We compute the current exchanges between triplets of higher spin fields which describe reducible representations of the Poincare group. Through this computation we can extract the propagator of the reducible higher spin fields which compose the triplet. We show how to decompose the triplet fields into irreducible HS fields which obey Fronsdal equations, and how to compute the current-current interaction for the cubic couplings which appear in ArXiv:0708.1399 [hep-th] using the decomposition into irreducible modes. We compare this result with the same computation using a gauge fixed (Feynman) version of the triplet Lagrangian which allows us to write very simple HS propagators for the triplet fields.
We construct, in D=3,4,6 and 10 space-time dimensions, supersymmetric Lagrangians for free massless higher spin fields which belong to reducible representations of the Poincare group. The fermionic part of these models consists of spinor-tensor fields which are totally symmetrical with respect to their tensor indices, while the bosonic part contains totally symmetric tensor fields as well as the simplest mixed-symmetry fields. A peculiar feature of these models is that they describe higher- and lower-spin supermultiplets in different dimensions in a uniform way.
We consider the frame-like formulation of reducible sets of totally symmetric bosonic and fermionic higher-spin fields in flat and AdS backgrounds of any dimension, that correspond to so-called higher-spin triplets resulting from the string-inspired BRST approach. The explicit relationship of the fields of higher-spin triplets to the higher-spin vielbeins and connections is found. The gauge invariant actions are constructed including, in particular, the reducible (i.e. triplet) higher-spin fermion case in AdS_D space.
We study a supergauge transformation of a complex superfield which generates a chiral superfield in two-dimensional ${\cal N}=(2,2)$ theory. This complex superfield is referred to as the prepotential of the chiral superfield. Since there exist redundant component fields in the prepotential, we remove some of them by a gauge-fixing condition. This situation is parallel to that of a vector superfield. In order to obtain a suitable configuration of the GLSM for the exotic five-brane which gives rise to a nongeometric background, we impose a relatively relaxed gauge-fixing condition. It turns out …
We consider the problem of covariant gauge-fixing in the most general setting of the field-antifield formalism, where the action W and the gauge-fixing part X enter symmetrically and both satisfy the Quantum Master Equation. Analogous to the gauge-generating algebra of the action W, we analyze the possibility of having a reducible gauge-fixing algebra of X. We treat a reducible gauge-fixing algebra of the so-called first-stage in full detail and generalize to arbitrary stages. The associated "square root" measure contributions are worked out from first principles, with or without the presence …
The rules of local superfield Lagrangian quantization in reducible non-Abelian hypergauge functions are formulated for an arbitrary gauge theory. The generating functionals of standard and vertex Green's functions which depend on the Grassmann variable $η$ via super(anti)fields and sources are constructed. The difference between the local quantum and the gauge fixing actions determines an almost Hamiltonian system such that translations with respect to $η$ along the solutions of this system define the superfield BRST transformations. The Ward identities are derived and the gauge independence o…
We study the higher-derivative equations for gauge potentials of arbitrary mixed-symmetry type obtained by setting to zero the divergences of the corresponding curvature tensors. We show that they propagate the same reducible multiplets as the Maxwell-like second-order equations for gauge fields subject to constrained gauge transformations. As an additional output of our analysis, we provide a streamlined presentation of the Ricci-like case, where the traces of the same curvature tensors are set to zero, and we present a simple algebraic evaluation of the particle content associated with the L…
We show that it is possible to formulate the most general first-class gauge algebra of the operator formalism by only using BRST-invariant constraints. In particular, we extend a previous construction for irreducible gauge algebras to the reducible case. The gauge algebra induces two nilpotent, Grassmann-odd, mutually anticommuting BRST operators that bear structural similarities with BRST/anti-BRST theories but with shifted ghost number assignments. In both cases we show how the extended BRST algebra can be encoded into an operator master equation. A unitarizing Hamiltonian that respects the …
