We examine the influence of Ni impurity in cuprates on the distribution of hole carriers by performing numerically exact diagonalization calculations for a model consisting of Cu3d, Ni3d, and O2p orbitals. Using realistic parameters for the system, we find that a hole is predominantly bound to O2p orbitals around the Ni impurity forming the Zhang-Rice doublet. This imposes strong restrictions on modeling Ni-substituted cuprates. We propose a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiment for Ni K-edge to confirm hole binding around the Ni impurity.
Present-day angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has offered a tremendous advance in the understanding of electron energy spectra in cuprate superconductors and some related compounds. However, in high magnetic field, magnetic quantum oscillations at low temperatures indicate the existence of small electron (hole) Fermi pockets seemingly missing in ARPES of hole (electron) doped cuprates. Here ARPES and quantum oscillations are reconciled in the framework of an impurity band in the charge-transfer Mott-Hubbard insulator.
Local magnetic properties around a nonmagnetic impurity are investigated in high-Tc cuprate superconductors. We consider a model two-dimensional d-wave superconductor with strong antiferromagnetic (AF) spin fluctuations and calculate the spin susceptibility around the impurity. We show that the uniform susceptibility, which is usually suppressed in spin-singlet superconductivity, is enhanced at low temperatures around the impurity when the impurity scattering is in the unitarity limit. This anomalous behavior is more remarkable when the impurity potential is extended spatially and the AF spin …
We study the interplay of quantum impurity, and collective spinon and holon dynamics in Zn doped high-T$_c$ cuprates in the normal state. The two-dimensional t-t$^{\prime}$-J models with one and a small amount of Zn impurity are investigated within a numerical method based on the double-time Green function theory. We study the inhomogeneities of holon density and antiferromagnetic correlation background in cases with different Zn concentrations, and obtain that doped holes tend to assemble around the Zn impurity with their mobility being reduced. Therefore a bound state of holon is formed arou…
With the aim at understanding the non-monotonic $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave gap, we analyze the local electronic structure near impurities in the electron-doped cuprate superconductors. We find that the local density of states near a non-magnetic impurity in the scenario of $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave superconductivity with higher harmonics is qualitatively different from that obtained from the $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave superconductivity coexisting with antiferromagnetic spin density wave order. We propose that spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy measurements can distinguish the two scenarios and …
The effects of a non-magnetic Zn impurity substituting an in-plane Cu are studied by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation self-consistently which is derived from the \ttju Hamiltonian with all the allowed order parameters included. The Zn impurity, modeled in terms of a potential scatterer in unitary limit, induces local staggered magnetic moments around itself, and the calculated NMR shifts from the induced moments are in agreement with the experimental Cu NMR spectra. We also note that the experimentally observed negative slope of the tunneling conductance can result from the next-neare…
We study a model of a d-wave superconductor with strong potential scatterers in the presence of antiferromagnetic correlations and apply it to experimental nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) results on Zn impurities in the superconducting state of YBCO. We then focus on the contribution of impurity-induced paramagnetic moments, with Hubbard correlations in the host system accounted for in Hartree approximation. We show that local magnetism around individual impurities broadens the line, but quasiparticle interference between impurity states plays an important role in smearing out impurity satell…
The electronic ground state in high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates where the superconducting state is suppressed by Ni substitution has been investigated in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$Cu$_{1-y}$Ni$_y$O$_4$ from the specific heat and muon spin relaxation measurements. It has been found that the ground state changes from a magnetically ordered state with the strong hole-trapping by Ni to a metallic state with the Kondo effect of Ni with increasing hole-concentration. Moreover, the analysis of the results has revealed that a phase separation into the magnetically ordered phase and the metallic phase occurs around the…
Using a dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo approximation, we investigate the effect of local disorder on the stability of d-wave superconductivity including the effect of electronic correlations in both particle-particle and particle-hole channels. With increasing impurity potential, we find an initial rise of the critical temperature due to an enhancement of anti-ferromagnetic spin correlations, followed by a decrease of Tc due to scattering from impurity-induced moments and ordinary pairbreaking. We discuss the weak initial dependence of Tc on impurity concentration found in comparison to…
We analyze the density of state (DOS) and a non-magnetic impurity effect in electron-doped cuprates starting from two different scenarios: the $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave superconductivity coexisting with antiferromagnetic spin density wave (SDW) order versus $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave superconductivity with a higher harmonic. We find that in both cases the local density of state (LDOS) exhibits two impurity-induced resonance states at low energies. We also find that for the intermediate value of the SDW gap, the DOS looks similar to that obtained from the scenario of the $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave gap wit…
We consider the screening of an impurity moment in a d-wave superconductor under the influence of a Zeeman magnetic field. Using the Numerical Renormalization Group technique, we investigate the resulting pseudogap Kondo problem, in particular the field-induced crossover behavior in the vicinity of the zero-field boundary quantum phase transition. The impurity spectral function and the resulting changes in the local host density of states are calculated, giving specific predictions for high-field STM measurements on impurity-doped cuprates.
