The classical Weyl-von Neumann theorem states that for any self-adjoint operator $A$ in a separable Hilbert space $\mathfrak H$ there exists a (non-unique) Hilbert-Schmidt operator $C = C^*$ such that the perturbed operator $A+C$ has purely point spectrum. We are interesting whether this result remains valid for non-additive perturbations by considering self-adjoint extensions of a given densely defined symmetric operator $A$ in $\mathfrak H$ and fixing an extension $A_0 = A_0^*$. We show that for a wide class of symmetric operators the absolutely continuous parts of extensions $\widetilde A = {\widetilde A}^*$ and $A_0$ are unitarily equivalent provided that their resolvent difference is a compact operator. Namely, we show that this is true whenever the Weyl function $M(\cdot)$ of a pair $\{A,A_0\}$ admits bounded limits $M(t) := \wlim_{y\to+0}M(t+iy)$ for a.e. $t \in \mathbb{R}$. This result is applied to direct sums of symmetric operators and Sturm-Liouville operators with operator potentials.
Consider the minimal Sturm-Liouville operator $A = A_{\rm min}$ generated by the differential expression $\mathcal{A} := -\frac{d^2}{dt^2} + T$ in the Hilbert space $L^2(\mathbb{R}_+,\mathcal{H})$ where $T = T^*\ge 0$ in $\mathcal{H}$. We investigate the absolutely continuous parts of different self-adjoint realizations of $\mathcal{A}$. In particular, we show that Dirichlet and Neumann realizations, $A^D$ and $A^N$, are absolutely continuous and unitary equivalent to each other and to the absolutely continuous part of the Krein realization. Moreover, if $\infσ_{ess}(T) = \infσ(T) \ge 0$, then…
On an infinite, radial metric tree graph we consider the corresponding Laplacian equipped with self-adjoint vertex conditions from a large class including $δ$- and weighted $δ'$-couplings. Assuming the numbers of different edge lengths, branching numbers and different coupling conditions to be finite, we prove that the presence of absolutely continuous spectrum implies that the sequence of geometric data of the tree as well as the coupling conditions are eventually periodic. On the other hand, we provide examples of self-adjoint, non-periodic couplings which admit absolutely continuous spectru…
Given a self-adjoint operator H, a self-adjoint trace class operator V and a fixed Hilbert-Schmidt operator F with trivial kernel and co-kernel, using limiting absorption principle an explicit set of full Lebesgue measure is defined such that for all points of this set the wave and the scattering matrices can be defined and constructed unambiguously. Many well-known properties of the wave and scattering matrices and operators are proved, including the stationary formula for the scattering matrix. This new abstract scattering theory allows to prove that for any trace class perturbations of arbi…
We consider a class of self-adjoint extensions using the boundary triple technique. Assuming that the associated Weyl function has the special form $M(z)=\big(m(z)\Id-T\big) n(z)^{-1}$ with a bounded self-adjoint operator $T$ and scalar functions $m,n$ we show that there exists a class of boundary conditions such that the spectral problem for the associated self-adjoint extensions in gaps of a certain reference operator admits a unitary reduction to the spectral problem for $T$. As a motivating example we consider differential operators on equilateral metric graphs, and we describe a class of …
The spectral problem for self-adjoint extensions is studied using the machinery of boundary triplets. For a class of symmetric operators having Weyl functions of a special type we calculate explicitly the spectral projections in the form of operator-valued integrals. This allows one to give a constructive proof of the fact that, in certain intervals, the resulting self-adjoint extensions are unitarily equivalent to a certain parameterizing operator acting in a smaller space, and one is able to provide an explicit form the associated unitary transform. Applications to differential operators on …
Let $H$ be a complex Hilbert space and let ${\mathcal C}$ be a conjugacy class of finite rank self-adjoint operators on $H$ with respect to the action of unitary operators. We suppose that ${\mathcal C}$ is formed by operators of rank $k$ and for every $A\in {\mathcal C}$ the dimensions of distinct maximal eigenspaces are distinct. Under the assumption that $\dim H\ge 4k$ we establish that every bijective transformation $f$ of ${\mathcal C}$ preserving the commutativity in both directions is induced by a unitary or anti-unitary operator, i.e. there is a unitary or anti-unitary operator $U$ suc…
