The Delta m^2_13 oscillation frequency for reactor neutrinos differs by 6.4% between normal and inverted mass hierarchy. This frequency difference accumulates to a phase difference over distance and time. The optimal distance is when the maximum phase difference between hierarchies occurs near the peak in the observable reactor neutrino spectrum. Added citations to some related recent work.
Next-generation long-baseline electron neutrino appearance experiments will seek to discover CP violation, determine the mass hierarchy and resolve the $θ_{23}$ octant. In light of the recent precision measurements of $θ_{13}$, we consider the sensitivity of these measurements in a study to determine the optimal baseline, including practical considerations regarding beam and detector performance. We conclude that a detector at a baseline of at least 1000 km in a wide-band muon neutrino beam is the optimal configuration.
After the successful measurement of the mixing angle $θ_{13}$, the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy has become a priority for future neutrino experiments. We propose a conventional $ν_μ$ beam with neutrino energies in the range 2-8 GeV aimed at a Mton underwater detector at the "magic" baseline of 2600 km. In this constellation it is sufficient to distinguish ($ν_μ$ induced) track-like interactions from cascade-like interactions with moderate purity to determine the mass hierarchy.
The unknown neutrino mass hierarchy -- whether the $ν_3$ mass eigenstate is the heaviest or the lightest -- represents a major gap in our knowledge of neutrino properties. Determining the hierarchy is a critical step toward further precision measurements in the neutrino sector. The hierarchy is also central to interpreting the next generation of neutrinoless double beta decay results, plays a role in numerous cosmological and astrophysical questions, and serves as a powerful model discriminant for theories of neutrino mass generation and unification. Various current and planned experiments cla…
It is generally believed that neutrino mass hierarchy can be determined at a long baseline experiment, often using accelerator neutrino beams. Reactor neutrino experiments at an intermediate baseline have the capability to distinguish normal or inverted hierarchy. Recently it has been demonstrated that the mass hierarchy could possibly be identified using Fourier transform to the L/E spectrum if the mixing angle $\sin^2(2θ_{13})>0.02$. In this study a more sensitive Fourier analysis is introduced. We found that an ideal detector at an intermediate baseline ($\sim 60$ km) could identify the mas…
We show that by combining high precision measurements of the atmospheric delta m^2 in both the electron and muon neutrino (or anti-neutrino) disappearance channels one can determine the neutrino mass hierarchy. The required precision is a very challenging fraction of one per cent for both measurements. At even higher precision, sensitivity to the cosine of the CP violating phase is also possible. This method for determining the mass hierarchy of the neutrino sector does not depend on matter effects.
Recent measurements of large theta_{13} by Daya Bay and RENO reactor experiments have opened up the possibility of determining the neutrino mass hierarchy, i.e. the sign of the mass squared splitting Delta m_{31}^2, the CP-violating phase delta_{CP} and the octant of theta_{23}. In the light of this result, we study the performance of a low energy neutrino factory (LENF) for determination of the mass hierarchy. In particular, we explore the potential of the nu_e$ and barν_e disappearance channels at LENF to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy, that is free from the uncertainties arising from…
We discuss the experimental requirements for a mass hierarchy measurement for $θ_{13}=0$ using muon neutrino disappearance. We find that a specially optimized neutrino factory at $L \simeq 6 \,000 \, \mathrm{km}$ could do this measurement using extreme luminosities. In particular, we do not require charge identification for this purpose. In order to measure the mass hierarchy for more adequate luminosities, we explore the capabilities of low energy narrow band off-axis beams, which have relatively more events at low energies. We find that, in this case, the energy resolution of the detector qu…
We extend the Gunion Bertsch calculation of gluon radiation in single scattering to the case of finite mass quarks. This case applies to the radiative energy-loss of heavy quarks of intermediate energies propagating in a quark gluon plasma. We discuss more specifically the dead cone effect as well as the mass hierarchy of the collisional and radiative energy loss and provide some predictions for observables sensitive to the mass hierarchy of energy loss in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions.