We apply a recently developed method combining first principles based Wannier functions with solutions to the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations to the problem of interpreting STM data in cuprate superconductors. We show that the observed images of Zn on the surface of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$ can only be understood by accounting for the tails of the Cu Wannier functions, which include significant weight on apical O sites in neighboring unit cells. This calculation thus puts earlier crude "filter" theories on a microscopic foundation and solves a long standing puzzle. We then study quasiparticle …
The physical properties of high-$T_c$ superconductors are affected by spatial inhomogeneities introduced by impurities. In addition, superconductivity and electronic nematicity seem intertwined in these materials. To address these questions, we apply inhomogeneous cluster dynamical mean field theory to the study of superconductivity in the Hubbard model, in the presence of a repeated impurity, at zero temperature. We find that the superconducting phase is shifted slightly away from half-filling due to the presence of the impurity. This can be explained by a competition with the Mott insulating…
We investigated Fe-substitution effects on ferromagnetic fluctuations in the superconducting overdoped and non-superconducting heavily overdoped regimes of the Bi-2201 cuprates by the magnetization and electrical-resistivity measurements. It was found that the spin-glass state was induced at low temperatures by the Fe substitution. The Curie constant and the effective Bohr magneton, estimated from the magnetic susceptibility, as well as the dimensionality of the ferromagnetic fluctuations from the resistivity, suggest the enhancement of the ferromagnetic fluctuations owing to the Fe substituti…
We perform the numerically exact diagonalization study of the t-J model with nonmagnetic impurities to clarify the relation between Zn impurities and the stripes. By examining the hole-hole correlation function for a two-hole \sqrt{18}x\sqrt{18} cluster with a single impurity, we find that the impurity has a tendency to stabilize vertical charge stripes. This tendency is caused by the gain of the kinetic energy of holes moving along the stripes that are formed avoiding the impurity.
