Binary millisecond pulsars (MSPs) are detached binary systems consisting of a MSP and a He white dwarf. If the initial orbital periods of binary MSPs are less than 0.3 day, they would evolve toward ultra-compact binary pulsars due to the rapid orbital shrinkage by the gravitational wave (GW) radiation. During the orbital decay, the MSP with an ellipticity would spin down by the GW radiation and the magnetic dipole radiation. Our calculations indicate that the angular momentum loss is dominated by the GW radiation when the ellipticities of the neutron stars (NSs) are in the range of $(1-50)\times 10^{-7}$, and the frequencies of high-frequency GW signals from the rotating NSs are $10-100$ Hz when the binary pulsars can be visible as low-frequency GW sources. These high-frequency GW signals are possible to be detected by the aLIGO and the third-generation GW detectors such as Einstein Telescope, depending on the frequencies and the distances. Therefore, some ultra-compact binary pulsars have an opportunity to become intriguing dual-line GW sources. By detecting the low-frequency GW signals, the NS mass can be accurately derived. A dual-line detection of two band GW signals could provide a constraint on the moment of inertia and the ellipticity of the NS. Thus the dual-line GW sources can be potentially applied to constrain the equation of state of the NS.
Flux densities are basic observation parameters to describe pulsars. In the most updated pulsar catalog, 24% of the listed radio pulsars have no flux density measurement at any frequency. Here, we report the first flux density measurements, spectral indices, pulse profiles, and correlations of the spectral index with pulsar parameters for 19 pulsars employing the Ultra-Wideband Low (UWL) receiver system installed on the Parkes radio telescope. The results for spectral indices of 17 pulsars are in the range between -0.6 and -3.10. The polarization profiles of thirteen pulsars are shown. There i…
Binary pulsars can be excellent probes of ultra-light dark matter. We consider the scenario where the latter is represented by a spin-2 field. The coherent oscillations of the dark matter field perturb the dynamics of binary systems, leading to secular effects for masses that resonate with the binary systems. For the range $10^{-23}$eV $\lesssim m \lesssim 10^{-17}$eV we show that current timing data could potentially constrain the universal coupling strength of dark matter to ordinary matter at the level of $α\simeq 10^{-5}$.
Recent observational and theoretical results have suggested that some of ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) sources may contain neutron star (NS) accretors. However, the formation channel and properties of donor stars of NS ULXs remain uncertain. By adopting the non-conservative and rotation-dependent mass transfer model in the primordial binary evolution, we investigate the way to form pulsar ULXs like observed pulsar ULXs in a systematic way. Our simulation results indicate that pulsar ULXs with Be stars and intermediate or/and high mass donors match observed apparent luminosities, orbital periods an…
A new detection method for ultra-low frequency gravitational waves (GWs) with a frequency much lower than the observational range of pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) was suggested in Yonemaru et al. (2016). In the PTA analysis, ultra-low frequency GWs ($\lesssim 10^{-10}$ Hz) which evolve just linearly during the observation time span are absorbed by the pulsar spin-down rates since both have the same effect on the pulse arrival time. Therefore, such GWs cannot be detected by the conventional method of PTAs. However, the bias on the observed spin-down rates depends on relative direction of a pulsar…
The sources of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays ($E\gtrsim10^{19}$ eV) is still an open question in astroparticle physics and in the last years some efforts were made to understand its origin. In this work we consider white dwarf pulsars (WDPs) as possible sources of these ultra energetic particles. If some Soft Gamma Repeaters (SGRs) and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) are considered as white dwarf pulsars, these sources can achieve large electromagnetic potentials on its surface and possibly accelerate particle almost of speed of light and with energies $E \sim 10^{20-21}$ eV. We show that the n…
We report the detection of the likely companion of the binary millisecond pulsar J0740+6620 with the Gran Telescopio Canarias in the $r'$ and $i'$ bands. The position of the detected starlike source coincides with the pulsar coordinates within the 1$σ$ uncertainty of $\approx$ 0.2 arcsec. Its magnitudes are $r'=26.51\pm0.17$ and $i'=25.49\pm0.15$. Comparing the data with the white dwarf cooling tracks suggests that it can be an ultracool helium-atmosphere white dwarf with the temperature $\lesssim$ 3500 K and cooling age $\gtrsim$ 5 Gyr. The age is consistent with the pulsar characteristic age…
