In the dense supernova core, self-interactions may align the flavor polarization vectors of neutrinos and antineutrinos, and induce collective flavor transformations. Different alignment ansatzes are known to describe approximately the phenomena of synchronized or bipolar oscillations, and the split of neutrino energy spectra. We discuss another phenomenon observed in some numerical experiments in inverted hierarchy, showing features akin to a low-energy split of antineutrino spectra. The phenomenon appears to be approximately described by another alignment ansatz which, in the considered scenario, reduces the (nonadiabatic) dynamics of all energy modes to only two neutrino plus two antineutrino modes. The associated spectral features, however, appear to be fragile when passing from single- to multi-angle simulations.
We demonstrate that, for every grand unified model based on a conventional type I seesaw mechanism leading to a normal light neutrino mass hierarchy, one can easily generate a corresponding model with an inverted hierarchy which yields the same neutrino oscillation parameters. However, the latter type model has several unattractive instabilities which will disfavor any grand unified type I seesaw model, if an inverted neutrino mass hierarchy is observed experimentally. This should be contrasted with the softly-broken $L_e - L_μ- L_τ$ flavor symmetry models which are eliminated, if the data fav…
We discuss the flavor conversion of supernova neutrinos in the three-flavor mixing scheme of neutrinos. We point out that by neutrino observation from supernova one can discriminate the inverted hierarchy of neutrino masses from the normal one if s_{13}^2 \gsim a few \times 10^{-4}, irrespective of which oscillation solution to the solar neutrino problem is realized in nature. We perform an analysis of data of SN1987A and obtain a strong indication that the inverted mass hierarchy is disfavored unless s_{13}^2 \lsim a few \times 10^{-4}.
Existing oscillation data point to nonzero neutrino masses with large mixings. We analyze the generic features of the neutrino Majorana mass matrix with inverted hierarchy and construct realistic {\it minimal schemes} for the neutrino mass matrix that can explain the large (but not maximal) ν_e - ν_mu mixing of MSW-LAM as well as the nearly maximal ν_mu - ν_tau mixing and the small (or negligible) ν_e --> ν_tau transition. These minimal schemes are quite unique and turn out to be extremely predictive. Implications for neutrinoless double beta decay, tritium beta decay and cosmology are analyze…
We study the effects of neutrino oscillation on supernova neutrino in the case of the inverted mass hierarchy ($m_{3} \ll m_{1} < m_{2}$) as well as the normal mass hierarchy ($m_{1} < m_{2} \ll m_{3}$). Numerical analysis using a realistic supernova and presupernova model allows us to discuss quantitatively a possibility to probe neutrino oscillation parameters. We show that information about the mass hierarchy can be obtained if $θ_{13}$ is rather large ($\sin^{2}{2 θ_{13}} > 10^{-3}$) and that $θ_{13}$ can be well probed by SuperKamiokande if the neutrino mass hierarchy is the inverted case…
The annihilation of electron-positron pairs around one second after the big bang distorts the Fermi-Dirac spectrum of neutrino energies. We determine the distortions assuming neutrino mixing with an inverted neutrino-mass hierarchy. Nonequilibrium thermodynamics, the Boltzmann equation, and numerical integration are used to achieve the results. The various types of neutrino behavior are established as a function of masses and mixing angles.
A model that gives family gauge bosons with an inverted mass hierarchy is proposed, stimulated by Sumino's cancellation mechanism for the QED radiative correction to the charged lepton masses. The Sumino mechanism cannot straightforwardly be applied to SUSY models because of the non-renormalization theorem. In this talk, an alternative model which is applicable to a SUSY model is proposed. It is essential that family gauge boson masses $m(A_i^j)$ in this model is given by an inverted mass hierarchy $m(A_i^i) \propto 1/\sqrt{m_{ei}}$, in contrast to $m(A_i^i) \propto \sqrt{m_{ei}}$ in the origi…
Supersymmetric SU(5) GUT augmented with anomaly free U(1)_F flavor symmetry is presented. Very economical field content and U(1)_F charge assignment are obtained by specific construction. In particular, three families of 10+5* chiral matter, along the SU(5) singlet states (some of which serve as right handed neutrinos) are obtained. Appealing texture zero Yukawa matrices provide natural understanding of hierarchies between charged fermion masses and mixings. The model predicts inverted hierarchical neutrino mass scenario with interesting implications.

