Given a power-bounded linear operator T in a Banach space and a probability F on the non-negative integers, one can form a `subordinated' operator S = \sum_k F(k) T^k. We obtain asymptotic properties of the subordinated discrete semigroup (S^n: n=1,2,...) under certain conditions on F. In particular, we study probabilities F with the property that S satisfies the Ritt resolvent condition whenever T is power-bounded. Examples and counterexamples of this property are discussed. The hypothesis of power-boundedness of T can sometimes be replaced by the weaker Kreiss resolvent condition.
Using functional calculi theory, we obtain several estimates for $\|ψ(A)g(A)\|$, where $ψ$ is a Bernstein function, $g$ is a bounded completely monotone function and $-A$ is the generator of a holomorphic $C_0$-semigroup on a Banach space, bounded on $[0,\infty)$. Such estimates are of value, in particular, in approximation theory of operator semigroups. As a corollary, we obtain a new proof of the fact that $-ψ(A)$ generates a holomorphic semigroup whenever $-A$ does, established recently in [8] by a different approach.
We prove that if a super-Poincaré inequality is satisfied by an infinitesimal generator $-A$ of a symmetric contracting semigroup then it implies a corresponding super-Poincaré inequality for $-g(A)$ with any Bernstein function $g$. We also study the converse statement. We deduce similar results for the Nash-type inequality. Our results applied to fractional powers of $A$ and to $\log(I+A)$ and thus generalize some results of Biroli and Maheux, and Wang 2007. We provide several examples.
A suitable notion of hypercontractivity for a nonlinear semigroup $\{T_t\}$ is shown to imply Gagliardo--Nirenberg inequalities for its generator $H$, provided a subhomogeneity property holds for the energy functional $(u,Hu)$. We use this fact to prove that, for semigroups generated by operators of $p$--Laplacian--type, hypercontractivity implies ultracontractivity. We then introduce the notion of subordinated nonlinear semigroups when the corresponding Bernstein function is $f(x)=x^α$, and write down an explicit formula for the associated generator. It is shown that, in certain cases, hyperc…
In this paper we study the robustness of strong stability of a discrete semigroup on a Hilbert space under bounded finite rank perturbations. As the main result we characterize classes of perturbations preserving the strong stability of the semigroup.
The main result is a Paley's theory for lacunary Fourier series using semigroup-BMO and $H^1$ spaces. This interpretation allows an extension of Paley's theory to general discrete groups, complementing the work of Rudin for abelian groups with a total order, and Lust-Piquard and Pisier's work for lacunary Fourier series with operator-valued coefficients.
In this paper we prove weighted $\ell^p$-inequalities for variation and oscillation operators defined by semigroups of operators associated with discrete Jacobi operators. Also, we establish that certain maximal operators involving sums of differences of discrete Jacobi semigroups are bounded on weighted $\ell^p$-spaces. $\ell^p$-boundedness properties for the considered operators provide information about the convergence of the semigroup of operators defining them.
We show that noncommutative analog of additive functional equation has Hyers-Ulam stability on amenable discrete quantum (semi)groups. This generalizes an old classical result.
This paper considers discrete and continuous semigroups of (weighted) composition operators on the Fock space. For discrete semigroups consisting of powers of a single operator, the asymptotic behaviour of the semigroups is analysed. For continuous semigroups and groups, a full classification of possible semigroups is given, and the generator is calculated.
Let $ω$ be a weight on a right cancellative semigroup $S$. Let $\|\cdot\|_ω$ be the weighted norm on the weighted discrete semigroup algebra $\ell^1(S, ω)$. In this paper, we prove that the weight $ω$ satisfies F-property if and only if the operator norm $\| \cdot \|_{ωop}$ of $\| \cdot \|_ω$ is exactly equal to another weighted norm $\| \cdot \|_{\widetildeω_1}$ [Theorem 2.5 ($iii$)]. Though its proof is elementary, the result is unexpectedly surprising. In particular, $\| \cdot \|_{1 op}$ is same as $\| \cdot \|_1$ on $\ell^1(S)$. Moreover, various examples are discussed to understand the re…
In this paper we study the behavior of some harmonic analysis operators associated with the discrete Laplacian $Δ_d$ in discrete Hardy spaces $\mathcal H^p(\mathbb Z)$. We prove that the maximal operator and the Littlewood-Paley $g$ function defined by the semigroup generated by $Δ_d$ are bounded from $\mathcal H^p(\mathbb Z)$ into $\ell^p(\mathbb Z)$, $0<p\leq 1$. Also, we establish that every $Δ_d$-spectral multiplier of Laplace transform type is a bounded operator from $\mathcal H^p(\mathbb Z)$ into itself, for every $0<p\leq 1$.