Irrespective of the class they belong to, all the hole doped high-Tc cuprate superconductors show an anti-correlation between the superconducting transition temperature and the characteristic pseudogap energy in the underdoped region. The doping dependent pseudogap in the quasiparticle spectral density is believed to remove low-energy electronic states and thereby reduce the superconducting condensate. Impurities within the CuO2 plane, on the other hand, break Cooper pairs in the unitarity limit and diminish superfluid density. Both pseudogap in pure cuprates and impurity scattering in disorde…
We report a new multi-nuclei based NMR method which allows us to image the staggered polarization induced by nonmagnetic Li impurities in underdoped O6.6 and slightly overdoped O7 YBa2Cu3O6+y above T_C. The spatial extension of the polarization xi_imp approximately follows a Curie law, increasing up to six lattice constants at T=80K at O6.6 in the pseudogap regime. Near optimal doping, the staggered magnetization has the same shape, with xi_imp reduced by a factor 2. xi_imp is argued to reveal the intrinsic magnetic correlation length of the pure system. It is found to display a smooth evoluti…
We present a theory of magnetic (S=1) Ni and nonmagnetic Zn impurities in underdoped cuprates. Both types of impurities are shown to induce S=1/2 moments on Cu sites in the proximity of the impurity, a process which is intimately related to the spin gap phenomenon in cuprates. Below a characteristic Kondo temperature, the Ni spin is partially screened by the Cu moments, resulting in an effective impurity spin S=1/2. We further analyze the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasiya-Yosida-type response of planar Cu spins to a polarization of the effective impurity moments and derive expressions for the correspondi…
Ni-substitution effects on the superconductivity and Cu-spin correlation have been investigated in La2-xSrxCu1-yNiyO4 from the electrical resistivity and muon spin relaxation measurements, taking into account the hole trapping by Ni recently suggested. It has been found that the Ni-substitution suppresses the superconductivity, induces the localization of holes and develops the Cu-spin correlation to the same degree as the Zn substitution. These suggest that Ni with a trapped hole tends to give rise to potential scattering of holes in the CuO2 plane to the same degree as Zn, being discussed in…
Taking into account the first localization corrections in the electron-impurity self-energy we study the effect of non-magnetic impurities on unconventional superconductivity (SC) mediated by small-q electron-phonon scattering. We show that when van Hove singularities are close to the Fermi level making the electronic system anisotropic as in the high-$T_c$ oxides, both the d-wave and s-wave states are sensitive to non-magnetic impurities and beyond a critical impurity concentration SC disappears in {\it both gap symmetry channels}. Impurity doping may induce a first order transition from d-wa…
Zero-field muon-spin-relaxation measurements have been carried out in order to investigate the Zn- and Ni-substitution effects on the Cu-spin dynamics in the electron-doped Pr_0.86_LaCe_0.14_Cu_1-y_(Zn, Ni)_y_O_4+\alpa-δ_ with y = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.05 and different values of the reduced oxygen content δ(δ\le 0.09). For the samples with y = 0 and very small δvalues of δ< 0.01, a muon-spin precession due to the formation of a long-range antiferromagnetic order has been observed at low temperatures below \~ 5 K. For the moderately oxygen-reduced samples of 0.01 \le δ\le 0.09, on the contrary, no m…
Studying the disappearance of superconductivity at the end of the overdoped region of the cuprate phase diagram offers a different approach for investigating the interaction which is responsible for pairing in these materials. In the underdoped region this question is complicated by the presence of charge and stripe ordered phases as well as the pseudogap. In the overdoped region the situation appears simpler with only a normal phase, a superconducting phase and impurity scattering. Here, for the overdoped region, we report the results of a combined dynamic cluster approximation (DCA) and a we…
We consider a strongly correlated ladder with diagonal hopping and exchange interactions described by $t-J$ type hamiltonian. We study the dynamics of a single hole in this model in the presence of a static non-magnetic (or magnetic) impurity. In the case of a non-magnetic (NM) impurity we solve the problem analytically both in the triplet (S=1) and singlet (S=0) sectors. In the triplet sector the hole doesn't form any bound state with the impurity. However, in the singlet sector the hole forms bound states of different symmetries with increasing $J/t$ values. Binding energies of those impurit…
We consider a defect in a strongly correlated host metal and discuss, within a slave boson mean field formalism for the $t-t'-J$ model, the formation of an induced paramagnetic moment which is extended over nearby sites. We study in particular an impurity in a metallic band, suitable for modelling the optimally doped cuprates, in a regime where the impurity moment is paramagnetic. The form of the local susceptibility as a function of temperature and doping is found to agree well with recent NMR experiments, without including screening processes leading to the Kondo effect.