We establish a bijection between the self-adjoint extensions of the Laplace operator on a bounded regular domain and the unitary operators on the boundary. Each unitary encodes a specific relation between the boundary value of the function and its normal derivative. This bijection sets up a characterization of all physically admissible dynamics of a nonrelativistic quantum particle confined in a cavity. More- over, this correspondence is discussed also at the level of quadratic forms. Finally, the connection between this parametrization of the extensions and the classical one, in terms of boun…
We consider unitary analogs of $d-$dimensional Anderson models on $l^2(\Z^d)$ defined by the product $U_ω=D_ωS$ where $S$ is a deterministic unitary and $D_ω$ is a diagonal matrix of i.i.d. random phases. The operator $S$ is an absolutely continuous band matrix which depends on parameters controlling the size of its off-diagonal elements. We adapt the method of Aizenman-Molchanov to get exponential estimates on fractional moments of the matrix elements of $U_ω(U_ω-z)^{-1}$, provided the distribution of phases is absolutely continuous and the parameters correspond to small off-diagonal elements…
A scattering zipper is a system obtained by concatenation of scattering events with equal even number of incoming and out going channels. The associated scattering zipper operator is the unitary equivalent of Jacobi matrices with matrix entries. For infinite identical events and random phases, Lyapunov exponents positivity is proved and yields to the absence of absolutely continuous spectrum.
We give an explicit correspondence between the domains of the self-adjoint extensions of a one-dimensional Schrödinger differential operator with symmetric real-valued potential and the boundary conditions the functions in the resulting domains must satisfy. As is well known, each self-adjoint extension is parametrized by a unitary matrix. We make the correspondence of this unitary matrix with the boundary conditions explicit, recovering the most familiar types of boundary conditions as special cases. We also demonstrate this correspondence implicitly for non-symmetric real-valued potential.
Let $K$ be a simply connected compact Lie group and $T^{\ast}(K)$ its cotangent bundle. We consider the problem of "quantization commutes with reduction" for the adjoint action of $K$ on $T^{\ast}(K).$ We quantize both $T^{\ast}(K)$ and the reduced phase space using geometric quantization with half-forms. We then construct a geometrically natural map from the space of invariant elements in the quantization of $T^{\ast}(K)$ to the quantization of the reduced phase space. We show that this map is a constant multiple of a unitary map.
We study self-adjoint bounded Jacobi operators of the form: (J ψ)(n) = a_n ψ(n + 1) + b_n ψ(n) +a_{n-1} ψ(n - 1) on $\ell^2(\N)$. We assume that for some fixed q, the q-variation of $\{a_n\}$ and $\{b_n\}$ is square-summable and $\{a_n\}$ and $\{b_n\}$ converge to q-periodic sequences. Our main result is that under these assumptions the essential support of the absolutely continuous part of the spectrum of J is equal to that of the asymptotic periodic Jacobi operator. This work is an extension of a recent result of S.A.Denisov.
Given a unitary representation of a Lie group $G$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, we develop the theory of $G$-invariant self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators both using von Neumann's theorem and the theory of quadratic forms. We also analyze the relation between the reduction theory of the unitary representation and the reduction of the $G$-invariant unbounded operator. We also prove a $G$-invariant version of the representation theorem for quadratic forms. The previous results are applied to the study of $G$-invariant self-adjoint extensions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a s…
We consider compact metric graphs with an arbitrary self adjoint realisation of the differential Laplacian. After discussing spectral properties of Laplacians, we prove several versions of trace formulae, relating Laplace spectra to sums over periodic orbits on the graph. This includes trace formulae with, respectively, absolutely and conditionally convergent periodic orbit sums; the convergence depending on properties of the test functions used. We also prove a trace formula for the heat kernel and provide small-$t$ asymptotics for the trace of the heat kernel.
