Set-theoretic solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation form a meeting-ground of mathematical physics, algebra and combinatorics. Such a solution consists of a set $X$ and a function r:X x X --> X x X which satisfies the braid relation.
We examine solutions here mainly from the point of view of finite permutation groups: a solution gives rise to a map from $X$ to the symmetric group $Sym(X)$ on $X$ satisfying certain conditions.
Our results include many new constructions based on strong twisted union and wreath product, with an investigation of retracts and the multipermutation level and the solvable length of the groups defined by the solutions and new results about decompositions and factorisations of the groups defined by invariant subsets of the solution.
We prove that a finite non-degenerate involutive set-theoretic solution (X,r) of the Yang-Baxter equation is a multipermutation solution if and only if its structure group G(X,r) admits a left ordering or equivalently it is poly-(infinite cyclic).
We study involutive set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation of multipermutation level 2. These solutions happen to fall into two classes -- distributive ones and non-distributive ones. The distributive ones can be effectively constructed using a set of abelian groups and a matrix of constants. Using this construction, we enumerate all distributive involutive solutions up to size 14. The non-distributive solutions can be also easily constructed, using a distributive solution and a permutation.
Studying solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation through skew braces, with an application to indecomposable involutive solutions with abelian permutation group
A new family of non-degenerate involutive set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation is constructed. All these solutions are strong twisted unions of multipermutation solutions of multipermutation level at most two. A large subfamily consists of irretractable and square-free solutions. This subfamily includes a recent example of Vendramin, who first gave a counterexample to Gateva-Ivanova's Strong Conjecture. We extend our recent work on set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter or braid relations with new results about their automorphism groups, strong twisted unions of solutions and multipermutation solutions. We introduce and study graphs of solutions and use our graphical methods for the computation of solutions of finite order and their automorphisms. Results include a detailed study of solutions of multipermutation level 2.
We involve simultaneously the theory of matched pairs of groups and the theory of braces to study set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation (YBE). We show the intimate relation between the notions of a symmetric group (a braided involutive group) and a left brace, and find new results on symmetric groups of finite multipermutation level and the corresponding braces. We introduce a new invariant of a symmetric group $(G,r)$, \emph{the derived chain of ideals of} $G$, which gives a precise information about the recursive process of retraction of $G$. Moreover, we study one-generator left braces of multipermutation level 2.
We investigate a class of non-involutive solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation which generalize self-distributive (derived) solutions. In particular, we study generalized multipermutation solutions in this class. We show that the Yang-Baxter (permutation) groups of such solutions are nilpotent. We formulate the results in the language of biracks.
It is shown that square free set theoretic involutive non-degenerate solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation whose associated permutation group (referred to as an involutive Yang-Baxter group) is abelian are retractable in the sense of Etingof, Schedler and Soloviev. This solves a problem of Gateva-Ivanova in the case of abelian IYB groups. We study finite set-theoretic solutions $(X,r)$ of the Yang-Baxter equation of square-free multipermutation type. We show that each such solution over $\C$ with multipermutation level two can be put in diagonal form with the associated Yang-Baxter algebra $\Acal(\C,X,r)$ having a $q$-commutation form of relations determined by complex phase factors. These complex factors are roots of unity and all roots of a prescribed form appear as determined by the representation theory of finite abelian group $\Gcal$ of left actions on $X$. This paper explores the structure groups $G_{(X,r)}$ of finite non-degenerate set-theoretic solutions $(X,r)$ to the Yang-Baxter equation. Namely, we construct a finite quotient $\overline{G}_{(X,r)}$ of $G_{(X,r)}$, generalizing the Coxeter-like groups introduced by Dehornoy for involutive solutions. This yields a finitary setting for testing injectivity: if $X$ injects into $G_{(X,r)}$, then it also injects into $\overline{G}_{(X,r)}$. We establish a correspondence between the invariant subsets of a non-degenerate symmetric set-theoretical solution of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation and the parabolic subgroups of its structure group, equipped with its canonical Garside structure. Moreover, we introduce the notion of a foldable solution, which extends the one of a decomposable solution.