A new detection method for gravitational waves (GWs) with ultra-low frequencies ($f_{\rm GW} \lesssim 10^{-10}~{\rm Hz}$), which is much lower than the range of pulsar timing arrays (PTAs), was proposed in Yonemaru et al. (2016). This method utilizes the statistical properties of spin-down rates of milli-second pulsars (MSPs) and the sensitivity was evaluated in Yonemaru et al. (2018). There, some simplifying assumptions, such as neglect of the "pulsar term" and spatially uniform distribution of MSPs, were adopted and the sensitivity on the time derivative of GW amplitude was estimated to be $…
The major programme for observing young, non-recycled pulsars with the Parkes telescope has transitioned from a narrow-band system to an ultra-wideband system capable of observing between 704 and 4032 MHz. We report here on the initial two years of observations with this receiver. Results include dispersion measure (DM) and Faraday rotation measure (RM) variability with time, determined with higher precision than hitherto, flux density measurements and the discovery of several nulling and mode changing pulsars. PSR J1703-4851 is shown to be one of a small subclass of pulsars that has a weak an…
Pulsations were recently detected from the ultraluminous X-ray source X-2 in M82. The newly discovered pulsar has been described as a common neutron star with a 1 TG magnetic field that accretes above the Eddington rate and as a magnetar-like pulsar with a 100 TG magnetic field that is above the quantum limit. We show here that this X-ray source is not exotic in any sense. The standard equations of accretion along field lines predict that, for the measured spin period $P_S$ and spinup rate $\dot{P_S}$, the isotropic X-ray luminosity $L_X$ must be near the Eddington limit (i.e., $L_{X}\approx 3…
We present high signal-to-noise, full polarization pulse profiles for 40 bright, 'slowly'-rotating (non-recycled) pulsars using the new Ultra-Wideband Low-frequency (UWL; 704-4032 MHz) receiver on the Parkes radio telescope. We obtain updated and accurate interstellar medium parameters towards these pulsars (dispersion measures and Faraday rotation measures), and reveal Faraday dispersion towards PSR J1721-3532 caused by interstellar scattering. We find general trends in the pulse profiles including decreasing fractional linear polarization and increasing degree of circular polarization with i…
The earthward journey of ultra high energy electrons ($\sim 600$ TeV) produced in the Pulsar atmosphere by Landau damping of magneto-centrifugally excited Langmuir waves (drawing energy form the rotational slowdown) on primary electrons, is charted. It is shown, that just as they escape the light cylinder zone, the ultra-high energy particles, interacting with the medium of the Crab nebula, rapidly loose their energy via the quantum synchrotron process, producing highly energetic gamma rays ~ $\sim 0.6$PeV. Interacting with the cosmic background radiation in the interstellar medium, only a tin…
Using neural networks, we integrate the ability to account for Doppler smearing due to a pulsar's orbital motion with the pulsar population synthesis package \psrpoppy\ to develop accurate modeling of the observed binary pulsar population. As a first application, we show that binary neutron star systems where the two components have highly unequal mass are, on average, easier to detect than systems which are symmetric in mass. We then investigate the population of ultra-compact ($1.5 \, {\rm min} \leq P_{\rm b} \leq 15\,\rm min$) neutron star--white dwarf (NS--WD) and double neutron star (DNS)…
We report on the spectral behavior of the first Galactic ultraluminous X-ray pulsar Swift J0243.6+6124 with NuSTAR observations during its 2017-2018 outburst. At sub-Eddington levels, the source spectrum is characterized by three emission components, respectively from the accretion column, the hot spot, and a broad iron line emission region. When the source is above the Eddington limit, the hot spot temperature increases and the spectrum features two more blackbody components. One blackbody component has a radius of 10-20 km and is likely originated from the top of the accretion column. The ot…
The recent discovery of a new population of ultra-high-energy gamma-ray sources with spectra extending beyond 100 TeV revealed the presence of Galactic PeVatrons - cosmic-ray factories accelerating particles to PeV energies. These sources, except for the one associated with the Crab Nebula, are not yet identified. With an extension of 1 degree or more, most of them contain several potential counterparts, including Supernova Remnants, young stellar clusters and Pulsar Wind Nebulae (PWNe), which can perform as PeVatrons and thus power the surrounding diffuse ultra-high energy gamma-ray structure…
