This article reviews the current works on ultra-compact double-degenerate binaries in the presence of magnetic interaction, in particular, unipolar induction. The orbital dynamics and evolution of compact white-dwarf pairs are discussed in detail. Models and predictions of electron cyclotron masers from unipolar-inductor compact binaries and unipolar-inductor white-dwarf planetary systems are presented. Einstein-Laub effects in compact binaries are briefly discussed.
The formation of ultra-compact X-ray binaries (UCXBs) has not been well understood. Previous works show that ultra-short orbital periods ($<1$ hr) may be reached through mass transfer driven by magnetic braking in normal low/intermediate-mass X-ray binaries (L/IMXBs) only for an extremely small range of initial binary parameters, which makes it difficult to account for the rather large population of UCXBs. In this paper we report the calculated results on mass transfer processes in L/IMXBs with a circum-binary disk. We show that when the orbital angular momentum loss due to a circum-binary dis…
The ultracompact low-mass X-ray binary 4U 0513-40 in the globular cluster NGC1851 exhibits large amplitude X-ray flux variations with spectral changes from low/hard to high/soft states which have not been reported previously in other ultracompact X-ray binaries. Using BeppoSAX, CHANDRA and XMM Newton archival data together with recent INTEGRAL observations, we reveal a clear sinusoidal periodic signal with a period of ~17 minutes when the source is in a typical high/soft state with a dominant soft thermal component. The periodicity disappears when the source is in a low/hard state and the ther…
We present a detailed time-resolved photometric study of the ultra-compact X-ray binary candidate 4U 1812-12. The multicolor light curves obtained with HiPERCAM on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias show an aprox 114 min modulation similar to a superhump. Under this interpretation, this period should lie very close to the orbital period of the system. Contrary to what its other observational properties suggest (namely, persistent dim luminosity, low optical-to-X-ray flux ratio and lack of hydrogen features in the optical spectrum), this implies that 4U1812-12 is most likely not an ultra-compa…
Milli-second pulsars with highly stable periods can be considered as very precise clocks and can be used for pulsar timing array (PTA) which attempts to detect nanoheltz gravitational waves (GWs) directly. Main sources of nanoheltz GWs are supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries which have sub-pc-scale orbits. On the other hand, a SMBH binary which is in an earlier phase and has pc-scale orbit emits ultra-low-frequency ($\lesssim 10^{-9}\,\mathrm{Hz}$) GWs cannot be detected with the conventional methodology of PTA. Such binaries tend to obtain high eccentricity, possibly $\sim 0.9$. In this p…
Recently, many gravitational wave events from compact binary mergers have been detected by LIGO. Determining the final mass and spin of the remnant black holes (RBHs) is a fundamental issue and is also important in astrophysics. In this paper, unified models for predicting the final mass and spin of the RBHs from compact binary mergers is proposed. The models achieve a good accuracy within the parameter range of interest. In addition, the rotational energy of the RBHs is also studied which is relevant to the electromagnetic counterparts of the mergers. It is found the distribution of the rotat…
In the last decade, enormous progress has been achieved in the understanding of the various facets of coalescing double neutron star and neutron black hole binary systems. One hopes that the mergers of such compact binaries can be routinely detected with the advanced versions of the ground-based gravitational wave detector facilities, maybe as early as in 2016. From the theoretical side, there has also been mounting evidence that compact binary mergers could be major sources of heavy elements and these ideas have gained recent observational support from the detection of an event that has been …
In this article, we introduce a de-sitter model in favor of compact stars in low-mass X-ray binary. Here, we merge the presence of the cosmological constant on a small scale to discussion the stellar structure and conclude that this doping is very well suitable with the familiar physical mode of the low-mass X-ray binary compact stars. We calculate the probable radii, compactness (u) and surface red-shift (Zs) of six compact stars in low-mass X-ray binaries namely Cyg X-2, V395 Carinae/2S 0921-630, XTE J2123-058, X1822-371 (V691 CrA), 4U 1820-30 and GR Mus (XB 1254-690). We also offer possible…
The advent of Multi-Messenger Astronomy has allowed for new types of source searches within the neutrino community. We present the results of the first search for GeV astrophysical neutrinos emitted from Compact Binary Mergers, i.e. binary black hole or binary neutron star mergers, detected by the LIGO and Virgo interferometers. We introduce a new approach that lowers the energy threshold of IceCube from roughly 10 GeV to <1 GeV. This method uses an innovative event selection of GeV neutrino events in IceCube and searches for a statistically significant increase in the amount of GeV-like event…
