Press-Schechter theory gives a simple, approximate functional form of the mass function of dark matter haloes. Sheth and Tormen (ST) refined this mass function to give an improved analytical fit to results of N-body simulations. These forms of the halo mass function are universal (independent of cosmology and power spectrum) when scaled in suitable variables. Using large suites of LCDM N-body simulations, studies in the last few years have shown that this universality is only approximate. We explore whether some of the deviations from universality can be attributed to the power spectrum by computing the mass function in N-body simulations of various scale-free models in an Einstein-de Sitter cosmology. This choice of cosmology does not introduce any scale into the problem. These models have the advantage of being self-similar, hence stringent checks can be imposed while running these simulations. This set of numerical experiments is designed to isolate any power spectrum dependent departures from universality of mass functions. We show explicitly that the best fit ST parameters have a clear dependence on power spectrum. Our results also indicate that an improved analytical theory with more parameters is required in order to provide better fits to the mass function.
We present a comprehensive study of the chemical properties of the stellar haloes of Milky-Way mass galaxies, analysing the transition between the inner to the outer haloes. We find the transition radius between the relative dominance of the inner-halo and outer-halo stellar populations to be ~15-20 kpc for most of our haloes, similar to that inferred for the Milky Way from recent observations. While the number density of stars in the simulated inner-halo populations decreases rapidly with distance, the outer-halo populations contribute about 20-40 per cent in the fiducial solar neighborhood, …
We study the amount and distribution of dark matter substructures within dark matter haloes, using a large set of high-resolution simulations ranging from group size to cluster size haloes, and carried our within a cosmological model consistent with WMAP 7-year data. In particular, we study how the measured properties of subhaloes vary as a function of the parent halo mass, the physical properties of the parent halo, and redshift. The fraction of halo mass in substructures increases with increasing mass. There is, however, a very large halo-to-halo scatter that can be explained only in part by…
We make use of two suits of ultra high resolution N-body simulations of individual dark matter haloes from the Phoenix and the Aquarius Projects to investigate systematics of assembly history of subhaloes in dark matter haloes differing by a factor of $1000$ in the halo mass. We have found that real progenitors which built up present day subhalo population are relatively more abundant for high mass haloes, in contrast to previous studies claiming a universal form independent of the host halo mass. That is mainly because of repeated counting of the 're-accreted' (progenitors passed through and …
We use the extensive catalog of dark matter haloes from the Millennium simulation to investigate the statistics of the mass accretion histories (MAHs) and accretion rates of ~500,000 haloes from redshift z=0 to 6. We find only about 25% of the haloes to have MAHs that are well described by a 1-parameter exponential form. For the rest of the haloes, between 20% (Milky-Way mass) to 50% (cluster mass) experience late-time growth that is steeper than an exponential, whereas the remaining haloes show plateau-ed late-time growth that is shallower than an exponential. The haloes with slower late-time…
We use N-body simulations to investigate the evolution of the orientation and magnitude of dark matter halo angular momentum within the large scale structure since z=3. We look at the evolution of the alignment of halo spins with filaments and with each other, as well as the spin parameter, which is a measure of the magnitude of angular momentum. It was found that the angular momentum vectors of dark matter haloes at high redshift have a weak tendency to be orthogonal to filaments and high mass haloes have a stronger orthogonal alignment than low mass haloes. Since z=1, the spins of low mass h…
The statistics of peaks of the initial, Gaussian density field can be used to interpret the abundance and clustering of massive dark matter haloes. I discuss some recent theoretical results related to their clustering and its redshift evolution. Predictions from the peak model are qualitatively consistent with measurements of the linear bias of high mass haloes, which also show some evidence for a dependence on the halo mass M at fixed peak height. The peak approach also predicts a distinctive scale-dependence in the bias of haloes across the baryon acoustic feature, a measurement of which wou…
We study the population statistics of the surviving subhaloes of LCDM dark matter haloes using a set of very high resolution N-body simulations. These include both simulations of representative regions of the Universe and ultra-high resolution resimulations of individual dark matter haloes. We find that more massive haloes tend to have a larger mass fraction in subhaloes. For example, cluster size haloes typically have 7.5 percent of their mass within R200 in substructures of fractional mass larger than 1e-5, which is 25 percent higher than galactic haloes. There is, however, a large variance …