The Long Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Experiment (LBNE) is proposed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and measure the CP phase in the leptonic sector. The current design of LBNE Phase I consists of a 10 kt liquid argon time projection chamber (LBNE10). The neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry in the electron-neutrino appearance probability has contributions from both the CP phase and the matter effect. For this reason, experimental sensitivity to the mass hierarchy depends both on the true value of the CP phase and the true mass hierarchy; LBNE10 will determine the mass hierarchy at high le…
10 years from now reactor neutrino experiments will attempt to determine which neutrino mass eigenstate is the most massive. In this letter we present the results of more than seven million detailed simulations of such experiments, studying the dependence of the probability of successfully determining the mass hierarchy upon the analysis method, the neutrino mass matrix parameters, reactor flux models, geoneutrinos and, in particular, combinations of baselines. We show that a recently reported spurious dependence of the data analysis upon the high energy tail of the reactor spectrum can be rem…
The relatively large measured value of $θ_{13}$ has opened up the possibility of determining the neutrino mass hierarchy through earth matter effects. Amongst the current accelerator-based experiments only NOvA has a long enough baseline to observe earth matter effects. However, NOvA is plagued with uncertainty on the knowledge of the true value of $δ_{CP}$, and this could drastically reduce its sensitivity to the neutrino mass hierarchy. The earth matter effect on atmospheric neutrinos on the other hand is almost independent of $δ_{CP}$. The 50 kton magnetized Iron CALorimeter at the India-ba…
We show that for recently discovered large values of theta(13), a superbeam with an average neutrino energy of ~ 5 GeV, such as those being proposed at CERN, if pointing to Super-Kamiokande (L = 8770 km), could reveal the neutrino mass hierarchy at 5 sigma in less than two years irrespective of the true hierarchy and CP phase. The measurement relies on the near resonant matter effect in the numu to nue oscillation channel, and can be done counting the total number of appearance events with just a neutrino beam.
Crucial developments in neutrino physics would be the determination of the mass hierarchy (MH) and measurement of the CP phase in the leptonic sector. The patterns of the transition probabilities $P(ν_μ\rightarrow ν_τ)$ and $P(\barν_μ\rightarrow \barν_τ)$ are sensitive to these oscillation parameters. An asymmetry parameter can be defined as the difference of these two probabilities normalized to their sum. The profile of the asymmetry parameter gives a clear signal of the mass ordering as it is found to be positive for inverted hierarchy and negative for normal hierarchy. The asymmetry parame…
Building on earlier studies, we investigate the possibility to determine the type of neutrino mass spectrum (i.e., "the neutrino mass hierarchy") in a high statistics reactor electron antineutrino experiment with a relatively large KamLAND-like detector and an optimal baseline of 60 Km. We analyze systematically the Fourier Sine and Cosine Transforms (FST and FCT) of simulated reactor antineutrino data with reference to their specific mass hierarchy-dependent features discussed earlier in the literature. We perform also a binned χ^2 analysis of the sensitivity of simulated reactor electron ant…
We reconsider a generation of up-type quark mass hierarchy in the standard model and clarify how a mechanism works to realize the hierarchy without severe fine tuning.
A large hierarchy of the Dirac masses can result in a small hierarchy for the low energy masses of the active neutrinos. This can happen even if the Majorana masses of right-handed neutrinos are all equal. A realistic description of the observed neutrino masses and mixing can be obtained starting from a large hierarchy in the Dirac masses. A large mixing for solar neutrinos results from the neutrino sector. The small value of the MNS matrix element U_e3 is a natural consequence of the scheme. The masses of the two lighter neutrinos are related to the solar neutrino mixing angle: mu_1/mu_2 = ta…
We dispel the misconception that data from SN 1987A favor the normal neutrino mass hierarchy over the inverted hierarchy for $\sin^2 θ_{13} \gsim 10^{-4}$. We find comparable fits for the two hierarchies. No bound can be placed on the mixing angle $θ_{13}$ even at the 1$σ$ level.
Based on the independent measurements on neutrino mass splitting $|Δm^2_{μμ}|$, $|Δm^2_{ee}|$, $Δm^2_{21}$, and recent measurements by the T2K Collaboration, we carry out a simple fitting analysis on $Δm^2_{32}$ and $Δm^2_{31}$ in normal hierarchy and inverse hierarchy respectively, suggesting $Δm^2_{32}=(2.46\pm0.07)\times10^{-3}~\mbox{eV}^2$ and $Δm^2_{31}=(2.53\pm0.07)\times10^{-3}~\mbox{eV}^2$ in normal hierarchy, or $Δm^2_{32}$=$-(2.51\pm0.07)\times10^{-3}~\mbox{eV}^2$ and $Δm^2_{31}$=$-(2.44\pm0.07)\times10^{-3}~\mbox{eV}^2$ in invert hierarchy. The simple analysis indicate that both nor…
It is shown that a fermion mass matrix changing in orientation (rotating) with changing scales can give a simple yet near-quantitative explanation for quark mixing, neutrino oscillations and the fermion mass hierarchy.
