We show that Stanley's Conjecture holds for square free monomial ideals in five variables, that is the Stanley depth of a square free monomial ideal in five variables is greater or equal with its depth.
We compute the Stanley depth of irreducible monomial ideals and we show that the Stanley depth of a monomial complete intersection ideal is the same as the Stanley depth of it's radical. Also, we give some bounds for the Stanley depth of a monomial complete intersection ideal.
We give an upper bound for the Stanley depth of the edge ideal $I$ of a $k$-partite complete graph and show that Stanley's conjecture holds for $I$. Also we give an upper bound for the Stanley depth of the edge ideal of a $k$-uniform complete bipartite hypergraph.
We give different bounds for the Stanley depth of a monomial ideal $I$ of a polynomial algebra $S$ over a field $K$. For example we show that the Stanley depth of $I$ is less or equal with the Stanley depth of any prime ideal associated to $S/I$. Also we show that the Stanley conjecture holds for $I$ and $S/I$ when the associated prime ideals of $S/I$ are generated by disjoint sets of variables.
We compute the depth and Stanley depth for the quotient ring of the path ideal of length $3$ associated to a $n$-cyclic graph, given some precise formulas for depth when $n\not\equiv 1\,(\mbox{mod}\ 4)$, tight bounds when $n\equiv 1\,(\mbox{mod}\ 4)$ and for Stanley depth when $n\equiv 0,3\,(\mbox{mod}\ 4)$, tight bounds when $n\equiv 1,2\,(\mbox{mod}\ 4)$. Also, we give some formulas for depth and Stanley depth of a quotient of the path ideals of length $n-1$ and $n$.
The aim of this paper is to give a formula for the Stanley depth of quotient of powers of the path ideal. As a consequence, we establish that the behaivior of the Stanley depth of quotient of powers of the path ideal is the same as a classical result of Brodmann on depth.
In this paper we study depth and Stanley depth of the edge ideals and quotient rings of the edge ideals, associated to classes of graphs obtained by taking the strong product of two graphs. We consider the cases when either both graphs are arbitrary paths or one is an arbitrary path and the other is an arbitrary cycle. We give exact formulae for values of depth and Stanley depth for some sub classes. We also give some sharp upper bounds for depth and Stanley depth in the general cases.
Let $I\subset J$ be monomial ideals of a polynomial algebra $S$ over a field. Then the Stanley depth of $J/I$ is smaller or equal with the Stanley depth of $\sqrt{J}/\sqrt{I}$. We give also an upper bound for the Stanley depth of the intersection of two primary monomial ideals $Q$, $Q'$, which is reached if $Q$, $Q'$ are irreducible, ht$(Q+Q')$ is odd and $\sqrt{Q}$, $\sqrt{Q'}$ have no common variable.
We give tight bounds for the Stanley depth of the quotient ring of the path ideal of a cycle graph. In particular, we prove that it satisfies the Stanley inequality.
Lyubeznik introduced the concept of size of a monomial ideal and showed that the size of a monomial ideal increased by $1$ is a lower bound for its depth. We show that the size is also a lower bound for its Stanley depth. Applying Alexander duality we obtain upper bounds for the regularity and Stanley regularity of squarefree monomial ideals.
We give upper bounds for the Stanley depth of edge ideals of certain k-partite clutters. In particular, we generalize a result of Ishaq about the Stanley depth of the edge ideal of a complete bipartite graph. A result of Pournaki, Seyed Fakhari and Yassemi implies that the Stanley's conjecture holds for d-uniform complete d-partite clutters. Here we give a shorter and different proof of this fact.
In this paper we show that the depth and the Stanley depth of the factor of two monomial ideals is invariant under taking a so called canonical form. It follows easily that the Stanley Conjecture holds for the factor if and only if it holds for its canonical form. In particular, we construct an algorithm which simplifies the depth computation and using the canonical form we massively reduce the run time for the sdepth computation.
Let $k$ be a positive integer. We compute depth and Stanley depth of the quotient ring of the edge ideal associated to the $k^{th}$ power of a path on $n$ vertices. We show that both depth and Stanley depth have the same values and can be given in terms of $k$ and $n$. For $n\geq 2k+1$, let $n\equiv 0,k+1,k+2,\dots, n-1(\mod(2k+1))$. Then we give values of depth and Stanley depth of the quotient ring of the edge ideal associated to the $k^{th}$ power of a cycle on $n$ vertices and tight bounds otherwise, in terms of $n$ and $k$. We also compute lower bounds for the Stanley depth of the edge id…
Let $I\supsetneq J$ be two monomial ideals of a polynomial algebra over a field generated in degree $\geq d$, resp. $\geq d+1$ . We study when the Stanley Conjecture holds for $I/J$ using the recent result of \cite{IKM} concerning the polarization.