Indecomposable involutive non-degenerate set-theoretic solutions $(X,r)$ of the Yang-Baxter equation of cardinality $p_1\cdots p_n$, for different prime numbers $p_1,\ldots, p_n$, are studied. It is proved that they are multipermutation solutions of level $\leq n$. In particular, there is no simple solution of a non-prime square-free cardinality. This solves a problem stated in [F. Cedó, J. Okniński, Constructing finite simple solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation, Adv. An $n\times n$ matrix $M=[m_{ij}]$ with $m_{ij}\in U_n=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ will be called a cycle matrix if $(U_n,\cdot)$ is a cycle set, where $i\cdot j=m_{ij}$. We study these matrices in this article. Using these matrices, we give some recipes to construct solutions, which include the multipermutation level $2$ solutions. As an application of these, we construct a multi-permutation solution of level $r$ for all $r\geq 1$. Our method gives alternate proof that the class of permutation groups of solutions contains all finite abelian groups.
Using Bieberbach groups we study multipermutation involutive solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. We use a linear representation of the structure group of an involutive solution to study the unique product property in such groups. An algorithm to find subgroups of a Bieberbach group isomorphic to the Promislow subgroup is introduced and then used in the case of structure group of involutive solutions. It is shown that a Yang-Baxter system can be constructed from any entwining structure. It is also shown that, conversely, Yang-Baxter systems of certain type lead to entwining structures. Examples of Yang-Baxter systems associated to entwining structures are given, and a Yang-Baxter operator of Hecke type is defined for any bijective entwining map.
The most common geometric interpretation of the Yang-Baxter equation is by braids, knots and relevant Reidemeister moves. So far, cubes were used for connections with the third Reidemeister move only. We will show that there are higher-dimensional cube complexes solving the $D$-state Yang-Baxter equation for arbitrarily large $D$. More precisely, we introduce explicit constructions of cube complexes covered by products of $n$ trees and show that these cube complexes lead to new solutions of the Yang-Baxter equations.
Yang-Baxter operators from algebra structures appeared for the first time in [16], [17] and [8]. Later, Yang-Baxter systems from entwining structures were constructed in [5]. In this paper we show that an algebra factorisation can be constructed from a Yang-Baxter system.
We introduce the concept of {sigma, tau}-Rota-Baxter operator, as a twisted version of a Rota-Baxter operator of weight zero. We show how to obtain a certain {sigma, tau}-Rota-Baxter operator from a solution of the associative (Bi)Hom-Yang-Baxter equation, and, in a compatible way, a Hom-pre-Lie algebra from an infinitesimal Hom-bialgebra.
A dynamical Yang-Baxter map, introduced by Shibukawa, is a solution of the set-theoretical analogue of the dynamical Yang-Baxter equation. In this paper, we initiate a quiver-theoretical approach for the study of dynamical Yang-Baxter maps. Our key observation is that the category of dynamical sets over a set $Λ$, introduced by Shibukawa to establish a categorical framework to deal with dynamical Yang-Baxter maps, can be embedded into the category of quivers with vertices $Λ$. An explicit quantization is given of certain skew-symmetric solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter, yielding a family of $R$-matrices which generalize to higher dimensions the Jordanian $R$-matrices. Three different approaches to their construction are given: as twists of degenerations of the Shibukawa-Ueno Yang-Baxter operators on meromorphic functions; as boundary solutions of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation; via a vertex-IRF transformation from solutions to the dynamical Yang-Baxter equation.
Generalized Yang-Baxter matrices sometimes give rise to braid group representations. We identify the exact images of some qubit representations of the braid groups from generalized Yang-Baxter matrices obtained from anyons in the metaplectic modular categories.
An s-set is an algebraic generalization of the regular s-manifold introduced by Kowalski, one of the generalized symmetric spaces in differential geometry. We prove that suitable s-sets give birth to dynamical Yang-Baxter maps, set-theoretic solutions to a version of the quantum dynamical Yang-Baxter equation. As an application, Hopf algebroids and rigid tensor categories are constructed by means of these dynamical Yang-Baxter maps.
For any algebra two families of coloured Yang-Baxter operators are constructed, thus producing solutions to the two-parameter quantum Yang-Baxter equation. An open problem about a system of functional equations is stated. The matrix forms of these operators for two and three dimensional algebras are computed. A FRT bialgebra for one of these families is presented. Solutions for the one-parameter quantum Yang-Baxter equation are derived and a Yang-Baxter system constructed.
