This thesis presents Lüscher's $μ$- and $F$-term corrections to volume dependence of non-diagonal finite volume form factors in the scaling Lee-Yang model. An explicit calculation proves the suspected relation that the $μ$-terms known previously from bound state quantization can be obtained from the $F$-term integrals by modifying the contour of integration such that it picks up residues of appropriate poles in the integrand. The fact that these two different approaches for getting the $μ$-terms give the same result underpins the formal derivation of the $F$-term in arXiv:1904.00492 which was not known until recently. In the meantime, the notions of integrable quantum field theories and those related to their treatment in finite volume are introduced to help understand the topic for readers not familiar with it.
We propose an expression for the classical limit of diagonal form factors in which we integrate the corresponding observable over the moduli space of classical solutions. In infinite volume the integral has to be regularized by proper subtractions and we present the one, which corresponds to the classical limit of the connected diagonal form factors. In finite volume the integral is finite and can be expressed in terms of the classical infinite volume diagonal form factors and subvolumes of the moduli space. We analyze carefully the periodicity properties of the finite volume moduli space and …
We consider an open string stretched between a Y=0 brane and a Y_theta=0 brane. The latter brane is rotated with respect to the former by an angle theta, and is described by a non-diagonal boundary S-matrix. This system interpolates smoothly between the Y-Y (theta =0) and the Y-bar Y (theta = pi/2) systems, which are described by diagonal boundary S-matrices. We use integrability to compute the energies of one-particle states at weak coupling up to leading wrapping order (4, 6 loops) as a function of the angle. The results for the diagonal cases exactly match with those obtained previously.
We derive the leading exponential finite volume corrections in two dimensional integrable models for non-diagonal form factors in diagonally scattering theories. These formulas are expressed in terms of the infinite volume form factors and scattering matrices. If the particles are bound states then the leading exponential finite-size corrections ($μ$-terms) are related to virtual processes in which the particles disintegrate into their constituents. For non-bound state particles the leading exponential finite-size corrections (F-terms) come from virtual particles traveling around the finite wo…
We derive an exact formula for finite volume excited state mean values of local operators in 1+1 dimensional Integrable QFT with diagonal scattering. Our result is a non-trivial generalization of the LeClair-Mussardo series, which is a form factor expansion for finite size ground state mean values.
We prove the asymptotic large volume expression of diagonal form factors in integrable models by evaluating carefully the diagonal limit of a non-diagonal form factor in which we send the rapidity of the extra particle to infinity.
Using the fermionic basis we conjecture exact expressions for diagonal finite volume matrix elements of exponential operators and their descendants in the sinh-Gordon theory. Our expressions sum up the LeClair-Mussardo type infinite series generalized by Pozsgay for excited state expectation values. We checked our formulae against the Liouville three-point functions for small, while against Pozsgay's expansion for large volumes and found complete agreement.
