Discrete stability extends the classical notion of stability to random elements in discrete spaces by defining a scaling operation in a randomised way: an integer is transformed into the corresponding binomial distribution. Similarly defining the scaling operation as thinning of counting measures we characterise the corresponding discrete stability property of point processes. It is shown that these processes are exactly Cox (doubly stochastic Poisson) processes with strictly stable random intensity measures. We give spectral and LePage representations for general strictly stable random measures without assuming their independent scattering. As a consequence, spectral representations are obtained for the probability generating functional and void probabilities of discrete stable processes. An alternative cluster representation for such processes is also derived using the so-called Sibuya point processes, which constitute a new family of purely random point processes. The obtained results are then applied to explore stable random elements in discrete semigroups, where the scaling is defined by means of thinning of a point process on the basis of the semigroup. Particular examples include discrete stable vectors that generalise discrete stable random variables and the family of natural numbers with the multiplication operation, where the primes form the basis.
We provide some sharp criteria for studying the ergodicity and asymptotic stability of general Feller semigroups on Polish metric spaces. As application, the 2D Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate stochastic forcing will be simply revisited.
Under the assumption that the infinite product of evolution process converges almost surely, the set of strong solutions are characterized by a compact space, which may be regarded as the set of possible initial states.
The stability and contraction properties of positive integral semigroups on Polish spaces are investigated. Our novel analysis is based on the extension of V-norm contraction methods, associated to functionally weighted Banach spaces for Markov semigroups, to positive semigroups. This methodology is applied to a general class of positive and possibly time-inhomogeneous bounded integral semigroups and their normalised versions. The spectral theorems that we develop are an extension of Perron-Frobenius and Krein-Rutman theorems for positive operators to a class of time-varying positive semigroup…
Given a power-bounded linear operator T in a Banach space and a probability F on the non-negative integers, one can form a `subordinated' operator S = \sum_k F(k) T^k. We obtain asymptotic properties of the subordinated discrete semigroup (S^n: n=1,2,...) under certain conditions on F. In particular, we study probabilities F with the property that S satisfies the Ritt resolvent condition whenever T is power-bounded. Examples and counterexamples of this property are discussed. The hypothesis of power-boundedness of T can sometimes be replaced by the weaker Kreiss resolvent condition.
Feynman-Kac semigroups appear in various areas of mathematics: non-linear filtering, large deviations theory, spectral analysis of Schrodinger operators among others. Their long time behavior provides important information, for example in terms of ground state energy of Schrodinger operators, or scaled cumulant generating function in large deviations theory. In this paper, we propose a simple and natural extension of the stability of Markov chains for these non-linear evolutions. As other classical ergodicity results, it relies on two assumptions: a Lyapunov condition that induces some compact…
The paper deals with the long-term behavior of positive operator semigroups on spaces of bounded functions and of signed measures, which have applications to parabolic equations with unbounded coefficients and to stochastic analysis. The main results are a Tauberian type theorem characterizing the convergence to equilibrium of strongly Feller semigroups and a generalization of a classical convergence theorem of Doob. None of these results requires any kind of time regularity of the semigroup.