The mass and spin distributions of compact binary gravitational-wave sources are currently uncertain due to complicated astrophysics involved in their formation. Multiple sub-populations of compact binaries representing different evolutionary scenarios may be present among sources detected by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. In addition to hierarchical modelling, unmodelled methods can aid in determining the number of sub-populations and their properties. In this paper, we apply Gaussian mixture model clustering to 1000 simulated gravitational-wave compact binary sources from a mixture of fiv…
As we enter the era of gravitational wave astronomy, we are beginning to collect observations which will enable us to explore aspects of astrophysics of massive stellar binaries which were previously beyond reach. In this paper we describe COMPAS (Compact Object Mergers: Population Astrophysics and Statistics), a new platform to allow us to deepen our understanding of isolated binary evolution and the formation of gravitational-wave sources. We describe the computational challenges associated with their exploration, and present preliminary results on overcoming them using Gaussian process regr…
Using neural networks, we integrate the ability to account for Doppler smearing due to a pulsar's orbital motion with the pulsar population synthesis package \psrpoppy\ to develop accurate modeling of the observed binary pulsar population. As a first application, we show that binary neutron star systems where the two components have highly unequal mass are, on average, easier to detect than systems which are symmetric in mass. We then investigate the population of ultra-compact ($1.5 \, {\rm min} \leq P_{\rm b} \leq 15\,\rm min$) neutron star--white dwarf (NS--WD) and double neutron star (DNS)…
The presence and detectability of coherent radio emission from compact binary mergers (containing at least one neutron star) remains poorly constrained due to large uncertainties in the models. These compact binary mergers may initially be detected as Short Gamma-ray Bursts (SGRBs) or via their gravitational wave emission. Several radio facilities have developed rapid response modes enabling them to trigger on these events and search for this emission. For this paper, we constrain this coherent radio emission using the deepest available constraints for GRB 150424A, which were obtained via a tr…
The maximum mass of a neutron star has important implications across multiple research fields, including astrophysics, nuclear physics and gravitational wave astronomy. Compact binary millisecond pulsars (with orbital periods shorter than about a day) are a rapidly-growing pulsar population, and provide a good opportunity to search for the most massive neutron stars. Applying a new method to measure the velocity of both sides of the companion star, we previously found that the compact binary millisecond pulsar PSR J2215+5135 hosts one of the most massive neutron stars known to date, with a mas…
Well-characterized binary systems will provide valuable opportunities to study the conditions that are necessary for the onset of both auroral and non-auroral magnetospheric radio emission in the ultracool dwarf regime. We present new detections of non-auroral "quiescent" radio emission at 4-8 GHz of the three ultracool dwarf binary systems GJ 564 BC, LP 415-20, and 2MASS J21402931+1625183. We also tentatively detect a highly circularly polarized pulse at 4-6 GHz that may indicate aurorae from GJ 564 BC. Finally, we show that the brightest binary ultracool dwarf systems may be more luminous th…
Ultra-stripped supernovae are different from other terminal explosions of massive stars, as they show little or no ejecta from the actual supernova event. They are thought to occur in massive binary systems after the exploding star has lost its surface through interactions with its companion. Such supernovae produce little to no kick, leading to the formation of a neutron star without loss of the binary companion, which itself may also evolve into another neutron star. Here we show that a recently discovered high-mass X-ray binary, CPD -29 2176 (CD -29 5159; SGR 0755-2933), has an evolutionary…
We propose a novel method to test the binary black hole (BBH) nature of compact binaries detectable by gravitational wave (GW) interferometers and hence constrain the parameter space of other exotic compact objects. The spirit of the test lies in the "no-hair" conjecture for black holes where all properties of a black hole are characterised by the mass and the spin of the black hole. The method relies on observationally measuring the quadrupole moments of the compact binary constituents induced due to their spins. If the compact object is a Kerr black hole (BH), its quadrupole moment is expres…
This paper reviews the current understanding of double neutron star and neutron star black hole binaries. It addresses mainly (nuclear) astrophysics aspects of compact binary mergers and thus complements recent reviews that have emphasized the numerical relativity viewpoint. In particular, the paper discusses different channels to release neutron-rich matter into the host galaxy, connections between compact binary mergers and short Gamma-ray bursts and accompanying electromagnetic signals.