In this paper we present sets of linear integral equations which make possible to compute the finite volume expectation values of the trace of the stress energy tensor ($Θ$) and the $U(1)$ current ($J_μ$) in any eigenstate of the Hamiltonian of the sine-Gordon model. The solution of these equations in the large volume limit allows one to get exact analytical formulas for the expectation values in the Bethe-Yang limit. These analytical formulas are used to test an earlier conjecture for the Bethe-Yang limit of expectation values in non-diagonally scattering theories. The analytical tests have b…
In this paper we consider a special kind of three-point functions of HHL type at weak coupling in N=4 SYM theory and analyze its volume dependence. At strong coupling this kind of three-point functions were studied recently by Bajnok, Janik and Wereszczynski [1]. The authors considered some cases of HHL correlator in the su(2) sector and, relying on their explicit results, formulated a conjecture about the form of the volume dependence of the symmetric HHL structure constant to be valid at any coupling up to wrapping corrections. In order to test this hypothesis we considered the HHL correlato…
In this article we compute the anomalous dimensions for a class of operators, belonging to the SU(3) sector of the theory, that have a bare dimension of order N. For these operators the large N limit and the planar limit are distinct and summing only the planar diagrams will not capture the large N dynamics. Although the spectrum of anomalous dimensions has been computed for this class of operators, previous studies have neglected certain terms which were argued to be small. After dropping these terms diagonalizing the dilatation operator reduces to diagonalizing a set of decoupled oscillators…
We consider diagonal matrix elements of local operators between multi-soliton states in finite volume in the sine-Gordon model, and formulate a conjecture regarding their finite size dependence which is valid up to corrections exponential in the volume. This conjecture extends the results of Pozsgay and Takács which were only valid for diagonal scattering. In order to test the conjecture we implement a numerical renormalization group improved truncated conformal space approach. The numerical comparisons confirm the conjecture, which is expected to be valid for general integrable field theories…
In this paper we derive from field theory a Lüscher-formula, which gives the leading exponentially small in volume corrections to the 1-particle form-factors in non-diagonally scattering integrable quantum field theories. Our final formula is expressed in terms of appropriate expressions of 1- and 3-particle form-factors, and can be considered as the generalization of previous results obtained for diagonally scattering bosonic integrable quantum field theories. Since our formulas are also valid for fermions and operators with non-zero Lorentz-spin, we demonstrated our results in the Massive Th…
We discuss prospects for stabilizing the volume modulus of N=1 supersymmetric type IIB orientifold compactifications using only perturbative corrections to the Kahler potential. Concretely, we consider the known string loop corrections and tree-level alpha' corrections. They break the no-scale structure of the potential, which otherwise prohibits stabilizing the volume modulus. We argue that when combined, these corrections provide enough flexibility to stabilize the volume of the internal space without non-perturbative effects, although we are not able to present a completely explicit example…
We study the asymptotic volume dependence of the heavy-heavy-light three-point functions in the $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills theory using the hexagon bootstrap approach, where the volume is the length of the heavy operator. We extend the analysis of our previous short letter 1511.06199 to the general case where the heavy operators can be in any rank one sector and the light operator being a generic non-BPS operator. We prove the conjecture of Bajnok, Janik and Wereszczynski 1404.4556 up to leading finite size corrections.
We extend a previous analysis of flavor-changing fermion-graviton vertices, by adding the one-loop SM corrections to the flavor diagonal fermion-graviton interactions. Explicit analytical expressions taking into account fermion masses for the on-shell form factors are computed and presented. The infrared safety of the fermion-graviton vertices against radiative corrections of soft photons and gluons is proved, by extending the ordinary infrared cancellation mechanism between real and virtual emissions to the gravity case. These results can be easily generalized to fermion couplings with massiv…
We study the finite-temperature expectation values of exponential fields in the sine-Gordon model. Using finite-volume regularization, we give a low-temperature expansion of such quantities in terms of the connected diagonal matrix elements, for which we provide explicit formulas. For special values of the exponent, computations by other methods are available and used to validate our findings. Our results can also be interpreted as a further support for a previous conjecture about the connection between finite- and infinite-volume form factors valid up to terms exponentially decaying in the vo…
It has been recently found that the equations of motion of several semiclassical systems must take into account terms arising from Berry phases contributions. Those terms are responsible for the spin Hall effect in semiconductor as well as the Magnus effect of light propagating in inhomogeneous media. Intensive ongoing research on this subject seems to indicate that a broad class of quantum systems may be affected by Berry phase terms. It is therefore important to find a general procedure allowing for the determination of semiclassical Hamiltonian with Berry Phase corrections. This article pre…
The finite volume problem of O(2N) sigma models with integrable diagonal boundaries on a finite interval is investigated. The double row transfer matrix is diagonalized by Algebraic Bethe Ansatz. The boundary Bethe Yang equations for the particle rapidities and the accompanying Bethe Ansatz equations are derived.