We show that the neutrino mass matrix of the Zee-Babu model is able to fit the recent data on neutrino masses and mixing with non-zero $θ_{13}$ in the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy. The results show that the Majorana phases are equal to zero and the Dirac phase ($\de$) is predicted to either $0$ or $π$, i. e, there is no CP violation in the Zee-Babu model at the two loop level. The effective mass governing neutrinoless double beta decay and the sum of neutrino masses are consistent with the recent analysis.
Realization of the inverted hierarchy is studied in the radiative neutrino mass model with an additional doublet, in which neutrino masses and dark matter could be induced from a common particle. We show that the sufficient baryon number asymmetry is generated through resonant leptogenesis even for the case with rather mild degeneracy among TeV scale right-handed neutrinos. We also discuss the relation between this neutrino mass generation mechanism and low energy experiments for the DM direct search, the neutrinoless double $β$ decay and so on.
We explore the signals of a charged Higgs arising in a two Higgs doublet model respecting SU(2)_L times U(1) times Z_2 symmetry with three singlet right handed neutrinos, N_R. The charged Higgs in this model has negligible coupling with quarks, and has unsuppressed coupling to leptons and neutrinos. This leads to novel signatures of the charged Higgs at the LHC, especially in the case of an inverted neutrino mass hierarchy, in the form of electrons and muons with missing energy.
We study the contraints on non-flavour-blind soft supersymmetry breaking terms coming from flavour and CP violating processes in the presence of hierarchical Yukawa couplings, and quantify how much these constraints are weakened in the regions of the MSSM parameter space characterized by heavy gauginos and multi-TeV sfermion masses, respectively. We also study the inverted sfermion mass hierarchy scenario in the context of D-term supersymmetry breaking, and show that generic hierarchical Yukawa couplings with arbitrary phases require first generation squarks in the few 10 TeV range.
It is shown that MSSM with first two generations of squarks and sleptons much heavier than the third one naturally predicts the maximal stop mixing as a consequence of the RG evolution, with vanishing (or small) trilinear coupling at the high scale. The Higgs boson is generically heavy, in the vicinity of 125 GeV. In this inverted hierarchy scenario, motivated by the supersymmetric FCNC problem and models for fermion masses based on horizontal symmetries, the mass of the lightest stop is O(0.5) TeV and of gluino - O(2-3) TeV. The LSP can be either higgsino or bino or a mixture of both and it c…
We dispel the misconception that data from SN 1987A favor the normal neutrino mass hierarchy over the inverted hierarchy for $\sin^2 θ_{13} \gsim 10^{-4}$. We find comparable fits for the two hierarchies. No bound can be placed on the mixing angle $θ_{13}$ even at the 1$σ$ level.
