In this thesis we investigate finite size effects in 1+1 dimensional integrable QFT. In particular we consider matrix elements of local operators (finite volume form factors) and vacuum expectation values and correlation functions at finite temperature. In the first part of the thesis we give a complete description of the finite volume form factors in terms of the infinite volume form factors (solutions of the bootstrap program) and the S-matrix of the theory. The calculations are correct to all orders in the inverse of the volume, only exponentially decaying (residual) finite size effects are neglected. We also consider matrix elements with disconnected pieces and determine the general rule for evaluating such contributions in a finite volume. The analytic results are tested against numerical data obtained by the truncated conformal space approach in the Lee-Yang model and the Ising model in a magnetic field. In a separate section we also evaluate the leading exponential correction (the $μ$-term) associated to multi-particle energies and matrix elements. In the second part of the thesis we show that finite volume factors can be used to derive a systematic low-temperature expansion for correlation functions at finite temperature. In the case of vacuum expectation values the series is worked out up to the third non-trivial order and a complete agreement with the LeClair-Mussardo formula is observed. A preliminary treatment of the two-point function is also given by considering the first nontrivial contributions.
We construct the quasi-classical approximation of the form factors in finite volume using the separation of variables. The latter is closely related to the Baxter equation.
We initiate a systematic method to calculate both the finite volume energy levels and form factors from the momentum space finite volume two-point function. By expanding the two point function in the volume we extracted the leading exponential volume correction both to the energy of a moving particle state and to the simplest non-diagonal form factor. The form factor corrections are given in terms of a regularized infinite volume 3-particle form factor and terms related to the Lüsher correction of the momentum quantization. We tested these results against second order Lagrangian and Hamiltonia…
We developed the theory of finite volume form factors in the presence of integrable defects. These finite volume form factors are expressed in terms of the infinite volume form factors and the finite volume density of states and incorporate all polynomial corrections in the inverse of the volume. We tested our results, in the defect Lee-Yang model, against numerical data obtained by truncated conformal space approach (TCSA), which we improved by renormalization group methods adopted to the defect case. To perform these checks we determined the infinite volume defect form factors in the Lee-Yan…
In this paper we demonstrate, that the light-cone lattice approach for the Massive-Thirring (sine-Gordon) model, through the quantum inverse scattering method, admits an appropriate framework for computing the finite volume form-factors of local operators of the model. In this work we compute the finite volume diagonal matrix elements of the $U(1)$ conserved current in the pure soliton sector of the theory. Based on the systematic large volume expansion of our results, we conjecture an exact expression for the finite volume expectation values of local operators in pure soliton states. At large…
This thesis presents Lüscher's $μ$- and $F$-term corrections to volume dependence of non-diagonal finite volume form factors in the scaling Lee-Yang model. An explicit calculation proves the suspected relation that the $μ$-terms known previously from bound state quantization can be obtained from the $F$-term integrals by modifying the contour of integration such that it picks up residues of appropriate poles in the integrand. The fact that these two different approaches for getting the $μ$-terms give the same result underpins the formal derivation of the $F$-term in arXiv:1904.00492 which was …
We propose an expression for the classical limit of diagonal form factors in which we integrate the corresponding observable over the moduli space of classical solutions. In infinite volume the integral has to be regularized by proper subtractions and we present the one, which corresponds to the classical limit of the connected diagonal form factors. In finite volume the integral is finite and can be expressed in terms of the classical infinite volume diagonal form factors and subvolumes of the moduli space. We analyze carefully the periodicity properties of the finite volume moduli space and …
We study the leading order finite size correction (Luscher's mu-term) associated to moving one-particle states, arbitrary scattering states and finite volume form factors in 1+1 dimensional integrable models. Our method is based on the idea that the mu-term is intimately connected to the inner structure of the particles, ie. their composition under the bootstrap program. We use an appropriate analytic continuation of the Bethe-Yang equations to quantize bound states in finite volume and obtain the leading mu-term (associated to symmetric particle fusions) by calculating the deviations from the…
In this paper we consider a special kind of three-point functions of HHL type at weak coupling in N=4 SYM theory and analyze its volume dependence. At strong coupling this kind of three-point functions were studied recently by Bajnok, Janik and Wereszczynski [1]. The authors considered some cases of HHL correlator in the su(2) sector and, relying on their explicit results, formulated a conjecture about the form of the volume dependence of the symmetric HHL structure constant to be valid at any coupling up to wrapping corrections. In order to test this hypothesis we considered the HHL correlato…
We derive an exact formula for finite volume excited state mean values of local operators in 1+1 dimensional Integrable QFT with diagonal scattering. Our result is a non-trivial generalization of the LeClair-Mussardo series, which is a form factor expansion for finite size ground state mean values.
Multi-soliton form factors in sine-Gordon theory from the bootstrap are compared to finite volume matrix elements computed using the truncated conformal space approach. We find convincing agreement, and resolve most of the issues raised in a previous work.
