Penrose described a process that, in principle, could extract energy and angular momentum from a rotating black hole. Here we examine two procedures that were claimed to be capable of implementing the Penrose idea; both make use of a particle moving at the horizon. In one, the particle is swallowed, and in the other the particle and black hole gradually exchange energy and angular momentum. We show that if the particle has negative energy and negative angular momentum but no radial momentum both procedures violate the requirement that the area of a black hole not decrease. For the gradual exchange method, however, it appears that the Penrose process could proceed if the particle has positive energy and angular momentum, but nevertheless removes energy from the black hole. It does not, however, lead to a Schwarzschild black hole. For an extreme Kerr black hole it's mass decreases by at most 9.7%, well short of the theoretical limit for a reversible process of 1-1/sqrt{2} =29%.
In a collisional Penrose process, two particles coming from the asymptotically flat region collide in the ergosphere of a compact object. The collision produces two new particles, one with positive energy and one with negative energy. When the particle with positive energy escapes to infinity, the process extracts energy from the compact object. In this paper, we study the collisional Penrose process in a rotating wormhole spacetime. We consider the simple case of a head-on collision at the throat of a Teo wormhole. We find that the process of energy extraction from a Teo wormhole can be subst…
We show that effects similar to those for a rotating black hole arise for an observer using a uniformly rotating reference frame in a flat space-time: a surface appears such that no body can be stationary beyond this surface, while the particle energy can be either zero or negative. Beyond this surface, which is similar to the static limit for a rotating black hole, an effect similar to the Penrose effect is possible. We consider the example where one of the fragments of a particle that has decayed into two particles beyond the static limit flies into the rotating reference frame inside the st…

We demonstrate an extraordinary effect of energy gain by a single radiating charged particle inside the ergosphere of a Kerr black hole in presence of magnetic field. We solve numerically the covariant form of the Lorentz-Dirac equation reduced from the DeWitt-Brehme equation and analyze energy evolution of the radiating charged particle inside the ergosphere, where the energy of emitted radiation can be negative with respect to a distant observer in dependence on the relative orientation of the magnetic field, black hole spin and the direction of the charged particle motion. Consequently, the…
Analogue gravity stands today as an important tool for the investigation of gravitational phenomena that would be otherwise out of reach considering our technology. We consider here the analogue Penrose process in a rotating acoustic black hole based on a quantum fluid described by the draining bathtub model. Because of the rotating nature of this acoustic spacetime, a particle, that is a phonon travelling on the quantum fluid, will experience the well known frame dragging effect. By defining the effective Komar mass and angular momentum of this acoustic black hole, we found that energy can be…
We consider collision of particles in a wormhole near its throat. Particles come from the opposite mouths. If the lapse function is small enough there, the energy $E$ of debris at infinity grows unbounded, so we are faced with the so-called super-Penrose process. This requires the existence of the ergoregion, so a wormhole should be rotating.
The Penrose process of an extremal braneworld black hole is studied. We analyze the Penrose process by two massive spinning particles collide near the horizon. By calculating the maximum energy extraction efficiency of this process, it turns out that the maximal efficiency increases as the tilde charge parameter $d$ of the braneworld blackhole decreases. Interestingly, for the negative value of $d$, the efficiency can be even larger than the Kerr case.
A Penrose diagram is constructed for a spatially coherent black hole that smoothly begins an accretion, then excretes symmetrically as measured by a distant observer, with the initial and final states described by a metric of Minkowski form. Coordinate curves on the diagram are computationally derived. Causal relationships between space-time regions are briefly discussed. The life cycle of the black hole demonstrably leaves asymptotic observers in an unaltered Minkowski space-time of uniform conformal scale.
A Penrose diagram is constructed for an example black hole that evaporates at a steady rate as measured by a distant observer, until the mass vanishes, yielding a final state Minkowski space-time. Coordinate dependencies of significant features, such as the horizon and coordinate anomalies, are clearly demonstrated on the diagram. The large-scale causal structure of the space-time is briefly discussed.
We study the collision of two uncharged spinning particles around an extreme Kerr-Sen black hole and calculate the maximal efficiency of the energy extraction from the Kerr-Sen black hole via super Penrose process. We consider the collision of two massive particles as well as collision of a massless particle with a massive particle. For all the cases, we find that the maximum efficiency decreases as the Kerr-Sen black hole's parameter($b=1-a$) increases.