A one-channel operator is a self-adjoint operator on $\ell^2(\mathbb{G})$ for some countable set $\mathbb{G}$ with a rank 1 transition structure along the sets of a quasi-spherical partition of $\mathbb{G}$. Jacobi operators are a very special case. In essence, there is only one channel through which waves can travel across the shells to infinity. This channel can be described with transfer matrices which include scattering terms within the shells and connections to neighboring shells. Not all of the transfer matrices are defined for some countable set of energies. Still, many theorems from th…
We extend in this work the Jitomirskaya-Last inequality and Last-Simoncriterion for the absolutely continuous spectral component of a half-line Schrödinger operator to the special class of matrix-valued Jacobi operators $H:l^2(\mathbb{Z},\mathbb{C})\rightarrow l^2(\mathbb{Z},\mathbb{C})$ given by the law $[H \textbf{u}]_{n} := D_{n - 1} \textbf{u}_{n - 1} + D_{n} \textbf{u}_{n + 1} + V_{n} \textbf{u}_{n}$, where $(D_n)_n$ and $(V_n)_n$ are bilateral sequences of $l\times l$ self-adjoint matrices such that $0<\inf_{n\in\mathbb{Z}}s_l[D_n]\le\sup_{n\in\mathbb{Z}}s_1[D_n]<\infty$ (here, $s_k[A]$ …
This paper establishes dynamical localization properties of certain families of unitary random operators on the d-dimensional lattice in various regimes. These operators are generalizations of one-dimensional physical models of quantum transport and draw their name from the analogy with the discrete Anderson model of solid state physics. They consist in a product of a deterministic unitary operator and a random unitary operator. The deterministic operator has a band structure, is absolutely continuous and plays the role of the discrete Laplacian. The random operator is diagonal with elements g…
We survey the relationships of rank one self-adjoint and unitary perturbations as well as finite rank unitary perturbations with various branches of analysis and mathematical physics. We include the case of non-inner characteristic operator functions. For rank one perturbations and non-inner characteristic functions, we prove a representation formula for the adjoint of the Clark operator. Throughout we mention many open problems at varying levels of difficulty.
Here we give brief account of hermitian symplectic spaces, showing that they are intimately connected to symmetric as well as self-adjoint extensions of a symmetric operator. Furthermore we find an explicit parameterisation of the Lagrange Grassmannian in terms of the unitary matrices $\U (n)$. This allows us to explicitly describe all self-adjoint boundary conditions for the Schroedinger operator on the graph in terms of a unitary matrix. We show that the asymptotics of the scattering matrix can be simply expressed in terms of this unitary matrix.
This paper is devoted to the spectral properties of a class of unitary operators with a matrix representation displaying a band structure. Such band matrices appear as monodromy operators in the study of certain quantum dynamical systems. These doubly infinite matrices essentially depend on an infinite sequence of phases which govern their spectral properties. We prove the spectrum is purely singular for random phases and purely absolutely continuous in case they provide the doubly infinite matrix with a periodic structure in the diagonal direction. We also study some properties of the singula…
Let $(G,c)$ be an infinite network, and let $\mathcal{E}$ be the canonical energy form. Let $Δ_2$ be the Laplace operator with dense domain in $\ell^2(G)$ and let $Δ_{\mathcal{E}}$ be the Laplace operator with dense domain in the Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}_\mathcal{E}$ of finite energy functions on $G$. It is known that $Δ_2$ is essentially self-adjoint, but that $Δ_{\mathcal{E}}$ is \emph{not}. In this paper, we characterize the Friedrichs extension of $Δ_{\mathcal{E}}$ in terms of $Δ_2$ and show that the spectral measures of the two operators are mutually absolutely continuous with Radon-Nik…
We consider unitary analogs of $1-$dimensional Anderson models on $l^2(\Z)$ defined by the product $U_ω=D_ωS$ where $S$ is a deterministic unitary and $D_ω$ is a diagonal matrix of i.i.d. random phases. The operator $S$ is an absolutely continuous band matrix which depends on a parameter controlling the size of its off-diagonal elements. We prove that the spectrum of $U_ω$ is pure point almost surely for all values of the parameter of $S$. We provide similar results for unitary operators defined on $l^2(\N)$ together with an application to orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. We get almo…