We consider the Type IIB string theory in the presence of various extra $7/\bar 7$-brane pairs compactified on a warped Calabi-Yau threefold that admits a conifold singularity. We demonstrate that the volume modulus can be stabilized perturbatively at a non-supersymmetric $AdS_4/dS_4$ vacuum by the effective potential that includes the stringy $(α^\prime)^3$ correction obtained by Becker {\it et al.} together with a combination of positive tension and anomalous negative tension terms generated by the additional 7-brane-antibrane pairs.
Recent results suggest that new corrections to holographic entanglement entropy should arise near phase transitions of the associated Ryu-Takayanagi (RT) surface. We study such corrections by decomposing the bulk state into fixed-area states and conjecturing that a certain `diagonal approximation' will hold. In terms of the bulk Newton constant $G$, this yields a correction of order $O(G^{-1/2})$ near such transitions, which is in particular larger than generic corrections from the entanglement of bulk quantum fields. However, the correction becomes exponentially suppressed away from the trans…
Inflationary models whose vacuum energy arises from a D-term are believed not to suffer from the supergravity eta problem of F-term inflation. That is, D-term models have the desirable property that the inflaton mass can naturally remain much smaller than the Hubble scale. We observe that this advantage is lost in models based on string compactifications whose volume is stabilized by a nonperturbative superpotential: the F-term energy associated with volume stabilization causes the eta problem to reappear. Moreover, any shift symmetries introduced to protect the inflaton mass will typically be…
The vacuum expectation values of conserved currents play an essential role in the generalized hydrodynamics of integrable quantum field theories. We use analytic continuation to extend these results for the excited state expectation values in a finite volume. Our formulas are valid for diagonally scattering theories and incorporate all finite size corrections.
The recent progress in embedding inflation in string theory has made it clear that the problem of moduli stabilization cannot be ignored in this context. In many models a special role is played by the volume modulus, which is modified in the presence of mobile branes. The challenge is to stabilize this modified volume while keeping the inflaton mass small compared to the Hubble parameter. It is then crucial to know not only how the volume modulus is modified, but also to have control over the dependence of the potential on the inflaton field. We address these questions within a simple setting:…
We initiate a systematic method to calculate both the finite volume energy levels and form factors from the momentum space finite volume two-point function. By expanding the two point function in the volume we extracted the leading exponential volume correction both to the energy of a moving particle state and to the simplest non-diagonal form factor. The form factor corrections are given in terms of a regularized infinite volume 3-particle form factor and terms related to the Lüsher correction of the momentum quantization. We tested these results against second order Lagrangian and Hamiltonia…
We investigate a version of fixed scalars for non-dilatonic branes which correspond to dilatations of the brane world-volume. We obtain a cross-section whose world-volume interpretation falls out naturally from an investigation of the breaking of conformal invariance by the irrelevant Born-Infeld corrections to Yang-Mills theory. From the same irrelevant world-volume operator we obtain the leading correction to the cross-sections of minimal scalars. This correction can be obtained in supergravity via an improved matching of inner and outer solutions to the minimal wave equation.
