We show that a simultaneous explanation for fermionic mass hierarchy among and within the fermionic families, quark-mixing, can be obtained in an extension of the standard model, with real singlet scalar fields, which is UV completed by vector-like fermions and a strongly interacting sector.
We present a new mechanism for solving the fermionic masses and mixing hierarchies of the standard model through a minimal symmetry $\mathcal{Z}_2 \times \mathcal{Z}_5$. The mechanism is also capable of explaining the neutrino masses and mixing parameters. The phenomenological bounds arising from kaon mixing are also derived on the parameter space of the model.
We develop a 5d model for ElectroWeak physics based on a non compact warped extra dimension of finite length, known as the soft wall scenario, where all the dynamical degrees of freedom propagate in the 5d bulk. We solve the equations of motion and find the allowed spectra, showing that the mass of the lightest fermionic mode behaves as a power law of the effective 4d Yukawa coupling constant, with the exponent being the corresponding fermionic 5d bulk mass. Precisely this non universal behavior allows us to reproduce the hierarchy between the Standard Model (SM) fermion masses (from neutrinos…
We reconsider the gauge hierarchy problem from the viewpoint of effective field theories and a high-energy physics, motivated by the alternative scenario that the standard model holds up to a high-energy scale such as the Planck scale. The problem is restated as the question whether it is possible to construct a low-energy effective theory and the interaction with heavy particles, without spoiling the structure of a high-energy physics supported by an excellent concept. Based on this reinterpretation, we give a conjecture that theories with hidden fermionic symmetries can be free from the gaug…
A mass of the Higgs boson close to 126 GeV may give a hint that the standard model of particle physics is valid up to the Planck scale. We discuss perspectives for the solution of the gauge hierarchy problem at high scales. Scenarios with an ultraviolet fixed point have predicted a Higgs boson mass very close to 126 GeV if the fixed point value of the quartic scalar coupling is small. In this case the top quark pole mass should be close to 172 GeV.
The chiral Gross-Neveu model or equivalently the linearized Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation has been mapped to the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) hierarchy in the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur formalism by Correa, Dunne and Plyushchay. We derive the general expression for exact fermionic solutions for all gap functions in the arbitrary order of the NLS hierarchy. We also find that the energy spectrum of the n-th NLS hierarchy generally has n+1 gaps. As an illustration, we present the self-consistent two-complex-kink solution with four real parameters and two fermion bound states. The two kinks can be …
I discuss the problem of generation mass hierarchy in the context of realistic superstring models which are constructed in the free fermionic formulation. These models correspond to models which are compactified on $Z_2\times Z_2$ orbifold. I suggest that the hierarchy among the generations results from horizontal symmetries, which arise from the compactification. In particular, I show that in a class of free fermionic standard--like models, the suppression of the mass terms for the lightest generation is a general, and unambiguous, characteristic of these models. I show that the mixing betwee…
Many neutrino mass models postulate the existence of at least two extra fermions in order to account for the measured solar and atmospheric mass splittings. In these models, however, the predicted hierarchy between the two mass splittings is generically much larger than the observed one, unless extra flavor symmetries are introduced. We present in this letter a radiative neutrino mass model consisting of the Standard Model extended by one heavy fermionic singlet and two scalars which predicts, under very general conditions, a neutrino mass hierarchy in qualitative agreement with the experiment…
A generalization of the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Model (NMSSM) is studied in which an explicit μ-term as well as a small supersymmetric mass term for the singlet superfield are incorporated. We study the possibility of raising the Standard Model-like Higgs mass at tree level through its mixing with a light, mostly-singlet, CP-even scalar. We are able to generate Higgs boson masses up to 145 GeV with top squarks below 1.1 TeV and without the need to fine tune parameters in the scalar potential. This model yields light singlet-like scalars and pseudoscalars passing all collider constraints…