We present a new algorithm which groups the subhaloes found in cosmological N- body simulations by structure finders such as SUBFIND into dark matter haloes whose formation histories are strictly hierarchical. One advantage of these `Dhaloes' over the commonly used friends-of-friends (FoF) haloes is that they retain their individual identity in cases when FoF haloes are artificially merged by tenuous bridges of particles or by an overlap of their outer diffuse haloes. Dhaloes are thus well-suited for modelling galaxy formation and their merger trees form the basis of the Durham semi-analytic g…
The characteristic prediction of the Cold Dark Matter (CDM) model of cosmological structure formation is that the Universe should contain a wealth of small-scale structure -- low-mass dark matter haloes and subhaloes. However, galaxy formation is inefficient in their shallow potential wells and so we expect these low-mass haloes and subhaloes to be dark. Can we tell the difference between a Universe in which low-mass haloes are present but dark and one in which they never formed, thereby providing a robust test of the CDM model? We address this question using cosmological simulations to examin…
We investigate the properties of dark matter haloes and subhaloes in an $f(R)$ gravity model with $|f_{R0}|=10^{-6}$, using a very high-resolution N-body simulation. The model is a borderline between being cosmologically interesting and yet still consistent with current data. We find that the halo mass function in this model has a maximum 20% enhancement compared with the $Λ$CDM predictions between $z=1$ and $z=0$. Because of the chameleon mechanism which screens the deviation from standard gravity in dense environments, haloes more massive than $10^{13}h^{-1}M_\odot$ in this $f(R)$ model have…
Galaxy clusters are luminous tracers of the most massive dark matter haloes in the Universe. To use them as a cosmological probe, a detailed description of the properties of dark matter haloes is required. We characterize how the dynamical state of haloes impacts the halo mass function at the high-mass end. We used the dark matter-only MultiDark suite of simulations and the high-mass objects M > 2.7e13 M/h therein. We measured mean relations of concentration, offset, and spin as a function of halo mass and redshift. We investigated the distributions around the mean relations. We measured the h…
We investigate the role of angular momentum in the clustering of dark matter haloes. We make use of data from two high-resolution N-body simulations spanning over four orders of magnitude in halo mass, from $10^{9.8}$ to $10^{14}\ h^{-1}\ \text{M}_\odot$. We explore the hypothesis that mass accretion in filamentary environments alters the angular momentum of a halo, thereby driving a correlation between the spin parameter $λ$ and the strength of clustering. However, we do not find evidence that the distribution of matter on large scales is related to the spin of haloes. We find that a halo's s…
We present a new algorithm for identifying the substructure within simulated dark matter haloes. The method is an extension of that proposed by Tormen et al. (2004) and Giocoli et al. (2008a), which identifies a subhalo as a group of self-bound particles that prior to being accreted by the main progenitor of the host halo belonged to one and the same progenitor halo (hereafter satellite). However, this definition does not account for the fact that these satellite haloes themselves may also have substructure, which thus gives rise to sub-subhaloes, etc. Our new algorithm identifies substructure…
We present a new statistical method to determine the relationship between the stellar masses of galaxies and the masses of their host dark matter haloes over the entire cosmic history from z~4 to the present. This multi-epoch abundance matching (MEAM) model self-consistently takes into account that satellite galaxies first become satellites at times earlier than they are observed. We employ a redshift-dependent parameterization of the stellar-to-halo mass relation to populate haloes and subhaloes in the Millennium simulations with galaxies, requiring that the observed stellar mass functions at…
Previous studies indicate that assembly bias effects are stronger for lower mass dark matter haloes. Here we make use of high resolution re-simulations of rich clusters and their surroundings from the Phoenix Project and a large volume cosmological simulation, the Millennium-II run, to quantify assembly bias effects on dwarf-sized dark matter haloes. We find that, in the regions around massive clusters, dwarf-sized haloes ($[10^9,10^{11}]\ms$) form earlier ($Δz \sim 2$ in redshift) and possess larger $V_{\rm max}$ ($\sim20%$) than the field galaxies. We find that this environmental dependence …
We present distributions of orbital parameters of infalling satellites of $Λ$CDM haloes in the mass range $10^{12}-10^{14}$M$_\odot$, which represent the initial conditions for the subsequent evolution of substructures within the host halo. We use merger trees constructed in a high resolution cosmological N-body simulation to trace satellite haloes, and identify the time of infall. We find signficant trends in the distribution of orbital parameters with both the host halo mass and the ratio of satellite-to-host halo masses. For all host halo masses, satellites whose infall mass is a larger fra…
