We present a class of warped extra dimensional models whose flavor violating interactions are much suppressed compared to the usual anarchic case due to flavor alignment. Such suppression can be achieved in models where part of the global flavor symmetry is gauged in the bulk and broken in a controlled manner. We show that the bulk masses can be aligned with the down type Yukawa couplings by an appropriate choice of bulk flavon field representations and TeV brane dynamics. This alignment could reduce the flavor violating effects to levels which allow for a Kaluza-Klein scale as low as 2-3 TeV, making the model observable at the LHC. However, the up-type Yukawa couplings on the IR brane, which are bounded from below by recent bounds on CP violation in the D system, induce flavor misalignment radiatively. Off-diagonal down-type Yukawa couplings and kinetic mixings for the down quarks are both consequences of this effect. These radiative Yukawa corrections can be reduced by raising the flavon VEV on the IR brane (at the price of some moderate tuning), or by extending the Higgs sector. The flavor changing effects from the radiatively induced Yukawa mixing terms are at around the current upper experimental bounds. We also show the generic bounds on UV-brane induced flavor violating effects, and comment on possible additional flavor violations from bulk flavor gauge bosons and the bulk Yukawa scalars.
We study radion phenomenology in the context of flavor shining in warped extra dimension models. In this unique setup, originally proposed by Rattazzi and Zaffaroni, solutions to the gauge hierarchy problem and the new physics flavor problem are unified. A special role is played by the vacuum energy on the branes, that naturally allows for flavon stabilization and parametrically raises the radion mass. We note that the radion mass squared is suppressed only by the log of the weak-Planck hierarchy, and it is in the favored range of the standard model Higgs. We emphasize that the radion to di-ph…
Theories where the Standard Model fields reside on a 3-brane, with a low fundamental cut-off and extra dimensions, provide alternative solutions to the gauge hierarchy problem. However, generating flavor at the TeV scale while avoiding flavor-changing difficulties appears prohibitively difficult at first sight. We argue to the contrary that this picture allows us to lower flavor physics close to the TeV scale. Small Yukawa couplings are generated by ``shining'' badly broken flavor symmetries from distant branes, and flavor and CP-violating processes are adequately suppressed by these symmetrie…
An approach to solving the Strong CP Problem in supersymmetric theories is discussed which uses abelian family symmetries to align the mass matrices of the quarks and squarks. In this way both the Strong CP Problem and the characteristic flavor and CP problems of supersymmetry can be solved in a single way.
The most general two-Higgs doublet model (2HDM) includes potentially large sources of flavor changing neutral currents (FCNCs) that must be suppressed in order to achieve a phenomenologically viable model. The flavor alignment ansatz postulates that all Yukawa coupling matrices are diagonal when expressed in the basis of mass-eigenstate fermion fields, in which case tree-level Higgs mediated FCNCs are eliminated. In this work, we explore models with the flavor alignment condition imposed at a very high energy scale, which results in the generation of Higgs-mediated FCNCs via renormalization gr…
A Supersymmetric Grand unified model is constructed based on SO(10)xSO(10) symmetry in which new types of Yukawa matrices couple standard and exotic fermions. Evolution of these couplings from the Grand Unified scale to the electroweak scale causes some of them to be driven to their fixed points. This solves the supersymmetric alignment problem and ensures that there are no observable flavor changing neutral currents mediated by supersymmetric particles. Fermion hierarchy and neutrino mixing constraints are automatically satisfied in this formalism.