In theories with (sets of) two large extra dimensions and supersymmetry in the bulk, the presence of non-supersymmetric brane defects naturally induces a logarithmic potential for the volume of the transverse dimensions. Since the logarithm of the volume rather than the volume itself is the natural variable, parameters of O(10) in the potential can generate an exponentially large size for the extra dimensions. This provides a true solution to the hierarchy problem, on the same footing as technicolor or dynamical supersymmetry breaking. The area moduli have a Compton wavelength of about a milli…
In this paper, we propose a possible new approach towards solving the gauge hierarchy problem without supersymmetry and without extra spacetime dimensions. This approach relies on the finiteness of string theory and the conjectured stability of certain non-supersymmetric string vacua. One crucial ingredient in this approach is the idea of ``misaligned supersymmetry'', which explains how string theories may be finite even without exhibiting spacetime supersymmetry. This approach towards solving the gauge hierarchy problem is therefore complementary to recent proposals involving both large and s…
We present a new solution to the Hierarchy Problem utilizing non-linearly realized discrete symmetries. The cancelations occur due to a discrete symmetry that is realized as a shift symmetry on the scalar and as an exchange symmetry on the particles with which the scalar interacts. We show how this mechanism can be used to solve the Little Hierarchy Problem as well as give rise to light axions.
The supersymmetric $SU(6)$ model accompanied by the flavour-blind discrete symmetry $Z_3$ can succesfully deal with such key problems of SUSY GUTs, as are the gauge hierarchy/doublet-triplet splitting, $μ$-problem and flavour problem. The Higgs doublets arise as Goldstone modes of the spontaneously broken {\em accidental} global $SU(6)\times U(6)$ symmetry of the Higgs superpotential. Their couplings to fermions have peculiarities leading to the consistent picture of the quark and lepton masses and mixing, without invoking any of horizontal symmetry/zero texture concepts. In particular, the on…
Many theories require augmenting the Standard Model with additional scalar fields with large order one couplings. We present a new solution to the hierarchy problem for these scalar fields. We explore parity- and $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetric theories where the Standard Model Higgs potential has two vacua. The parity or $\mathbb{Z}_2$ copy of the Higgs lives in the minimum far from the origin while our Higgs occupies the minimum near the origin of the potential. This approach results in a theory with multiple light scalar fields but with only a single hierarchy problem, since the bare mass is tied …
The brane world scenario advocated by Arkani-Hamed et al. transmutes the hierarchy problem into explaining why extra dimensions have sizes much larger than the fundamental scale. In this paper we discuss possible solutions to this problem by considering the compactified dimensions to be populated by a large number of branes in a crystal lattice. The experimental consequences of this scenario are described, including the presence of large energy gaps in the spectrum of Kaluza-Klein modes.
If the atmospheric neutrino oscillation amplitude, sin^2 2theta_atm is not maximal, there is a two fold ambiguity in the neutrino parameter space: sin^2 theta_atm>0.5 or sin^2 theta_atm<0.5. In this article, we study the impact of this degeneracy, the so-called octant degeneracy, on the T2KK experiment, which is a proposed extension of the T2K (Tokai-to-Kaimoka) neutrino oscillation experiment with an additional water cherenkov detector placed in Korea. We find that the degeneracy between sin^2 theta_atm= 0.40 and 0.60 can be resolved at the 3sigma level for sin^2 2theta_rct>0.12 (0.08) for th…
We analyze cosmological solutions in the class of two-brane models with arbitrary tensions which contain matter with general equations of state. We show that the mass hierarchy between the two branes is determined by the ratio of the lapse functions evaluated on the branes. This ratio can be sufficiently small without fine-tuning the brane separation, once the transverse dimension is stabilized. For suitably large interbrane separations, both brane tensions are positive. We also find that the cosmological evolution obeys the standard four-dimensional Friedman equation up to small corrections.