Horizonless spacetimes describing spatially regular ultra-compact objects which, like black-hole spacetimes, possess closed null circular geodesics (light rings) have recently attracted much attention from physicists and mathematicians. In the present paper we raise the following physically intriguing question: How compact is an ultra-compact object? Using analytical techniques, we prove that ultra-compact isotropic matter configurations with light rings are characterized by the dimensionless lower bound $\text{max}_r\{2m(r)/r\}>7/12$ on their global compactness parameter.
We investigate light-curve and spectral properties of ultra-stripped core-collapse supernovae. Ultra-stripped supernovae are the explosions of heavily stripped massive stars which lost their envelopes via binary interactions with a compact companion star. They eject only ~ 0.1 Msun and may be the main way to form double neutron-star systems which eventually merge emitting strong gravitational waves. We follow the evolution of an ultra-stripped supernova progenitor until iron core collapse and perform explosive nucleosynthesis calculations. We then synthesize light curves and spectra of ultra-s…
We study explosion characteristics of ultra-stripped supernovae (SNe), which are candidates of SNe generating binary neutron stars (NSs). As a first step, we perform stellar evolutionary simulations of bare carbon-oxygen cores of mass from 1.45 to 2.0 $M_\odot$ until the iron cores become unstable and start collapsing. We then perform axisymmetric hydrodynamics simulations with spectral neutrino transport using these stellar evolution outcomes as initial conditions. All models exhibit successful explosions driven by neutrino heating. The diagnostic explosion energy, ejecta mass, Ni mass, and N…
White dwarfs typically have masses in a narrow range centered at about 0.6 solar masses (Msun). Only a few ultra-massive white dwarfs (M>1.2 Msun) are known. Those in binary systems are of particular interest because a small amount of accreted mass could drive them above the Chandrasekhar limit, beyond which they become gravitationally unstable. Using data from the XMM-Newton satellite, we show that the X-ray pulsator RX J0648.0-4418 is a white dwarf with mass > 1.2 Msun, based only on dynamical measurements. This ultra-massive white dwarf in a post-common envelope binary with a hot subdwarf c…
The recent advanced LIGO detections of gravitational waves from merging binary black holes enhance the prospect of exploring binary evolution via gravitational-wave observations of a population of compact-object binaries. In the face of uncertainty about binary formation models, model-independent inference provides an appealing alternative to comparisons between observed and modelled populations. We describe a procedure for clustering in the multi-dimensional parameter space of observations that are subject to significant measurement errors. We apply this procedure to a mock data set of popula…
Can one distinguish a binary black hole undergoing a merger from a binary neutron star if the individual compact companions have masses that fall inside the so-called mass gap of $3-5\ M_\odot$? For neutron stars, achieving such masses typically requires extreme compactness and in this work we present initial data and evolutions of binary neutron stars initially in quasiequilibrium circular orbits having a compactness $C=0.336$. These are the most compact, nonvacuum, quasiequilibrium binary objects that have been constructed and evolved to date, including boson stars. The compactness achieved …
We performed population synthesis simulations of Population III binary stars with Maxwellian kick velocity distribution when MGCOs (Mass Gap Compact Objects with mass 2--5$\,M_{\odot}$) are formed. We found that for eight kick velocity dispersion models of $σ_{\rm k}=0$--$500$ km/s, the mean mass of black hole (BH)-MGCO binary is $\sim (30 \,M_\odot,\,2.6 \,M_\odot)$. In numerical data of our simulations, we found the existence of BH-MGCO binary with mass $(22.9 \,M_\odot,\,2.5 \,M_\odot)$ which looks like GW190814.
The mass transfer in binaries with massive donors and compact companions, when the donors rapidly evolve after their main sequence, is one of the dominant formation channels of merging double stellar-mass black hole binaries. This mass transfer was previously postulated to be unstable and was expected to lead to a common envelope event. The common envelope event then would end with either double black hole formation, or with the merger of the two stars. We re-visit the stability of this mass transfer, and find that for a large range of the binary orbital separations this mass transfer is stabl…
We present a short overview of the formation and evolution of ultra-compact binaries. They are relevant to a surprisingly large number of astrophysical phenomena (binary interactions, mass transfer stability, explosive phenomena such as type Ia supernovae and gravitational waves).