The Penrose process in the vicinity of an extremal Banãdos-Teitelboim-Zanelli(BTZ) black hole is studied. Due to the existence of negative cosmological constant, only massless particles could escape to infinity. Hence we analyse the Penrose process by one massless particle collides with another massive particle near the horizon of BTZ black holes. Calculations of the maximum energy extraction efficiency of this process is carried out for both spinless and spinning particles. Our results show that the spinning particle have a higher energy extraction efficiency than the spinless particle. Moreo…
We consider generic axially symmetric rotating spacetimes and examine particle collisions in the ergoregion. The results are generic and agree with those obtained in the particular case of the rotating Teo wormhole in N. Tsukamoto and C. Bambi, Phys. Rev. D 91, 104040 (2015). It is shown that for sufficiently rapid rotation, the energy of a particle escaping to infinity can become arbitrary large (so-called super-Penrose process). Moreover, this energy is typically much larger than the center-of mass energy of colliding particles. In this sense the situation differs radically from that for col…
In this work, we introduce the {\it complexity factor} in the context of self--gravitating fluid distributions for the case of black holes by employing the Newman-Penrose formalism. In particular, by working with spherically symmetric and static AdS black holes, we show that the complexity factor can be interpreted in a natural way at the event horizon. Specifically, a thermodynamic interpretation for the aforementioned complexity factor in terms of a pressure partially supporting a Van der Waals-like equation of state is given.
In this work we explore the connections between Newman-Penrose scalars, including the Penrose-Rindler $\mathcal{K}$-curvature, with the equation of state of asymptotically Anti-de Sitter Reissner-Nordström black holes. After briefly reviewing the equation of state for these black holes from the point of view of both the Extended Phase Space and the Horizon Thermodynamics approaches, a geometric splitting is given for such an equation in terms of the non vanishing Newman-Penrose scalars which define the $\mathcal{K}$-curvature at the horizon. From this splitting, a possible thermodynamical inte…
In this paper, I present results from theoretical and numerical (Monte Carlo) N-particle fully relativistic 4-D analysis of Penrose scattering processes (Compton and gamma-gamma-->e-e+) in the ergosphere of a supermassive or stellar mass Kerr (rotating) black hole. Specifically, the escape conditions and the escaping orbits of the Penrose pair production (gamma-gamma-->e-e+) electrons are analyzed, revealing that these particles escape along collimated, jet geodesic trajectories encircling the polar axis. Such collimated vortical tightly wound coil-like trajectories of relativistic particles a…
We investigate the effect of superradiance shielding for the analogue rotating black holes simulated by optical vortices by calculating the radial motion of massless particles in such spacetime background. We add the conditions $E<LΩ_{r_{e}}$ and $L>0$ to judge the classically forbidden region of superradiance. It is found that the superradiance forbidden region exists near the static limit inside the ergosphere, which will limit the classical Penrose process for the particles with some specific energies and angular momenta. Once these particles satisfying the superradiance conditions aremeasur…
Recently, O.B.Zaslavskii considers the collision near the horizon of the extremal Kerr black hole that produces two particles and one of two particles has divergent conserved killing energy(the so called super Penrose process). O.B.Zaslavskii shows this particle can not move in a asymptotic region in this universe. This means super Penrose process for extremal Kerr black hole is impossible. However, recently, Mandar Patil and Tomohiro Harada show this particle can enter event horizon, turns back and emerges through white hole event horizon into asymptotic region in other universe. This means s…
The radial motion of massive particles in the equatorial plane of the Kerr black hole is considered. Screening of the Hawking radiation and shielding of the Penrose process are examined (both insides and outside the ergosphere) and their effects on the evaporation of the black hole is studied. In particular, the locus and width of a classically forbidden region and their dependence on the particle's angular momentum and energy is analysed. Tunneling of particles between the boundaries of this region is considered and the transmission coefficient is determined.
A Penrose diagram is constructed for a spatially coherent black hole that accretes at stepwise steady rates as measured by a distant observer from an initial state described by a metric of Minkowski form. Coordinate lines are computationally derived, and radial light-like trajectories verify the viability of the diagram. Coordinate dependencies of significant features, such as the horizon and radial mass scale, are clearly demonstrated on the diagram. The onset of a singularity at the origin is shown to open a new region in space-time that contains the interior of the black hole.

Any theory that states that the basic laws of physics are time-symmetric must be strictly deterministic. Only determinism enables time reversal of entropy increase. A contradiction therefore arises between two statements of Hawking. A simulation of a system under time reversal shows how an intrinsic time arrow re-emerges, destroying the time reversal, when even slight failure of determinism occurs.
