Austere submanifolds in Euclidean space were introduced by Harvey and Lawson in connection with their study of calibrated geometries. The algebraic possibilities for second fundamental forms of 4-dimensional austere submanifolds were classified by Bryant, into three types which we label A, B, and C. In this paper, we show that type A submanifolds correspond exactly to real Kahler submanifolds, we construct new examples of such submanifolds in R^6 and R^10, and we obtain classification results on submanifolds of types B and C with maximal second fundamental forms.
Austere submanifolds and arid submanifolds constitute respectively two different classes of minimal submanifolds in finite dimensional Riemannian manifolds. In this paper we introduce these two notions into a class of proper Fredholm (PF) submanifolds in Hilbert spaces, discuss their relation and show examples of infinite dimensional austere PF submanifolds and arid PF submanifolds in Hilbert spaces. We also mention a classification problem of minimal orbits in hyperpolar PF actions on Hilbert spaces.
Austere submanifolds of Euclidean space were introduced in 1982 by Harvey and Lawson in their foundational work on calibrated geometries. In general, the austerity condition is much stronger than minimality since it express that the nonzero eigenvalues of the shape operator of the submanifold appear in opposite pairs for any normal vector at any point. Thereafter, the challenging task of finding non-trivial explicit examples, other than minimal immersions of Kaehler manifolds, only turned out submanifolds of rank two, and these are of limited interest in the sense that in this special situatio…
A twisted-austere $k$-fold $(M, μ)$ in $\mathbb R^n$ consists of a $k$-dimensional submanifold $M$ of $\mathbb R^n$ together with a closed $1$-form $μ$ on $M$ such that the `twisted conormal bundle' $N^* M + μ$ is a special Lagrangian submanifold of $\mathbb C^n$. The 1-form $μ$ and the second fundamental form of $M$ must satisfy a particular system of coupled nonlinear second order PDE. We first review these twisted-austere conditions and give an explicit example. Then we focus on twisted-austere 3-folds, giving a geometric description of all solutions when the base $M$ is a cylinder and when…
It is known that an isometric action of a Lie group on a compact symmetric space gives rise to a proper Fredholm action of a path group on a path space via the gauge transformations. In this paper, supposing that the isometric action is a Hermann action (i.e. an isometric action of a symmetric subgroup of the isometry group) we give an explicit formula for the principal curvatures of orbits of the path group action and study the condition for those orbits to be austere, that is, the set of principal curvatures in the direction of each normal vector is invariant under the multiplication by minu…
We study submanifolds whose principal curvatures, counted with multiplicities, do not depend on the normal direction. Such submanifolds, which we briefly call CPC submanifolds, are always austere, hence minimal, and have constant principal curvatures. Well-known classes of examples include totally geodesic submanifolds, homogeneous austere hypersurfaces, and singular orbits of cohomogeneity one actions. The main purpose of this article is to present a systematic approach to the construction and classification of homogeneous submanifolds whose principal curvatures are independent of the normal …
Motivated by spectral asymptotics for orbital integrals in a relative trace formula, we generalize a number of geometric properties of geodesics in the hyperbolic plane, to maximal flat submanifolds of symmetric spaces of non-compact type.
In 1995, C.-L. Terng associated to each hyperpolar action on a compact symmetric space, a hyperpolar proper Fredholm (PF) action on a Hilbert space. This is a group action by an infinite dimensional path group and it acts on a Hilbert space via the gauge transformations. Those two hyperpolar actions are related through an equivariant Riemannian submersion called the parallel transport map and they have close relations to the infinite dimensional symmetric spaces called affine Kac-Moody symmetric spaces. In this paper we define a linear isomorphism between Hilbert spaces and show that it is equ…
We prove an isoperimetric-type inequality for maximal, spacelike submanifold in the Minkowski space. The argument is based on the recent work of Brendle.
We classify maximal totally geodesic submanifolds in exceptional symmetric spaces up to isometry. Moreover, we introduce an invariant for certain totally geodesic embeddings of semisimple symmetric spaces, which we call the Dynkin index. We prove a result analogous to the index conjecture: for every irreducible symmetric space of non-compact type, there exists a totally geodesic submanifold which is of minimal codimension and whose non-flat irreducible factors have Dynkin index equal to one.
Let $X=G/K$ be a higher rank symmetric space of non-compact type, where $G$ is the connected component of the isometry group of $X$. We define the splitting rank of $X$, denoted by $\text{srk}(X)$, to be the maximal dimension of a totally geodesic submanifold $Y\subset X$ which splits off an isometric $\mathbb R$-factor. We compute explicitly the splitting rank for each irreducible symmetric space. For an arbitrary (not necessarily irreducible) symmetric space, we show that the comparison map $η:H^{*}_{c,b}(G,\mathbb{R})\rightarrow H^{*}_c(G,\mathbb{R})$ is surjective in degrees $*\geq \text{s…
