free if and only if $λ$ is a partition with at most two parts, the second part being 0,1, or 2. Furthermore, we classify all multiplicity-free subgroups of hyperoctahedral groups. Along the way, we derive various decomposition formulas for the induced representations from some special subgroups of hyperoctahedral groups.
Introduced by Kawanaka in order to find the unipotent representations of finite groups of Lie type, generalized Gelfand--Graev characters have remained somewhat mysterious. Even in the case of the finite general linear groups, the combinatorics of their decompositions has not been worked out. This paper re-interprets Kawanaka's definition in type $A$ in a way that gives far more flexibility in computations. We use these alternate constructions to show how to obtain generalized Gelfand--Graev representations directly from the maximal unipotent subgroups. We also explicitly decompose the corresp…
Let $Γ$ be a finite group. Consider the wreath product $G_n := Γ^n \rtimes S_n$ and the subgroup $K_n := Δ_n \times S_n\subseteq G_n$, where $S_n$ is the symmetric group and $Δ_n$ is the diagonal subgroup of $Γ^n$. For certain values of $n$ (which depend on the group $Γ$), the pair $(G_n, K_n)$ is a Gelfand pair. It is not known for all finite groups which values of $n$ result in Gelfand pairs. Building off the work of Benson--Ratcliff, we obtain a result which simplifies the computation of multiplicities of irreducible representations in certain tensor product representations, then apply this…
This paper is motivated by several combinatorial actions of the affine Weyl group of type $C_n$. Addressing a question of David Vogan, it was shown in an earlier paper that these permutation representations are essentialy multiplicity-free~\cite{arXiv:2009.13880}. However, the Gelfand trick, which was indispensable in~\cite{arXiv:2009.13880} to prove this property for types $C_n$ and $B_n$, is not applicable for other classical types. Here we present a unified approach to fully answer the analogous question for all irreducible affine Weyl groups. Given a finite Weyl group $W$ with maximal para…
A strong Gelfand pair (G,H) is a group G together with a subgroup H such that every irreducible character of H induces a multiplicity-free character of G. We classify the strong Gelfand pairs of the special linear groups SL(2, p) where p is a prime.
In this paper we introduce an intrinsic version of the classical induction of representations for a subgroup $H$ of a (finite) group $G$, called here {\em geometric induction}, which associates to any, not necessarily transitive, $G$-set $X$ and any representation of the action groupoid $A(G,X)$ associated to $G$ and $X$, a representation of the group $G$. We show that geometric induction, applied to one dimensional characters of the action groupoid of a suitable $G$-set $X$ affords a Gelfand Model for $G$ in the case where $G$ is either the symmetric group or the projective general linear gro…
Let $\mathbb{H}^{n}$ be the $(2n+1)$-dimensional Heisenberg group, and let $K$ be a compact subgroup of U(n), such that $(K,\mathbb{H}^{n})$ is a Gelfand pair. Also assume that the $K$-action on $\mathbb{C}^n$ is polar. We prove a Hecke-Bochner identity associated to the Gelfand pair $(K,\mathbb{H}^{n})$. For the special case $K=U(n)$, this was proved by Geller, giving a formula for the Weyl transform of a function $f$ of the type $f=Pg$, where $g$ is a radial function, and $P$ a bigraded solid U(n)-harmonic polynomial. Using our general Hecke-Bochner identity we also characterize (under some …
For a locally compact, totally disconnected group $G$, a subgroup $H$ and a character $χ:H \to \mathbb{C}^{\times}$ we define a Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}_χ$ and explore the connection between commutativity of $\mathcal{H}_χ$ and the $χ$-Gelfand property of $(G,H)$, i.e. the property $\mathrm{dim}_\mathbb{C}(ρ^*)^{(H,χ^{-1})} \leq 1$ for every $ρ\in \mathrm{Irr}(G)$, the irreducible representations of $G$. We show that the conditions of the Gelfand-Kazhdan criterion imply commutativity of $\mathcal{H}_χ$, and verify in several simple cases that commutativity of $\mathcal{H}_χ$ is equivalent to…
Let $N$ be a connected and simply connected nilpotent Lie group, and let $K$ be a subgroup of the automorphism group of $N$. We say that the pair $(K,N)$ is a nilpotent Gelfand pair if $L^1_K(N)$ is an abelian algebra under convolution. In this document we establish a geometric model for the Gelfand spectra of nilpotent Gelfand pairs $(K,N)$ where the $K$-orbits in the center of $N$ have a one-parameter cross section and satisfy a certain non-degeneracy condition. More specifically, we show that the one-to-one correspondence between the set $Δ(K,N)$ of bounded $K$-spherical functions on $N$ an…
Let G be a complex semisimple group and U its maximal unipotent subgroup. We study the algebra D(G/U) of algebraic differential operators on G/U and also its quasi-classical counterpart: the algebra of regular functions on the cotangent bundle. A long time ago, Gelfand and Graev have constructed an action of the Weyl group on D(G/U) by algebra automorphisms. The Gelfand-Graev construction was not algebraic, it involved analytic methods in an essential way. We give a new algebraic construction of the Gelfand-Graev action, as well as its quasi-classical counterpart. Our approach is based on Hami…
Given a nilpotent Lie group $N$, a compact subgroup $K$ of automorphisms of $N$ and an irreducible unitary representation $(τ,W_τ)$ of $K$, we study conditions on $τ$ for the commutativity of the algebra of $\mathrm{End}(W_τ)$-valued integrable functions on $N$, with an additional property that generalizes the notion of $K$-invariance. A necessary condition, proved by F. Ricci and A. Samanta, is that $(K\ltimes N,K)$ must be a Gelfand pair. In this article we determine all the commutative algebras from a particular class of Gelfand pairs constructed by J. Lauret.