Pulsar radio emission and its polarization are observed to evolve with frequency. This frequency dependence is key to the emission mechanism and the structure of the radio beam. With the new Ultra-Wideband receiver (UWL) on the Parkes radio telescope we are able, for the first time, to observe how pulsar profiles evolve over a broad continuous bandwidth of 700-4000 MHz. We describe here a technique for processing broadband polarimetric observations to establish a meaningful alignment and visualize the data across the band. We apply this to observations of PSRs J1056-6258 and J1359-6038, chosen…
We present the timing and spectral studies of RX J0209.6-7427 during its rare 2019 outburst using observations with the Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) and Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) instruments on the AstroSat satellite. Pulsations having a periodicity of 9.29 s were detected for the first time by the NICER mission in the 0.2-10 keV energy band and, as reported here, by AstroSat over a broad energy band covering 0.3-80 keV. The pulsar exhibits a rapid spin-up during the outburst. Energy resolved folded pulse profiles are generated in several energy bands in 3-80 keV. To the best…
The observable population of double neutron star (DNS) systems in the Milky Way allow us to understand the nature of supernovae and binary stellar evolution. Until now, all DNS systems in wide orbits ($ P_{\textrm{orb}}>$ 1~day) have been found to have orbital eccentricities, $e > 0.1$. In this paper, we report the discovery of pulsar PSR J1325$-$6253: a DNS system in a 1.81 day orbit with a surprisingly low eccentricity of just $e = 0.064$. Through 1.4 yr of dedicated timing with the Parkes radio telescope we have been able to measure its rate of advance of periastron, $\dotω=0.138 \pm 0.002$…
We probe ultra-low-frequency gravitational waves (GWs) with statistics of spin-down rates of milli-second pulsars (MSPs) by a method proposed in our prevous work (Yonemaru et al. 2016). The considered frequency range is $10^{-12}{\rm Hz} \lesssim f_{\rm GW} \lesssim 10^{-10}$Hz, which cannot be accessed by the conventional pulsar timing array. The effect of such low-frequency GWs appears as a bias to spin-down rates which has a quadrupole pattern in the sky. We use the skewness of the spin-down rate distribution and the number of MSPs with negative spin-down rates to search for the bias induce…
The radio polarization properties of the pulsar population are only superficially captured by the conventional picture of pulsar radio emission. We study the broadband polarization of 271 young radio pulsars, focusing particularly on circular polarization, using high quality observations made with the Ultra-Wideband Low receiver on Murriyang, the Parkes radio telescope. We seek to encapsulate polarization behaviour on a population scale by defining broad categories for frequency- and phase-dependent polarization evolution, studying the co-occurrences of these categorizations and comparing them…
We investigate gravitational waves with sub-nanoHz frequencies ($10^{-11}$ Hz $\lesssim f_{\rm GW} \lesssim 10^{-9}$ Hz) from the spatial distribution of the spin-down rates of milli-second pulsars. As we suggested in Yonemaru et al. 2018, gravitational waves from a single source induces the bias in the observed spin-down rates of pulsars depending on the relative direction between the source and pulsar. To improve the constraints on the time derivative of gravitational-wave amplitude obtained in our previous work (Kumamoto et al. 2019), we adopt a more sophisticated statistical method called …
We consider the scenario where dark matter (DM) is represented by an ultra-light classical scalar field performing coherent periodic oscillations. We point out that such DM perturbs the dynamics of binary systems either through its gravitational field or via direct coupling to ordinary matter. This perturbation gets resonantly amplified if the frequency of DM oscillations is close to a (half-)integer multiple of the orbital frequency of the system and leads to a secular variation of the orbital period. We suggest to use binary pulsars as probes of this scenario and estimate their sensitivity. …
Close-orbit low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), radio binary millisecond pulsars (BMSPs) with extremely low-mass helium WDs (ELM He~WDs) and ultra-compact X-ray binaries (UCXBs) are all part of the same evolutionary sequence. It is therefore of uttermost importance to understand how these populations evolve from one specie to another. Moreover, UCXBs are important gravitational wave (GW) sources and can be detected by future space-borne GW observatories. However, the formation and evolutionary link between these three different populations of neutron star (NS) binaries are not fully understood. I…
We report on results from a one-year soft X-ray observing campaign of the ultraluminous X-ray pulsar NGC 300 ULX-1 by the Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) during 2018--2019. Our analysis also made use of data from Swift/XRT and XMM-Newton in order to model and remove contamination from the nearby eclipsing X-ray binary NGC 300 X-1. We constructed and fitted a series of 5-day averaged NICER spectra of NGC 300 ULX-1 in the 0.4--4.0 keV range to evaluate the long-term spectral evolution of the source, and found that an absorbed power-law model provided the best fit overall. Over…