We present successful lepton mass matrices with an inverted mass hierarchy for neutrinos, which follow from a geometrical structure of a (1+5) dimensional space-time where two extra dimensions are compactified on the T^2/Z_3 orbifold. A 5^* and a right-handed neutrino N in each family are localized on each of the equivalent three fixed points of the orbifold while three 10's and Higgs doublets H_u and H_d live in the bulk. An S_3 family symmetry is assumed on three 5^*'s and on three N's, since the three fixed points are equivalent to one another. The Higgs field ϕresponsible for the B-L break…
Neutrino oscillation data indicate the presence of a 2-3 symmetry for the left-handed neutrinos. We show that this symmetry between the second and third generations cannot be extended to include the charged leptons, no matter what basis we use. We point out that if this symmetry is also independently valid for the right-handed neutrinos, then the active neutrino spectrum is inverted, with $m_3=0$. This conclusion remains valid even when the left-handed 2-3 symmetry is broken by a non-maximal atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23}$, or a non-zero reactor angle $θ_{13}$. As previously shown by Mohapat…
Supersymmetric (SUSY) models with heavy sfermions ($m_{\tilde{f}} \sim 10$ TeV) in the first two generations and the third generation sfermion masses below 1 TeV can solve the SUSY flavor and the CP problems as well as satisfy naturalness constraints. We study the phenomenology of a string-inspired scenario and compare it with the minimal supergravity unified model (mSUGRA). The SUSY trilepton signature at the upgraded Tevatron, the $b\to sγ$ branching fraction and the neutralino dark matter relic density in this model can differ significantly from the mSUGRA model.
Supersymmetric models with an inverted mass hierarchy (IMH: multi-TeV first and second generation matter scalars, and sub-TeV third generation scalars) can ameliorate problems arising from flavor changing neutral currents, $CP$ violating phases and electric dipole moments, while at the same time satisfying conditions on naturalness. It has recently been shown that such an IMH can be generated radiatively, making use of infra-red fixed point properties of renormalization group equations given Yukawa coupling unification and suitable $GUT$ scale boundary conditions on soft SUSY breaking masses. …
Ruling out the inverted neutrino hierarchy with neutrinoless double beta decay experiments is possible if a limit on the effective mass below the minimal theoretically possible value is reached. We stress that this lower limit depends strongly on the value of the solar neutrino mixing angle: it introduces an uncertainty of a factor of 2 within its current 3 sigma range. If an experiment is not background-free, a factor of two in effective mass corresponds to a combined factor of 16 improvement for the experimental parameters running time, detector mass, background level and energy resolution. …
The comprehensive analyses are presented in the model with the inverted mass hierarchy for neutrinos, which follows from a geometrical structure of a (1+5) dimensional space-time where two extra dimensions are compactified on the T^2/Z_3 orbifold. The model gives two large lepton flavor mixings due to the S3 structure in the (1+5) dimensional space-time. It also predicts the lightest neutrino mass as m_3=(1-50)\times 10^{-5}eV and the effective neutrino mass responsible for neutrinoless double beta decays as <m>_{ee}\simeq 50 meV. The low energy CP violation, J_{CP} could be 0.02. On the other…
We reconstruct the neutrino mass matrix in flavor basis, in the case of inverted mass hierarchy (ordering), using all available experimental data on neutrino masses and oscillations. We analyze the dependence of the matrix elements m_{alpha beta} on the CP violating Dirac, delta, and Majorana, rho and sigma, phases, for different values of the absolute mass scale. We find that the present data admit various structures of the mass matrix: (i) hierarchical structures with a set of small (zero) elements; (ii) structures with equalities among various groups of elements: e-row and/or mu tau-block e…