We provide a comprehensive analysis of matrix-valued Herglotz functions and illustrate their applications in the spectral theory of self-adjoint Hamiltonian systems including matrix-valued Schrödinger and Dirac-type operators. Special emphasis is devoted to appropriate matrix-valued extensions of the well-known Aronszajn-Donoghue theory concerning support properties of measures in their Nevanlinna-Riesz-Herglotz representation. In particular, we study a class of linear fractional transformations M_A(z) of a given n \times n Herglotz matrix M(z) and prove that the minimal support of the absolut…
In the paper, we use $\mathrm{U}(2)$, the group of $2\times 2$ unitary matices, to parameterize the space of all self-adjoint boundary conditions for a fixed Sturm-Liouville equation on the interval $[0,1]$. The adjoint action of $\mathrm{U}(2)$ on itself naturally leads to a refined classification of self-adjoint boundary conditions--each adjoint orbit is a subclass of these boundary conditions. We give explicit parameterizations of those adjoint orbits of principal type, i.e. orbits diffeomorphic to the 2-sphere $S^2$, and investigate the behavior of the $n$-th eigenvalue $λ_n$ as a function…
We construct a formally self-adjoint Hamiltonian whose eigenvalues correspond to the nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function. We consider a two-dimensional Hamiltonian which couples the Berry-Keating Hamiltonian to the number operator on the half-line via a unitary transformation. We demonstrate that the unitary operator, which is composed of squeeze (dilation) operators and an exponential of the number operator, confines the eigenfunction of the Hamiltonian to one dimension as the squeezing parameter tends towards infinity. The Riemann zeta function appears at the boundary of the result…
Let $Z_N$ be a Ginibre ensemble and let $A_N$ be a Hermitian random matrix independent from $Z_N$ such that $A_N$ converges in distribution to a self-adjoint random variable $x_0$. For each $t>0$, the random matrix $A_N+\sqrt{t}Z_N$ converges in $\ast$-distribution to $x_0+c_t$, where $c_t$ is the circular variable of variance $t$, free from $x_0$. We use the Hamilton-Jacobi method to compute the Brown measure $ρ_t$ of $x_0+c_t$. The Brown measure has a density that is constant along the vertical direction inside the support. The support of the Brown measure of $x_0+c_t$ is related to the subo…
We present a new technique to obtain polynomial decay estimates for the matrix coefficients of unitary operators. Our approach, based on commutator methods, applies to nets of unitary operators, unitary representations of topological groups, and unitary operators given by the evolution group of a self-adjoint operator or by powers of a unitary operator. Our results are illustrated with a wide range of examples in quantum mechanics and dynamical systems, as for instance Schrödinger operators, Dirac operators, quantum waveguides, horocycle flows, adjacency matrices, Jacobi matrices, quantum walk…
We consider a J-self-adjoint 2x2 block operator matrix L in the Feshbach spectral case, that is, in the case where the spectrum of one main-diagonal entry is embedded into the absolutely continuous spectrum of the other main-diagonal entry. We work with the analytic continuation of one of the Schur complements of L to the unphysical sheets of the spectral parameter plane. We present the conditions under which the continued Schur complement has operator roots, in the sense of Markus-Matsaev. The operator roots reproduce (parts of) the spectrum of the Schur complement, including the resonances. …
We compute an explicit formula for the one-parameter unitary group of the single-particle Rashba spin-orbit coupled operator in dimension three. As an application, we derive the formula for the Green function for the two-particle operator, and then prove that the spin-dependent point-interaction is of class $\mathcal{H}_{-4}$. The latter is thus the example of a supersingular perturbation for which no self-adjoint operator can be constructed.
