A Penrose diagram is constructed for a spatially coherent black hole that accretes at stepwise steady rates as measured by a distant observer from an initial state described by a metric of Minkowski form. Coordinate lines are computationally derived, and radial light-like trajectories verify the viability of the diagram. Coordinate dependencies of significant features, such as the horizon and radial mass scale, are clearly demonstrated on the diagram. The onset of a singularity at the origin is shown to open a new region in space-time that contains the interior of the black hole.

A Penrose diagram is constructed for an example black hole that evaporates at a steady rate as measured by a distant observer, until the mass vanishes, yielding a final state Minkowski space-time. Coordinate dependencies of significant features, such as the horizon and coordinate anomalies, are clearly demonstrated on the diagram. The large-scale causal structure of the space-time is briefly discussed.
A Penrose diagram is constructed for a spatially coherent black hole that smoothly begins an accretion, then excretes symmetrically as measured by a distant observer, with the initial and final states described by a metric of Minkowski form. Coordinate curves on the diagram are computationally derived. Causal relationships between space-time regions are briefly discussed. The life cycle of the black hole demonstrably leaves asymptotic observers in an unaltered Minkowski space-time of uniform conformal scale.
An algorithm is given for explicitly computing Penrose diagrams for spacetimes of the form $ds^2 = -f(r)\, dt^2 + f(r)^{-1} \, dr^2 + r^2 \, dΩ^2$. The resulting diagram coordinates are shown to extend the metric continuously and nondegenerately across an arbitrary number of horizons. The method is extended to include piecewise approximations to dynamically evolving spacetimes using a standard hypersurface junction procedure. Examples generated by an implementation of the algorithm are shown for standard and new cases. In the appendix, this algorithm is compared to existing methods.
For general relativistic, inviscid, axisymmetric flow around Kerr black hole one may choose different flow thickness. The stationary flow equations can be solved using methods of dynamical system to get transonic accretion flows , i.e, flow infalling in the blackhole that turns supersonic from subsonic with decreasing radial distance, or vice versa. This transonic flows are obtained by choosing the particular flow passing through critical points of phase portrait. For certain flow thickness like the one maintaining conical shape, the sonic point coincide with the critical point. But there are …
Explicitly computed Penrose diagrams are plotted for a classical model of black hole formation and evaporation, in which black holes form by the accretion of infalling spherical shells of matter and subsequently evaporate by emitting spherical shells of Hawking radiation. This model is based on known semiclassical effects, but is not a full solution of semiclassical gravity. The method allows arbitrary interior metrics of the form $ds^2=-f(r)\,dt^2+f(r)^{-1}\,dr^2+r^2\,dΩ^2$, including singular and nonsingular models. Matter dynamics are visualized by explicitly plotting proper density in the …
We analyse the causal structure of the two dimensional (2D) reduced background used in the perturbative treatment of a head-on collision of two $D$-dimensional Aichelburg-Sexl gravitational shock waves. After defining all causal boundaries, namely the future light-cone of the collision and the past light-cone of a future observer, we obtain characteristic coordinates using two independent methods. The first is a geometrical construction of the null rays which define the various light cones, using a parametric representation. The second is a transformation of the 2D reduced wave operator for th…
We perform Hamiltonian reduction of a model in which 2+1 dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant is coupled to a cylindrically symmetric dust shell. The resulting action contains only a finite number of degrees of freedom. The phase space consists of two copies of $ADS^2$ -- both coordinate and momentum space are curved. Different regions in the Penrose diagram can be identified with different patches of $ADS^2$ momentum space. Quantization in the momentum representation becomes particularly simple in the vicinity of the horizon, where one can neglect momentum non-commutativity…
Dynamic space-times, especially those manifesting horizons, provide useful laboratories for examining how macroscopic quantum behaviors consistently co-generate gravitational phenomena. For this reason, the behaviors and large-scale causal structures of spatially coherent dynamic black holes will be explored in this presentation. Geodesic motions on an evaporating black hole will also be presented. Research recently completed with Beth Brown, including her final Penrose diagram for an accreting black hole, will be presented.
We study the conformal structure of exotic (non-big-bang) singularity universes using the hybrid big-bang/exotic singularity/big-bang and big-rip/exotic singularity/big-rip models by investigating their appropriate Penrose diagrams. We show that the diagrams have the standard structure for the big-bang and big-rip and that exotic singularities appear just as the constant time hypersurfaces for the time of a singularity and because of their geodesic completeness are potentially transversable. We also comment on some applications and extensions of the Penrose diagram method in studying exotic si…
Analytical extensions and resulting Penrose diagrams are given for the solutions of a simple 2d dilaton gravity theory describing black holes which are static as viewed by asymptotically accelerated observers.