We examine the effect of a nonmagnetic impurity in a two-dimensional spin liquid in the spin-gap phase, employing a drone-fermion representation of spin-1/2 operators. The properties of the local moment induced in the vicinity of the impurity are investigated and an expression for the nuclear-magnetic- resonance Knight shift is derived, which we compare with experimental results. Introducing a second impurity into the spin liquid an antiferromagnetic interaction between the moments is found when the two impurities are located on different sublattices. The presence of many impurities leads to a…
The electronic structure of cuprate superconductors is studied within the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism in the presence of the out-of-plane impurities. With increasing the impurity concentration, although both superconducting coherence peaks around nodal and antinodal regions are suppressed, the position of the leading-edge mid-point of the electron spectrum around the nodal region remains at the same position, while it is shifted towards higher binding energies around the antinodal region, this leads to a strong deviation from the monotonic d-wave superconducting gap in the …
We suggest that when zinc is substituted for copper in the copper oxide planes of high $T_{c}$ superconductors, it does not necessarily have a valency of 2+. Rather, the valency of a zinc impurity should be determined by its surrounding medium. In order to study this hypothesis, we examine the effect of static impurities inducing diagonal disorder within a one band Hubbard model coupled to a localised state. We use this model to discuss the physics of zinc doping in the cuprates. Specifically, we discuss the formation of local moments near impurity sites and the modification of the transverse …
We study the properties of two electrons with Coulomb interactions in a tight-binding model of La-based cuprate superconductors. This tight-binding model is characterized by long-range hopping obtained previously by advanced quantum chemistry computations. We show analytically and numerically that the Coulomb repulsion leads to a formation of compact pairs propagating through the whole system. The mechanism of pair formation is related to the emergence of an effective narrow energy band for Coulomb electron pairs with conserved total pair energy and momentum. The dependence of the pair formati…
A theory of the local magnetic response of a nonmagnetic impurity in a doped antiferromagnet, as relevant to the normal state in cuprates, is presented. It is based on the assumption of the overdamped collective mode in the bulk system and on the evidence, that equal-time spin correlations are only weakly renormalized in the vicinity of the impurity. The theory relates the Kondo-like behavior of the local susceptibility to the anomalous temperature dependence of the bulk magnetic susceptibility, where the observed increase of the Kondo temperature with doping reflects the crossover to the Ferm…
We investigate magnetic properties of lightly doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulators in the presence of non-magnetic impurities. Within the framework of the t-J model we calculate the doping dependence of the antiferromagnetic order parameter using the self-consistent diagrammatic techniques. We show that in the presence of non-magnetic impurities the antiferromagnetic order is more robust against hole doping in comparison with the impurity-free host, implying that magnetic order can re-appear upon Zn doping into lightly hole-doped cuprates. We argue that this is primarily due to the loss of …
We discovered a first-order phase transition between dimerized-antiferromagnetic and uniform-antiferromagnetic phases in impurity-doped spin-Peierls (SP) cuprate Cu{1-x}MgxGeO3. As impurity concentration increases, linear reduction of SP transition temperature (T{SP}) and linear increase of Neel temperature (TN) are observed up to x = 0.023. At this critical concentration (xc) SP transition suddenly disappears and TN jumps discontinuously. The peak of the susceptibility at xc around TN is not so sharp as those at other concentrations, which indicates the phase separation of low and high concen…
In order to explain how impurities affect the unconventional superconductivity, we study non-magnetic impurity effect on the transition temperature using on-site U Hubbard model within a fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approximation. We find that in appearance, the reduction of Tc roughly coincides with the well-known Abrikosov-Gor'kov formula. This coincidence results from the cancellation between two effects; one is the reduction of attractive force due to randomness, and another is the reduction of the damping rate of quasi-particle arising from electron interaction. As another problem, we also…
We present a theory of magnetic (Ni) and nonmagnetic (Zn) impurities substituted into planar Cu sites in the normal state of underdoped cuprates exhibiting a spin gap. Both types of impurities induce magnetic moments on neighboring Cu sites. In the case of Ni these moments partially screen the inherent impurity spin, resulting in an effective S=1/2 moment. The characteristic Kondo scale is found to have a power-law dependence on the coupling constant. We investigate the spatial shape of the impurity-induced spin density, taking into account the presence of short-ranged AF correlations, and cal…