It has been recently found that the equations of motion of several semiclassical systems must take into account anomalous velocity terms arising from Berry phase contributions. Those terms are for instance responsible for the spin Hall effect in semiconductors or the gravitational birefringence of photons propagating in a static gravitational field. Intensive ongoing research on this subject seems to indicate that actually a broad class of quantum systems might have their dynamics affected by Berry phase terms. In this article we review the implication of a new diagonalization method for gener…
In a recent paper, we derived the leading alpha' corrections to the Kahler potentials for moduli in (0,2) heterotic compactifications. In the same spirit as the LARGE volume stabilization scenario for type IIB orientifolds, we examine whether these quantum corrections, together with a combination of tree-level and non-perturbative superpotentials, are sufficient to stabilize the overall volume modulus at large values. This is not a priori obvious, since the corrections we found are of a lower order than those used in the type IIB setting. Nevertheless, we find that stabilizing the volume at (e…
We analyse a new ${\cal N}=1$ string tree level correction at ${\cal O}(α'^2)$ to the Kähler potential of the volume moduli of type IIB Calabi-Yau flux compactification found recently by Grimm, Savelli and Weissenbacher~\cite{Grimm:2013gma} and its impact on the moduli potential. We find that it imposes a strong lower bound the Calabi-Yau volume in the Large Volume Scenario of moduli stabilisation. For KKLT-like scenarios we find that consistency of the action imposes an upper bound on the flux superpotential $|W_0|\lesssim 10^{-3}$, while parametrically controlled survival of the KKLT minimum…
In hep-th/9903210 (curvature)$^2$ terms of the effective D-brane action were derived to lowest order in the string coupling. Their results are correct up to ambiguous terms which involve the second fundamental form of the D-brane. We compute five point string amplitudes on the disk. We compare the subleading order in $α'$ of the string amplitudes with the proposed lagrangian of hep-th/9903210 supplemented by the ambiguous terms. The comparison determines the complete form of the gravitational terms in the effective D-brane action to order ${\calO}(α^{' 2})$. Our results are valid for arbitrary…
Results from spectral geometry such as Weyl's formula can be used to relate the thermodynamic properties of a free massless field to the spatial manifold on which it is defined. We begin by calculating the free energy in two cases: manifolds posessing a boundary and spheres. The subextensive contributions allow us to test the Cardy-Verlinde formula and offer a new perspective on why it only holds in a free theory if one allows for a change in the overall coefficient. After this we derive an expression for the density of states that takes the form of a Taylor series. This series leads to an imp…
We analyse several explicit toric examples of compact K3-fibred Calabi-Yau three-folds which can be used for the study of string dualities and are crucial ingredients for the construction of LARGE Volume type IIB vacua with promising applications to cosmology and particle phenomenology. In order to build a phenomenologically viable model, on top of the two moduli corresponding to the base and the K3 fibre, we demand also the existence of two additional rigid divisors: the first supporting the non-perturbative effects needed to achieve moduli stabilisation, and the second allowing the presence …
We study the topological conditions for general Calabi-Yaus to get a non-supersymmetric AdS exponentially large volume minimum of the scalar potential in flux compactifications of IIB string theory. We show that negative Euler number and the existence of at least one blow-up mode resolving point-like singularities are necessary and sufficient conditions for moduli stabilisation with exponentially large volumes. We also analyse the general effects of string loop corrections on this scenario. While the combination of alpha' and nonperturbative corrections are sufficient to stabilise blow-up mode…
We study the heavy-heavy-light (HHL) three-point functions in the planar N = 4 super-Yang- Mills theory using the recently proposed hexagon bootstrap program [arXiv:1505.06745]. We prove the conjecture of Bajnok, Janik and Wereszczynski [arXiv:1404.4556] on the polynomial L-dependence of HHL structure constant up to the leading finite-size corrections, where L is the length of the heavy operators. The proof is presented for a specific set-up but the method can be applied to more general situations.
We argue that the conventional method to calculate the OPE coefficients in the strong coupling limit for heavy-heavy-light operators in the N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory has to be modified by integrating the light vertex operator not only over a single string worldsheet but also over the moduli space of classical solutions corresponding to the heavy states. This reflects the fact that we are primarily interested in energy eigenstates and not coherent states. We tested our prescription for the BMN vacuum correlator, for folded strings on $S^5$ and for two-particle states. Our prescription for two…
No-scale models arise in many compactifications of string theory and supergravity, the most prominent recent example being type IIB flux compactifications. Focussing on the case where the no-scale field is a single unstabilized volume modulus (radion), we analyse the general form of supergravity loop corrections that affect the no-scale structure of the Kaehler potential. These corrections contribute to the 4d scalar potential of the radion in a way that is similar to the Casimir effect. We discuss the interplay of this loop effect with string-theoretic alpha' corrections and its possible role…
The leading quantum correction to Einstein-Hilbert Hamiltonian coming from large volume vacuum isotropic loop quantum cosmology, is independent of quantization ambiguity parameters. It is shown here that this correction can be viewed as finite volume gravitational Casimir energy due to one-loop `graviton' contributions. In vacuum case sub-leading quantum corrections and in non-vacuum case even leading quantum correction depend on ambiguity parameters. It may be recalled that these are in fact analogous features of perturbative quantum gravity where it is well-known that pure gravity (on-shell)…
Together with holonomy corrections, inverse volume terms should be taken into account when studying the primordial universe in loop quantum cosmology. We investigate how the tensor power spectrum is modified with respect to the standard general relativistic prediction by those semiclassical corrections. Depending on the values of the free parameters of the model, it is shown that the spectrum can exhibit a very large deviation from its usual shape, in particular with a very red slope and a strong running in the infrared limit.