The fate of matter forming a black hole is still an open problem, although models of quantum gravity corrected black holes are available. In loop quantum gravity (LQG) models were presented, which resolve the classical singularity in the centre of the black hole by means of a black-to-white hole transition, but neglect the collapse process. The situation is similar in other quantum gravity approaches, where eternal non-singular models are available. In this paper, a strategy is presented to generalise these eternal models to dynamical collapse models by surface matching. Assuming 1) the validi…
We examine the global structure of scalar field critical collapse spacetimes using a characteristic double-null code. It can integrate past the horizon without any coordinate problems, due to the careful choice of constraint equations used in the evolution. The limiting sequence of sub- and supercritical spacetimes presents an apparent paradox in the expected Penrose diagrams, which we address in this paper. We argue that the limiting spacetime converges pointwise to a unique limit for all r>0, but not uniformly. The r=0 line is different in the two limits. We interpret that the two different …
It has for long been an article of faith among astrophysicists that black hole spin energy is responsible for powering the relativistic jets seen in accreting black holes. Two recent advances have strengthened the case. First, numerical general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of accreting spinning black holes show that relativistic jets form spontaneously. In at least some cases, there is unambiguous evidence that much of the jet energy comes from the black hole, not the disk. Second, spin parameters of a number of accreting stellar-mass black holes have been measured. For ballist…
The radial motion of photons emitted near the horizon of a black hole that evaporates at a steady rate is examined. The space-time of the black hole is generated using non-orthogonal coordinates. It is shown that some photons that are initially drawn towards the singularity can escape falling into the horizon. The behaviors of various outgoing and ingoing photons are clearly demonstrated through the use of a Penrose diagram.
We construct Penrose diagrams for Schwarzschild spacetimes joined by massless shells of matter, in the process correcting minor flaws in the similar diagrams drawn by Dray and 't Hooft, and confirming their result that such shells generate a horizon shift. We then consider shells with negative energy density, showing that the horizon shift in this case allows for travel between the heretofore causally separated exterior regions of the Schwarzschild geometry. These drawing techniques are then used to investigate the properties of successive shells, joining multiple Schwarzschild regions. Again,…
A procedure to derive a unitary evolution law for a quantised black hole, has been proposed by the author. The proposal requires that one starts off with the entire Penrose diagram for the eternal black hole as the background metric, after which a procedure was proposed to identify the two asymptotic domains of this metric, such that they both refer to the same outside world. In this paper we focus on the need to include time reversal in applying this identification. This forces us to postulate the existence of an 'anti-vacuum' state in our world, which is the state where energy density reache…
Null and timelike geodesics around a 2+1 black hole are determined. Complete geodesics of both types exist in the rotating black-hole background, but not in the spinless case. Upper and lower bounds for the radial size of the orbits are given in all cases and the possibility of passing from one black hole exterior spacetime to another is discussed using the Penrose diagrams. An analysis of particle motions by means of effective potentials and orbit graphs are also included.
We study a holographic construction of conformal blocks in the Regge limit of four-point scalar correlation functions by using coordinates of the two-sided Rindler-AdS black hole. As a generalization of geodesic Witten diagrams, we construct diagrams with four external scalar fields in the Rindler-AdS black hole by integrating over two half-geodesics between the centers of Penrose diagrams and points at the AdS boundary. We demonstrate that late-time behaviors of the diagrams coincide with the Regge behaviors of conformal blocks. We also point out their relevance with the pole-skipping phenome…
By extending the charged Vaidya metric to cover all of spacetime, we obtain a Penrose diagram for the formation and evaporation of a charged black hole. In this construction, the singularity is time-like. The entire spacetime can be predicted from initial conditions if boundary conditions at the singularity are known.
Accelerating black holes are described by the so-called C-metric. In this work, we analyse the causal structure of such black holes by using null geodesics. We construct explicitly the relevant Penrose diagrams. First, we recover well-known results associated with the sub-accelerating black holes. Then, we extend the study to the super-accelerating case, in which an additional essential singularity appears. In addition, we consider accelerating black holes with negative masses. We show that they are equivalent to the geometry described by the black hole metric beyond conformal infinity. We com…
The causal structure of the recent loop quantum gravity black hole collapse model [1] is analysed. As the spacetime is only approximately diffeomorphism invariant up to powers of $\hbar$, it is not straight forwardly possible to find global conformally compactified coordinates and to construct the Penrose diagram. Therefore, radial in- and outgoing light rays are studied to extract the causal features and sketch a causal diagram. It was found that the eternal metric [2], which is the vacuum solution of the collapse model, has a causal horizon. However, in the collapsing case light rays travel …
We derive and discuss black-hole solutions to the gravitating O(3) $σ$ model in (2+1) dimensions. Three different kinds of static black holes are found. One of these resembles the static BTZ black hole, another is completely free of singularities, and the last type has the same Penrose diagram as the (3+1)-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole. We also construct static and dynamical multi-black hole systems.