We describe the volume dependence of matrix elements of local fields to all orders in inverse powers of the volume (i.e. only neglecting contributions that decay exponentially with volume). Using the scaling Lee-Yang model and the Ising model in a magnetic field as testing ground, we compare them to matrix elements extracted in finite volume using truncated conformal space approach to exact form factors obtained using the bootstrap method. We obtain solid confirmation for the form factor bootstrap, which is different from all previously available tests in that it is a non-perturbative and dire…
In this note we report on some properties of correlation numbers for 2-dimensional Liouville gravity coupled with $(2,2p+1)$ minimal model at large $p$. In the limit $p \to \infty$, for some explicitly known examples in a particular region of parameter space correlation numbers are shown to reduce to Weil-Petersson volumes, analytically continued to imaginary geodesic lengths. This marks another connection of this limit with JT-gravity. We also comment on supposed geometric meaning of the obtained answers outside of this region, in particular, the meaning of the minimal model fusion rules. Ano…
We describe the volume dependence of matrix elements of local boundary fields to all orders in inverse powers of the volume. Using the scaling boundary Lee-Yang model as testing ground, we compare the matrix elements extracted from boundary truncated conformal space approach to exact form factors obtained using the bootstrap method. We obtain solid confirmation for the boundary form factor bootstrap, which is different from all previously available tests in that it is a non-perturbative and direct comparison of exact form factors to multi-particle matrix elements of local operators, computed f…
Finite volume corrections to higher moments are important observable quantities. They make possible to differentiate between different statistical ensembles even in the thermodynamic limit. It is shown that this property is a universal one. The classical grand canonical distribution is compared to the canonical distribution in the rigorous procedure of approaching the thermodynamic limit.
We argue that the conventional method to calculate the OPE coefficients in the strong coupling limit for heavy-heavy-light operators in the N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory has to be modified by integrating the light vertex operator not only over a single string worldsheet but also over the moduli space of classical solutions corresponding to the heavy states. This reflects the fact that we are primarily interested in energy eigenstates and not coherent states. We tested our prescription for the BMN vacuum correlator, for folded strings on $S^5$ and for two-particle states. Our prescription for two…
Using a regularization by putting the system in finite volume, we develop a novel approach to form factor perturbation theory for nonintegrable models described as perturbations of integrable ones. This permits to go beyond first order in form factor perturbation theory and in principle works to any order. The procedure is carried out in detail for double sine-Gordon theory, where the vacuum energy density and breather mass correction is evaluated at second order. The results agree with those obtained from the truncated conformal space approach. The regularization procedure can also be used to…
Continuing the investigation started in a previous work, we consider form factors of integrable quantum field theories in finite volume, extending our investigation to matrix elements with disconnected pieces. Numerical verification of our results is provided by truncated conformal space approach. Such matrix elements are important in computing finite temperature correlation functions, and we give a new method for generating a low temperature expansion, which we test for the one-point function up to third order.
A semiclassical approach is used to obtain Lorentz covariant expressions for the form factors between the kink states of a quantum field theory with degenerate vacua. Implemented on a cylinder geometry it provides an estimate of the spectral representation of correlation functions in a finite volume. Illustrative examples of the applicability of the method are provided by the Sine-Gordon and the broken ϕ^4 theories in 1+1 dimensions.
A (n+1)-dimensional gravitational model with Gauss-Bonnet term and cosmological constant term is considered. When ansatz with diagonal cosmological metrics is adopted, the solutions with exponential dependence of scale factors: a_i ~ exp( v^i t), i = 1, ..., n, are analysed for n > 3. We study the stability of the solutions with non-static volume factor, i.e. if K(v) = \sum_{k = 1}^{n} v^k \neq 0. We prove that under certain restriction R imposed solutions with K(v) > 0 are stable while solutions with K(v) < 0 are unstable. Certain examples of stable solutions are presented. We show that the s…
We compare form factors in sine-Gordon theory, obtained via the bootstrap, to finite volume matrix elements computed using the truncated conformal space approach. For breather form factors, this is essentially a straightforward application of a previously developed formalism that describes the volume dependence of operator matrix elements up to corrections exponentially decaying with the volume. In the case of solitons, it is necessary to generalize the formalism to include effects of non-diagonal scattering. In some cases it is also necessary to take into account some of the exponential corre…
For quantum gravity states associated to open spin network graphs, we study how the entanglement entropy of the boundary degrees of freedom (spins on open edges) is affected by the bulk data, specifically by its combinatorial structure and by the quantum correlations among intertwiner degrees of freedom. For a specific assignment of bulk edge spins and slightly entangled intertwiners, we recover the Ryu-Takayanagi formula (with a properly (discrete) geometric notion of area, thanks to the underlying quantum gravity formalism) and its corrections due to the entanglement entropy of the bulk stat…
Quantum cosmology implies corrections to the classical equations of motion which may lead to significant departures from the classical trajectory, especially at high curvature near the big-bang singularity. Corrections could in principle be significant even in certain low-curvature regimes, provided that they add up during long cosmic evolution. The analysis of such terms is therefore an important problem to make sure that the theory shows acceptable semiclassical behavior. This paper presents a general search for terms of this type as corrections in effective equations for a k=0 isotropic qua…
We consider a class of generalized FRW type metrics in the context of higher dimensional Einstein gravity in which the extra dimensions are allowed to have different scale factors. It is shown that noncommutativity between the momenta conjugate to the internal space scale factors controls the power-law behavior of the scale factors in the extra dimensions, taming it to an oscillatory behavior. Hence noncommutativity among the internal momenta of the mini-super-\emph{phase}-space can be used to explain stabilization of the compactification volume of the internal space in a higher dimensional gr…
Predictions in an eternally inflating multiverse are meaningless unless we specify the probability measure. The scale-factor cutoff is perhaps the simplest and most successful measure which avoid catastrophic problems such as the youngness paradox, runaway problem, and Boltzmann brain problem, but it is not well defined in contracting regions with a negative cosmological constant. In this paper, we propose a new measure with properties similar to the scale-factor cutoff which is well defined everywhere. The measure is defined by a cutoff in the 4-volume spanned by infinitesimal comoving neighb…
