Ultra-light dark matter perturbs the orbital motion of binary pulsars, in particular by causing peculiar time variations of a binary's orbital parameters, which then induce variations in the pulses' times-of-arrival. Binary pulsars have therefore been shown to be promising detectors of ultra-light dark matter. To date, the sensitivity of binary pulsars to ultra-light dark matter has only been studied for dark matter masses in a narrow resonance band around a multiple of the binary pulsar orbital frequency. In this study we devise a two-step, bayesian method that enables us to compute semi-analytically the sensitivity for all masses, also away from the resonance, and to combine several observed binaries into one global sensitivity curve. We then apply our method to the case of a universal, linearly-coupled, scalar ultra-light dark matter. We find that with next-generation radio observatories the sensitivity to the ultra-light dark matter coupling will surpass that of solar-system constraints for a decade in mass around $m\sim10^{-21}$ $\text{eV}$, even beyond resonance.
We demonstrate for the first time using a robust Bayesian approach to analyse the populations of radio-quiet (RQ) and radio-loud (RL) gamma-ray pulsars. We quantify their differences and obtain their distributions of the radio-cone opening half-angle $δ$ and the magnetic inclination angle $α$ by Bayesian inference. In contrast to the conventional frequentist point estimations that might be non-representative when the distribution is highly skewed or multi-modal, which is often the case when data points are scarce, Bayesian statistics displays the complete posterior distribution that the uncert…
We present proper motions for 15 pulsars which are observed regularly by the Nanshan 25-m radio telescope. Two methods, the frequentist method (Coles et al.2011) and the Bayesian (Lentati et al. 2014) method, are used and the results are compared. We demonstrate that the two methods can be applied to young pulsar data sets that exhibit large amounts of timing noise with steep spectral exponents and give consistent results. The measured positions also agree with very-long-baseline interferometric positions. Proper motions for four pulsars are obtained for the first time, and improved values are…
Pulsed emission from almost one hundred millisecond pulsars (MSPs) has been detected in $γ$-rays by the Fermi Large-Area Telescope. The global properties of this population remain relatively unconstrained despite many attempts to model their spatial and luminosity distributions. We perform here a self-consistent Bayesian analysis of both the spatial distribution and luminosity function simultaneously. Distance uncertainties, arising from errors in the parallax measurement or Galactic electron-density model, are marginalized over. We provide a public Python package for calculating distance unce…

We describe several new techniques which accelerate Bayesian searches for continuous gravitational-wave emission from supermassive black-hole binaries using pulsar timing arrays. These techniques mitigate the problematic increase of search-dimensionality with the size of the pulsar array which arises from having to include an extra parameter per pulsar as the array is expanded. This extra parameter corresponds to searching over the phase of the gravitational-wave as it propagates past each pulsar so that we can coherently include the pulsar-term in our search strategies. Our techniques make th…
The increasing sensitivities of pulsar timing arrays to ultra-low frequency (nHz) gravitational waves promises to achieve direct gravitational wave detection within the next 5-10 years. While there are many parallel efforts being made in the improvement of telescope sensitivity, the detection of stable millisecond pulsars and the improvement of the timing software, there are reasons to believe that the methods used to accurately determine the time-of-arrival (TOA) of pulses from radio pulsars can be improved upon. More specifically, the determination of the uncertainties on these TOAs, which s…
Searching for gravitational waves in pulsar timing array data is computationally intensive. The data is unevenly sampled, and the noise is heteroscedastic, necessitating the use of a time-domain likelihood function with attendant expensive matrix operations. The computational cost is exacerbated when searching for individual supermassive black hole binaries, which have a large parameter space due to the additional pulsar distance, phase offset and noise model parameters needed for each pulsar. We introduce a new formulation of the likelihood function which can be used to make the Bayesian anal…
Pulsar timing array (PTA) searches for a gravitational-wave background (GWB) typically include time-correlated "red" noise models intrinsic to each pulsar. Using a simple simulated PTA dataset with an injected GWB signal we show that the details of the red noise models used, including the choice of amplitude priors and even which pulsars have red noise, have a striking impact on the GWB statistics, including both upper limits and estimates of the GWB amplitude. We find that the standard use of uniform priors on the red noise amplitude leads to 95% upper limits, as calculated from one-sided Bay…
Binary pulsars can be excellent probes of ultra-light dark matter. We consider the scenario where the latter is represented by a spin-2 field. The coherent oscillations of the dark matter field perturb the dynamics of binary systems, leading to secular effects for masses that resonate with the binary systems. For the range $10^{-23}$eV $\lesssim m \lesssim 10^{-17}$eV we show that current timing data could potentially constrain the universal coupling strength of dark matter to ordinary matter at the level of $α\simeq 10^{-5}$.