We add a prescription to the Newman-Janis algorithm in order to use it as a means of finding new extended (`through r<0') rotating black hole spacetimes from static spherically symmetric ones. Then, we apply the procedure to a quantum improved black hole spacetime coming from Quantum Einstein Gravity. The goal is to get a maximally extended spacetime corresponding to a non-singular rotating black hole emulating the standard maximally extended Kerr black hole in regions where quantum effects are negligible. We rigourously check for the existence of scalar curvature singularities in the quantum …
A naive introduction of a dependency of the mass of a black hole on the Schwarzschild time coordinate results in singular behavior of curvature invariants at the horizon, violating expectations from complementarity. If instead a temporal dependence is introduced in terms of a coordinate akin to the river time representation, the Ricci scalar is nowhere singular away from the origin. It is found that for a shrinking mass scale due to evaporation, the null radial geodesics that generate the horizon are slightly displaced from the coordinate singularity. In addition, a changing horizon scale sign…
We obtain the general static, spherically symmetric solution for the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system in four dimensions with a phantom coupling for the dilaton and/or the Maxwell field. This leads to new classes of black hole solutions, with single or multiple horizons. Using the geodesic equations, we analyse the corresponding Penrose diagrams revealing, in some cases, new causal structures.
We describe the dynamics of a thin spherically symmetric gravitating shell in the Reissner-Nordstrom metric of the electrically charged black hole. The energy-momentum tensor of electrically neutral shell is modelled by the perfect fluid with a polytropic equation of state. The motion of a shell is described fully analytically in the particular case of the dust equation of state. We construct the Carter-Penrose diagrams for the global geometry of the eternal black hole, which illustrate all possible types of solutions for moving shell. It is shown that for some specific range of initial parame…
Static, spherically symmetric solutions of the field equations for a particular dimensional continuation of general relativity with negative cosmological constant are studied. The action is, in odd dimensions, the Chern-Simons form for the anti-de Sitter group and, in even dimensions, the Euler density constructed with the Lorentz part of the anti-de Sitter curvature tensor. Both actions are special cases of the Lovelock action, and they reduce to the Hilbert action (with negative cosmological constant) in the lower dimensional cases $\mbox{$\cal D$}=3$ and $\mbox{$\cal D$}=4$. Exact black hol…
This review describes the events leading up to the discovery of the Kerr metric in 1963 and the enormous impact the discovery has had in the subsequent 50 years. The review discusses the Penrose process, the four laws of black hole mechanics, uniqueness of the solution, and the no-hair theorems. It also includes Kerr perturbation theory and its application to black hole stability and quasi-normal modes. The Kerr metric's importance in the astrophysics of quasars and accreting stellar-mass black hole systems is detailed. A theme of the review is the "miraculous" nature of the solution, both in …
For self-gravitating, static, spherically symmetric, minimally coupled scalar fields with arbitrary potentials and negative kinetic energy (favored by the cosmological observations), we give a classification of possible regular solutions to the field equations with flat, de Sitter and AdS asymptotic behavior. Among the 16 presented classes of regular rsolutions are traversable wormholes, Kantowski-Sachs (KS) cosmologies beginning and ending with de Sitter stages, and asymptotically flat black holes (BHs). The Penrose diagram of a regular BH is Schwarzschild-like, but the singularity at $r=0$ i…
This year marks the 100th anniversary of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity (1915-2015). The first nontrivial solution of the Einstein field equations was derived by Karl Schwarzschild in 1916. This Note will focus mainly on the Schwarzschild solution and the remarkable developments which it inspired, the most dramatic being the prediction of black holes. Later extensions of Schwarzschild's spacetime structure has led to even wilder conjectures, such as white holes and passages to other universes. Penrose diagrams are introduced as compact representations of extended spacetime structures.…
Astronomers have discovered two populations of black holes: (i) stellar-mass black holes with masses in the range 5 to 30 solar masses, millions of which are present in each galaxy in the universe, and (ii) supermassive black holes with masses in the range 10^6 to 10^{10} solar masses, one each in the nucleus of every galaxy. There is strong circumstantial evidence that all these objects are true black holes with event horizons. The measured masses of supermassive black hole are strongly correlated with properties of their host galaxies, suggesting that these black holes, although extremely sm…
Equipped with the tools of (spherically reduced) dilaton gravity in first order formulation and with the results for the lowest order S-matrix for s-wave gravitational scattering (P. Fischer, D. Grumiller, W. Kummer, and D. Vassilevich, gr-qc/0105034) new properties of the ensuing cross-section are discussed. We find CPT invariance, despite of the non-local nature of our effective theory and discover pseudo-self-similarity in its kinematic sector. After presenting the Carter-Penrose diagram for the corresponding virtual black hole geometry we encounter distributional contributions to its Ricci…