Addressing the ${(g-2)_μ}$ anomaly and simultaneously being consistent with the tight bounds on ${μ\to e γ}$ requires a precise alignment of the lepton dipole operator in flavor space. We investigate this alignment condition in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory by considering the Renormalization Group mixing of the relevant operators. We find that semileptonic four-fermion operators, which are likely to yield a sizable contribution to the ${(g-2)_μ}$ anomaly, need to be tightly aligned to the lepton dipole operator and Yukawa coupling. We discuss how New Physics models can comply with …
The various experimental bounds on flavor-changing interactions severely restrict the low-energy flavor structures of soft supersymmetry breaking parameters. In this work, we show that with a particular assumption of Yukawa couplings, the fermion mass and sfermion soft mass matrices are simultaneously diagonalized by common mixing matrices and we then obtain an alignment solution for the flavor problems. The required condition is generated by renormalization group evolutions and achieved at low-energy scale independently of high-energy structures of couplings. In this case, the diagonal entrie…
We study the alignment of the vacuum in gauge theories with $N_f$ Dirac fermions transforming according to a complex representation of the gauge group. The alignment of the vacuum is produced by adding a small mass perturbation to the theory. We study in detail the $N_f=2,3$ and $4$ case. For $N_f=2$ and $N_f=3$ we reproduce earlier known results including the Dashen phase with spontaneous violation of the combined charge conjugation and parity symmetry, CP. For $N_f=4$ we find regions with and without spontaneous CP violation. We then generalize to an arbitrary number of flavors. Here it is s…
Isospin-violating dark matter (IVDM) has been proposed as a viable scenario to reconcile conflicting positive and null results from direct detection dark matter experiments. We show that the lowest-order dark matter-nucleus scattering rate can receive large and nucleus-dependent corrections at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the chiral expansion. The size of these corrections depends on the specific couplings of dark matter to quark flavors and gluons. In general the full NLO dark-matter-nucleus cross-section is not adequately described by just the zero-energy proton and neutron couplings. Thes…
We study the charged Higgs couplings to fermions in the "democratic" three-Higgs-doublet model, in which one doublet couples to down-type quarks, one to up-type quarks, and one to charged leptons. Flavor-changing neutral Higgs couplings are absent because the Glashow-Weinberg-Paschos condition for natural flavor conservation is in effect. We show that this model reproduces the coupling structure of the charged Higgs boson in the recently-proposed Yukawa-aligned two-Higgs-doublet model, with two subtle constraints that arise from the unitarity of the charged Higgs mixing matrix. Adding a fourth…
The standard model does not provide an explanation of the observed alignment of quark flavors i.e. why are the up and down quarks approximately aligned in their weak interactions according to their masses? We suggest a resolution of this puzzle using a combination of left-right and Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry. The quark mixings in this model vanish at the tree level and arise out of one loop radiative corrections which explains their smallness. The lepton mixings on the other hand appear at the tree level and are therefore larger. We show that all fermion masses and mixings can be fitted with a…
I describe a technicolor model (without walking) of all interactions up to energies of the order of 1000~TeV. The low energy extended technicolor model has the CTSM form. But at intermediate energy scales, additional interactions are required to give the KM mixing. I discuss the characteristic flavor changing neutral current interactions arising from this flavor physics below 1000~TeV.
With two Higgs doublets but without any discrete $Z_2$ symmetry to forbid flavor changing neutral Higgs couplings, new top Yukawa couplings $ρ_{tt}$ and $ρ_{tc}$ are allowed and naturally complex. Electroweak baryogenesis is remarkably efficient if both $ρ_{tt}$ (and $ρ_{tc}$) and exotic Higgs quartic couplings are ${\cal O}(1)$. Furthermore, the alignment phenomenon, that the observed 125 GeV boson so closely resembles the Standard Model Higgs boson, emerges naturally. One not only has many new flavor and CPV phenomena (modulo SM-like flavor organization plus alignment), but the exotic Higgs …
We consider the question of vacuum alignment in the recently proposed "composite technicolor" (CTC) models. In order for these models to work, an "ultrafermion" condensate must align in a particular way, driven by the competition between ultrafermion masses and "flavor" gauge boson exchange. We show that for ultrafermion masses large enough to explain the top quark mass, order-of-magnitude estimates are sufficient to establish that the required vacuum alignment cannot occur for perturbative values of the flavor gauge couplings. If the top quark gets its mass from some other mechanism, a detail…