By performing 2.5-dimensional general relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamic simulations, we demonstrate supercritical accretion onto a non-rotating, magnetized neutron star, where the magnetic field strength of dipole fields is $10^{10}$ G on the star surface. We found the supercritical accretion flow consists of two parts; the accretion columns and the truncated accretion disk. The supercritical accretion disk, which appears far from the neutron star, is truncated at around $\sim 3R_*$ ($R_*=10^6$ cm is the neutron star radius), where the magnetic pressure via the dipole magnetic fields …
Ultralight bosons can be abundantly produced through superradiance process by a spinning black hole and form a bound state with hydrogen-like spectrum. We show that such a "gravitational atom" typically possesses anomalously large mass quadrupole and leads to significant orbital precession when it forms an eccentric binary with a second compact object. Dynamically formed black hole binaries or pulsar-black hole binaries are typically eccentric during their early inspirals. We show that the large orbital precession can generate distinct and observable signature in their gravitational wave or pu…
We study properties of luminous X-ray pulsars using a simplified model of the accretion column. The maximal possible luminosity is calculated as a function of the neutron star (NS) magnetic field and spin period. It is shown that the luminosity can reach values of the order of $10^{40}\,{\rm erg/s}$ for the magnetar-like magnetic field ($B\gtrsim 10^{14}\,{\rm G}$) and long spin periods ($P\gtrsim 1.5\,{\rm s}$). The relative narrowness of an area of feasible NS parameters which are able to provide higher luminosities leads to the conclusion that $L\simeq 10^{40}\,\,{\rm erg/s}$ is a good esti…
NGC 7793 P13 is a variable (luminosity range ~100) ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) proposed to host a stellar-mass black hole of less than 15 M$_{\odot}$ in a binary system with orbital period of 64 d and a 18-23 M$_{\odot}$ B9Ia companion. Within the EXTraS project we discovered pulsations at a period of ~0.42 s in two XMM-Newton observations of NGC 7793 P13, during which the source was detected at $L_{\mathrm{X}}\sim2.1\times10^{39}$ and $5\times10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (0.3-10 keV band). These findings unambiguously demonstrate that the compact object in NGC 7793 P13 is a neutron star accreti…
Dark matter (DM) can consist of very light bosons behaving as a classical scalar field that experiences coherent oscillations. The presence of this DM field would perturb the dynamics of celestial bodies, either because the (oscillating) DM stress tensor modifies the gravitational potentials of the galaxy, or if DM is directly coupled to the constituents of the body. We study secular variations of the orbital parameters of binary systems induced by such perturbations. Two classes of effects are identified. Effects of the first class appear if the frequency of DM oscillations is in resonance wi…
We present a spectral study of the ultraluminous Be/X-ray transient pulsar Swift J0243.6+6124 using Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) observations during the system's 2017--2018 giant outburst. The 1.2--10~keV energy spectrum of the source can be approximated with an absorbed cut-off power law model. We detect strong, luminosity-dependent emission lines in the 6--7 keV energy range. A narrow 6.42 keV line, observed in the sub-Eddington regime, is seen to evolve into a broad Fe-line profile in the super-Eddington regime. Other features are found at 6.67 and 6.97 keV in the Fe-l…

Ultraluminous x-ray sources (ULXs) in nearby galaxies shine brighter than any X-ray source in our Galaxy. ULXs are usually modeled as stellar-mass black holes (BHs) accreting at very high rates or intermediate-mass BHs. We present observations showing that NGC5907 ULX is instead an x-ray accreting neutron star (NS) with a spin period evolving from 1.43~s in 2003 to 1.13~s in 2014. It has an isotropic peak luminosity of about 1000 times the Eddington limit for a NS at 17.1~Mpc. Standard accretion models fail to explain its luminosity, even assuming beamed emission, but a strong multipolar magne…
Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are a population of extragalactic objects whose luminosity exceeds the Eddington limit for a 10 Msun black hole (BH). Their properties have been widely interpreted in terms of accreting stellar-mass or intermediate-mass BHs. However at least three neutron stars (NSs) have been recently identified in ULXs through the discovery of periodic pulsations. Motivated by these findings we studied the spectral properties of a sample of bright ULXs using a simple continuum model which was extensively used to fit the X-ray spectra of accreting magnetic NSs in the Galaxy.…