With this Paper we complete a comprehensive study of substructure in dark matter haloes. In Paper I we derived the radial distribution and mass function (MF) of accreted subhaloes (scaled to the radius and mass of the host halo) and showed they are essentially universal. This is not the case, however, for those of stripped subhaloes, which depend on halo mass and assembly history. In Paper II we derived these latter properties in the simplest case of purely accreting haloes. Here we extend the study to ordinary haloes having suffered major mergers. After showing that all the properties of subs…
The tidal torque theory (TTT) relates the origin and evolution of angular momentum with the environment in which dark matter (DM) haloes form. The deviations introduced by late non-linearities are commonly thought as noise in the model. In this work, we analyze a cosmological simulation looking for systematics on these deviations, finding that the classification of DM haloes according to their angular momentum growth results in samples with different internal alignment, spin parameter distribution and assembly history. Based on this classification, we obtain that low mass haloes are embedded i…
We construct merger trees of dark matter haloes and quantify their merger rates and mass growth rates using the joint dataset from the Millennium and Millennium-II simulations. The finer resolution of the Millennium-II Simulation has allowed us to extend our earlier analysis of halo merger statistics to an unprecedentedly wide range of descendant halo mass (10^10 < M0 < 10^15 Msun), progenitor mass ratio (10^-5 < xi < 1), and redshift (0 < z < 15). We update our earlier fitting form for the mean merger rate per halo as a function of M_0, xi, and z. The overall behavior of this quantity is unch…
CUSP is a powerful formalism that recovers, from first principles and with no free parameter, all the macroscopic properties of dark matter haloes found in cosmological N-body simulations and unveils the origin of their characteristic features. Since it is not restricted by the limitations of simulations, it covers the whole mass and redshift ranges. In the present Paper we use CUSP to calculate the mass-scale relations holding for halo density profiles fitted to the usual NFW and Einasto functions in the most relevant cosmologies and for the most usual mass definitions. We clarify the origin …
It has been shown by Shchekinov & Vasiliev2006 (SV06) that HD molecules can be an important cooling agent in high redshift z >10 haloes if they undergo mergers under specific conditions so suitable shocks are created. Here we build upon Prieto et al. (2012) who studied in detail the merger-generated shocks, and show that the conditions for HD cooling can be studied by combining these results with a suite of dark-matter only simulations. We have performed a number of dark matter only simulations from cosmological initial conditions inside boxes with sizes from 1 to 4 Mpc. We look for haloes wit…
We present a method for populating dark matter simulations with haloes of mass below the resolution limit. It is based on stochastically sampling a field derived from the density field of the halo catalogue, using constraints from the conditional halo mass function n(m|δ). We test the accuracy of the method and show its application in the context of building mock galaxy samples. We find that this technique allows precise reproduction of the two-point statistics of galaxies in mock samples constructed with this method. Our results demonstrate that the full information content of a simulation ca…
The simple, conventional dark matter halo mass definitions commonly used in cosmological simulations ("virial" mass, FoF mass, $M_{50,100,200,...}$) only capture part of the collapsed material and are therefore inconsistent with the halo mass concept used in analytical treatments of structure formation. Simulations have demonstrated that typical dark matter particle orbits extend out to about 90 per cent of their turnaround radius, which results in apocenter passages outside of the current "virial" radius on the first and also on the second orbit. Here we describe how the formation history of …
Using a statistical sample of dark matter haloes drawn from a suite of cosmological N-body simulations of the Cold Dark Matter (CDM) model, we quantify the impact of a simulated halo's mass accretion and merging history on two commonly used measures of its dynamical state, the virial ratio eta and the centre of mass offset Delta r. Quantifying this relationship is important because the degree to which a halo is dynamically equilibrated will influence the reliability with which we can measure characteristic equilibrium properties of the structure and kinematics of a population of haloes. We beg…
We consider the problem of estimating the virial mass of a dark halo from the positions and velocities of a tracer population. Although a number of general tools are available, more progress can be made if we are able to specify the functional form of the halo potential (although not its normalization). Here, we consider the particular case of the cosmologically motivated Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) halo and develop two simple estimators. We demonstrate their effectiveness against numerical simulations and use them to provide new mass estimates of Carina, Fornax, Sculptor, and Sextans dSphs.