We consider the graph whose vertex set is a conjugacy class ${\mathcal C}$ consisting of finite-rank self-adjoint operators on a complex Hilbert space $H$. The dimension of $H$ is assumed to be not less than $3$. In the case when operators from ${\mathcal C}$ have two eigenvalues only, we obtain the Grassmann graph formed by $k$-dimensional subspaces of $H$, where $k$ is the smallest dimension of eigenspaces. Classical Chow's theorem describes automorphisms of this graph for $k>1$. Under the assumption that operators from ${\mathcal C}$ have more than two eigenvalues we show that every automor…
This survey focuses on two main types of finite-rank perturbations: self-adjoint and unitary. We describe both classical and more recent spectral results. We pay special attention to singular self-adjoint perturbations and model representations of unitary perturbations.
We develop a general technique for finding self-adjoint extensions of a symmetric operator that respect a given set of its symmetries. Problems of this type naturally arise when considering two- and three-dimensional Schrödinger operators with singular potentials. The approach is based on constructing a unitary transformation diagonalizing the symmetries and reducing the initial operator to the direct integral of a suitable family of partial operators. We prove that symmetry preserving self-adjoint extensions of the initial operator are in a one-to-one correspondence with measurable families o…
We construct in this article a class of closed semi-bounded quadratic forms on the space of square integrable functions over a smooth Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary. Each of these quadratic forms specifies a semi-bounded self-adjoint extension of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. These quadratic forms are based on the Lagrange boundary form on the manifold and a family of domains parametrized by a suitable class of unitary operators on the boundary that will be called admissible. The corresponding quadratic forms are semi-bounded below and closable. Finally, the representing operators c…
We completely determine the Brown measure of the sum of a self-adjoint element and an elliptic element, which is the limiting eigenvalue distribution of the random matrix \[Y_N+\sqrt{s-\frac{t}{2}}X_N+i\sqrt{\frac{t}{2}}X_N'\] where $Y_N$ is an $N\times N$ deterministic Hermitian matrix whose eigenvalue distribution converges as $N\to\infty$ and $X_N$ and $X_N'$ are independent Gaussian unitary ensembles. We also study various asymptotic behaviors of this Brown measure as the variance of the elliptic element approaches infinity.
The spectrum of the self-adjoint Schrödinger operator associated with the Kronig-Penney model on the half-line has a band-gap structure: its absolutely continuous spectrum consists of intervals (bands) separated by gaps. We show that if one changes strengths of interactions or locations of interaction centers by adding an oscillating and slowly decaying sequence which resembles the classical Wigner-von Neumann potential, then this structure of the absolutely continuous spectrum is preserved. At the same time in each spectral band precisely two critical points appear. At these points "instable"…
We introduce the weighted graph Laplacian and the notion of Schrödinger operator on a locally finite weighted graph. Concerning essential self-adjointness, we extend Wojciechowski's and Dodziuk's results for graphs with vertex constant weight. The main result in this work states that on any metrically complete weighted graph with bounded degree, the weighted graph Laplacian is essentially self-adjoint and the same holds for the Schrödinger operator provided the associated quadratic form is bounded from below. We construct for the proof a strictly positive and harmonic function which allows us …
We compute the Brown measure of $x_{0}+iσ_{t}$, where $σ_{t}$ is a free semicircular Brownian motion and $x_{0}$ is a freely independent self-adjoint element that is not a multiple of the identity. The Brown measure is supported in the closure of a certain bounded region $Ω_{t}$ in the plane. In $Ω_{t},$ the Brown measure is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure, with a density that is constant in the vertical direction. Our results refine and rigorize results of Janik, Nowak, Papp, Wambach, and Zahed and of Jarosz and Nowak in the physics literature. We also show that pushing…
Since its introduction by Hastings in [10], the technique of quasi-adiabatic continuation has become a central tool in the discussion and classification of ground state phases. It connects the ground states of self-adjoint Hamiltonians in the same phase by a unitary quasi-local transformation. This paper takes a step towards extending this result to non- self adjoint perturbations, though, for technical reason, we restrict ourselves here to weak perturbations of non-interacting spins. The extension to non-self adjoint perturbation is important for potential applications to Glauber dynamics (an…