We propose a dynamical mass-generation scenario which naturally realizes the mass hierarchy among the neutrinos, charged leptons and quarks, where the mass is dominated by the self-mass induced through the anomalous (i.e. non-minimal) gauge interactions.
$QCD$ renormalization for the top-quark mass is calculated in a mass geometrical mean hierarchy, $m_d m_b = m_s^2$ and $m_u m_t = m_c^2$. The physical mass, $m_t(m_t) = 160 {\pm} 50 GeV$ is obtained, which agrees very well with electroweak precision measurement.
We show how one could determine the neutrino mass hierarchy with Mossbauer neutrinos and also revisit the question of whether the hierarchy can be determined with reactor neutrinos.
After the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ has been precisely measured by the reactor antineutrino experiments, one of the most important open questions left in neutrino physics is the neutrino mass hierarchy. Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is designed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy (MH) without exploring the matter effect. The JUNO site location is optimized to have the best sensitivity for the mass hierarchy determination. JUNO will employ a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector located in a laboratory 700 meters underground. The excellent energy resolution and PMT c…
Recently the evidence of the neutrinoless double $β$ ($0νββ$) decay has been announced. This means that neutrinos are Majorana particles and their mass hierarchy is forced to inverted mass hierarchy (Type B) or degenerate mass (Type C) patterns in the diagonal basis of charged lepton mass matrix. We estimate the magnitude of $0νββ$ decay in the degenerate neutrinos including the cosmological constraint of neutrino dark matter, since the inverted mass hierarchy pattern always satisfies the cosmological constraint. The absolute value of neutrino mass is constrained by $0νββ$ experiment or cosmol…
A mechanism to have the quark mass hierarchy in the supersymmetric composite model is proposed. The source of the hierarchy is the kinetic-term mixing between composite quarks. Such mixing can be expected, if quarks are composite particles. A model in which the mechanism works is constructed, although it is not perfectly realistic because of some assumptions and unnaturalness.
The consequences of adding random perturbations (anarchy) to a baseline hierarchical model of quark masses and mixings are explored. Even small perturbations of the order of 5% of the smallest non-zero element can already give deviations significantly affecting parameters of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix, so any process generating the anarchy should in general be limited to this order of magnitude. The regularities of quark masses and mixings thus appear to be far from a generic feature of randomness in the mass matrices, and more likely indicate an underlying order.
Many neutrino mass models postulate the existence of at least two extra fermions in order to account for the measured solar and atmospheric mass splittings. In these models, however, the predicted hierarchy between the two mass splittings is generically much larger than the observed one, unless extra flavor symmetries are introduced. We present in this letter a radiative neutrino mass model consisting of the Standard Model extended by one heavy fermionic singlet and two scalars which predicts, under very general conditions, a neutrino mass hierarchy in qualitative agreement with the experiment…
A multiflavor model for dynamical chiral breaking reveals a solution highly suitable for stimulation of flavor mass hierarchy and mixings. The mechanism triggering the both phenomena simultaneously suppresses flavor changings. Thus, the main features of the observed quark system may spontaneously appear as inherent properties of a specific ground state.