We have derived the effective low energy Hamiltonian for Zn or Ni substituted high-T_c cuprates from microscopic three-band models consisting of the most relevant Cu or impurity 3d and O 2p orbitals. We find that both scattering potential and hopping integral induced by impurities have a finite range but decay very fast with distance from the impurity. The Zn scattering potential is very strong and attractive for electrons. The Ni scattering potential is much weaker than the Zn case, resulting from the hybridization between Ni ions and O holes. This profound difference is due to neither the el…
We present a systematic study of the impurity effect on Tc in Fe-based superconductors, assuming that the sign-reversal s-wave state due to inter-pocket repulsion ($s_\pm$-wave state) is realized. For this purpose, we introduce several realistic impurity models with non-local modifications of potentials and hopping integrals around the impurity site. When we use the impurity model parameters for 3d- and 4d-impurity atoms derived from the recent first principle study by Nakamura et al., we find that the $s_\pm$-wave state is very fragile against impurities: The superconductivity with $T_{c0}=30…
We discuss the effects of interlayer hopping and the resulting $k_z$-dispersion in the cuprates within the framework of the one-band tight binding (TB) model Hamiltonian. Specific forms of the dispersion relations in terms of the in-plane hopping parameters $t$, $t'$, $t''$ and $t'''$ and the effective interlayer hopping $t_z$ in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) and Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ (NCCO) and the added intracell hopping $t_{bi}$ between the CuO$_2$ bilayers in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8}$ (Bi2212) are presented. The values of the `bare' parameters are obtained via fits with the first prin…
We present a study of the effect of an electric field on the binding energy of a shallow hydrogenic impurity in GaAs/Ga_{1-x}Al_{x}As quantum well wires. The wire is considered to be of length L and radius R and the electric field F is applied along the z-axis, the axis of the wire.
Recently, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has revealed a dispersion anomaly at high binding energy near 0.3-0.5eV in various families of the high-temperature superconductors. For further studies of this anomaly we present a new two-dimensional fitting-scheme and apply it to high-statistics ARPES data of the strongly-overdoped Bi2Sr2CuO6 cuprate superconductor. The procedure allows us to extract theself-energy in an extended energy and momentum range. It is found that the spectral function of Bi2Sr2CuO6 can be parameterized using a small set of tight-binding parameters and a w…
We revisit the problem of the spectra of two holes in a CuO$_{2}$ layer, modeled as a Cu-d$^{8}$ impurity with full multiplet structure coupled to a full O-2p band as an approximation to the local electronic structure of a hole doped cuprate. Unlike previous studies that treated the O band as a featureless bath, we describe it with a realistic tight binding model. While our results are in qualitative agreement with previous work, we find considerable quantitative changes when using the proper O-2p band structure. We also find (i) that only the ligand O-2p orbitals play an essential role, withi…
Motivated by the recent experimental determination of the three-dimensional Fermi surface of overdoped La-based cuprate superconductors [Horio et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 2018, 121, 077004], we revisit the tight-binding parameterization of their conduction band. We construct a minimal tight-binding model entailing eight orbitals, two of them involving apical oxygen ions. Parameter optimization allows to almost perfectly reproduce the three-dimensional conduction band as obtained from density functional theory (DFT). We discuss how each parameter entering this multiband model influences it, and sh…
We have measured the magnetic susceptibility of single-crystal Cu_{1-x}Ni_xGeO_3 to study doping effects of the magnetic impurity (Ni^{2+} has S=1 spin) on the inorganic spin-Peierls (SP) material CuGeO_3. We observed the disappearance of the SP transition and the abrupt increase of the Neel temperature from 2.5 to 3.4 K at x nearly equal to 0.020, which indicates the first-order phase transition between the dimerized-antiferromagnetic (D-AF) and the uniform-antiferromagnetic (U-AF) phases, as was discovered in Mg-doped (Mg^{2+} is nonmagnetic) system [T. Masuda et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 45…
This work studies the effect of temperature on the binding energy of a shallow hydrogenic impurity located on the axis of a cylindrical semiconductor GaAs Al_x Ga_{1-x} As quantum well wire. The results show that the binding energy at a low temperature of 100 K is increased by about 11% over that associated with nearly room temperature, $300 K$, and is also increased by about 23% over that associated with temperature of 500 K.