The effects of CP-phases on the three absolute quasi-degenerate Majorana neutrino (QDN) masses are stud-ied with neutrino mass matrices obeying μ - τ symmetry for normal as well as inverted hierarchical mass patterns. We have made further investigations on 1) the prediction of solar mixing angle which lies below tri-bimaximal mixing value in consistent with neutrino oscillation observational data, 2) the prediction on absolute neutrino mass parameter (mee) in 0νββ decay, and 3) cosmological bound on the sum of the three absolute neutrino masses. The numerical analysis is carried out through th…
We present a new realization of inverted neutrino mass hierarchy based on $S_3 \times {\cal U}(1)$ flavor symmetry. In this scenario, the deviation of the solar oscillation angle from $π/4$ is correlated with the value of $θ_{13}$, as they are both induced by a common mixing angle in the charged lepton sector. We find several interesting predictions: $\te_{13}\geq 0.13$, $\sin^2\te_{12}\geq 0.31$, $\sin^2\te_{23}\simeq 0.5$ and $0\leq \cos \de \leq 0.7$ for the neutrino oscillation parameters and $0.01 {\rm eV}\stackrel{<}{_\sim}m_{\bt \bt}\stackrel{<}{_\sim} 0.02 {\rm eV}$ for the effective n…
The recent results from the Los Alamos neutrino oscillation experiment, together with assumptions of neutrino oscillation solutions for the solar and atmospheric neutrino deficit problems, may place powerful constraints on any putative scheme for neutrino masses and mixings. Assuming the validity of these experiments and assumptions, we argue that a nearly unique spectrum of neutrino masses emerges as a fit, if two additional astrophysical arguments are adopted: (1) the sum of the light neutrino masses is $\sim 5\ {\rm eV}$, as large scale structure simulations with mixed cold plus hot dark ma…
In the present work, the inverted hierarchical neutrino mass model which is characterised by opposite CP parity in the first two mass eigenvalues $(m_1,-m_2,m_3)$, is studied in order to lower the predicted value of solar mixing angle $\tan^2θ_{12}$, from the tri-bimaximal mixing (TBM), without sacrificing the conditions of maximal atmospheric mixing angle and zero reactor angle. The present attempt is different from the earlier approach where the correction from the charged lepton mass matrix is included in the leptonic mixing matrix to lower the prediction on solar mixing angle. The lowering…
Supersymmetric models with an inverted mass hierarchy (IMH: multi-TeV first and second generation matter scalars, and sub-TeV third generation and Higgs scalars) have been proposed to ameliorate phenomenological problems arising from flavor changing neutral currents (FCNCs) and CP violating processes, while satisfying conditions of naturalness. Models with an IMH already in place at the GUT scale have been shown to be constrained in that for many model parameter choices, the top squark squared mass is driven to negative values. We delineate regions of parameter space where viable models with a…
The cosmological model in which 20% of the dark matter is shared by two nearly equal mass neutrinos fits the structure of the universe on all scales. This has been motivated a $ν_μ$-$ν_τ$ oscillation explanation of the deficit of atmospheric muon neutrinos. If the observed ratio of atmospheric $nu_μ$ to $ν_e$ has an alternative explanation, the cosmological model can be retained if the deficit of solar neutrinos is explained by $ν_e$-$ν_τ$ oscillation. In this case an inverted mass hierarchy is required with $m_{ν_μ}\ll m_{ν_e} \simeq m_{ν_τ}\approx 2.4$ eV. We show that if there exists an $L_…
We examine a phenomenon recently predicted by numerical simulations of supernova neutrino flavor evolution: the swapping of supernova $ν_e$ and $ν_{μ,τ}$ energy spectra below (above) energy $\EC$ for the normal (inverted) neutrino mass hierarchy. We present the results of large-scale numerical calculations which show that in the normal neutrino mass hierarchy case, $\EC$ decreases as the assumed $ν_e\rightleftharpoonsν_{μ,τ}$ effective $2\times 2$ vacuum mixing angle ($\simeq θ_{1 3}$) is decreased. However, these calculations also indicate that $\EC$ is essentially independent of the vacuum m…
Best-fit values of recent global analyzes of neutrino data imply large solar neutrino mixing, vanishing U_{e3} and a non-maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing angle theta_{23}. We show that these values emerge naturally by the hypothesis of "scaling" in the Majorana neutrino mass matrix, which states that the ratios of its elements are equal. It also predicts an inverted hierarchy for the neutrino masses. We point out several advantages and distinguishing tests of the scaling hypothesis compared to the L_e - L_mu - L_tau flavor symmetry, which is usually assumed to provide an understanding of th…