Flavor symmetry has been widely studied for figuring out the masses and mixing angles of standard-model fermions. In this paper we present a framework for handling flavor symmetry breaking where the symmetry breaking is triggered by boundary conditions of scalar fields in extra-dimensional space. The alignment of scalar expectation values is achieved without referring to any details of scalar potential and its minimization procedure. As applications to non-abelian discrete flavor symmetries, illustrative lepton mass models are constructed where the S3 and A4 flavor symmetries are broken down t…
We re-examine the possibility that the solution to the supersymmetric flavor problem is related to small mixing angles in gaugino couplings induced by approximate horizontal Abelian symmetries. We prove that, for a large class of models, there is a single viable structure for the down quark mass matrix with four holomorphic zeros. Consequently, we are able to obtain both lower and upper bounds on the supersymmetric mixing angles and predict the contributions to various flavor changing neutral current processes. We find that the most likely signals for alignment are $Δm_D$ close to the present …
Although the $(g-2)_μ$ anomaly can be explained by New Physics (NP) involving only muons, a more general flavor structure is usually expected for NP operators in the Standard Model (SM) Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). In particular, if one wants to provide a combined explanation of several beyond the SM effects, like Lepton Flavor Universality (LFU) Violation, as indicated by the B anomalies, then a strong alignment of the NP operators in flavor space is required to satisfy the bounds from observables featuring Lepton Flavor Violation (LFV), like $μ\to e γ$. We derived the tight bound of $10^{…
We compute the complete supersymmetric QCD corrections to the Wilson coefficients of the magnetic and chromomagnetic operators, relevant in the calculation of b -> s gamma decays, in the MSSM with Minimal Flavor Violation. We investigate the numerical impact of the new results for different choices of the MSSM parameters and of the scale where the quark and squark mass matrices are assumed to be aligned. We find that the corrections can be important when the superpartners are relatively light, and that they depend sizeably on the scale of alignment. Finally, we discuss how our calculation can …
Apparent regularities in fermion masses and mixings are often associated with physics at a high flavor scale, especially in the context of discrete flavor symmetries. One of the main reasons for that is that the correct vacuum alignment requires usually some high scale mechanism to be phenomenologically acceptable. Contrary to this expectation, we present in this paper a renormalizable radiative neutrino mass model with an A4 flavor symmetry in the lepton sector, which is broken at the electroweak scale. For that we use a novel way to achieve the VEV alignment via an extended symmetry in the f…
Hierarchical masses of quarks and leptons are addressed by imposing horizontal symmetries. In supersymmetric Standard Models, the same symmetries play a role in suppressing flavor violating processes induced by supersymmetric particles. Combining the idea of spontaneous CP violation to control contributions to electric dipole moments (EDMs), the mass scale of supersymmetric particles can be lowered. We present supersymmetric models with $U(1)$ horizontal symmetries and discuss CP and flavor constraints. Models with two $U(1)$ symmetries are found to give a viable solution to the muon $g-2$ ano…
We consider a 4-Higgs-doublet model in which each Higgs doublet gives mass to one of the fermion sets $\{ m_t\}$, $\{ m_b,m_τ,m_c \}$, $\{ m_μ,m_s \}$, and $\{ m_d,m_u,m_e \}$. The sets have the feature that within each of them the masses are similar. Our model explains the mass hierarchies of the sets by hierarchies of the vacuum expectation values of the Higgs doublets associated to them. All Yukawa couplings are therefore of order one. Neutrino masses are generated by a type-I seesaw mechanism with PeV-scale singlet neutrinos. To avoid the appearance of tree-level flavor changing neutral cu…
We discuss the supersymmetric contribution to $ε'/ε$ in various supersymmetric flavor models. We find that in alignment models the supersymmetric contribution could be significant while in heavy squark models it is expected to be small. The situation is particularly interesting in models that solve the flavor problems by either of the above mechanisms and the remaining CP problems by means of approximate CP, that is, all CP violating phases are small. In such models, the standard model contributions cannot account for $ε'/ε$ and a failure of the supersymmetric contributions to do so would excl…
