The novel contribution of this paper relies in the proposal of a fully implicit numerical method designed for nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations, in its convergence/stability analysis, and in the study of the related computational cost. In fact, due to the nonlinear nature of the underlying mathematical model, the use of a fixed point scheme is required and every step implies the solution of large, locally structured, linear systems. A special effort is devoted to the spectral analysis of the relevant matrices and to the design of appropriate iterative or multi-iterative solvers, with special attention to preconditioned Krylov methods and to multigrid procedures: in particular we investigate the mutual benefit of combining in various ways suitable preconditioners with V-cycle algorithms. Numerical experiments in one and two spatial dimensions for the validation of our multi-facet analysis complement this contribution.
We construct an algebraic multigrid (AMG) based preconditioner for the reduced Hessian of a linear-quadratic optimization problem constrained by an elliptic partial differential equation. While the preconditioner generalizes a geometric multigrid preconditioner introduced in earlier works, its construction relies entirely on a standard AMG infrastructure built for solving the forward elliptic equation, thus allowing for it to be implemented using a variety of AMG methods and standard packages. Our analysis establishes a clear connection between the quality of the preconditioner and the AMG met…
The paper focuses on developing and studying efficient block preconditioners based on classical algebraic multigrid for the large-scale sparse linear systems arising from the fully coupled and implicitly cell-centered finite volume discretization of multi-group radiation diffusion equations, whose coefficient matrices can be rearranged into the $(G+2)\times(G+2)$ block form, where $G$ is the number of energy groups. The preconditioning techniques are based on the monolithic classical algebraic multigrid method, physical-variable based coarsening two-level algorithm and two types of block Schur…
In this note we present a multigrid preconditioning method for solving quadratic optimization problems constrained by a fractional diffusion equation. Multigrid methods within the all-at-once approach to solve the first order-order optimality Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) systems are widely popular, but their development have relied on the underlying systems being sparse. On the other hand, for most discretizations, the matrix representation of fractional operators is expected to be dense. We develop a preconditioning strategy for our problem based on a reduced approach, namely we eliminate the sta…
Numerical simulation of incompressible viscous flow, in particular in three space dimensions, continues to remain a challenging task. Space-time finite element methods feature the natural construction of higher order discretization schemes. They offer the potential to achieve accurate results on computationally feasible grids. Linearizing the resulting algebraic problems by Newton's method yields linear systems with block matrices built of $(k+1)\times (k+1)$ saddle point systems, where $k$ denotes the polynomial order of the variational time discretization. We demonstrate numerically the effi…
The discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin (DPG) methodology of Demkowicz and Gopalakrishnan [15,17] guarantees the optimality of the solution in an energy norm, and provides several features facilitating adaptive schemes. A key question that has not yet been answered in general - though there are some results for Poisson, e.g. - is how best to precondition the DPG system matrix, so that iterative solvers may be used to allow solution of large-scale problems. In this paper, we detail a strategy for preconditioning the DPG system matrix using geometric multigrid which we have implemented as part of Came…
Iterative solvers preconditioned with algebraic multigrid have been devised as an optimal technology to speed up the response of large sparse linear systems. In this work, this technique was implemented in the framework of the dual delineation approach. This involves a single groundwater flow solve and a pure advective transport solve with different right-hand sides. The new solver was compared with traditional preconditioned iterative methods and direct sparse solvers on several two- and three-dimensional benchmark problems spanning homogeneous and heterogeneous formations. For the groundwate…
We present augmented Lagrangian Schur complement preconditioners and robust multigrid methods for incompressible Stokes problems with extreme viscosity variations. Such Stokes systems arise, for instance, upon linearization of nonlinear viscous flow problems, and they can have severely inhomogeneous and anisotropic coefficients. Using an augmented Lagrangian formulation for the incompressibility constraint makes the Schur complement easier to approximate, but results in a nearly singular (1,1)-block in the Stokes system. We present eigenvalue estimates for the quality of the Schur complement a…