The magnetic polarization induced by nonmagnetic impurities such as Zn in high Tc cuprate compounds is studied by the variational Monte Carlo simulation. The variational wave function is constructed from the eigenstates obtained from Bogoliubov de Gennes mean field Hamiltonian for the two-dimensional t-J model. A Jastrow factor is introduced to account for the induced magnetic moment and the repulsion between holes and the impurity. A substantial energy gain is obtained by forming an antiferromagnetic polarization covering 4 or 5 lattice sites around the impurity. We also found the doping depe…
We calculate superfluid density for a dirty d-wave superconductor. The effects of impurity scattering are treated within the self-consistent t-matrix approximation, in weak-coupling BCS theory. Working from a realistic tight-binding parameterization of the Fermi surface, we find a superfluid density that is both correlated with T_c and linear in temperature, in good correspondence with recent experiments on overdoped La2-xSrxCuO4.
We revisit the problem of a single hole moving in the background of the two dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The hole is loosely bound by an impurity potential. We show that the bound state is generically a parity doublet: there are parametrically close bound states of opposite parity. Due to the degeneracy the bound state readily breaks local symmetries of the square lattice and this leads to formation of the long range spiral distortion of the antiferromagnetic background. A direct analogy with van der Waals forces in atomic physics is discussed.
Angle-resolved photoemission measurements on the electron-doped cuprate Sm(1.85)Ce(0.15)CuO(4) evidence anisotropic dressing of charge-carriers due to many-body interactions. Most significantly, the scattering rate along the zone boundary saturates for binding energies larger than ~200 meV, while along the diagonal direction it increases nearly linearly with the binding energy in the energy range ~150-500 meV. These results indicate that many-body interactions along the diagonal direction are strong down to the bottom of the band, while along the zone-bounday they become very weak at energies …
We study numerically, in the framework of the Cooper approach from 1956, mechanisms of pair formation in a model of La-based cuprate superconductors with longer-ranged hopping parameters reported in the literature at different values of center of mass momentum. An efficient numerical method allows to study lattices with more than a million sites. We consider the cases of attractive Hubbard and d-wave type interactions and a repulsive Coulomb interaction. The approach based on a frozen Fermi sea leads to a complex structure of accessible relative momentum states which is very sensitive to the t…
Local electronic effects in the vicinity of an impurity provide pivotal insight into the origin of unconventional superconductivity, especially when the materials are located on the edge of magnetic instability. In high-temperature cuprate superconductors, a strong suppression of superconductivity and appearance of low-energy bound states are clearly observed near nonmagnetic impurities. However, whether these features are common to other strongly correlated superconductors has not been established experimentally. Here, we report the {$in$} {$situ$} scanning tunneling microscopy observation of…
The recent angle-resolved photoemission measurements performed up to binding energies of the order of 1eV reveals a very robust feature: the nodal quasi-particle dispersion breaks up around 0.3-0.4eV and reappears around 0.6-0.8eV. The intensity map in the energy-momentum space shows a waterfall like feature between these two energy scales. We argue and numerically demonstrate that these experimental features follow naturally from the strong correlation effects built in the familiar t-J model, and reflect the connection between the fermi level and the lower Hubbard band. The results were obtai…
The superconducting phase of the $\mathrm{HgBa}_2\mathrm{CuO}_{4+δ}$ (Hg-1201) and $\mathrm{HgBa}_2\mathrm{Ca}_2\mathrm{Cu}_3\mathrm{O}_{8+δ}$ (Hg-1223) cuprates has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy under hydrostatic pressure. Our analysis reveals that the increase of $T_c$ with pressure is slower in Hg-1223 cuprate compared to the Hg-1201 due to a charge carrier concentration imbalance (accentuated by pressure) between the $\mathrm{CuO}_2$ layers of Hg-1223. We find that the energy variation under pressure of the apical oxygen mode from which the charge carriers are transferred to the …