We study models of neutrino masses which naturally give rise to an inverted mass hierarchy and bi-maximal mixing. The models are based on the see-saw mechanism with three right-handed neutrinos, which generates a single mass term of the form $ν_e(ν_μ+ν_τ)$ corresponding to two degenerate neutrinos $ν_e$ and $ν_μ+ν_τ$, and one massless neutrino $ν_μ-ν_τ$. Atmospheric neutrino oscillations are accounted for if the degenerate mass term is about $5\times 10^{-2}$ eV. Solar neutrino oscillations of the Large Mixing Angle MSW type arise when small perturbations are included leading to a mass splitti…
Recently the evidence of the neutrinoless double $β$ ($0νββ$) decay has been announced. This means that neutrinos are Majorana particles and their mass hierarchy is forced to inverted mass hierarchy (Type B) or degenerate mass (Type C) patterns in the diagonal basis of charged lepton mass matrix. We estimate the magnitude of $0νββ$ decay in the degenerate neutrinos including the cosmological constraint of neutrino dark matter, since the inverted mass hierarchy pattern always satisfies the cosmological constraint. The absolute value of neutrino mass is constrained by $0νββ$ experiment or cosmol…
We demonstrate that the detection of shock modulations of the neutrino spectra from a galactic core-collapse supernova is sufficient to obtain a high significance determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy if the supernova event is observed in both a Mton-class water Cherenkov detector and a 100 kton-class liquid argon detector. Neither detailed supernova neutrino flux modelling nor observation of Earth matter effects is needed for this determination. As a corollary, a nonzero value of θ_x will be established.
In the context of three-neutrino oscillations, we study the possibility of using antineutrinos from nuclear reactors to explore the 10^{-4} {\rm eV^2} < \ms \ltap 8\times 10^{-4} {\rm eV^2} region of the LMA MSW solution of the solar neutrino problem and measure $\ms$ with high precision. The KamLAND experiment is not expected to determine $\ms$ if the latter happens to lie in the indicated region. By analysing both the total event rate suppression and the energy spectrum distortion caused by \barν_e oscillations in vacuum, we show that the optimal baseline of such an experiment is L \sim (20 …
The Delta m^2_13 oscillation frequency for reactor neutrinos differs by 6.4% between normal and inverted mass hierarchy. This frequency difference accumulates to a phase difference over distance and time. The optimal distance is when the maximum phase difference between hierarchies occurs near the peak in the observable reactor neutrino spectrum. Added citations to some related recent work.
We propose a new parameterization to measure the neutrino mass hierarchy, namely $Δ=(m_3-m_1)/(m_1+m_3)$ which is dimensionless and varies in the range $[-1,1]$. Taking into account the results of neutrino oscillation experiments, $Δ$ is the unique parameter for determining all the masses of neutrinos, and a positive (negative) sign of $Δ$ denotes the normal (inverted) mass hierarchy. Adopting the currently available cosmic observations, we find that the normal mass hierarchy is slightly favored, and the mass of lightest neutrino is less than $0.030$ eV for the normal mass hierarchy and $0.024…
A promising way to reconcile naturalness with a decoupling solution to the SUSY flavor and CP problems is suggested by models with a radiatively driven inverted mass hierarchy (RIMH). The RIMH models arise naturally within the context of SUSY SO(10) grand unified theories. In their original form, RIMH models suffer from two problems: 1.) obtaining the radiative breakdown of electroweak symmetry, and 2.) generating the correct masses for third generation fermions. The first problem can be solved by the introduction of SO(10) D-term contributions to scalar masses. We show that correct fermion ma…