We propose a new parameterization to measure the neutrino mass hierarchy, namely $Δ=(m_3-m_1)/(m_1+m_3)$ which is dimensionless and varies in the range $[-1,1]$. Taking into account the results of neutrino oscillation experiments, $Δ$ is the unique parameter for determining all the masses of neutrinos, and a positive (negative) sign of $Δ$ denotes the normal (inverted) mass hierarchy. Adopting the currently available cosmic observations, we find that the normal mass hierarchy is slightly favored, and the mass of lightest neutrino is less than $0.030$ eV for the normal mass hierarchy and $0.024…
The possibility that the mass hierarchy is intimately associated with the compositeness level of the matters is proposed in supersymmetric gauge theory. This implies, for instance, that the preons constituting top quark consists of the ``prepreons'' binded by the same gauge force making the charm quark out of another preons. The exemplifying toy model illustrates how the hierarchy in the yukawa coupling constants in the up-quark sector is generated from the underlying gauge dynamics. It is also indicated that the incorporation of down-type quarks as elementary objects leads to unpleasant resul…
Non-zero leptonic CP phases in the neutrino sector are clear evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model and have many implications in particle physics and cosmology. Some clues to maximal Dirac CP violation $δ_{CP}=3π/2$ are reviewed. An approach to connect the Dirac CP violation phase and the neutrino mass hierarchy in terms of the measurement of CP asymmetry is proposed. Under appropriate requirements for baseline distance and beam energy, the problem of neutrino mass hierarchy can be revealed at maximal Dirac CP violation. General allowed parameter spaces are investigated, within which …
In non-supersymmetric grand unified models a ``radiative fermion mass hierarchy" can be achieved in which the spectrum of quark and lepton masses is determined entirely by physics at the unification scale, with many relations following from the unified gauge symmetry, and with the masses of the lightest family arising from loops. A simple, realistic, and predictive model of this kind is presented. A "doubly lopsided" structure, known to lead to bilarge neutrino mixing, plays a crucial role in the radiative hierarchy.
We consider a neutrino mass model where all leptonic mixing is induced by a heavy Majorana sector through the seesaw type I mechanism, while the Dirac mass matrices are diagonal. Such a pattern occurs naturally in grand unified theories. Constraints on the parameters of the models are considered and it is shown that a normal neutrino mass hierarchy is preferred. The lightest neutrino mass is typically small, leading to nonobservable rates for neutrinoless double beta decay in the normal hierarchy case.
We study the effects of neutrino oscillation on supernova neutrino in the case of the inverted mass hierarchy ($m_{3} \ll m_{1} < m_{2}$) as well as the normal mass hierarchy ($m_{1} < m_{2} \ll m_{3}$). Numerical analysis using a realistic supernova and presupernova model allows us to discuss quantitatively a possibility to probe neutrino oscillation parameters. We show that information about the mass hierarchy can be obtained if $θ_{13}$ is rather large ($\sin^{2}{2 θ_{13}} > 10^{-3}$) and that $θ_{13}$ can be well probed by SuperKamiokande if the neutrino mass hierarchy is the inverted case…
We show that a simultaneous explanation for fermionic mass hierarchy among and within the fermionic families, quark-mixing, can be obtained in an extension of the standard model, with real singlet scalar fields, which is UV completed by vector-like fermions and a strongly interacting sector.
Matter effects modify the mixing and the effective masses of neutrinos in a way which depends on the neutrino mass hierarchy. Consequently, for normal and inverted hierarchies the oscillations and flavor conversion results are different. Sensitivity to the mass hierarchy appears whenever the matter effects on the 1-3 mixing and mass splitting become substantial. This happens in supernovae in wide energy range and in the matter of the Earth. The Earth density profile is a multi-layer medium where the resonance and parametric enhancements of oscillations occur. The enhancement is realized in neu…
Using radiative correction and seesaw mechanism,we derive analytic formulas for neutrino masses in SUSY unified theories exhibiting, for the first time, a new hierarchial relation among them. The new hierarchy is found to be quite significant especially for smaller values of $\tanβ$.
We consider a class of discrete flavour symmetries for leptons based on the group S(3) and A(4) with an hybrid breaking pattern. The aim is to construct models in which the same flavon fields producing the mixing pattern are also responsible for the mass hierarchy.