We show that the messenger-matter couplings of Flavored Gauge Mediation Models can generate substantial stop mixing, leading to Higgs masses around 126 GeV with colored superpartners below 2 TeV and even a TeV. These results are largely independent of the messenger scale. We study the spectra of a few examples with a single messenger pair coupling dominantly to the top, for different messenger scales. Flavor constraints in these models are obeyed by virtue of supersymmetric alignment: the same flavor symmetry that explains fermion masses dictates the structure of the matter-messenger couplings…
We examine the $h\to μτ$ and muon g-2 in the exact alignment limit of two-Higgs-doublet model. In this case, the couplings of the SM-like Higgs to the SM particles are the same as the Higgs couplings in the SM at the tree level, and the tree-level lepton-flavor-violating coupling $hμτ$ is absent. We assume the lepton-flavor-violating $μτ$ excess observed by CMS to be respectively from the other neutral Higgses, $H$ and $A$, which almost degenerates with the SM-like Higgs at the 125 GeV. After imposing the relevant theoretical constraints and experimental constraints from the precision electrow…
In confining lattice gauge theories in which part of the flavor group is coupled weakly to additional gauge fields, both the dynamics of the weak gauge fields as well as lattice artifacts may have non-trivial effects on the orientation of the vacuum in flavor space. Here we discuss this issue for lattice gauge theories employing staggered fermions. Staggered fermions break flavor symmetries to a much smaller group on the lattice, and orientations in flavor space that are equivalent in the continuum may be distinct on the lattice. Assuming universality, we show that in the continuum limit the w…
We present an effective flavor model for the radiative generation of fermion masses and mixings based on a SU(5)xU(2) symmetry. We assume that the original source of flavor breaking resides in the supersymmetry breaking sector. Flavor violation is transmitted radiatively to the fermion Yukawa couplings at low energy through finite supersymmetric threshold corrections. This model can fit the fermion mass ratios and CKM matrix elements, explain the non-observation of proton decay, and overcome present constraints on flavor changing processes through an approximate radiative alignment between the…
We study a type I seesaw model of neutrino masses within the framework of $A_4$ flavor symmetry. Incorporating the presence of both singlet and triplet flavons under $A_4$ symmetry, we construct the leptonic mass matrices involved in type I seesaw mechanism. We then construct the light neutrino mass matrix using the $3σ$ values of neutrino oscillation parameters keeping the presently undetermined parameters namely, the lightest neutrino mass $m_{\text{lightest}}$, one Dirac CP phase $δ$ and two Majorana phases $α, β$ as free parameters. Comparing the mass matrices derived using $A_4$ parameter…
The infra-red attractive force of the bulk gauge interactions is applied to soften the supersymmetric flavor problem in the orbifold SU(5) GUT of Kawamura. Then this force aligns in the infra-red regime the soft supersymmetry breaking terms out of their anarchical disorder at a fundamental scale, in such a way that flavor-changing neutral currents as well as dangerous CP-violating phases are suppressed at low energies. It is found that this dynamical alignment is sufficiently good compared with the current experimental bounds, as long as the diagonalization matrices of the Yukawa couplings are…
It is argued that in the context of supersymmetry, the Strong CP Problem is most naturally seen as an aspect (particularly severe) of the whole complex of flavor-violating and CP-violating problems of supersymmetry. It is shown that certain approaches to solving these flavor problems also allow simple solutions to the Strong CP Problem. The idea of ``flavor alignment" suggested by Nir and Seiberg allows not only flavor violation to be controlled but supersymmetric contributions to the theta parameter to be made acceptably small. Another approach to the flavor-violation problem, namely low-ener…
We consider the flavor structure of supersymmetric theories that can account for the deviation of the observed time-dependent CP asymmetry in B --> phi K_S from the standard model prediction. Assuming simple flavor symmetries and effective field theory, we investigate possible correlations between sizable supersymmetric contributions to b --> s transitions and to flavor changing processes that are more tightly constrained. With relatively few assumptions, we determine the properties of minimal Yukawa and soft mass textures that are compatible with the desired supersymmetric flavor-changing eff…