It is shown that for a certain class of Yang-Baxter maps (or set-theoretical solutions to the quantum Yang-Baxter equation) the Lax representation can be derived straight from the map itself. A similar phenomenon for 3D consistent equations on quad-graphs has been recently discovered by A. Bobenko and one of the authors, and by F. Nijhoff.
Sufficient conditions for an invertible two-tensor $F$ to relate two solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation via the transformation $R\to F^{-1}_{21} R F$ are formulated. Those conditions include relations arising from twisting of certain quasitriangular bialgebras.
In this paper, the relations between the Yang-Baxter equation and affine actions are explored in detail. In particular, we classify solutions of the Yang-Baxter equations in two ways: (i) by their associated affine actions of their structure groups on their derived structure groups, and (ii) by the C*-dynamical systems obtained from their associated affine actions. On the way to our main results, several other useful results are also obtained.

Notions of an (H, X)-bialgebroid and of its dynamical representation are proposed. The dynamical representations of each (H, X)-bialgebroid form a tensor category. Every dynamical Yang-Baxter map R(lambda) satisfying suitable conditions, a generalization of the set-theoretical solution to the quantum Yang-Baxter equation, gives birth to an (H, X)-bialgebroid A_R. The categories of L-operators for R(lambda) and of dynamical representations of A_R are isomorphic as tensor categories.

The quantum Yang-Baxter equation admits generalisations to systems of Yang-Baxter type equations called Yang-Baxter systems. The (G, θ)-Lie algebras are structures which unify the Lie algebras and Lie superalgebras. We use them to produce solutions for the quantum Yang-Baxter equation. The constant and the spectral-parameter Yang-Baxter equations and Yang-Baxter systems are also studied.
We show that for each semi-Riemannian locally symmetric space the curvature tensor gives rise to a rational solution $r$ of the classical Yang-Baxter equation with spectral parameter. For several Riemannian globally symmetric spaces $M$ such as real, complex and quaternionic Grassmann manifolds we explicitly compute solutions $R$ of the quantum Yang Baxter equations (represented in the tangent spaces of $M$) which generalize the quantum $R$-matrix found by Zamolodchikov and Zamolodchikov in 1979.

In this paper a class of new quantum groups is presented: deformed Yangians. They arise from rational solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter equation of the form $c_2 /u + const$ . The universal quantum $R$-matrix for a deformed Yangian is described. Its image in finite-dimensional representaions of the Yangian gives new matrix rational solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation (YBE).

We extend the Yang-Baxter cocycle invariants for virtual knots by augmenting Yang-Baxter 2-cocycles with cocycles from a cohomology theory associated to a virtual biquandle structure. These invariants coincide with the classical Yang-Baxter cocycle invariants for classical knots but provide extra information about virtual knots and links. In particular, they provide a method for detecting non-classicality of virtual knots and links.
The hierarchy of commuting maps related to a set-theoretical solution of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation (Yang-Baxter map) is introduced. They can be considered as dynamical analogues of the monodromy and/or transfer-matrices. The general scheme of producing Yang-Baxter maps based on matrix factorisation is discussed in the context of the integrability problem for the corresponding dynamical systems. In this paper, we initiate the study of the interplay between $k$-graphs and the Yang-Baxter equation. For this, we provide two very different perspectives. One one hand, we show that the set of all set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation is a special class of single-vertex $k$-graphs. As a consequence, we construct an infinite family of large solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation from an arbitrarily given one. We consider the modified (or twisted) Yang-Baxter equations for the $SL_{q}(N)$ groups and $SL_{q}(N|M)$ supergroups. The general solutions for these equations are presented in the case of the linear quantum (super)groups. The introduction of spectral parameters in the twisted Yang-Baxter equation and its solutions are also discussed.
In this paper, we determine all unitary solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation in dimension four. Quantum computation motivates this study. This set of solutions will assist in clarifying the relationship between quantum entanglement and topological entanglement. By means of left quasigroups L=(L, .) and ternary systems, we construct dynamical Yang-Baxter maps associated with L, L, and (.) satisfying an invariance condition that the binary operation (.) of the left quasigroup L defines. Conversely, this construction characterize such dynamical Yang-Baxter maps. The unitary condition of the dynamical Yang-Baxter map is discussed.