Compact binary systems coalesce over time due to the radiation of gravitational waves, following the field equations of general relativity. Conservation of energy and angular momentum gives a mathematical description for the evolution of separation between the orbiting objects and eccentricity ($e$) of the orbit. We develop an improved analytical solution to the coalescence time for a circular binary system with an arbitrary semi-major axis, to the first post-Newtonian (1PN) accuracy. The results from the quadruple approximation and 1PN approximation are compared for a circular orbit ($e=0$).
Compact neutron star binary systems are produced from binary massive stars through stellar evolution involving up to two supernova explosions. The final stages in the formation of these systems have not been directly observed. We report the discovery of iPTF 14gqr (SN 2014ft), a Type Ic supernova with a fast evolving light curve indicating an extremely low ejecta mass ($\approx 0.2$ solar masses) and low kinetic energy ($\approx 2 \times 10^{50}$ ergs). Early photometry and spectroscopy reveal evidence of shock cooling of an extended He-rich envelope, likely ejected in an intense pre-explosion…
Recently, a single-line spectroscopic binary, LTD064402+245919, has been discovered by Yang et al. Using data from LAMOST and ZTF, the unseen companion is estimated to have a mass of 1-3 $M_{\odot}$, orbiting a subgiant with orbital period of 14.50 days, making it a good compact binary candidate without X-ray emission. However, new light curves from ZTF and ASAS-SN, have shown the depth of one dip increases towards a bluer wavelength, indicating LTD064402+245919 is more likely to be a subgiant with a red star. Using both Wilson-Devinney code and Phoebe, the derived $T_{eff}$ of secondary is ab…
Using archival RXTE data, we show that the ultracompact X-ray binary in NGC 1851 exhibits large amplitude X-ray flux varations of more than a factor of 10 on timescales of days to weeks and undergoes sustained periods of months where the time-averaged luminosty varies by factors of two. Variations of this magnitude and timescale have not been reported previously in other ultracompact X-ray binaries. Mass transfer in ultracompact binaries is thought to be driven by gravitational radiation and the predicted transfer rates are so high that the disks of ultracompact binaries with orbits as short a…
The parameterized post-Einsteinian framework modifies inspiral waveform models to incorporate effects beyond General Relativity. We extend the existing model into the merger-ringdown regime. The modification introduced here adds a single degree of freedom that corresponds to a change in the binary coalescence time. Other merger properties remain as predicted by GR. We discuss parameter estimation with this model, and how it can be used to extract information from beyond-GR waveforms.
Binary black hole mergers are among the most violent events in the Universe, leading to extreme warping of spacetime and copious emission of gravitational radiation. Even though black holes are the most compact objects they are not necessarily the most efficient emitters of gravitational radiation in binary systems. The final black hole resulting from a binary black hole merger retains a significant fraction of the pre-merger orbital energy and angular momentum. A non-vacuum system can in principle shed more of this energy than a black hole merger of equivalent mass. We study these super-emitt…
Gravitational-wave parameter estimation for compact binary signals typically relies on sequential estimation of the properties of the detector Gaussian noise and of the binary parameters. This procedure assumes that the noise variance, expressed through its power spectral density, is perfectly known in advance. We assess the impact of this approximation on the estimated parameters by means of an analysis that simultaneously estimates the noise and compact binary parameters, thus allowing us to marginalize over uncertainty in the noise properties. We compare the traditional sequential estimatio…
X-ray binary systems are very popular objects for astrophysical investigations. Compact objects in these systems are neutron stars, white dwarfs and black holes. Neutron stars and white dwarfs can have intrinsic magnetic fields. There is well known, famous theorem about absence of intrinsic magnetic fields of black holes. But magnetic field can exist in the accretion disk around a black hole. We present here the real estimates of the magnetic field strength at the radius of innermost stable orbit in an accretion disk of stellar mass black holes.