Constructing fast numerical solvers for partial differential equations (PDEs) is crucial for many scientific disciplines. A leading technique for solving large-scale PDEs is using multigrid methods. At the core of a multigrid solver is the prolongation matrix, which relates between different scales of the problem. This matrix is strongly problem-dependent, and its optimal construction is critical to the efficiency of the solver. In practice, however, devising multigrid algorithms for new problems often poses formidable challenges. In this paper we propose a framework for learning multigrid sol…
Many subsurface engineering applications involve tight-coupling between fluid flow, solid deformation, fracturing, and similar processes. To better understand the complex interplay of different governing equations, and therefore design efficient and safe operations, numerical simulations are widely used. Given the relatively long time-scales of interest, fully-implicit time-stepping schemes are often necessary to avoid time-step stability restrictions. A major computational bottleneck for these methods, however, is the linear solver. These systems are extremely large and ill-conditioned. Becau…
We investigate three directions to further improve the highly efficient Space-Time Multigrid algorithm with block-Jacobi smoother introduced in [GanNeu16]. First, we derive an analytical expression for the optimal smoothing parameter in the case of a full space-time coarsening strategy; second, we propose a new and efficient direct coarsening strategy which simplifies the code by preventing changes of coarsening regimes; and third, we also optimize the entire two cycle to investigate if further efficiency gains are possible. Especially, we show that our new coarsening strategy leads to a signi…
The multigrid algorithm is an efficient numerical method for solving a variety of elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs). The method damps errors at progressively finer grid scales, resulting in faster convergence compared to standard iterative methods such as Gauss-Seidel. The prolongation, or coarse-to-fine interpolation operator within the multigrid algorithm lends itself to a data-driven treatment with ML super resolution, commonly used to increase the resolution of images. We (i) propose the novel integration of a super resolution generative adversarial network (GAN) model with th…

This paper studies numerical solutions for parameterized partial differential equations (P-PDEs) with deep learning (DL). P-PDEs arise in many important application areas and the computational cost using traditional numerical schemes can be exorbitant, especially when the parameters fall into a particular range and the underlying PDE is required to be solved with high accuracy. Recently, solving PDEs with DL has become an emerging field. Existing works demonstrate great potentials of the DL based approach in speeding up numerical solutions of PDEs. However, there is still limited research on t…
We propose an adaptive multigrid preconditioning technology for solving linear systems arising from Discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin (DPG) discretizations. Unlike standard multigrid techniques, this preconditioner involves only trace spaces defined on the mesh skeleton, and it is suitable for adaptive hp-meshes. The key point of the construction is the integration of the iterative solver with a fully automatic and reliable mesh refinement process provided by the DPG technology. The efficacy of the solution technique is showcased with numerous examples of linear acoustics and electromagnetic simul…

Algebraic multigrid (AMG) is often an effective solver for symmetric positive definite (SPD) linear systems resulting from the discretization of general elliptic PDEs, or the spatial discretization of parabolic PDEs. However, convergence theory and most variations of AMG rely on $A$ being SPD. Hyperbolic PDEs, which arise often in large-scale scientific simulations, remain a challenge for AMG, as well as other fast linear solvers, in part because the resulting linear systems are often highly nonsymmetric. Here, a novel convergence framework is developed for nonsymmetric, reduction-based AMG, a…

In this paper we analyze an optimization problem with limited observation governed by a convection--diffusion--reaction equation. Motivated by a Schur complement approach, we arrive at continuous norms that enable analysis of well-posedness and subsequent derivation of error analysis and a preconditioner that is robust with respect to the parameters of the problem. We provide conditions for inf-sup stable discretizations and present one such discretization for box domains with constant convection. We also provide a priori error estimates for this discretization. The preconditioner requires a f…
This paper introduces bootstrap multigrid methods for solving eigenvalue problems arising from the discretization of partial differential equations. Inspired by the full bootstrap algebraic multigrid (BAMG) setup algorithm that includes an AMG eigensolver, it is illustrated how the algorithm can be simplified for the case of a discretized partial differential equation (PDE), thereby developing a bootstrap geometric multigrid (BMG) approach. We illustrate numerically the efficacy of the BMG method for: (1) recovering eigenvalues having large multiplicity, (2) computing interior eigenvalues, and…
Time-parallel algorithms seek greater concurrency by decomposing the temporal domain of a Partial Differential Equation (PDE), providing possibilities for accelerating the computation of its solution. While parallelisation in time has allowed remarkable speed-ups in applications involving parabolic equations, its effectiveness in the hyperbolic framework remains debatable: growth of instabilities and slow convergence are both strong issues in this case, which often negate most of the advantages from time-parallelisation. Here, we focus on the Multigrid Reduction in Time (MGRIT) algorithm, inve…