A new mechanism of particle acceleration to ultra high energies, driven by the rotational slow down of a pulsar (Crab pulsar, for example), is explored. The rotation, through the time dependent centrifugal force, can very efficiently excite unstable Langmuir waves in the e-p plasma of the star magnetosphere via a parametric process. These waves, then, Landau damp on electrons accelerating them in the process. The net transfer of energy is optimal when the wave growth and the Landau damping times are comparable and are both very short compared to the star rotation time. We show, by detailed cal…
We performed a Bayesian analysis of pulsar timing residuals from the NANOGrav pulsar timing array to search for a specific form of stochastic narrow-band signal produced by oscillating gravitational potential in the Galactic halo. Such oscillations arise in models of warm dark matter composed of an ultralight massive scalar field (m\sim 10^{-23} eV), recently considered by Khmelnitsky and Rubakov (2014). In the monochromatic approximation, the stringent upper limit (95% c.l.) on the variable gravitational potential amplitude is found to be Psi_c<1.14 10^{-15}, corresponding to the characterist…

The observation of the first pulse-to-pulse glitch in the Vela pulsar opens a new window on the internal dynamics of neutron stars. We study the minimal three-component model for pulsar glitches by solving it with generic initial conditions. The purpose is to use this solution to fit the data of the 2016 Vela glitch by employing a Bayesian approach and to obtain a probability distribution for the physical parameters of the model and for observational parameters, such as the glitch rise time and the relaxation timescale. The fit is achieved through Bayesian inference. Due to the presence of an …
A new detection method for ultra-low frequency gravitational waves (GWs) with a frequency much lower than the observational range of pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) was suggested in Yonemaru et al. (2016). In the PTA analysis, ultra-low frequency GWs ($\lesssim 10^{-10}$ Hz) which evolve just linearly during the observation time span are absorbed by the pulsar spin-down rates since both have the same effect on the pulse arrival time. Therefore, such GWs cannot be detected by the conventional method of PTAs. However, the bias on the observed spin-down rates depends on relative direction of a pulsar…
We consider the scenario where dark matter (DM) is represented by an ultra-light classical scalar field performing coherent periodic oscillations. We point out that such DM perturbs the dynamics of binary systems either through its gravitational field or via direct coupling to ordinary matter. This perturbation gets resonantly amplified if the frequency of DM oscillations is close to a (half-)integer multiple of the orbital frequency of the system and leads to a secular variation of the orbital period. We suggest to use binary pulsars as probes of this scenario and estimate their sensitivity. …
A new detection method for gravitational waves (GWs) with ultra-low frequencies ($f_{\rm GW} \lesssim 10^{-10}~{\rm Hz}$), which is much lower than the range of pulsar timing arrays (PTAs), was proposed in Yonemaru et al. (2016). This method utilizes the statistical properties of spin-down rates of milli-second pulsars (MSPs) and the sensitivity was evaluated in Yonemaru et al. (2018). There, some simplifying assumptions, such as neglect of the "pulsar term" and spatially uniform distribution of MSPs, were adopted and the sensitivity on the time derivative of GW amplitude was estimated to be $…
Flux densities are basic observation parameters to describe pulsars. In the most updated pulsar catalog, 24% of the listed radio pulsars have no flux density measurement at any frequency. Here, we report the first flux density measurements, spectral indices, pulse profiles, and correlations of the spectral index with pulsar parameters for 19 pulsars employing the Ultra-Wideband Low (UWL) receiver system installed on the Parkes radio telescope. The results for spectral indices of 17 pulsars are in the range between -0.6 and -3.10. The polarization profiles of thirteen pulsars are shown. There i…
When looking for gravitational wave signals from known pulsars, targets have been treated using independent searches. Here we use a hierarchical Bayesian framework to combine observations from individual sources for two purposes: to produce a detection statistic for the whole ensemble of sources within a search, and to estimate the hyperparameters of the underlying distribution of pulsar ellipticities. Both purposes require us to assume some functional form of the ellipticity distribution, and as a proof of principle we take two toy distributions. One is an exponential distribution, defined by…
Pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) are outstanding accelerators in Nature, in the sense that they accelerate electrons up to the radiation reaction limit. Motivated by this observation, this paper examines the possibility that young pulsar wind nebulae can accelerate ions to ultra-high energies at the termination shock of the pulsar wind. We consider here powerful PWNe, fed by pulsars born with $\sim\,$millisecond periods. Assuming that such pulsars exist, at least during a few years after the birth of the neutron star, and that they inject ions into the wind, we find that protons could be accelerated…