SDSS J080710+485259 is the longest period outbursting ultracompact white dwarf binary. Its first ever detected superoutburst started in November of 2018 and lasted for a year, the longest detected so far for any short orbital period accreting white dwarf. Here we show that the superoutburst duration of SDSS J080710+485259 exceeds the 2 months viscous time of its accretion disk by a factor of about 5. Consequently it follows neither the empirical relation nor the theoretical relation between the orbital period and the superoutburst duration for AM CVn systems. Six months after the end of the su…
Binary millisecond pulsars (MSPs) are detached binary systems consisting of a MSP and a He white dwarf. If the initial orbital periods of binary MSPs are less than 0.3 day, they would evolve toward ultra-compact binary pulsars due to the rapid orbital shrinkage by the gravitational wave (GW) radiation. During the orbital decay, the MSP with an ellipticity would spin down by the GW radiation and the magnetic dipole radiation. Our calculations indicate that the angular momentum loss is dominated by the GW radiation when the ellipticities of the neutron stars (NSs) are in the range of $(1-50)\tim…
To enable detection and maximise the physics output of gravitational wave observations from compact binary systems, it is crucial the availability of accurate waveform models. The present work aims at giving an overview for non-experts of the (inspiral) waveforms used in the gravitational wave data analysis for compact binary coalescence. We first provide the essential elements of gravitational radiation physics within a simple Newtonian orbital dynamics and the linearized gravity theory, describing the adiabatic approximation applied to binary systems: the key element to construct the theoret…
We consider the scenario where dark matter (DM) is represented by an ultra-light classical scalar field performing coherent periodic oscillations. We point out that such DM perturbs the dynamics of binary systems either through its gravitational field or via direct coupling to ordinary matter. This perturbation gets resonantly amplified if the frequency of DM oscillations is close to a (half-)integer multiple of the orbital frequency of the system and leads to a secular variation of the orbital period. We suggest to use binary pulsars as probes of this scenario and estimate their sensitivity. …
On August 14, 2019, the LIGO and Virgo detectors observed GW190814, a gravitational-wave signal originating from the merger of a $\simeq 23 M_\odot$ black hole with a $\simeq 2.6 M_\odot$ compact object. GW190814's compact-binary source is atypical both in its highly asymmetric masses and in its lower-mass component lying between the heaviest known neutron star and lightest known black hole in a compact-object binary. If formed through isolated binary evolution, the mass of the secondary is indicative of its mass at birth. We examine the formation of such systems through isolated binary evolut…
We review the formation and evolution of compact binary stars consisting of white dwarfs (WDs), neutron stars (NSs), and black holes (BHs). Mergings of compact binary stars are expected to be the most important sources for the forthcoming gravitational-wave (GW) astronomy. In the first part of the review, we discuss observational manifestations of close binary stars with NS and/or black components and their merger rate, crucial points in the formation and evolution of compact stars in binary systems, including the treatment of the natal kicks which NSs and BHs acquire during the core collapse …
We present an improved search for binary compact-object mergers using a network of ground-based gravitational-wave detectors. We model a volumetric, isotropic source population and incorporate the resulting distribution over signal amplitude, time delay, and coalescence phase into the ranking of candidate events. We describe an improved modeling of the background distribution, and demonstrate incorporating a prior model of the binary mass distribution in the ranking of candidate events. We find a $\sim 10\%$ and $\sim 20\%$ increase in detection volume for simulated binary neutron star and neu…
In this paper, we report on the construction of a new and independent pipeline for analyzing the public data from the first observing run of advanced LIGO for mergers of compact binary systems. The pipeline incorporates different techniques and makes independent implementation choices in all its stages including the search design, the method to construct template banks, the automatic routines to detect bad data segments ("glitches") and to insulate good data from them, the procedure to account for the non-stationary nature of the detector noise, the signal-quality vetoes at the single-detector…
The Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (aLIGO) has detected direct signals of gravitational waves (GWs) from GW150914. The event was a merger of binary black holes whose masses are $36^{+5}_{-4}M_{\odot}$ and $29^{+4}_{-4}M_{\odot}$. Such binary systems are expected to be directly evolved from stellar binary systems or formed by dynamical interactions of black holes in dense stellar environments. Here we derive the binary black hole merger rate based on the nearby ultra-luminous X-ray source (ULX) luminosity function (LF) under the assumption that binary black holes e…
In this review article, we describe the role of holography in deciphering the physics of dense QCD matter, relevant for the description of compact stars and their binary mergers. We review the strengths and limitations of the holographic duality in describing strongly interacting matter at large baryon density, walk the reader through the most important results derived using the holographic approach so far, and highlight a number of outstanding open problems in the field. Finally, we discuss how we foresee holography contributing to compact-star physics in the coming years.