We use Penrose limits to approximate quasinormal modes with large real frequencies. The Penrose limit associates a plane wave to a region of spacetime near a null geodesic. This plane wave can be argued to geometrically realize the geometrical optics approximation. Therefore, when applied to the bound null orbits around black holes, the Penrose limit can be used to study quasinormal modes. For instance, this Penrose limit point of view makes manifest the symmetry that emerges in the geometrical optics approximation of quasinormal modes in terms of isometries of the resulting plane wave spaceti…
In the light of his recent (and fully deserved) Nobel Prize, this pedagogical paper draws attention to a fundamental tension that drove Penrose's work on general relativity. His 1965 singularity theorem (for which he got the prize) does not in fact imply the existence of black holes (even if its assumptions are met). Similarly, his versatile definition of a singular space-time does not match the generally accepted definition of a black hole (derived from his concept of null infinity). To overcome this, Penrose launched his cosmic censorship conjecture(s), whose evolution we discuss. In particu…
Energy extraction from a rotating or charged black hole is one of fascinating issues in general relativity. The collisional Penrose process is one of such extraction mechanisms and has been reconsidered intensively since Banados, Silk and West pointed out the physical importance of very high energy collisions around a maximally rotating black hole. In order to get results analytically, the test particle approximation has been adopted so far. Successive works based on this approximation scheme have not yet revealed the upper bound on the efficiency of the energy extraction because of lack of th…
We investigate the power of a collisional Penrose process with an unbound energy extraction from an extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole. This process takes infinite time in a time coordinate at a constant radial coordinate outside of the black hole. For black holes as a power plant, the power of the process for an observer far away from the black hole can be useful. We define the power as energy gain from the extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole divided by the time interval of the process in a coordinate time; we estimate the upper bound of the power in a near-horizon limit, while the effic…
Particles or waves scattered from a rotating black hole can be amplified through the process of Penrose superradiance, though this cannot currently be observed in an astrophysical setting. However, analogue gravity studies can create generic rotating geometries exhibiting an ergoregion, and this led to the first observation of Penrose superradiance as the over-reflection of water waves from a rotating fluid vortex. Here we theoretically demonstrate that Penrose superradiance arises naturally in the field of nonlinear optics. In particular, we elucidate the mechanism by which a signal beam can …

In a previous article we derived a class of solutions to the force-free magnetosphere in a Kerr background. Here, the streaming surface, defined by constant values of the toriodal component of the electromagnetic vector potential $A$, were generated by constant values of $θ$. The electromagnetic current vector flowed along the in-falling principle null geodesic vector of the geometry. Subsequently, we generalized this to obtain an out-going principle null geodesic vector as well. In this article, we derive solutions that are complimentary to the above mentioned criteria. Namely, here the solut…

We consider collision of two particles 1 and 2 near the horizon of the extremal rotating axially symmetric neutral generic black hole producing particles 3 and 4. We discuss the scenario in which both particles 3 and 4 fall into a black hole and move in a white hole region. If particle 1 is fine-tuned, the energy $E_{c.m.}$ in the centre of mass grows unbounded (the Bañados-Silk-West effect). Then, particle 3 \ can, in principle, reach a flat infinity in another universe. If not only $E_{c.m.}$ but also the corresponding Killing energy $E$ is unbounded, this gives a so-called super-Penrose pro…
In this work we investigate the consequences of running gravitational coupling on the properties of rotating black holes. Apart from the changes induced in the space-time structure of such black holes, we also study the implications to Penrose process and geodetic precession. We are motivated by the functional form of gravitational coupling previously investigated in the context of infra-red limit of asymptotic safe gravity theory. In this approach, the involvement of a new parameter $\tildeξ$ in this solution makes it different from Schwarzschild black hole. The Killing horizon, event horizon…
In this paper we continue our study of the non-linear response of a Schwarzschild black hole to an ingoing gravitational wave by computing the Newman-Penrose (NP) constants. The NP constants are five complex, supertranslation-invariant quantities defined on null infinity $\mathscr{I}^+$ and although put forward in the 60's, they have never been computed in a non-stationary setting. We accomplish this through a numerical implementation of Friedrich's generalized conformal field equations whose semi-global evolution yields direct access to $\mathscr{I}+$. Generalizations of the NP constants' int…
Explicitly computed Penrose diagrams are plotted for a classical model of black hole formation and evaporation, in which black holes form by the accretion of infalling spherical shells of matter and subsequently evaporate by emitting spherical shells of Hawking radiation. This model is based on known semiclassical effects, but is not a full solution of semiclassical gravity. The method allows arbitrary interior metrics of the form $ds^2=-f(r)\,dt^2+f(r)^{-1}\,dr^2+r^2\,dΩ^2$, including singular and nonsingular models. Matter dynamics are visualized by explicitly plotting proper density in the …
The Penrose inequality estimates the lower bound of the mass of a black hole in terms of the area of its horizon. This bound is relatively loose for extremal or near extremal black holes. We propose a new Penrose-like inequality for static black holes involving the mass, area of the black hole event horizon and temperature. Our inequality includes the Penrose inequality as its corollary, and it is saturated by both the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström black holes. In the spherically-symmetric case, we prove this new inequality by assuming both the null and trace energy conditions.
Properties of particles in Kerr metric are compared with properties of particles in rotating coordinates in Minkowski space-time. It is shown that particles with negative and zero energies existing in the ergosphere of the rotating black hole also exist in the region out of the static limit in rotating coordinates in Minkowski space-time. Some similarities like the Penrose process and differences in both cases are analyzed.
Various higher-dimensional black holes have been shown to be unstable by studying linearized gravitational perturbations. A simpler method for demonstrating instability is to find initial data that describes a small perturbation of the black hole and violates a Penrose inequality. An easy way to construct initial data is by conformal rescaling of the unperturbed black hole initial data. For a compactified black string, we construct initial data which violates the inequality almost exactly where the Gregory-Laflamme instability appears. We then use the method to confirm the existence of the "ul…