Dark matter haloes in cosmological filaments and walls have their spin vector aligned (in average) with their host structure. While haloes in walls are aligned with the plane of the wall independently of their mass, haloes in filaments present a mass dependent two-regime orientation. Here we show that the transition mass determining the change in the alignment regime (from parallel to perpendicular) depends on the hierarchical level in which the halo is located, reflecting the hierarchical nature of the Cosmic Web. By explicitly exposing this hierarchy we are able to identify the contributions…
The velocity anisotropy of particles inside dark matter (DM) haloes is an important physical quantity, which is required for the accurate modelling of mass profiles of galaxies and clusters of galaxies. It is typically measured using the ratio of the radial-to-tangential velocity dispersions at a given distance from the halo centre. However, this measure is insufficient to describe the dynamics of realistic haloes, which are typically quite elongated. Studying the velocity distribution in massive DM haloes in cosmological simulations, we find that in the inner parts of the haloes the local vel…
The smallest dark matter haloes are the first objects to form in the hierarchical structure formation of cold dark matter (CDM) cosmology and are expected to be the densest and most fundamental building blocks of CDM structures in our universe. Nevertheless, the physical characteristics of these haloes have stayed illusive, as they remain well beyond the current resolution of N-body simulations (at redshift zero). However, they dominate the predictions (and uncertainty) in expected dark matter annihilation signal, amongst other astrophysical observables. Using the conservation of total energy …
Dark matter haloes in Lambda CDM simulations grow by mergers with other haloes as well as accretion of "diffuse" non-halo material. We quantify the mass growth rates via these two processes, dM_mer/dt and dM_dif/dt, and their dependence on halo environment using the ~500,000 haloes in the Millennium simulation. Adopting a local mass density parameter as a measure of halo environment, we find the two rates show strong but opposite environmental dependence, with mergers playing an increasingly important role for halo growths in overdense regions and diffuse accretion dominating growth in voids. …
We use the large catalogues of haloes available for the Millennium Simulation to test whether recently merged haloes exhibit stronger large-scale clustering than other haloes of the same mass. This effect could help to understand the very strong clustering of quasars at high redshift. However, we find no statistically significant excess bias for recently merged haloes over the redshift range 2 < z < 5, with the most massive haloes showing an excess of at most ~5%. We also consider galaxies extracted from a semianalytic model built on the Millennium Simulation. At fixed stellar mass, we find an…
In this paper, we examine in detail the key structural properties of high redshift dark matter haloes as a function of their spin parameter. We perform and analyze high resolution cosmological simulations of the formation of structure in a LCDM Universe. We study the mass function, ellipticities, shapes, density profiles, rotation curves and virialization for a large sample of dark matter haloes from z = 15 - 6. We also present detailed convergence tests for individual haloes. We find that high spin haloes have stronger clustering strengths (up to 25%) at all mass and redshift ranges at these …
We use three different cosmological dark matter simulations to study how the orientation of the angular momentum vector (AM) in dark matter haloes evolve with time. We find that haloes in this kind of simulations are constantly affected by a spurious change of mass, which translates into an artificial change in the orientation of the AM. After removing the haloes affected by artificial mass change, we found that the change in the orientation of the AM vector is correlated with time. The change in its angle and direction (i.e. the angle subtended by the AM vector in two consecutive timesteps) t…
We used high resolution dark matter only cosmological simulations to investigate the structural properties of Lambda Cold Dark Matter ($Λ$CDM) haloes over cosmic time. The haloes in our study range in mass from $\sim 10^{10}$ to $\sim 10^{12} \mathrm{M}_\odot$, and are resolved with $10^5$ to $10^7$ particles. We fit the spherically averaged density profiles of DM haloes with the three parameter Einasto function. For our sample of haloes, the Einasto shape parameter, $α$, is uncorrelated with the concentration, $c$, at fixed halo mass, and at all redshifts. Previous reports of an anti-correlat…