The kinetic action of the N=2 Yang-Mills vector multiplet can be written in projective N=2 superspace using projective multiplets. It is possible to perform a simple N=2 gauge fixing, which translated to N=1 component language makes the kinetic terms of gauge potentials invertible. After coupling the Yang-Mills multiplet to unconstrained sources it is very simple to integrate out the gauge fixed vector multiplet from the path integral of the free theory and obtain the N=2 propagator. Its reduction to N=1 components agrees with the propagators of the gauge fixed N=1 component superfields. The c…
We propose a general procedure for iterative inclusion of Stueckelberg fields to convert the theory into gauge system being equivalent to the original one. In so doing, we admit reducibility of the Stueckelberg gauge symmetry. In this case, no pairing exists between Stueckelberg fields and gauge parameters, unlike the irreducible Stueckelberg symmetry. The general procedure is exemplified by the case of Proca model, with the third order involutive closure chosen as the starting point. In this case, the set of Stueckelberg fields includes, besides the scalar, also the second rank antisymmetric …
We propose a new off-shell formulation for the massless ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric multiplet of integer superspin $s$ in four dimensions, where $s =2,3,\dots$ (the $s=1$ case corresponds to the gravitino multiplet). Its gauge freedom matches that of the superconformal superspin-$s$ multiplet described in arXiv:1701.00682. The gauge-invariant action involves two compensating multiplets in addition to the superconformal superspin-$s$ multiplet. Upon imposing a partial gauge fixing, this action reduces to the one describing the so-called longitudinal formulation for the massless superspin-$s$ mu…
In this thesis we give an overview of the antifield formalism and show how it must be used to quantise arbitrary gauge theories. The formalism is further developed and illustrated in several examples, including Yang-Mills theory, chiral $W_3$ and $W_{2,5/2}$ gravity, strings in curved backgrounds and topological field theories. All these models are characterised by their gauge algebra, which can be open, reducible, or even infinitly reducible. We show in detail how to perform the gauge fixing and how to compute the anomalies using Pauli-Villars regularisation and the heat kernel method. Finall…
We elaborate on a new model of the higher-spin (HS) particle which makes manifest the classical equivalence of the HS particle of the unfolded formulation and the HS particle model with a bosonic counterpart of supersymmetry. Both these models emerge as two different gauges of the new master system. Physical states of the master model are massless HS multiplets described by complex HS fields which carry an extra U(1) charge q. The latter fully characterizes the given multiplet by fixing the minimal helicity as q/2. We construct the twistorial formulation of the master model and discuss symmetr…
We propose a "master" higher-spin (HS) particle system. The particle model relevant to the unfolded formulation of HS theory, as well as the HS particle model with a bosonic counterpart of supersymmetry, follow from the master model as its two different gauges. Quantization of the master system gives rise to a new form of the massless HS equations in an extended space involving, besides extra spinorial coordinates, also a complex scalar one. As solutions to these equations we recover the massless HS multiplet with fields of all integer and half-integer helicities, and obtain new multiplets wit…
We combine a recent construction of a BRST-invariant, nonlinear massive gauge fixing with the background field formalism. The resulting generating functional preserves background-field invariance as well as BRST invariance of the quantum field manifestly. The construction features BRST-invariant mass parameters for the quantum gauge and ghost fields. The formalism employs a background Nakanishi-Lautrup field which is part of the nonlinear gauge-fixing sector and thus should not affect observables. We verify this expectation by computing the one-loop effective action and the corresponding beta …
In spite of its simplicity and beauty, the Mathai-Quillen formulation of cohomological topological quantum field theory with gauge symmetry suffers two basic problems: $i$) the existence of reducible field configurations on which the action of the gauge group is not free and $ii$) the Gribov ambiguity associated with gauge fixing, i. e. the lack of global definition on the space of gauge orbits of gauge fixed functional integrals. In this paper, we show that such problems are in fact related and we propose a general completely geometrical recipe for their treatment. The space of field configur…
Spin-5/2 gauge fields are quantized in an irreducible way within both the BRST and BRST-anti-BRST manners. To this end, we transform the reducible generating set into an irreducible one, such that the physical observables corresponding to these two formulations coincide. The gauge-fixing procedure emphasizes on the one hand the differences among our procedure and the results obtained in the literature, and on the other hand the equivalence between our BRST and BRST-anti-BRST approaches.