In this paper we characterize the discrete Hölder spaces by means of the heat and Poisson semigroups associated to the discrete Laplacian. These characterizations allow us to get regularity properties of fractional powers of the discrete Laplacian and the Bessel potentials along these spaces and also in the discrete Zygmund spaces in a more direct way than using the pointwise definition of the spaces. To obtain our results, it has been crucial to get boundedness properties of the heat and Poisson kernels and their derivatives in both space and time variables. We believe that these estimates ar…
We study a nonlinear semigroup associated to a nonexpansive mapping on a Hadamard space and establish its weak convergence to a fixed point. A discrete-time counterpart of such a semigroup, the proximal point algorithm, turns out to have the same asymptotic behavior. This complements several results in the literature -- both classical and more recent ones. As an application, we obtain a new approach to heat flows in singular spaces for discrete, as well as continuous times.
Stone-$\breve{C}$ech compactifications derived from a discrete semigroup $S$ can be considered as the spectrum of the algebra $\mathcal{B}(S)$ or as a collection of ultrafilters on $S$. What is certain and indisputable is the fact that filters play an important role in the study of Stone-$\breve{C}$ech compactifications derived from a discrete semigroup. It seems that filters can play a role in the study of general semigroup compactifications too. In the present paper, first we review the characterizations of semigroup compactifications in terms of filters and then extend some of the results i…
The first aim of this paper is to introduce a class of Markov chains on $\mathbb{Z}_+$ which are discrete self-similar in the sense that their semigroups satisfy an invariance property expressed in terms of a discrete random dilation operator. After showing that this latter property requires the chains to be upward skip-free, we first establish a gateway relation, a concept introduced in [26], between the semigroup of such chains and the one of spectrally negative self-similar Markov processes on $\mathbb{R}_+$. As a by-product, we prove that each of these Markov chains, after an appropriate s…
A general approach to transference principles for discrete and continuous operator (semi)groups is described. This allows to recover the classical transference results of Calderón, Coifman and Weiss and of Berkson, Gillespie and Muhly and the more recent one of the author. The method is applied to derive a new transference principle for (discrete and continuous) operator semigroups that need not be groups. As an application, functional calculus estimates for bounded operators with at most polynomially growing powers are derived, culminating in a new proof of classical results by Peller from 19…
Given a probability measure $μ$ on the real line, there exists a semigroup $μ_t$ with real parameter $t>1$ which interpolates the discrete semigroup of measures $μ_n$ obtained by iterating its free convolution. It was shown in \cite{[BB2004]} that it is impossible that $μ_t$ has no mass in an interval whose endpoints are atoms. We extend this result to semigroups related to multiplicative free convolution. The proofs use subordination results.
We consider positive operator semigroups on ordered Banach spac\-es and study the relation of their long time behaviour to two different domination properties. First, we analyse under which conditions almost periodicity and mean ergodicity of a semigroup $\mathcal{T}$ are inherited by other semigroups which are asymptotically dominated by $\mathcal{T}$. Then, we consider semigroups whose orbits asymptotically dominate a positive vector and show that this assumption is often sufficient to conclude strong convergence of the semigroup as time tends to infinity. Our theorems are applicable to time…
We prove that if an infinite, discrete semigroup has the property that every right syndetic set is left syndetic, then the semigroup has a left invariant mean. We prove that the weak*-closed convex hull of the two-sided translates of every bounded function on an infinite discrete semigroup contains a constant function. Our proofs use the algebraic properties of the Stone-Cech compactification.