We investigate neutron star moments of inertia from Bayesian posterior probability distributions of the nuclear equation of state that incorporate information from microscopic many-body theory and empirical data of finite nuclei. We focus on PSR J0737-3039A and predict that for this 1.338 M_sun neutron star the moment of inertia lies in the range $1.04 \times 10^{45}$ g cm$^{2} < I < 1.51 \times 10^{45}$ g cm$^{2}$ at the 95% credibility level, while the most probable value for the moment of inertia is $\tilde I = 1.36 \times 10^{45}$ g cm$^{2}$. Assuming a measurement of the PSR J0737-3039A m…
The sources of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays ($E\gtrsim10^{19}$ eV) is still an open question in astroparticle physics and in the last years some efforts were made to understand its origin. In this work we consider white dwarf pulsars (WDPs) as possible sources of these ultra energetic particles. If some Soft Gamma Repeaters (SGRs) and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) are considered as white dwarf pulsars, these sources can achieve large electromagnetic potentials on its surface and possibly accelerate particle almost of speed of light and with energies $E \sim 10^{20-21}$ eV. We show that the n…
Previously, [1207.0458] proposed an astrophysical explanation of narrow gamma-ray line-like feature(s) at ~100 GeV from Galactic Center region observed by Fermi/LAT [1205.4700]. The model of [1207.0458] is based on the inverse Compton scattering of external ultra-violet/X-ray radiation by a cold ultra-relativistic electron-positron pulsar wind. We show that the extra broad ~30 MeV component should arise from Comptonization of cosmic microwave background radiation. We estimate the main parameters of this component and show that it can be detectable with MeV telescopes such as CGRO/COMPTEL. The …
The quasi-periodic feature of 1-10 years exhibited in pulsar timing noise has not been well understood since 1980. The recently demonstrated correlation between timing noise and variation of pulse profile motivates us to further investigate its origins. We suggest that the quasi-periodicity feature of timing noise, with rapid oscillations lying on lower frequency structure, comes from the geodetic precession of an unseen binary system, which induces additional motion of the pulsar spin axis. The resultant change of azimuth and latitude at which the observer's line of sight crosses the emission…
The aim of the present paper is to investigate a possible contribution of the rotation-powered pulsars and pulsar wind nebulae to the population of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). We first develop an analytical model for the evolution of the distribution function of pulsars over the spin period and find both the steady-state and the time-dependent solutions. Using the recent results on the X-ray efficiency dependence on pulsar characteristic age, we then compute the X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of rotation-powered pulsars. In a general case it has a broken power-law shape with a high lu…

Using neural networks, we integrate the ability to account for Doppler smearing due to a pulsar's orbital motion with the pulsar population synthesis package \psrpoppy\ to develop accurate modeling of the observed binary pulsar population. As a first application, we show that binary neutron star systems where the two components have highly unequal mass are, on average, easier to detect than systems which are symmetric in mass. We then investigate the population of ultra-compact ($1.5 \, {\rm min} \leq P_{\rm b} \leq 15\,\rm min$) neutron star--white dwarf (NS--WD) and double neutron star (DNS)…

The major programme for observing young, non-recycled pulsars with the Parkes telescope has transitioned from a narrow-band system to an ultra-wideband system capable of observing between 704 and 4032 MHz. We report here on the initial two years of observations with this receiver. Results include dispersion measure (DM) and Faraday rotation measure (RM) variability with time, determined with higher precision than hitherto, flux density measurements and the discovery of several nulling and mode changing pulsars. PSR J1703-4851 is shown to be one of a small subclass of pulsars that has a weak an…

The recent discovery of a new population of ultra-high-energy gamma-ray sources with spectra extending beyond 100 TeV revealed the presence of Galactic PeVatrons - cosmic-ray factories accelerating particles to PeV energies. These sources, except for the one associated with the Crab Nebula, are not yet identified. With an extension of 1 degree or more, most of them contain several potential counterparts, including Supernova Remnants, young stellar clusters and Pulsar Wind Nebulae (PWNe), which can perform as PeVatrons and thus power the surrounding diffuse ultra-high energy gamma-ray structure…
The nanohertz frequency band explored by pulsar timing arrays provides a unique discovery space for gravitational wave signals. In addition to signals from anticipated sources, such as those from supermassive black hole binaries, some previously unimagined sources may emit transient gravitational waves (a.k.a. bursts) with unknown morphology. Unmodeled transients are not currently searched for in this frequency band, and they require different techniques from those currently employed. Possible sources of such gravitational wave bursts in the nanohertz regime are parabolic encounters of superma…