Halo-based models have been successful in predicting the clustering of matter. However, the validity of the postulate that the clustering is fully determined by matter inside haloes remains largely untested, and it is not clear a priori whether non-virialised matter might contribute significantly to the non-linear clustering signal. Here, we investigate the contribution of haloes to the matter power spectrum as a function of both scale and halo mass by combining a set of cosmological N-body simulations to calculate the contributions of different spherical overdensity regions, Friends-of-Friend…
We have performed cosmo-hydro simulations using the RAMSES code to study atomic cooling (ACHs) haloes at z=10 with masses 5E7Msun<~M<~2E9Msun. We assume primordial gas and H2-cooling and prior star-formation have been suppressed. We analysed 19 haloes (gas and DM) at a resolution of ~10 (proper) pc, selected from a total volume of ~2E3 (comoving) Mpc3. This is the largest statistical hydro-sim. study of ACHs at z>10 to date. We examine the morphology, angular momentum (AM), thermodynamic, and turbulence of these haloes, in order to assess the prevalence of disks and supermassive black holes (S…
In this paper we study the triaxial properties of dark matter haloes of a wide range of masses extracted from a set of cosmological N-body simulations. We measure the shape at different distances from the halo centre (characterised by different overdensity thresholds), both in three and in two dimensions. We discuss how halo triaxiality increases with mass, redshift and distance from the halo centre. We also examine how the orientation of the different ellipsoids are aligned with each other and what is the gradient in internal shapes for halos with different virial configurations. Our findings…
We present the evolution of the structure of relaxed cold dark matter haloes in the cosmology from the Planck satellite. Our simulations cover 5 decades in halo mass, from dwarf galaxies to galaxy clusters. Due to the increased matter density and power spectrum normalization the concentration mass relation in the Planck cosmology has a 20 percent higher normalization at redshift z=0 compared to WMAP cosmology. We confirm that CDM haloes are better described by the Einasto profile; for example, at scales near galaxy half-light radii CDM haloes have significantly steeper density profiles than im…
With galaxy groups constructed from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we analyze the expected galaxy-galaxy lensing signals around satellite galaxies residing in different host haloes and located at different halo-centric distances. We use Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method to explore the potential constraints on the mass and density profile of subhaloes associated with satellite galaxies from SDSS-like surveys and surveys similar to the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). Our results show that for SDSS-like surveys, we can only set a loose constraint on the mean mass of subhaloes. …
For the last 30 years many observational and theoretical evidences have shown that galaxy clusters are not spherical objects, and that their shape is much better described by a triaxial geometry. With the advent of multi-wavelength data of increasing quality, triaxial investigations of galaxy clusters is gathering a growing interest from the community, especially in the time of "precision cosmology". In this work, we aim to provide the first statistically significant predictions in the unexplored mass range above 3x10^14 Mo/h, using haloes from two redshifts (z=0 and z=1) of the Millennium XXL…
Understanding the formation of the first objects in the universe critically depends on knowing whether the properties of small dark matter structures at high-redshift (z > 15) are different from their more massive lower-redshift counterparts. To clarify this point, we performed a high-resolution N-body simulation of a cosmological volume 1 Mpc/h comoving on a side, reaching the highest mass resolution to date in this regime. We make precision measurements of various physical properties that characterize dark matter haloes (such as the virial ratio, spin parameter, shape, and formation times, e…
We present a detailed investigation of the changing relationship between galaxies and the dark matter haloes they inhabit from z~1.2 to the present day. We do this by comparing precise galaxy clustering measurements over 133 deg2 of the "Wide" component of the CFHT Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) with predictions of an analytic HOD model where the number of galaxies in each halo depends only on the halo mass. Starting from a parent catalogue of ~ 3x10^6 galaxies at i'_AB < 22.5 we use accurate photometric redshifts calibrated using ~ 10^4 spectroscopic redshifts to create a series of type-selected volu…