In this work we update the bounds on $\sum m_ν$ from latest publicly available cosmological data and likelihoods using Bayesian analysis, while explicitly considering particular neutrino mass hierarchies. In the minimal $Λ\textrm{CDM}+\sum m_ν$ model with most recent CMB data from Planck 2018 TT,TE,EE, lowE, and lensing; and BAO data from BOSS DR12, MGS, and 6dFGS, we find that at 95\% C.L. the bounds are: $\sum m_ν<0.12$ eV (degenerate), $\sum m_ν<0.15$ eV (normal), $\sum m_ν<0.17$ eV (inverted). The bounds vary across the different mass orderings due to different priors on $\sum m_ν$. Also, …
A possible resolution of the flavor puzzle is that the fermion mass hierarchy can be dynamically generated through the coupling of the first two generation fields to a strongly coupled sector, which is approximately conformally invariant and leads to large anomalous dimensions for the first two generation fields over a large range of energies. We investigate the possibility of using the same sector to also break supersymmetry. We show that this automatically gives an "inverted hierarchy" in which the first two generation squarks and sleptons are much heavier than the other superpartners. Imple…
We show that the temperatures of the emergent non-electron neutrinos and the binding energy released by a galactic Type II supernova are determinable, assuming the Large Mixing Angle (LMA) solution is correct, from observations at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) and at Super-Kamiokande (SK). If the neutrino mass hierarchy is inverted, either a lower or upper bound can be placed on the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$, and the hierarchy can be deduced for adiabatic transitions. For the normal hierarchy, neither can $θ_{13}$ be constrained nor can the hierarchy be determined. Our conclusion…
Texture six zero Fritzsch like as well as non Fritzsch like hermitian lepton mass matrices (144 combinations in all) have been investigated for both Majorana and Dirac neutrinos for their compatibility with the current neutrino oscillation data, keeping in mind the hierarchy of neutrino masses. All the combinations considered here for Majorana neutrino masses are ruled out by the existing data in the case of inverted hierarchy and degenerate scenario. For Majorana neutrinos with normal hierarchy, only 16 combinations can accommodate the experimental data. Assuming neutrinos to be Dirac particl…
Based on the independent measurements on neutrino mass splitting $|Δm^2_{μμ}|$, $|Δm^2_{ee}|$, $Δm^2_{21}$, and recent measurements by the T2K Collaboration, we carry out a simple fitting analysis on $Δm^2_{32}$ and $Δm^2_{31}$ in normal hierarchy and inverse hierarchy respectively, suggesting $Δm^2_{32}=(2.46\pm0.07)\times10^{-3}~\mbox{eV}^2$ and $Δm^2_{31}=(2.53\pm0.07)\times10^{-3}~\mbox{eV}^2$ in normal hierarchy, or $Δm^2_{32}$=$-(2.51\pm0.07)\times10^{-3}~\mbox{eV}^2$ and $Δm^2_{31}$=$-(2.44\pm0.07)\times10^{-3}~\mbox{eV}^2$ in invert hierarchy. The simple analysis indicate that both nor…
The neutrino mass hierarchy is one of the neutrino fundamental properties yet to be determined. We introduce a method to determine neutrino mass hierarchy by comparing the interaction rate of neutral current (NC) interactions, $ν(\hatν) + p\rightarrowν(\hatν) + p$, and inverse beta decays (IBD), $\barν_e + p\rightarrow n + e^+$, of supernova neutrinos in scintillation detectors. Neutrino flavor conversions inside the supernova are sensitive to neutrino mass hierarchy. Due to Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein effects, the full swapping of $\barν_e$ flux with the $\barν_x$ ($x=μ,~τ$) one occurs in th…
Matter effects modify the mixing and the effective masses of neutrinos in a way which depends on the neutrino mass hierarchy. Consequently, for normal and inverted hierarchies the oscillations and flavor conversion results are different. Sensitivity to the mass hierarchy appears whenever the matter effects on the 1-3 mixing and mass splitting become substantial. This happens in supernovae in wide energy range and in the matter of the Earth. The Earth density profile is a multi-layer medium where the resonance and parametric enhancements of oscillations occur. The enhancement is realized in neu…