This article reviews the current status of black hole astrophysics, focusing on topics of interest to a physics audience. Astronomers have discovered dozens of compact objects with masses greater than 3 solar masses, the likely maximum mass of a neutron star. These objects are identified as black hole candidates. Some of the candidates have masses of 5 to 20 solar masses and are found in X-ray binaries, while the rest have masses from a million to a billion solar masses and are found in galactic nuclei. A variety of methods are being tried to estimate the spin parameters of the candidate black…
This thesis addresses some classical and semi-classical aspects of black holes using an effective membrane representation of the event horizon. The classical "membrane paradigm" equations are derived from an underlying action formulation, even though the equations are dissipative. It is shown how the membrane action can also account for the hole's entropy, including the numerical factor. Two short derivations of Hawking radiation are then presented, the first based on particles in a dynamical geometry and the second on the membrane. The calculations obey conservation laws and lead to a correct…
We study the formation and the evaporation of a spherically symmetric black hole in conformal gravity. From the collapse of a spherically symmetric thin shell of radiation, we find a singularity-free non-rotating black hole. This black hole has the same Hawking temperature as a Schwarzschild black hole with the same mass, and it completely evaporates either in a finite or in an infinite time, depending on the ensemble. We consider the analysis both in the canonical and in the micro-canonical statistical ensembles. Last, we discuss the corresponding Penrose diagram of this physical process.
We clarify the status of two known solutions to the 5-dimensional vacuum Einstein field equations derived by Liu, Mashhoon & Wesson (LMW) and Fukui, Seahra & Wesson (FSW), respectively. Both 5-metrics explicitly embed 4-dimensional Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker cosmologies with a wide range of characteristics. We show that both metrics are also equivalent to 5-dimensional topological black hole (TBH) solutions, which is demonstrated by finding explicit coordinate transformations from the TBH to LMW and FSW line elements. We argue that the equivalence is a direct consequence of Birkhoff's …

The non-rotating BTZ solution is expressed in terms of coordinates that allow for an arbitrary time-dependent scale factor in the boundary metric. We provide explicit expressions for the coordinate transformation that generates this form of the metric, and determine the regions of the complete Penrose diagram that are convered by our parametrization. This construction is utilized in order to compute the stress-energy tensor of the dual CFT on a time-dependent background. We study in detail the expansion of radial null geodesic congruences in the BTZ background for various forms of the scale fa…
We investigate a tunneling and emission process of a thin-shell from a Schwarzschild black hole, where the shell was initially located beyond the Einstein-Rosen bridge and finally appears at the right side of the Penrose diagram. In order to obtain such a solution, we should assume that the areal radius of the black hole horizon increases after the tunneling. Hence, there is a parameter range such that the tunneling rate is exponentially enhanced, rather than suppressed. We may have two interpretations regarding this. First, such a tunneling process from the past horizon is improbable by physi…
An approach to black hole quantization is proposed wherein it is assumed that quantum coherence is preserved. A consequence of this is that the Penrose diagram describing gravitational collapse will show the same topological structure as flat Minkowski space. After giving our motivations for such a quantization procedure we formulate the background field approximation, in which particles are divided into "hard" particles and "soft" particles. The background space-time metric depends both on the in-states and on the out-states. We present some model calculations and extensive discussions. In pa…
Production and acceleration mechanisms of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) of energy $>10^{20}$eV, clearly beyond the GZK-cutoff limit remain unclear that points to exotic nature of the phenomena. Recent observations of extragalactic neutrino may indicate the source of UHECRs being an extragalactic supermassive black hole (SMBH). We demonstrate that ultra-efficient energy extraction from rotating SMBH driven by the magnetic Penrose process (MPP) could indeed foot the bill. We envision ionization of neutral particles, such as neutron beta-decay, skirting close to the black hole horizon th…
The semiclassical geometry of charged black holes is studied in the context of a two-dimensional dilaton gravity model where effects due to pair-creation of charged particles can be included in a systematic way. The classical mass-inflation instability of the Cauchy horizon is amplified and we find that gravitational collapse of charged matter results in a spacelike singularity that precludes any extension of the spacetime geometry. At the classical level, a static solution describing an eternal black hole has timelike singularities and multiple asymptotic regions. The corresponding semiclassi…