Confinement in asymptotically free gauge theories is accompanied by the spontaneous breaking of the global flavor symmetry. If a subgroup of the flavor symmetry group is coupled weakly to additional gauge fields, the vacuum state tends to align such that the gauged subgroup is unbroken. Independently, a lattice discretization of the continuum theory typically reduces the manifest flavor symmetry, and, in addition, can give rise to new lattice-artifact phases with spontaneously broken symmetries. Here, we study the interplay of these two phenomena for Wilson fermions, using chiral lagrangian te…
We show that new physics which breaks the left-handed SU(3)_Q quark flavor symmetry induces contributions to CP violation in Delta F = 1 couplings which are approximately universal, in that they are not affected by flavor rotations between the up and the down mass bases. (Only the short distance contributions are universal, while observables are also affected by hadronic matrix elements.) Therefore, such flavor violation cannot be aligned, and is constrained by the strongest bound from either the up or the down sectors. We use this result to show that the bound from eps'/eps prohibits an SU(3)…
We implement a comprehensive and detailed study of the alignment of Yukawa couplings in the so-called Higgs basis taking the framework of general two Higgs doublet models (2HDMs). We clarify the model input parameters and derive the Yukawa couplings considering the two types of CP-violating sources: one from the Higgs potential and the other from the three complex alignment parameters $ζ_{f=u,d,e}$. We consider the theoretical constraints from the perturbative unitarity and for the Higgs potential to be bounded from below as well as the experimental ones from electroweak precision observables.…
We present a Froggatt-Nielsen flavor model that yields a minimal realization of the type-I seesaw mechanism. This seesaw model is minimal for three reasons: (i) It features only two rather than three right-handed sterile neutrinos: N_1 and N_2, which form a pair of pseudo-Dirac neutrinos; (ii) the neutrino Yukawa matrix exhibits flavor alignment, i.e., modulo small perturbations, it contains only three independent parameters; and (iii) the N_1,2 coupling to the electron flavor is parametrically suppressed compared to the muon and tau flavors, i.e., the neutrino Yukawa matrix exhibits an approx…
A top-down approach to the flavor puzzle leads to eclectic flavor groups which include modular and traditional flavor symmetries. Based on examples of semirealistic T2/Z3 orbifold compactifications of heterotic string theory, we discuss the breakdown patterns of the eclectic flavor group via the interplay of vacuum expectation values (vevs) of moduli and flavon fields. This leads to an attractive flavor scheme with various possibilities to obtain "flavor hierarchies" through the alignment of these vevs. Despite the fact that the top-down approach gives strong restrictions for bottom-up flavor …
We study realization of the democratic form of Yukawa matrices by infrared fixed points. We investigate renormalization-group flows of Yukawa couplings in models with a single Yukawa matrix for three families, and up and down-sector Yukawa matrices. It is found that each model has its certain pattern of renormalization-group flows of Yukawa matrices. We apply them to the charged lepton sector and quark sector, and show that realistic results for the second and third families are obtained with natural initial conditions, e.g. $(V_{MNS})_{23} \sim 2/\sqrt{6}$, $m_s/m_b \sim V_{cb} \sim m_μ/m_τ$ …
If the underlying flavor symmetry is Abelian, quark mixings in $d_R$ sector are the most prominent. Such flavor violating effects can reveal itself through $\tilde d_R$ squark mixings if supersymmetry is realized in Nature. Quark-squark alignment is necessary to deal with $Δm_K$ and $ε_K$ constraints, but interestingly, with $m_{\tilde q}$, $m_{\tilde g} \sim$ TeV, the $\tilde d_R$ mixing effects are comparable to $B_d$ and $B_s$ mixings in the Standard Model, while $D^0$ mixing is tantalizingly close to some hints from data. CP phases in these mixings would therefore be deviant, and $| V_{td}…
One of the possible ways to explain the observed flavour structure of fundamental particles is to include flavor symmetries in the theories. In this work, we investigate the rare charged lepton flavour violating (cLFV) decay process ($μ\rightarrow eγ$) in two of the low scale ($\sim$TeV) seesaw models: (i) the Inverse seesaw (ISS) and (ii) Linear seesaw (LSS) models within the framework of $A_{4}$ flavour symmetry. Apart from the $ A_{4} $ flavour symmetry, some other symmetries like $U(1)_{X}$, $Z_4$ and $Z_5$ are included to construct the Lagrangian. We use results from our previous work \ci…
We discuss how, in the presence of higher-dimensional operators, the Standard Model (SM) fermion masses can be misaligned in flavor space with the Yukawa couplings to the Higgs boson, even with only one Higgs doublet. Such misalignment results in flavor-violating couplings to the Higgs and hence flavor-changing neutral current (FCNC) processes from tree-level Higgs exchange. We perform a model-independent analysis of such an effect. Specializing to the framework of a composite Higgs with partially composite SM gauge and fermion fields, we show that the constraints on the compositeness scale im…