In this article, using the notion of group contraction, we obtain the spherical functions of the strong Gelfand pair $(\mathrm{M}(n),\mathrm{SO}(n))$ as an appropriate limit of spherical functions of the strong Gelfand pair $(\mathrm{SO}(n+1),\mathrm{SO}(n))$ and also of the strong Gelfand pair $(\mathrm{SO}_0(n,1),\mathrm{SO}(n))$.
Let $F(n)$ be a connected and simply connected free 2-step nilpotent lie group and $K$ be a compact subgroup of Aut($F(n)$). We say that $(K,F(n))$ is a Gelfand pair when the set of integrable $K$-invariant functions on $F(n)$ forms an abelian algebra under convolution. In this paper, we consider the case when $K=O(n)$. In [1], we know the only possible Galfand pairs for $(K,F(n))$ is $(O(n),F(n))$, $(SO(n),F(n))$. So we just consider the case $(O(n),F(n))$, the other case can be obtained in the similar way.We study the natural topology on $Δ(O(n),F(n))$ given by uniform convergence on compact…
Let G be a locally compact group acting properly by type-preserving automorphisms on a locally finite thick Euclidean building $Δ$ and K be the stabilizer of a special vertex in $Δ$. It is known that (G, K) is a Gelfand pair as soon as G acts strongly transitively on $Δ$; this is in particular the case when G is a semi-simple algebraic group over a local field. We show a converse to this statement, namely: if (G, K) is a Gelfand pair and G acts cocompactly on $Δ$, then the action is strongly transitive. The proof uses the existence of strongly regular hyperbolic elements in G and their peculia…
In this paper we deal with Radon transforms for generalized flag manifolds in the framework of quasi-equivariant D-modules. We shall follow the method employed by Baston-Eastwood and analyze the Radon transform using the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand resolution and the Borel-Weil-Bott theorem. We shall determine the transform completely on the level of the Grothendieck groups. Moreover, we point out a vanishing criterion and give a sufficient condition in order that a D-module associated to an equivariant locally free O-module is transformed into an object of the same type. The case of maximal par…
(Abridged abstract) For a finite real reflection group W and a W-orbit O of flats in its reflection arrangement---or equivalently a conjugacy class of its parabolic subgroups---we introduce a statistic on elements of W. We then study the operator of right-multiplication within the group algebra of W by the element whose coefficients are given by this statistic. We reinterpret the operators geometrically in terms of the arrangement of reflecting hyperplanes for W. We show that they are self-adjoint and positive semidefinite. via two explicit factorizations into a symmetrized form A^t A. In one …
Let F be a non-Archimedean local field or a finite field. Let n be a natural number and k be 1 or 2. Consider G:=GL(n+k,F) and let M:=GL(n,F) x GL(k,F)<G be a maximal Levi subgroup. Let U< G be the corresponding unipotent subgroup and let P=MU be the corresponding parabolic subgroup. Let J denote the Jacquet functor from representations of G to representations of M (i.e. the functor of coinvariants w.r.t. U). In this paper we prove that J is a multiplicity free functor, i.e. dim Hom(J(π),ρ)<= 1, for any irreducible representations πof G and ρof M. To do that we adapt the classical method of Ge…

In this case, the Gelfand space $(O(n),F(n)$ is equipped with the Godement-Plancherel measure, and the spherical transform $\land:L_{O(n)}^{2}(F(n))\rightarrow L^{2}(Δ(O(n),F(n)))$ is an isometry. I will prove the Gelfand space $Δ(O(n),F(n))$ is equipped with the Godement-Planc…
Given a Lie group $G$, a compact subgroup $K$ and a representation $τ\in\hat K$, we assume that the algebra of $\text{End}(V_τ)$-valued, bi-$τ$-equivariant, integrable functions on $G$ is commutative. We present the basic facts of the related spherical analysis, putting particular emphasis on the rôle of the algebra of $G$-invariant differential operators on the homogeneous bundle $E_τ$ over $G/K$. In particular, we observe that, under the above assumptions, $(G,K)$ is a Gelfand pair and show that the Gelfand spectrum for the triple $(G,K,τ)$ admits homeomorphic embeddings in $\mathbb C^n$. In…