In this second part, we generalize the results of the previous paper. We present an analytic superwind solution considering extended gravitationally-interacting dark-matter and baryonic haloes. The incorporation of the latter is critical, since they can have a substantial effect on the hydrodynamics of superwinds generated by massive galaxies. Although the presence of extended and massive haloes does not change the limit for the closed-box enrichment of galaxies established in the first paper, they can trigger an earlier activation of the open-box enrichment scenario, since their gravitational…
The anisotropy or triaxiality of massive dark matter haloes largely defines the structure of the cosmic web, in particular the filaments that join the haloes together. Here we investigate such oriented correlations in mass-Peak Patch halo catalogues by using the initial strain tensor of spherical proto-halo regions to orient the haloes. To go beyond the spherically averaged two-point correlation function of haloes we use oriented stacks to compute oriented two-point correlations: we explicitly break isotropy by imposing a local frame set by the strain tensor of the reference halo before stacki…
The recent detection of a 3.5 keV X-ray line from the centres of galaxies and clusters by Bulbul et al. (2014a) and Boyarsky et al. (2014a) has been interpreted as emission from the decay of 7 keV sterile neutrinos which could make up the (warm) dark matter (WDM). As part of the COpernicus COmplexio (COCO) programme, we investigate the properties of dark matter haloes formed in a high-resolution cosmological $N$-body simulation from initial conditions similar to those expected in a universe in which the dark matter consists of 7 keV sterile neutrinos. This simulation and its cold dark matter (…
We analyse the coarse-grained phase-space structure of the six Galaxy-scale dark matter haloes of the Aquarius Project using a state-of-the-art 6D substructure finder. Within r_50, we find that about 35% of the mass is in identifiable substructures, predominantly tidal streams, but including about 14% in self-bound subhaloes. The slope of the differential substructure mass function is close to -2, which should be compared to around -1.9 for the population of self-bound subhaloes. Near r_50 about 60% of the mass is in substructures, with about 30% in self-bound subhaloes. The inner 35 kpc of th…
Atomic cooling haloes with virial temperatures $\rm T_{vir} \geq 10^{4}$ K are the most plausible sites for the formation of the first galaxies and the first intermediate mass black holes. It is therefore important to assess whether one can obtain robust results concerning their main properties from numerical simulations. A major uncertainty is the presence of turbulence, which is barely resolved in cosmological simulations. We explore the latter both by pursuing high-resolution simulations with up to 64 cells per Jeans length and by incorporating a subgrid-scale turbulence model to account fo…
We study the correlations between the structural parameters of dark matter haloes using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). We consider a set of eight parameters, six of which are commonly used to characterize dark matter halo properties: mass, concentration, spin, shape, overdensity, and the angle ($Φ_L$) between the major axis and the angular momentum vector. Two additional parameters ($\x_{off}$ and $ρ_{rms}$) are used to describe the degree of `relaxedness' of the halo. We find that we can account for much of the variance of these properties with halo mass and concentration, on the one han…
We investigate the alignment of haloes with the filaments of the cosmic web using an unprecedently large sample of dark matter haloes taken from the P-Millennium $Λ$CDM cosmological N-body simulation. We use the state-of-the-art NEXUS morphological formalism which, due to its multiscale nature, simultaneously identifies structures at all scales. We find strong and highly significant alignments, with both the major axis of haloes and their peculiar velocity tending to orient along the filament. However, the spin - filament alignment displays a more complex trend changing from preferentially par…
We investigate the alignment of galaxies and haloes relative to cosmic web filaments using the EAGLE hydrodynamical simulation. We identify filaments by applying the NEXUS+ method to the mass distribution and the Bisous formalism to the galaxy distribution. Both web finders return similar filamentary structures that are well aligned and that contain comparable galaxy populations. EAGLE haloes have an identical spin alignment with filaments as their counterparts in dark matter only simulations: a complex mass dependent trend with low mass haloes spinning preferentially parallel to and high mass…