Collective neutrino flavor transformations deep inside a supernova are sensitive to the neutrino mass hierarchy even at extremely small values of theta(13). Exploiting this effect, we show that comparison of the antineutrino signals from a galactic supernova in two megaton class water Cherenkov detectors, one of which is shadowed by the Earth, will enable us to distinguish between the hierarchies if sin^2 theta(13) < 10^{-5}. On the other hand, the observation of Earth effects in the inverted hierarchy for sin^2 theta(13) > 10^{-3} will provide a robust observable signature of collective oscil…
Neutrino-neutrino interactions can lead to collective flavor conversion in the dense parts of a core collapse supernova. Growing instabilities that lead to collective conversions have been studied intensely in the limit of two-neutrino species and occur for inverted mass ordering in the case of a perfectly spherical supernova. We examine two simple models of colliding and intersecting neutrino beams and show, that for three neutrino species instabilities exist also for normal mass ordering even in the case of a fully symmetric system. Whereas the instability for inverted mass ordering is assoc…
We discuss the seesaw mechanism which includes the minimum number of parameters for successful leptogenesis and three neutrino oscillations in the spirit of Occam's razor. We show that models with two right-handed neutrinos with two texture zeros supported by Occam's razor cannot fit the observed neutrino parameters consistently for the normal light neutrino mass hierarchy. For the inverted light neutrino mass hierarchy, on the other hand, we find that the models can fit the observed neutrino parameters consistently. Besides, we show that the model predicts the maximal Dirac CP-phase of the ne…
We investigate the sensitivity of some of the proposed next-generation neutrino experiments to a galactic supernova. In particular, we study how well the supernova parameters (the average energies and luminosities) can be separated from the unknown neutrino oscillation parameters ($θ_{13}$ and the neutrino mass hierarchy). Three types of experiments, all in the 100-kton class, are compared. These are: a 540 kton water-Cherenkov detector, a 100 kton liquid Argon detector and a 50 kton scintillator detector. We demonstrate that practically all of these proposed detectors have the possibility to …
Resonant spin-flavour (RSF) conversions of supernova neutrinos, which is induced by the interaction between the nonzero neutrino magnetic moment and supernova magnetic fields, are studied for both normal and inverted mass hierarchy. As the case for the pure matter-induced neutrino oscillation (Mikheyev--Smirnov--Wolfenstein (MSW) effect), we find that the RSF transitions are strongly dependent on the neutrino mass hierarchy as well as the value of $θ_{13}$. Flavour conversions are solved numerically for various neutrino parameter sets, with presupernova profile calculated by Woosley and Weaver…
We review how a high-statistics observation of the neutrino signal from a future galactic core-collapse supernova (SN) may be used to discriminate between different neutrino mixing scenarios. Most SN neutrinos are emitted in the accretion and cooling phase, during which the flavor-dependent differences of the emitted neutrino spectra are small and rather uncertain. Therefore the discrimination between neutrino mixing scenarios using these neutrinos should rely on observables independent of the SN neutrino spectra. We discuss two complementary methods that allow for the positive identification …
We present simple and predictive realizations of neutrino masses in theories based on the $SU(6)$ grand unifying group. At the level of the lowest-dimension operators, this class of models predicts a skew-symmetric flavor structure for the Dirac mass term of the neutrinos. In the case that neutrinos are Dirac particles, the lowest-order prediction of this construction is then one massless neutrino and two degenerate massive neutrinos. Higher-dimensional operators suppressed by the Planck scale perturb this spectrum, allowing a good fit to the observed neutrino mass matrix. A firm prediction of…
A neutrino-oscillation analysis is performed of the more finely binned Super-K atmospheric, MINOS, and CHOOZ data in order to examine the impact of neutrino hierarchy in this data set upon the value of $θ_{13}$ and the deviation of $θ_{23}$ from maximal mixing. Exact oscillation probabilities are used, thus incorporating all powers of $θ_{13}$ and $ε:=θ_{23}-π/4$. The extracted oscillation parameters are found to be dependent on the hierarchy, particularly for $θ_{13}$. We find at 90% CL are $Δ_{32} = 2.44^{+0.26}_{-0.20}$ and $2.48^{+0.25}_{-0.22}\times 10^{-3} {\rm eV}^2$, $ε=θ_{23}-π/4=0.06…
