Let K be a totally real Galois number field. C. J. Hillar proved that if f in Q[x_1,...,x_n] is a sum of m squares in K[x_1,...,x_n], then f is a sum of N(m) squares in Q[x_1,...,x_n]. Modifying Hillar's proof, we improve the improve the bound given for N(m), the proof being constructive as well.
In totally real number fields, we characterize the rings of $S$-integers (obtained by inverting a rational integer $m$) such that all their totally positive elements are represented as a sum of squares. We further obtain partial answers to the question: when are all the totally positive algebraic integers that are divisible by $m$ represented as a sum of squares?
Given positive real numbers, we prove two inequalities involving their potential energy and their power sums. We also prove an inequality involving the energy and the discriminant and apply it to deduce a result on totally positive irreducible polynomials.
We obtain function field analogues of recent energy bounds on modular square roots and modular inversions and apply them to bounding some bilinear sums and to some questions regarding smooth and square-free polynomials in residue classes.
The conical zeta values are a generalization of the multiple zeta values which are defined by certain multiple sums over convex cones. In this paper, we present a relation between the values of the Dedekind zeta functions for totally real fields and the conical zeta values for certain algebraic cones. More precisely, we show that the values of the partial zeta functions for totally real fields can be expressed as a rational linear combination of the conical zeta values associated with certain algebraic cones up to the square root of the discriminant.
We study real quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$ such that, for a given rational integer $m$, all $m$-multiples of totally positive integers are sums of squares. We prove quite sharp necessary and sufficient conditions for this to happen. Further, we give a fast algorithm that solves this question for specific $m$, $D$ and we give complete results for $m \leq 5000$.
Analogously to primes in arithmetic progressions to large moduli, we can study primes that are totally split in extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ of high degree. Motivated by a question of Kowalski we focus on the extensions $\mathbb{Q}(E[d])$ obtained by adjoining the coordinates of $d$-torsion points of a non-CM elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$. A prime $p$ is said to be an outside prime of $E$ if it is totally split in $\mathbb{Q}(E[d])$ for some $d$ with $p<|\text{Gal}(\mathbb{Q}(E[d])/\mathbb{Q})| = d^{4-o(1)}$ (so that $p$ is not accounted for by the expected main term in the Chebotarev Density Th…
The problem of writing a totally positive element as a sum of squares has a long history in mathematics, going back to Bachet and Lagrange. While for some specific rings (like integers or polynomials over the rationals), there are known methods for decomposing an element into a sum of squares, in general, for many other important rings and fields, the problem is still widely open. In this paper, we present an explicit algorithm for decomposing an element of an arbitrary global field (either a number field or a global function field) into a sum of squares of minimal length.
We prove that the ring of integers in the totally real cubic subfield $K^{(49)}$ of the cyclotomic field $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_7)$ has Pythagoras number equal to $4$. This is the smallest possible value for a totally real number field of odd degree. Moreover, we determine which numbers are sums of integral squares in this field, and use this knowledge to construct a diagonal universal quadratic form in five variables.

Let $K$ be a cyclic totally real number field of odd degree over $\mathbb{Q}$ with odd class number, such that every totally positive unit is the square of a unit, and such that $2$ is inert in $K/\mathbb{Q}$. We define a family of number fields $\{K(p)\}_p$, depending on $K$ and indexed by the rational primes $p$ that split completely in $K/\mathbb{Q}$, such that $p$ is always ramified in $K(p)$ of degree $2$. Conditional on a standard conjecture on short character sums, the density of such rational primes $p$ that exhibit one of two possible ramified factorizations in $K(p)/\mathbb{Q}$ is st…
Let $π$ be a cuspidal automorphic representation of $\operatorname{GL}_2$ over a totally real number field $F$. Let $K$ be a totally imaginary quadratic extension of $F$. We estimate central values of the $\operatorname{GL}_2 \times \operatorname{GL}_2$ Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions associated to $π$ times representations induced from Hecke characters of $K$ which are ramified only at a given prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}$ of $F$. More specifically, we use spectral decompositions of shifted convolution sums and relations to Fourier-Whittaker coefficients of genuine and non-genuine metaplectic forms…