In three dimensions, every known N=4 supermultiplet has an off-shell completion. However, there is no off-shell N=4 formulation for the known extended superconformal Chern-Simons (CS) theories with eight and more supercharges. To achieve a better understanding of this issue, we provide N=4 superfield realisations for the equations of motion which correspond to various N=4 and N=6 superconformal CS theories, including the Gaiotto-Witten theory and the ABJM theory. These superfield realisations demonstrate that the superconformal CS theories with N>3 (except for the Gaiotto-Witten theory) requir…
A supersymmetric gauge invariant action is constructed over any 4-dimensional Riemannian manifold describing Witten's theory of 4-monopoles. The topological supersymmetric algebra closes off-shell. The multiplets include the auxiliary fields and the Wess-Zumino fields in an unusual way, arising naturally from BRST gauge fixing. A new canonical approach over Riemann manifolds is followed, using a Morse function as an euclidean time and taking into account the BRST boundary conditions that come from the BFV formulation. This allows a construction of the effective action starting from gauge princ…
The superspace formulation of N=1 conformal supergravity in four dimensions is demonstrated to be equivalent to the conventional component field approach based on the superconformal tensor calculus. The detailed correspondence between two approaches is explicitly given for various quantities; superconformal gauge fields, curvatures and curvature constraints, general conformal multiplets and their transformation laws, and so on. In particular, we carefully analyze the curvature constraints leading to the superconformal algebra and also the superconformal gauge fixing leading to Poincare supergr…
The conformal compensator formalism is a convenient and versatile representation of supergravity (SUGRA) obtained by gauge fixing conformal SUGRA. Unfortunately, practical calculations often require cumbersome manipulations of component field terms involving the full gravity multiplet. In this paper, we derive an alternative gauge fixing for conformal SUGRA which decouples these gravity complications from SUGRA computations. This yields a simplified tree-level action for the matter fields in SUGRA which can be expressed compactly in terms of superfields and a modified conformal compensator. Ph…
We present a superconformal master action for a class of supergravity models with one arbitrary function defining the Jordan frame. It leads to a gauge-invariant action for a real vector multiplet, which upon gauge fixing describes a massive vector multiplet, or to a dual formulation with a linear multiplet and a massive tensor field. In both cases the models have one real scalar, the inflaton, naturally suited for single-field inflation. Vectors and tensors required by supersymmetry to complement a single real scalar do not acquire vev's during inflation, so there is no need to stabilize the …
The Ward identities are the relations which the complete Green functions of quantum fields satisfy if an original classical Lagrangian system is degenerate. A generic degenerate Lagrangian system of even and odd fields is considered. It is characterized by a hierarchy of reducible Noether identities and gauge supersymmetries parameterized by antifields and ghosts, respectively. In the framework of the BV quantization procedure, an original degenerate Lagrangian is extended to ghosts and antifields in order to satisfy the master equation. Replacing antifields with gauge fixing terms, one comes …
Higher spin fields in four dimensions, and more generally conformal fields in arbitrary dimensions, can be described by spinning particle models with a gauged SO(N) extended supergravity on the worldline. We consider here the one-loop quantization of these models by studying the corresponding partition function on the one-dimensional torus. After gauge fixing the supergravity multiplet, the partition function reduces to an integral over the corresponding moduli space which is computed using orthogonal polynomial techniques. We obtain a compact formula which gives the number of physical degrees…
We develop the BRST approach to Lagrangian formulation for all massless half-integer higher spin fields on an arbitrary dimensional flat space. General procedure of Lagrangian construction describing the dynamics of fermionic field with any spin is given. It is shown that in fermionic case the higher spin field model is a reducible gauge theory and the order of reducibility grows with the value of spin. No off-shell constraints on the fields and the gauge parameters are used. We prove that in four dimensions after partial gauge fixing the Lagrangian obtained can be transformed to Fang-Fronsdal…
On the basis of recent results extending non-trivially the Poincaré symmetry, we investigate the properties of bosonic multiplets including $2-$form gauge fields. Invariant free Lagrangians are explicitly built which involve possibly $3-$ and $4-$form fields. We also study in detail the interplay between this symmetry and a U(1) gauge symmetry, and in particular the implications of the automatic gauge-fixing of the latter associated to a residual gauge invariance, as well as the absence of self-interaction terms.