Pulsar radio emission and its polarization are observed to evolve with frequency. This frequency dependence is key to the emission mechanism and the structure of the radio beam. With the new Ultra-Wideband receiver (UWL) on the Parkes radio telescope we are able, for the first time, to observe how pulsar profiles evolve over a broad continuous bandwidth of 700-4000 MHz. We describe here a technique for processing broadband polarimetric observations to establish a meaningful alignment and visualize the data across the band. We apply this to observations of PSRs J1056-6258 and J1359-6038, chosen…
We present high signal-to-noise, full polarization pulse profiles for 40 bright, 'slowly'-rotating (non-recycled) pulsars using the new Ultra-Wideband Low-frequency (UWL; 704-4032 MHz) receiver on the Parkes radio telescope. We obtain updated and accurate interstellar medium parameters towards these pulsars (dispersion measures and Faraday rotation measures), and reveal Faraday dispersion towards PSR J1721-3532 caused by interstellar scattering. We find general trends in the pulse profiles including decreasing fractional linear polarization and increasing degree of circular polarization with i…
The earthward journey of ultra high energy electrons ($\sim 600$ TeV) produced in the Pulsar atmosphere by Landau damping of magneto-centrifugally excited Langmuir waves (drawing energy form the rotational slowdown) on primary electrons, is charted. It is shown, that just as they escape the light cylinder zone, the ultra-high energy particles, interacting with the medium of the Crab nebula, rapidly loose their energy via the quantum synchrotron process, producing highly energetic gamma rays ~ $\sim 0.6$PeV. Interacting with the cosmic background radiation in the interstellar medium, only a tin…
We present the timing and spectral studies of RX J0209.6-7427 during its rare 2019 outburst using observations with the Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) and Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) instruments on the AstroSat satellite. Pulsations having a periodicity of 9.29 s were detected for the first time by the NICER mission in the 0.2-10 keV energy band and, as reported here, by AstroSat over a broad energy band covering 0.3-80 keV. The pulsar exhibits a rapid spin-up during the outburst. Energy resolved folded pulse profiles are generated in several energy bands in 3-80 keV. To the best…
Using Bayesian analyses we study the solar electron density with the NANOGrav 11-year pulsar timing array (PTA) dataset. Our model of the solar wind is incorporated into a global fit starting from pulse times-of-arrival. We introduce new tools developed for this global fit, including analytic expressions for solar electron column densities and open source models for the solar wind that port into existing PTA software. We perform an ab initio recovery of various solar wind model parameters. We then demonstrate the richness of information about the solar electron density, $n_E$, that can be glea…
We probe ultra-low-frequency gravitational waves (GWs) with statistics of spin-down rates of milli-second pulsars (MSPs) by a method proposed in our prevous work (Yonemaru et al. 2016). The considered frequency range is $10^{-12}{\rm Hz} \lesssim f_{\rm GW} \lesssim 10^{-10}$Hz, which cannot be accessed by the conventional pulsar timing array. The effect of such low-frequency GWs appears as a bias to spin-down rates which has a quadrupole pattern in the sky. We use the skewness of the spin-down rate distribution and the number of MSPs with negative spin-down rates to search for the bias induce…
The radio polarization properties of the pulsar population are only superficially captured by the conventional picture of pulsar radio emission. We study the broadband polarization of 271 young radio pulsars, focusing particularly on circular polarization, using high quality observations made with the Ultra-Wideband Low receiver on Murriyang, the Parkes radio telescope. We seek to encapsulate polarization behaviour on a population scale by defining broad categories for frequency- and phase-dependent polarization evolution, studying the co-occurrences of these categorizations and comparing them…
We investigate gravitational waves with sub-nanoHz frequencies ($10^{-11}$ Hz $\lesssim f_{\rm GW} \lesssim 10^{-9}$ Hz) from the spatial distribution of the spin-down rates of milli-second pulsars. As we suggested in Yonemaru et al. 2018, gravitational waves from a single source induces the bias in the observed spin-down rates of pulsars depending on the relative direction between the source and pulsar. To improve the constraints on the time derivative of gravitational-wave amplitude obtained in our previous work (Kumamoto et al. 2019), we adopt a more sophisticated statistical method called …
An ultralight scalar field is a candidate for the dark matter. The ultralight scalar dark matter with mass around $10^{-23}\,{\rm eV}$ induces oscillations of the pulse arrival time in the sensitive frequency range of the pulsar timing arrays. We search for the ultralight scalar dark matter using the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves 11-year Data Set. We give the 95% confidence upper limit for the signal induced by the ultralight scalar dark matter. In comparison with the published Bayesian upper limits on the amplitude of the ultralight scalar dark matter obtained b…