We study a very specific type of neutrino mass and mixing structure based on the idea of Strong Scaling Ansatz (SSA) where the ratios of neutrino mass matrix elements belonging to two different columns are equal. There are three such possibilities, all of which are disfavored by the latest neutrino oscillation data. We focus on the specific scenario which predicts vanishing reactor mixing angle $θ_{13}$ and inverted hierarchy with vanishing lightest neutrino mass. Motivated by several recent attempts to explain non-zero $θ_{13}$ by incorporating corrections to a leading order neutrino mass or …
Considering Dirac neutrinos and Fritzsch-like texture 6 zero and 5 zero mass matrices, detailed predictions for cases pertaining to normal/inverted hierarchy as well as degenerate scenario of neutrino masses have been carried out. All the cases considered here pertaining to inverted hierarchy and degenerate scenario of neutrino masses are ruled out by the existing data. For the normal hierarchy cases, the lower limit of m_nu_1 and of s_13 as well as the range of Dirac-like CP violating phase delta_l would have implications for the texture specific cases considered here.
One of the unresolved mysteries in neutrino physics is the neutrino mass hierarchy. We present a new method to determine neutrino mass hierarchy by comparing the events of inverse beta decays (IBD), $\barν_e + p\rightarrow n + e^+$, and neutral current (NC) interactions, $ν(\overlineν) + p\rightarrowν(\overlineν) + p$, of supernova neutrinos from accretion and cooling phases in scintillation detectors. Supernova neutrino flavor conversions depend on the neutrino mass hierarchy. On account of Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein effects, the full swap of $\barν_e$ flux with the $\barν_x$ ($x=μ,~τ$) one…
Non-linear effects on supernova neutrino oscillations, associated with neutrino self-interactions, are known to induce collective flavor transitions near the supernova core for theta_13 \neq 0. In scenarios with very shallow electron density profiles, these transformations have been shown to couple with ordinary matter effects, jointly producing spectral distortions both in normal and inverted hierarchy. In this work we consider a complementary scenario, characterized by higher electron density, as indicated by post-bounce shock-wave simulations. In this case, early collective flavor transitio…
Supersymmetric scenarios with inverted mass hierarchy can be hard to observe at a hadron collider, particularly for the non-strongly interacting sector. We show how the production of stau-pairs via gauge boson fusion, along with hard jets in the high rapidity region, can be instrumental in uncovering the signatures of such scenarios. We demonstrate this both in a model-independent way and with reference to some specific, well-motivated models.
We investigate the consequences of $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry in presence of a light sterile neutrino for the $3+1$ neutrino mixing scheme. We discuss the implications of total $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry as well partial $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry. For the total $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry we find values of $θ_{23}$ and $δ$ remains confined near $π/4$ and $\pm π/2$ respectively. The current allowed region for $θ_{23}$ and $δ$ in case of inverted hierarchy lies outside the area preferred by the total $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry. However, interesting predictions on the neutrino mixing angles and Dirac C…
Considering the mass splitting between three active neutrinos, we represent the new constraints on the sum of neutrino mass $\sum m_ν$ by updating the anisotropic analysis of Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) scale in the CMASS and LOWZ galaxy samples from Data Release 12 of the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS DR12). Combining the BAO data of 6dFGS, MGS, LOWZ and CMASS with $\textit{Planck}$~2015 data of temperature anisotropy and polarizations of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), we find that the $95\%$ C.L. upper bounds on $\sum m_ν$ refer to $\sum m_{ν,\rm NH}<0.18$ …