We use the Illustris Simulations to gain insight into the build-up of the outer, low-surface brightness regions which surround galaxies. We characterize the stellar haloes by means of the logarithmic slope of the spherically-averaged stellar density profiles, alphaSTARS at z=0, and we relate these slopes to the properties of the underlying Dark-Matter (DM) haloes, their central galaxies, and their assembly histories. We analyze a sample of ~5,000 galaxies resolved with more than 5x10^4 particles each, and spanning a variety of morphologies and halo masses (3x10^11 < Mvir < 10^14 Msun). We find…
Photoheating of the gas in low-mass dark matter (DM) haloes prevents baryons from cooling, leaving the haloes free of stars. Gas in these 'dark' haloes remains exposed to the ultraviolet background (UVB), and so is expected to emit via fluorescent recombination lines. We present a set of radiative transfer simulations, which model dark haloes as spherical gas clouds in hydrostatic equilibrium with a DM halo potential, and in thermal equilibrium with the UVB at redshift z = 0. We use these simulations to predict surface brightnesses in H-alpha, which we show to have a characteristic ring-shaped…
Observed kinematical data of 40 Local Group (LG) members are used to derive the dark matter halo mass of such galaxies. Haloes are selected from the theoretically expected LG mass function and two different density profiles are assumed, a standard universal cuspy model and a mass dependent profile which accounts for the effects of baryons in modifying the dark matter distribution within galaxies. The resulting relations between stellar and halo mass are compared with expectations from abundance matching. Using a universal cuspy profile, the ensemble of LG galaxies is fit in relatively low mass…
At $z=0$, higher-spin haloes with masses above $\log(\text{M}_{\text{c}}/h^{-1}\text{M}_\odot)\simeq 11.5$ have a higher bias than lower-spin haloes of the same mass. However, this trend is known to invert below this characteristic crossover mass, $\text{M}_{\text{c}}$. In this paper, we measure the redshift evolution and scale dependence of halo spin bias at the low-mass end and demonstrate that the inversion of the signal is entirely produced by the effect of splashback haloes. These low-mass haloes tend to live in the vicinity of significantly more massive haloes, thus sharing their large-s…
We examine the stellar haloes of the Auriga simulations, a suite of thirty cosmological magneto-hydrodynamical high-resolution simulations of Milky Way-mass galaxies performed with the moving-mesh code AREPO. We study halo global properties and radial profiles out to $\sim 150$ kpc for each individual galaxy. The Auriga haloes are diverse in their masses and density profiles; mean metallicity and metallicity gradients; ages; and shapes, reflecting the stochasticity inherent in their accretion and merger histories. A comparison with observations of nearby late-type galaxies shows very good agre…
Halo Abundance Matching has been used to construct a one-parameter mapping between galaxies and dark matter haloes by assuming that halo mass and galaxy luminosity (or stellar mass) are monotonically related. While this approach has been reasonably successful, it is known that galaxies must be described by at least two parameters, as can be seen from the two-parameter Fundamental Plane on which massive early-type galaxies lie. In this paper, we derive a connection between initial dark matter density perturbations in the early universe and present-day virialized dark matter haloes by assuming s…
Well-motivated elementary particle candidates for the dark matter, such as the sterile neutrino, behave as warm dark matter (WDM).For particle masses of order a keV, free streaming produces a cutoff in the linear fluctuation power spectrum at a scale corresponding to dwarf galaxies. We investigate the abundance and structure of WDM haloes and subhaloes on these scales using high resolution cosmological N-body simulations of galactic haloes of mass similar to the Milky Way's. On scales larger than the free-streaming cutoff, the initial conditions have the same power spectrum and phases as one o…
Cosmological models in which dark matter consists of cold elementary particles predict that the dark halo population should extend to masses many orders of magnitude below those at which galaxies can form. Here we report a cosmological simulation of the formation of present-day haloes over the full range of observed halo masses (20 orders of magnitude) when dark matter is assumed to be in the form of weakly interacting massive particles of mass approximately 100 gigaelectronvolts. The simulation has a full dynamic range of 30 orders of magnitude in mass and resolves the internal structure of h…