We describe a new realization of both global and local supersymmetry acting in spaces of commuting and anticommuting differential forms. Unlike the standard supersymmetry, it has Lorentz scalar transformation parameters. It is related but is not reducible to standard supersymmetry. Reformulation of the Standard Model with the new supersymmetry, called scalar supersymmetry, can be achieved with the particle content of the SM. BRST symmetry is extended to include scalar supersymmetry multiplets. Linear realization of scalar supersymmetry with free fields or with fields interacting with backgroun…
We consider two-dimensional chiral, first-order conformal field theories governing maps from the Riemann sphere to the projective light cone inside Minkowski space -- the natural setting for describing conformal field theories in two fewer dimensions. These theories have a SL(2) algebra of local bosonic constraints which can be supplemented by additional fermionic constraints depending on the matter content of the theory. By computing the BRST charge associated with gauge fixing these constraints, we find anomalies which vanish for specific target space dimensions. These critical dimensions co…
Two-dimensional supergravity theory is quantized as an anomalous gauge theory. In the Batalin-Fradkin (BF) formalism, the anomaly-canceling super-Liouville fields are introduced to identify the original second-class constrained system with a gauge-fixed version of a first-class system. The BFV-BRST quantization applies to formulate the theory in the most general class of gauges. A local effective action constructed in the configuration space contains two super-Liouville actions; one is a noncovariant but local functional written only in terms of 2D supergravity fields, and the other contains t…
Using the worldline formalism of the Dirac field with a non-Abelian gauge symmetry we show how to describe the matter field transforming in an arbitrary representation of the gauge group. Colour degrees of freedom are carried on the worldline by auxiliary fields, responsible for providing path ordering and the Wilson-loop coupling. The Hilbert space of these fields is reducible but we make use of recent work in order to project onto a single, arbitrary, irreducible representation. By functionally quantising the resulting theory we show that this procedure correctly generates the Wilson-loop in…
Boundaries in gauge theories are a delicate issue. Arbitrary boundary choices enter the calculation of charges via Noether's second theorem, obstructing the assignment of unambiguous physical charges to local gauge symmetries. Replacing the arbitrary boundary choice with new degrees of freedom suggests itself. But, concretely, such boundary degrees of freedom are spurious---i.e. they are not part of the original field content of the theory---and have to disappear upon gluing. How should we fit them into what we know about field-theory? We resolve these issues in a unified and geometric manner,…
A one-loop effective potential of the Higgs field on the Schwarzschild background is derived in the framework of a toy model: a SO(N) scalar multiplet interacting with the gauge fields, the SO(N) gauge symmetry being broken by the Higgs mechanism. As expected, the potential depends on the space point and results in a mass shift of all massive particles near a black hole. It is shown that the obtained potential depends on the space point through the metric component $g_{00}$ in the adapted coordinates and has the same form for an arbitrary static, spherically symmetric background. Some properti…
Gauge-invariant descriptions for a free bosonic scalar field of continuous spin in a $d$-dimensional Minkowski space-time using a metric-like formulation are constructed on the basis of a constrained BRST-BFV approach we propose. The resulting BRST-BFV equations of motion for a scalar field augmented by ghost operators contains different sets of auxiliary fields, depending on the manner of a partial gauge-fixing and a resolution of some of the equations of motion for a BRST-unfolded first-stage reducible gauge theory. To achieve an equivalence of the resulting BRST-unfolded constrained equatio…