In the dense supernova core, self-interactions may align the flavor polarization vectors of neutrinos and antineutrinos, and induce collective flavor transformations. Different alignment ansatzes are known to describe approximately the phenomena of synchronized or bipolar oscillations, and the split of neutrino energy spectra. We discuss another phenomenon observed in some numerical experiments in inverted hierarchy, showing features akin to a low-energy split of antineutrino spectra. The phenomenon appears to be approximately described by another alignment ansatz which, in the considered scen…
We discuss the fermion mass hierarchy and the flavor mixings in the fat brane scenario of a five dimensional SUSY theory. Assuming that the matter fields lives in the bulk, their zero mode wave functions are Gaussians, and Higgs fields are localized on the brane, we find simple various types of the matter configurations generating the mass matrices consistent with experimental data. Sfermion mass spectrum is also discussed using the matter configurations found above. Which type of squark mass spectra (the degeneracy, the decoupling and the alignment) is realized depends on the relative locatio…
We investigate the effects of a $Z_2$ symmetry in the CP-conserving Two-Higgs-Doublet-Model (2HDM); which is often imposed to prevent Flavor-Changing-Neutral-Currents (FCNCs) at tree-level. Specifically, we analyze how a breaking of the $Z_2$ symmetry spreads during renormalization group evolution; employing general 2-loop renormalization group equations that we have derived. Evolving the model from the electroweak to the Planck scale, we find that while the case of an exact $Z_2$ symmetric 2HDM is very constrained, a soft breaking of the $Z_2$ symmetry extends the valid parameter space region…
In the scenario that a dark matter (DM) is a weakly interacting massive particle, there are many possibilities of the interactions with the Standard Model (SM) particles to achieve the relic density of DM. In this paper, we consider one simple DM model where the DM candidate is a complex scalar and interacts with the SM particles via exchange of the Higgs particle and an extra quark, named bottom partner. The extra quark carries the same quantum number as the right-handed down-type quarks and has Yukawa couplings with the DM candidate and the right-handed down-type quarks. The Yukawa interacti…
A critical survey of the existing direct and indirect constraints on massive spin-one color octets is presented. Since such new degrees of freedom appear in any extension of the color gauge group to a product of at least two SU(3) factors, we keep our discussion as independent as possible from the underlying theory. In the framework of scenarios that involve flavor non-universal couplings, we show that excessive flavor-changing neutral currents can be avoided by a suitable alignment in flavor space. Constraints from electroweak precision observables and direct production at hadron colliders st…
We discuss the effect of CP violation in the aligned scenario of the general two-Higgs-doublet model, in which the Higgs potential and the Yukawa interaction provide additional CP-violating phases. An alignment is imposed to the Yukawa interaction in order to avoid dangerous flavor changing neutral currents. The Higgs potential is also aligned such that the coupling constants of the lightest Higgs boson, which is identified as the discovered Higgs boson with the mass of 125 GeV, are the same as those of the standard model. In general, CP-violating phases originated by the Yukawa interaction an…
We present a modified Altarelli and Feruglio $A_4$ model where an additional $A_4$ singlet-prime flavon is introduced. In this model, non-zero $θ_{13}$ is given by this additional $A_4$ singlet-prime flavon which breaks tri-bimaximal mixing. In the framework of the supersymmetry with $U(1)_R$ symmetry, we obtain vacuum expectation values (VEVs) and VEV alignments of flavons through driving fields. It is considered that flavon induces distinctive flavor violating process if flavon mass is light. Assuming mass of SUSY particles are sufficiently heavy so that the SUSY contributions can be negligi…
To measure the Yukawa couplings of the up and down quarks, Y_{u,d}, seems to be far beyond the capabilities of current and (near) future experiments in particle physics. By performing a general analysis of the potential misalignment between quark masses and Yukawa couplings, we derive predictions for the magnitude of induced flavor-changing neutral currents (FCNCs), depending on the shift in the physical Yukawa coupling of first-generation quarks. We find that a shift of -100% in the down-quark Yukawa Y_d would generically result in ds transitions in conflict with Kaon physics. This could alre…