In large volume models reheating is driven by the decays of the volume modulus to the visible sector, while the decays to its axion partners result in dark radiation. In this article we discuss the impact of loop corrections on the only model-independent visible decay channel: the decay into Higgs pairs via a Giudice-Masiero term. Including such radiative effects leads to a more precise determination of the relative fraction of dark radiation, since by contrast all loop corrections to the volume axion decay mode are Planck suppressed. Assuming an MSSM spectrum and that the Giudice-Masiero coup…
If the negative cosmological constant is treated as a dynamical pressure and if the volume be its thermodynamically conjugate variable then the gravitational mass can be expressed as the total gravitational enthalpy rather than the energy. Under these circumstances, a new phenomena emerges in the context of extended phase space thermodynamics. We \emph{examine} here these features for recently discovered Van-der-Waal (VDW) black hole (BH) \cite{mann15} which is analogous to the VDW fluid. We show that the thermodynamic volume is \emph{greater} than the naive geometric volume. We also show that…
In this paper we study the non-Gaussian features of the primordial fluctuations in loop quantum cosmology with the inverse volume corrections. The detailed analysis is performed in the single field slow-roll inflationary models. However, our results reflect the universal characteristics of bispectrum in loop quantum cosmology. The main corrections to the scalar bispectrum come from two aspects: one is the modifications to the standard Bunch-Davies vacuum, the other is the corrections to the background dependent variables, such as slow-roll parameters. Our calculations show that the loop quantu…
We first derive the primordial power spectra, spectral indices and runnings of both scalar and tensor perturbations of a flat inflationary universe to the second-order approximations of the slow-roll parameters, in the framework of loop quantum cosmology with the inverse-volume quantum corrections. This represents an extension of our previous work in which the parameter $σ$ was assumed to be an integer, where $σ$ characterizes the quantum corrections and in general can take any of values from the range $σ\in (0, 6]$. Restricting to the first-order approximations of the slow-roll parameters, we…
We make an extension to recent calculations of the probability density ρ(V) for the volume of the universe after inflation. Previous results have been accurate to leading order in the slow roll parameters ε=\dot{H}/H^2 and η=\ddotϕ/(\dotϕ H), and 1/N_c, where H is the Hubble parameter and N_c is the classical number of e-foldings. Here, we present a modification which captures effects of order εN_c, which amounts to letting the parameters of inflation H and \dotϕ depend on the value of the inflaton ϕ. The phase of slow roll eternal inflation can be defined as when the probability to have an in…
We compute the asymmetric and symmetric correlation functions of a four point amplitude of a gauge field, a scalar field and a closed string Ramond-Ramond (RR) for different non-vanishing BPS branes. All world volume, Taylor and pull-back couplings and their all order $α'$ corrections have also been explored. Due to various symmetry structures, different restricted BPS Bianchi identities have also been constructed. The prescription of exploring all the corrections of two closed string RR couplings in type IIB is given. We obtain the closed form of the entire S-matrix elements of two closed str…
We analyze the ground state of the open spin-1/2 isotropic quantum spin chain with a non-diagonal boundary term using a recently proposed Bethe ansatz solution. As the coefficient of the non-diagonal boundary term tends to zero, the Bethe roots split evenly into two sets: those that remain finite, and those that become infinite. We argue that the former satisfy conventional Bethe equations, while the latter satisfy a generalization of the Richardson-Gaudin equations. We derive an expression for the leading correction to the boundary energy in terms of the boundary parameters.