In SO(10) grand unified theories (GUTs) the hierarchy which is present in the Dirac mass term of the neutrinos is generically as strong as the one in the up-type quark mass term. We propose a mechanism to partially or completely cancel this hierarchy in the light neutrino mass matrix in the seesaw context. The two main ingredients of the cancellation mechanism are the existence of three fermionic gauge singlets and of a discrete flavor symmetry G_f which is broken at a higher scale than SO(10). Two realizations of the cancellation mechanism are presented. The realization based on the Frobenius…
Extensions of the Standard Model often come with additional, possibly electroweakly charged Higgs states, the prototypal example being the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model. While collider phenomenology does not exclude the possibility for some of these new scalar fields to be light, it is relatively natural to consider masses in the multi-TeV range, in which case the only remaining light Higgs boson automatically receives SM-like properties. The appearance of a hierarchy between the new-physics states and the electroweak scale then leads to sizable electroweak corrections, e. g. in the decays of the he…
We continue the investigation of the physics implications of a class of flat directions for a prototype quasi-realistic free fermionic string model (CHL5), building upon the results of the previous paper in which the complete mass spectrum and effective trilinear couplings of the observable sector were calculated to all orders in the superpotential. We introduce soft supersymmetry breaking mass parameters into the model, and investigate the gauge symmetry breaking patterns and the renormalization group analysis for two representative flat directions, which leave an additional $U(1)'$ as well a…
We investigate the possibility of constructing a renormalizable standard model with purely fermionic matter content. The Higgs scalar is replaced by point-like fermionic self-interactions with couplings growing large at the Fermi scale. An analysis of the UV behavior in the point-like approximation reveals a variety of non-Gaussian fixed points for the fermion couplings. If real, such fixed points would imply nonperturbative renormalizability and evade triviality of the Higgs sector. For point-like fermionic self-interactions and weak gauge couplings, one encounters a hierarchy problem similar…

A very simple mechanism is proposed that stabilizes the orbifold geometry within the context of the Randall-Sundrum proposal for solving the hierarchy problem. The electroweak TeV scale is generated from the Planck scale by spontaneous breaking of the orbifold symmetry
I discuss in detail the construction of realistic superstring standard--like models in the four dimensional free fermionic formulation. The analysis results in a restricted class of models with unique characteristics: (i) Three and only three generations of chiral fermions with their superpartners and the correct Standard Model quantum numbers. (ii) Proton decay from dimension four and dimension five operators is suppressed due to gauged $U(1)$ symmetries. (iii) There exist Higgs doublets from two distinct sectors, which can generate realistic symmetry breaking. (iv) These models explain the t…
I outline a program to derive the Standard Model directly from superstring theory. I present a class of three generation superstring standard--like models in the free fermionic formulation. I discuss some phenomenological properties of these models. In particular these models suggest an explanation for the top quark mass hierarchy. A numerical estimate yielded $m_t\sim175-180~GeV$. The general texture of fermion mass matrices was obtained from analysis of nonrenormalizable terms up to order $N=8$.I argue that the realistic features of these models are due to the underlying $Z_2\times Z_2$ orbi…
We introduce and discuss two inter-related mechanisms operative in the electroweak sector of the Standard Model at high energies. Higgsplosion, the first mechanism, occurs at some critical energy in the 25 to 10^3 TeV range, and leads to an exponentially growing decay rate of highly energetic particles into multiple Higgs bosons. We argue that this a well-controlled non-perturbative phenomenon in the Higgs-sector which involves the final state Higgs multiplicities n in the regime n λ>> 1 where λis the Higgs self-coupling. If this mechanism is realised in nature, the cross-sections for producin…
Compact stars consisting of fermions with arbitrary masses and interaction strengths are studied by solving the structure equation of general relativity, the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations. Scaling solutions are derived for a free and an interacting Fermi gas and tested by numerical calculations. We demonstrate that there is a unique mass-radius relation for compact stars made of free fermions which is independent of the fermion mass. For sufficiently strong interactions, the maximum stable mass of compact stars and its radius are controlled by the parameter of the interaction, both incr…