We prove a Weiss conjecture on $β$-admissibility of control and observation operators for discrete and continuous $γ$-hypercontractive semigroups of operators, by representing them in terms of shifts on weighted Bergman spaces and using a reproducing kernel thesis for Hankel operators. Particular attention is paid to the case $γ=2$, which corresponds to the unweighted Bergman shift.
Given a positive, irreducible and bounded C_0-semigroup on a Banach lattice with order continuous norm, we prove that the peripheral point spectrum of its generator is trivial whenever one of its operators dominates a non-trivial compact or kernel operator. For a discrete semigroup, i.e. for powers of a single operator T, we show that the point spectrum of some power T^k intersects the unit circle at most in 1. As a consequence, we obtain a sufficient condition for strong convergence of the C_0-semigroup and for a subsequence of the powers of T, respectively.
We propose the new generalization of linear stationary dynamical systems with discrete time $t\in\mathbb{Z}$ to the case $t\in\nspace{Z}{N}$. The dynamics of such a system can be reproduced by means of its associated multiparametric Lax-Phillips semigroup. We define multiparametric passive, and conservative scattering systems and interpret them in terms of operator colligations, of the associated semigroup and of "energetic" relations for system data. We prove the Agler's type theorem describing the class of holomorphic operator-valued functions on the polydisc $\nspace{D}{N}$ that are the tra…
This paper is based on three hours of lectures given by the first author in the "Focus Program on Analytic Function Spaces and their Applications" July 1 -- December 31, 2021, organized by the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences. The goal of this paper is to give an introduction to the properties of discrete and continuous $C_0$-semigroups of (weighted) composition operators on various spaces of analytic functions.
If $(T_t)$ is a semigroup of Markov operators on an $L^1$-space that admits a non-trivial lower bound, then a well-known theorem of Lasota and Yorke asserts that the semigroup is strongly convergent as $t \to \infty$. In this article we generalise and improve this result in several respects. First, we give a new and very simple proof for the fact that the same conclusion also holds if the semigroup is merely assumed to be bounded instead of Markov. As a main result we then prove a version of this theorem for semigroups which only admit certain individual lower bounds. Moreover, we generalise a…
We show that any bounded analytic semigroup on $L^p$ (with $1<p<\infty$) whose negative generator admits a bounded $H^{\infty}$ functional calculus with respect to some angle $< π/2$ can be dilated into a bounded analytic semigroup $(R_t)_{t\geq 0}$ on a bigger $L^p$-space in such a way that $R_t$ is a positive contraction for any $t$. We also establish a discrete analogue for Ritt operators and consider the case when $L^p$-spaces are replaced by more general Banach spaces. In connection with these functional calculus issues, we study isometric dilations of bounded continuous representations o…
We show that the analyticity of semigroups $(T_t)_{t \geq 0}$ of (not necessarily positive) selfadjoint contractive Fourier multipliers on $\mathrm{L}^p$-spaces of any abelian locally compact group is preserved by the tensorisation of the identity operator $\mathrm{Id}_X$ of a Banach space $X$ for a large class of K-convex Banach spaces, answering partially a conjecture of Pisier. The result is even new for semigroups of Fourier multipliers acting on $\mathrm{L}^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$. The proof relies on the use of noncommutative Banach spaces and we give a more general result for semigroups of Fou…
We investigate an infinite, linear system of ordinary differential equations that models the evolution of fragmenting clusters. We assume that each cluster is composed of identical units (monomers) and we allow mass to be lost, gained or conserved during each fragmentation event. By formulating the initial-value problem for the system as an abstract Cauchy problem (ACP), posed in an appropriate weighted $\ell^1$ space, and then applying perturbation results from the theory of operator semigroups, we prove the existence and uniqueness of physically relevant, classical solutions for a wide class…
We revisit Sz.-Nagy's criteria for similarity of Hilbert space bounded linear operators to isometries or unitaries and present new ones. We also discuss counterparts of the Dixmier-Day theorem concerning bounded representations of amenable groups and semigroups. We highlight the role of Folner sets in similarity problems in both settings of unimodular, $σ$-compact, amenable groups and in discrete semigroups possessing the Strong Folner condition (SFC).