Neutron scattering studies have provided important information about the momentum and energy dependence of magnetic excitations in cuprate superconductors. Of particular interest are the recent indications of a universal magnetic excitation spectrum in hole-doped cuprates. That starting point provides motivation for reviewing the antiferromagnetic state of the parent insulators, and the destruction of the ordered state by hole doping. The nature of spin correlations in stripe-ordered phases is discussed, followed by a description of the doping and temperature dependence of magnetic correlation…
The depairing (upper critical) field $H_{c2}$ in hole-doped cuprates has been inferred from magnetization curves $M$-$H$ measured by torque magnetometry in fields $H$ up to 45 T. We discuss the implications of the results for the pair binding energy, the Nernst onset temperature, fluctuations and the nature of the Meissner transition at $T_c$.
We study a magnetic impurity embedded in a correlated electron system using the density-matrix renormalization group method. The correlated electron system is described by the one-dimensional Hubbard model. At half filling, we confirm that the binding energy of the singlet bound state increases exponentially in the weak-coupling regime and decreases inversely proportional to the correlation in the strong-coupling regime. The spin-spin correlation shows an exponential decay with distance from the impurity site. The correlation length becomes smaller with increasing the correlation strength. We …
A hole in a two-dimensional Ising antiferromagnet was believed to be infinitely heavy due to the string of wrongly oriented spins it creates as it moves, which should trap it near its original location. Trugman showed that, in fact, the hole acquires a finite effective mass due to contributions from so-called {\it Trugman loop} processes, where the hole goes nearly twice around closed loops, first creating and then removing wrongly-oriented spins, and ending up at a different lattice site. This generates effective second- and third-nearest-neighbor hopping terms which keep the quasiparticle on…
Recent scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) experiments on underdoped cuprates have displayed modulations in the local electronic density of states which are centered on a Cu-O-Cu bond (Kohsaka et. al., cond-mat/0703309). As a paradigm of the pinning of such bond-centered ordering in strongly correlated systems, we present the theory of valence bond solid (VBS) correlations near a single impurity in a square lattice antiferromagnet. The antiferromagnet is assumed to be in the vicinity of a quantum transition from a magnetically ordered Neel state to a spin-gap state with long-range VBS order. …
Recently, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy has been used to highlight an anomalously large band renormalization at high binding energies in cuprate superconductors: the high energy "waterfall" or high energy anomaly (HEA). The anomaly is present for both hole- and electron-doped cuprates as well as the half-filled parent insulators with different energy scales arising on either side of the phase diagram. While photoemission matrix elements clearly play a role in changing the aesthetic appearance of the band dispersion, i.e. creating a "waterfall"-like appearance, they provide an inade…
We analyze the ground-state energy, local spin correlation, impurity spin polarization, impurity-induced magnetization, and corresponding zero-field susceptibilities of the symmetric single-impurity Kondo model on a tight-binding chain with bandwidth $W=2{\cal D}$ and coupling strength $J_{\rm K}$. We compare perturbative results and variational upper bounds from Yosida, Gutzwiller, and first-order Lanczos wave functions to the numerically exact data obtained from the Density-Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) and from the Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG) methods. The Gutzwiller variatio…
