Let $G$ be a classical complex Lie group, $P$ any parabolic subgroup of $G$, and $G/P$ the corresponding partial flag variety. We prove an explicit combinatorial Giambelli formula which expresses an arbitrary Schubert class in the cohomology ring of $G/P$ as a polynomial in certain special Schubert class generators. Our formula extends to one that applies to the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of $G/P$ and to the setting of symplectic and orthogonal degeneracy loci.
We use Young's raising operators to introduce and study double eta polynomials, which are an even orthogonal analogue of Wilson's double theta polynomials. Our double eta polynomials give Giambelli formulas which represent the equivariant Schubert classes in the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of even orthogonal Grassmannians, and specialize to the single eta polynomials of Buch, Kresch, and the author.
We use Young's raising operators to introduce and study double theta polynomials, which specialize to both the theta polynomials of Buch, Kresch, and Tamvakis, and to double (or factorial) Schur S-polynomials and Q-polynomials. These double theta polynomials give Giambelli formulas which represent the equivariant Schubert classes in the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of symplectic Grassmannians, and we employ them to obtain a new presentation of this ring in terms of intrinsic generators and relations.
We give a direct proof of the equivalence between the Giambelli and Pieri type formulas for Hall-Littlewood functions using Young's raising operators, parallel to joint work with Buch and Kresch for the Schubert classes on isotropic Grassmannians. We prove several closely related mirror identities enjoyed by the Giambelli polynomials, which lead to new recursions for Schubert classes. The raising operator approach is applied to obtain tableau formulas for Hall-Littlewood functions, theta polynomials, and related Stanley symmetric functions. Finally, we introduce the notion of a skew element w …
The main result of this note is a Giambelli formula for the Peterson Schubert classes in the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology ring of a type $A$ Peterson variety. Our results depend on the Monk formula for the equivariant structure constants for the Peterson Schubert classes derived by Harada and Tymoczko. In addition, we give proofs of two facts observed by H. Naruse: firstly, that some constants which appear in the multiplicative structure of the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of Peterson varieties are Stirling numbers of the second kind, and secondly, that the Peterson Schubert classes satisfy a …
Let G be a classical complex Lie group, P any parabolic subgroup of G, and X = G/P the corresponding homogeneous space, which parametrizes (isotropic) partial flags of subspaces of a fixed vector space. In the mid 1990s, Fulton, Pragacz, and Ratajski asked for global formulas which express the cohomology classes of the universal Schubert varieties in flag bundles -- when the space X varies in an algebraic family -- in terms of the Chern classes of the vector bundles involved in their definition. This has applications to the theory of degeneracy loci of vector bundles and is closely related to …
Let X be an orthogonal Grassmannian parametrizing isotropic subspaces in an even dimensional vector space equipped with a nondegenerate symmetric form. We prove a Giambelli formula which expresses an arbitrary Schubert class in the singular and quantum cohomology ring of X as a polynomial in certain special Schubert classes. Our analysis reveals a surprising relation between the Schubert calculus on even and odd orthogonal Grassmannians. We also study eta polynomials, a family of polynomials defined using raising operators whose algebra agrees with the Schubert calculus on X.
Let X be a symplectic or odd orthogonal Grassmannian parametrizing isotropic subspaces in a vector space equipped with a nondegenerate (skew) symmetric form. We prove a Giambelli formula which expresses an arbitrary Schubert class in H^*(X,Z) as a polynomial in certain special Schubert classes. We study theta polynomials, a family of polynomials defined using raising operators whose algebra agrees with the Schubert calculus on X. Furthermore, we prove that theta polynomials are special cases of Billey-Haiman Schubert polynomials and use this connection to express the former as positive linear …
We establish a Gysin formula for Schubert bundles and a strong version of the duality theorem in Schubert calculus on Grassmann bundles. We then combine them to compute the fundamental classes of Schubert bundles in Grassmann bundles, which yields a new proof of the Giambelli formula for vector bundles.
We establish an equivariant quantum Giambelli formula for partial flag varieties. The answer is given in terms of a specialization of universal double Schubert polynomials. Along the way, we give new proofs of the presentation of the equivariant quantum cohomology ring, as well as Graham-positivity of the structure constants in equivariant quantum Schubert calculus.
We study the torus equivariant Schubert classes of the Grassmannian of non-maximal isotropic subspaces in a symplectic vector space. We prove a formula that expresses each of those classes as a sum of multi Schur-Pfaffians, whose entries are equivariantly modified special Schubert classes. Our result gives a proof to Wilson's conjectural formula, which generalizes the Giambelli formula for the ordinary cohomology proved by Buch-Kresch-Tamvakis, given in terms of Young's raising operators. Furthermore we show that the formula extends to a certain family of Schubert classes of the symplectic par…
Using raising operators and geometric arguments, we establish formulas for the K-theory classes of degeneracy loci in classical types. We also find new determinantal and Pfaffian expressions for classical cases considered by Giambelli: the loci where a generic matrix drops rank, and where a generic symmetric or skew-symmetric matrix drops rank. In an appendix, we construct a K-theoretic Euler class for even-rank vector bundles with quadratic form, refining the Chow-theoretic class introduced by Edidin and Graham. We also establish a relation between top Chern classes of maximal isotropic subbu…
We define degeneracy loci for vector bundles with structure group $G_2$, and give formulas for their cohomology (or Chow) classes in terms of the Chern classes of the bundles involved. When the base is a point, such formulas are part of the theory for rational homogeneous spaces developed by Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand and Demazure. This has been extended to the setting of general algebraic geometry by Giambelli-Thom-Porteous, Kempf-Laksov, and Fulton in classical types; the present work carries out the analogous program in type $G_2$. We include explicit descriptions of the $G_2$ flag variety a…
Let G be a complex semisimple linear algebraic group and let Pet be the associated Peterson variety in the flag variety G/B. The main theorem of this note gives an efficient presentation of the equivariant cohomology ring H^*_S(Pet) of the Peterson variety as a quotient of a polynomial ring by an ideal J generated by quadratic polynomials, in the spirit of the Borel presentation of the cohomology of the flag variety. Here the group S \cong \mathbb{C}^* is a certain subgroup of a maximal torus T of G. Our description of the ideal J uses the Cartan matrix and is uniform across Lie types. In our …
In previous work, we employed a geometric method of Kazarian to prove Pfaffian formulas for a certain class of degeneracy loci in types B, C, and D. Here we refine that approach to obtain formulas for more general loci, including those coming from all isotropic Grassmannians. In these cases, the formulas recover the remarkable theta- and eta-polynomials of Buch, Kresch, Tamvakis, and Wilson. The streamlined geometric approch yields simple and direct proofs, which proceed in parallel for all four classical types. In an appendix, we develop some foundational algebra and prove several Pfaffian id…