We study the Classical Probability analogue of the dilations of a quantum dynamical semigroup in Quantum Probability. Given a (not necessarily homogeneous) Markov chain in discrete time in a finite state space E, we introduce a second system, an environment, and a deterministic invertible time-homogeneous global evolution of the system E with this environment such that the original Markov evolution of E can be realized by a proper choice of the initial random state of the environment. We also compare this dilations with the dilations of a quantum dynamical semigroup in Quantum Probability: giv…
We consider stochastic differential systems driven by a Brownian motion and a Poisson point measure where the intensity measure of jumps depends on the solution. This behavior is natural for several physical models (such as Boltzmann equation, piecewise deterministic Markov processes, etc). First, we give sufficient conditions guaranteeing that the semigroup associated with such an equation preserves regularity by mapping the space of the of k-times differentiable bounded functions into itself. Furthermore, we give an explicit estimate of the operator norm. This is the key-ingredient in a quan…
We investigate the relation between the e-property and the eventual continuity, or called the asymptotic equicontinuity, which is a generalization of the e-property. We prove that, for any discrete-time or strongly continuous continuous-time eventually continuous Markov-Feller semigroup with an ergodic measure, if the interior of the support of the ergodic measure is nonempty, then the e-property is satisfied on the interior of the support. In particular, it implies that, restricted on the support of each ergodic measure, the e-property and the eventual continuity are equivalent for the discre…
Let $U\subset K$ be an open and dense subset of a compact metric space and let $\{Φ_t\}_{t\ge0}$ be a Markov semigroup on the space of bounded Borel measurable functions on $U$ with the strong Feller property. Suppose that for each $x\in\bdu$ there exists a barrier $h\in C(K)$ at $x$ such that $Φ_t(h)\ge h$ for all $t\ge0$. Suppose also that every real-valued $g\in C(K)$ with $Φ_t(g)\ge g$ for all $t\ge0$ and which attains its global maximum at a point inside $U$ is constant. Then for each $f\in C(K)$ there exists the uniform limit $F=\lim_{t\to\infty}Φ_t(f)$. Moreover $F$ is continuous on $K$…
Given a finite state space E, we build a universal dilation for all possible discrete time Markov chains on E, homogeneous or not: we introduce a second system (an ``environment'') and a deterministic invertible time-homogeneous global evolution of the system E with this environment such that any Markov evolution of E can be realized by a proper choice of the initial (random) state of the environment, which therefore determines the transition probabilities of the system. We also compare this dilation with the quantum dilations of a Quantum Dynamical Semigroup: given a Classical Markov Semigrou…
Our aim is to unify and extend the large deviation upper and lower bounds for the occupation times of a Markov process with $L_2$ semigroups under minimal conditions on the state space and the process trajectories; for example, no strong Markov property is needed. The methods used here apply in both continuous and discrete time. We present the proofs for continuous time only because of the inherent technical difficulties in that situation; the proofs can be adapted for discrete time in a straightforward manner.
We show that certain functional inequalities, e.g.\ Nash-type and Poincaré-type inequalities, for infinitesimal generators of $C_0$ semigroups are preserved under subordination in the sense of Bochner. Our result improves \cite[Theorem 1.3]{BM} by A.\ Bendikov and P.\ Maheux for fractional powers, and it also holds for non-symmetric settings. As an application, we will derive hypercontractivity, supercontractivity and ultracontractivity of subordinate semigroups.
We formulate a criterion for the existence of an invariant measure for a Feller semigroup defined on a metric space with the e-property for bounded continuous functions and use it to prove the asymptotic stability of a semigroup satisfying a lower bound condition. Our results complement those of A. Lasota and J. A. Yorke in proper metric spaces and of T. Szarek in Polish spaces.

The master equation for a probability density function (pdf) driven by Lévy noise, if conditioned to conform with the principle of detailed balance, admits a transformation to a contractive strongly continuous semigroup dynamics. Given a priori a functional form of the semigroup potential, we address the ground-state reconstruction problem for generic Lévy-stable semigroups, for {\em all} values of the stability index $μ\in (0,2)$. That is known to resolve an invariant pdf for confined Lévy flights (e.g. the former jump-type process). Jeopardies of the procedure are discussed, with a focus on:…
In this paper, when a given symmetric Markov process X satisfies the stability of global heat kernel two-sided (upper) estimates by Markov perturbations, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on the stability of global two-sided (upper) estimates for fundamental solution of Feynman-Kac semigroup of X. As a corollary, under the same assumptions, a weak type global two-sided (upper) estimates holds for the fundamental solution of Feynman-Kac semigroup with (extended) Kato class conditions for measures. This generalizes all known results on the stability of global integral kernel estimates…
The first aim of this paper is to introduce a class of Markov chains on $\mathbb{Z}_+$ which are discrete self-similar in the sense that their semigroups satisfy an invariance property expressed in terms of a discrete random dilation operator. After showing that this latter property requires the chains to be upward skip-free, we first establish a gateway relation, a concept introduced in [26], between the semigroup of such chains and the one of spectrally negative self-similar Markov processes on $\mathbb{R}_+$. As a by-product, we prove that each of these Markov chains, after an appropriate s…