The Coulomb enhancement of low energy electrons in nuclear beta decay generates sharp cutoffs in the accompanying antineutrino spectrum at the beta decay endpoint energies. It has been conjectured that these features will interfere with measuring the effect of a neutrino mass hierarchy on an oscillated nuclear reactor antineutrino spectrum. These sawtooth-like features will appear in detailed reactor antineutrino spectra, with characteristic energy scales similar to the oscillation period critical to neutrino mass hierarchy determination near a 53 km baseline. However, these sawtooth-like dist…
We discuss the neutrino mass hierarchy determination with atmospheric neutrinos in PINGU (Precision IceCube Next Generation Upgrade), based on a simulation with the GLoBES software including the full three flavor framework and parameter degeneracy, and we compare it to long-baseline experiment options. We demonstrate that the atmospheric mass hierarchy sensitivity depends on the achievable experiment properties and we identify the main targets for optimization, whereas the impact of a large number of tested systematical errors turns out to be small. Depending on the values of theta_23, delta, …
We use the natural $SU(3)\times U(1)$ global symmetry of the gauge-fermion interaction sector of the standard model to discuss the fermion mass hierarchy problem. The $SU(3)$ sixtet and triplet Higgs are introduced. The Yukawa sector is partially symmetric. The smaller the symmetry of a Yukawa term, the smaller its coupling constant. The mass hierarchy is a combined effect of smaller coupling constants and smaller VEVs. There is a bunch of pseudo-goldstone bosons which obtains their masses mainly from the small explicit breaking terms in the Higgs potential.
The neutrino mass hierarchy is one of the neutrino fundamental properties yet to be determined. We introduce a method to determine neutrino mass hierarchy by comparing the interaction rate of neutral current (NC) interactions, $ν(\hatν) + p\rightarrowν(\hatν) + p$, and inverse beta decays (IBD), $\barν_e + p\rightarrow n + e^+$, of supernova neutrinos in scintillation detectors. Neutrino flavor conversions inside the supernova are sensitive to neutrino mass hierarchy. Due to Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein effects, the full swapping of $\barν_e$ flux with the $\barν_x$ ($x=μ,~τ$) one occurs in th…
We present an SU(9) model of family unification with three light chiral families, and a natural hierarchy of charged fermion masses and mixings. The existence of singlet right handed neutrions with masses about two orders of magnitude smaller than the GUT scale, as needed to understand the light neutrinos masses via the see-saw mechanism, is compelling in our model.
Exponential lepton mass ratios are studied in a low energy phenomenology. In view of the known data, the mass patterns of the charged leptons and widely discussed quasi-degenerate neutrinos are related to one another by two different traits - opposite mass ratios with large versus small exponents, and probably conformable mass-degeneracy-deviation hierarchies. The solar-atmospheric hierarchy parameter should have a special physical meaning in the Q-D neutrino scenario. A general generic hierarchy equation with two opposite solutions respectively for the charged lepton and neutrino mass ratios …
The latest cosmological constraints on the sum of neutrino masses, in combination with the latest laboratory measurements on oscillations, provide ``decisive" Bayesian evidence for the normal neutrino mass hierarchy. We show that this result holds across very different prior alternatives by exploring two extremes on the range of prior choices. In fact, while the specific numerical value for the Evidence depends on the choice of prior, the Bayesian odds remain greater than 140:1 across very different prior choices. For Majorana neutrinos this has important implications for the upper limit of th…
The fact that quarks of the same electric charge possess a mass hierarchy is a big puzzle in particle physics, and it must be highly correlated with the hierarchy of quark flavor mixing. This review article is intended to provide a brief description of some important issues regarding quark masses, flavor mixing and CP violation. A comparison between the salient features of quark and lepton flavor mixing structures is also made.
Recently various phenomenological implications of the existence of extra space-time dimensions have been investigated. In this letter, we construct a model with realistic fermion mass hierarchy with (large) extra dimensions beyond the usual four dimensions. In this model, it is assumed that some matter fields live in the bulk and the others are confined on our four dimensional wall. It can naturally reproduce the quark and lepton mass hierarchy and mixing angles without any symmetry arguments. We also discuss some possibilities of obtaining suitable neutrino masses and mixings for the solar an…
In the next decade, a number of experiments will attempt to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy. Feasibility studies for such experiments generally determine the expected value of Delta chi^2. As the hierarchy is a discrete choice, Delta chi^2 does not obey a one degree of freedom chi^2 distribution and so the number of sigmas of confidence of the hierarchy determination is not the square root of the expected Delta chi^2. We present a simple formula for the sensitivity to the hierarchy that can be expected from the median experiment as a function of the expected Delta chi^2.