We obtain a complete classification of the continuous unitary representations of oligomorphic permutation groups (those include the infinite permutation group $S_\infty$, the automorphism group of the countable dense linear order, the homeomorphism group of the Cantor space, etc.). Our main result is that all irreducible representations of such groups are obtained by induction from representations of finite quotients of open subgroups and moreover, every representation is a sum of irreducibles. As an application, we prove that many oligomorphic groups have property (T). We also show that the G…
This is my PhD thesis submitted to the Weizmann Institute of Science. It is based on the papers [AG08c], [AG08d], [AGRS07], [AGS08], [AGS09], [Aiz08] and [SZ08]. This thesis includes an introduction to Gelfand pairs and invariant distributions, a list of tools to work with invariant distributions oriented towards proving Gelfand property and a proof that the pair (GL(n+1,F),GL(n,F)) is a strong Gelfand pair. Namely, we prove that if $π$ is an irreducible admissible smooth representation of GL(n+1,F) and $ρ$ is an irreducible admissible smooth representation of GL(n,F) then $$dim Hom_{GL(n,F)}(…
A subgroup H of an algebraic group G is said to be strongly solvable if H is contained in a Borel subgroup of G. This paper is devoted to establishing relationships between the following three combinatorial classifications of strongly solvable spherical subgroups in reductive complex algebraic groups: Luna's general classification of arbitrary spherical subgroups restricted to the strongly solvable case, Luna's 1993 classification of strongly solvable wonderful subgroups, and the author's 2011 classification of strongly solvable spherical subgroups. We give a detailed presentation of all the t…
Let $G$ be a simple connected complex Lie group. The additive eigencone of $G$ is a polyhedral cone containing the set of solutions to the additive eigenvalue problem, a generalization of the Hermitian eigenvalue problem. The additive eigencone is functorial, and for certain subgroups satisfies a stronger functoriality property: the eigencone of the subgroup is determined by the inequalities of the larger eigencone. Belkale and Kumar first studied this property for subgroups invariant under a diagram automorphism of $G$. We study a new class of subgroups arising from centralizers of torus elem…
Let $G_1,G_2$ be real reductive groups and $(π,V)$ a smooth, irreducible, admissible representation of $G_1 \times G_2$. We prove that $(π,V)$ is the completed tensor product of $(π_i,V_i)$, $i=1,2$, where $(π_i,V_i)$ is a smooth, irreducible, admissible representation of $G_i$, $i=1,2$. We deduce this from the analogous theorem for Harish-Chandra modules, for which one direction was proven in [AG] and the other direction we prove here. As a corollary, we deduce that strong Gelfand property for a pair $H \subset G$ of real reductive groups is equivalent to the usual Gelfand property of the pair …
Let $G=GL_{n}(\mathbb{C})$ and $1\neψ:\mathbb{C}\to\mathbb{C}^{\times}$ be an additive character. Let $U$ be the subgroup of upper triangular unipotent matrices in $G$. Denote by $θ$ the character $θ:U\to\mathbb{C}$ given by \[ θ(u):=ψ(u_{1,2}+u_{2,3}+...+u_{n-1,n}). \] Let $P$ be the mirabolic subgroup of $G$ consisting of all matrices in $G$ with the last row equal to $(0,0,...,0,1)$. We prove that if $π$ is an irreducible generic representation of $GL_{n}(\mathbb{C})$ and $\mathcal{W}(π,ψ)$ is its Whittaker model, then the space $\{f|_{P}:P\to \mathbb{C}:\, f\in \mathcal{W}(π,ψ)\}$ contains…
We prove the following result in relative representation theory of a reductive p-adic group $G$: Let $U$ be the unipotent radical of a minimal parabolic subgroup of $G$, and let $ψ$ be an arbitrary smooth character of $U$. Let $S \subset Irr(G)$ be a Zariski dense collection of irreducible representations of $G$. Then the span of the Bessel distributions $B_π$ attached to representations $π$ from $S$ is dense in the space $\mathcal S^*(G)^{U\times U,ψ\times ψ}$ of all $(U\times U,ψ\times ψ)$-equivariant distributions on $G.$ We base our proof on the following results: 1. The category of smooth…
Let G be a connected reductive complex algebraic group and B a Borel subgroup of G. We consider a subgroup H of B acting with finitely many orbits on the flag variety G/B, and we classify the H-orbits in G/B in terms of suitable combinatorial invariants. As well, we study the Weyl group action defined by Knop on the set of H-orbits in G/B, and we give a combinatorial model for this action in terms of weight polytopes.