A link is established between the observed (approximate) geometric mass hierarchy of quarks and leptons and the triangular structure of their tenable flavor representations. This singles out SU(3) as the horizontal flavor group, thereby linking the Fermi mass hierarchy with the threefold family replication. These linkages are exploited within a flavor-chiral SU(3) model, with fermions and Higgs bosons in the 3+6* representation. The model is Left-Right symmetric and utilizes the universal see-saw mechanism with a geometric mass suppression pattern. Given certain assumptions, the model produces…
We study a hybrid model in which the Technicolor and fundamental heavy scalars live together. We concern extreme case, where electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) comes almost entirely from the strong dynamics of Technicolor, but the masses of the light fermions, e.g. leptons arises due to the weakly interacting scalars with one universal Yukawa interaction. We have found that SU(2) scalar two doublets, which are private but universal for each generation, offer a natural explanation of the vertical mass hierarchy. There is no large Yukawa coupling in the theory and the scalar masses are expecte…
This article reports the optimized experimental requirements to determine neutrino mass hierarchy using electron antineutrinos ($\barν_e$) generated in a nuclear reactor. The features of the neutrino mass hierarchy can be extracted from the $|Δm^{2}_{31}|$ and $|Δm^{2}_{32}|$ oscillations by applying the Fourier sine and cosine transform to the $L/E$ spectrum. To determine the neutrino mass hierarchy above 90\% probability, the requirements on the energy resolution as a function of the baseline are studied at $\sin 2θ_{13}=0.1$. If the energy resolution of the neutrino detector is less than $0…
If the hierarchy of quark masses comes out of simultaneous dynamical chiral and flavor symmetry breakings, it is inevitably accompanied by the flavor mixing. Therefore, these phenomena, independent in the standard model and in many of its generalizations, become related since they appear out of the same dynamics. The features of that high energy dynamics may be investigated via accordance with observed mass hierarchy and mixing.
We update our study of neutrino mass hierarchy determination using a high statistics reactor electron anti-neutrino experiment in the light of the recent evidences of a relatively large non-zero value of θ_{13} from the Daya Bay and RENO experiments. We find that there are noticeable modifications in the results, which allow a relaxation in the detector's characteristics, such as the energy resolution and exposure, required to obtain a significant sensitivity to, or to determine, the neutrino mass hierarchy in such a reactor experiment.
Some phenomenological aspects of a supersymmetric model for fermion mass hierarchy proposed previously are discussed. It is required that the lepton universality violation is near to its current experimental bound. The lepton number violation decay modes $τ\to 2eμ$ and $3μ$ maybe observable in the near future. The Majorana mass of electron-neutrino is predicted to be about 0.1 eV. The fine-tuning problem is discussed.
We derive the lower bound on absolute scale of lightest neutrino mass for normal hierarchy and inverted hierarchy pattern of light neutrinos by studying the new physics contributions to charged lepton flavour violating decays and neutrinoless double beta decay in the framework of a TeV scale left-right symmetric model. Neutrino mass is generated in the model via type-II seesaw dominance with the help of a heavy sterile neutrino. This scenario allows large light-heavy neutrino mixing and the mixing facilitates new channels for neutrinoless double beta decay and lepton flavour violating decays. …
This article illustrates the possibility of investigating mass hierarchy and CP-violating phase δ^{CP}, in the context of CP trajectory diagrams in the bi-probability plane. Separation between normal mass hierarchy (NH) and inverted mass hierarchy (IH) CP trajectory ellipses in the P-P^T plane seems to be very promising in order to investigate mass hierarchy. Illustration of separation between two hierarchy ellipses in the E-L plane is very helping to cover all the desired base lines and beam energies and also to analyze benefits and drawbacks at single place. If we know the mass hierarchy, th…
We present a model of neutrino masses combining the seesaw mechanism and strong Dirac mass hierarchy and at the same time exhibiting a significantly reduced hierarchy at the level of active neutrino masses. The heavy Majorana masses are assumed to be degenerate. The suppression of the hierarchy is due to a symmetric and unitary operator R whose role is discussed. The model gives realistic mixing and mass spectrum. The mixing of atmospheric neutrinos is attributed to the charged lepton sector whereas the mixing of solar neutrinos is due to the neutrino sector. Small U_e3 is a consequence of the…
The annihilation of electron-positron pairs around one second after the big bang distorts the Fermi-Dirac spectrum of neutrino energies. We determine the distortions assuming neutrino mixing with an inverted neutrino-mass hierarchy. Nonequilibrium thermodynamics, the Boltzmann equation, and numerical integration are used to achieve the results. The various types of neutrino behavior are established as a function of masses and mixing angles.