Let $I$ be an $m$-generated complete intersection monomial ideal in $S=K[x_1,...,x_n]$. We show that the Stanley depth of $I$ is $n-\floor{\frac{m}{2}}$. We also study the upper-discrete structure for monomial ideals and prove that if $I$ is a squarefree monomial ideal minimally generated by 3 elements, then the Stanley depth of $I$ is $n-1$.
We consider the path ideal associated to a line graph, we compute \texttt{sdepth} for its quotient ring and note that it is equal with its \texttt{depth}. In particular, it satisfies the Stanley inequality.
Let $Q$ and $Q'$ be two monomial primary ideals of a polynomial algebra $S$ over a field. We give an upper bound for the Stanley depth of $S/(Q\cap Q')$ which is reached if $Q$,$Q'$ are irreducible. Also we show that Stanley's Conjecture holds for $Q_1\cap Q_2$, $S/(Q_1\cap Q_2\cap Q_3)$, $(Q_i)_i$ being some irreducible monomial ideals of $S$.
Let $S$ be a ring of polynomials in finitely many variables over a field. In this paper we give lower bounds for depth and Stanley depth of modules of the type $S/I^t$ for $t\geq1$, where $I$ is the edge ideal of some caterpillar and lobster trees. These new bounds are much sharper than the existing bounds for the classes of ideals we considered.
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over the field $\mathbb{K}$. In this paper, it is shown that Stanley's conjecture holds for $S/I$, if $I$ is a weakly polymatroidal ideal.
We consider the face ideal associated to a line-type simplicial complex. We compute the \texttt{depth} and the \texttt{sdepth} for its quotient ring. In particular, the facet ideal and its quotient ring satisfy the Stanley inequality.
We prove that the edge ideals of line and cyclic graphs and their quotient rings satisfy the Stanley conjecture. We compute the Stanley depth for the quotient ring of the edge ideal associated to a cycle graph of length $n$, given a precise formula for $n\equiv 0,2 \pmod{3}$ and tight bounds for $n\equiv 1 \pmod{3}$. Also, we give bounds for the Stanley depth of a quotient of two monomial ideals, in combinatorial terms.
The Lyubeznik size of a monomial ideal $I$ of a polynomial ring $S$ is a lower bound for the Stanley depth of $I$ decreased by $1$. A proof given by Herzog-Popescu-Vladoiu had a gap which is solved here.
In this paper we introduce an algorithm for computing the Stanley depth of a finitely generated multigraded module $M$ over the polynomial ring $\mathbb{K}[X_1, \ldots, X_n]$. As an application, we give an example of a module whose Stanley depth is strictly greater than the depth of its syzygy module. In particular, we obtain complete answers for two open questions raised by Herzog. Moreover, we show that the question whether $M$ has Stanley depth at least $r$ can be reduced to the question whether a certain combinatorially defined polytope $\mathscr{P}$ contains a $\mathbb{Z}^n$-lattice point…
We show that $\depth(S/I)=0$ if and only if $\sdepth(S/I)=0$, where $I\subset S=K[x_1,...,x_n]$ is a monomial ideal. We give an algorithm to compute the Stanley depth of $S/I$, where $I\subset S=K[x_1,x_2,x_3]$ is a monomial ideal. Also, we prove that a monomial ideal $I\subset K[x_1,x_2,x_3]$ minimally generated by three monomials has $\sdepth(I)=2$.
Let $I\supsetneq J$ be two squarefree monomial ideals of a polynomial algebra over a field generated in degree $\geq d$, resp. $\geq d+1$ . Suppose that $I$ is either generated by four squarefree monomials of degrees $d$ and others of degrees $\geq d+1$, or by five special monomials of degrees $d$. If the Stanley depth of $I/J$ is $\leq d+1$ then the usual depth of $I/J$ is $\leq d+1$ too.
Let $S=K[x_1,...,x_n]$ be a polynomial ring in $n$ variables over the field $K$. For integers $1\leq t< n$ consider the ideal $I=(x_1,...,x_t)\cap(x_{t+1}, ...,x_n)$ in $S$. In this paper we bound from above the Stanley depth of the ideal $I'=(I,x_{n+1},...,x_{n+p})\subset S'=S[x_{n+1},...,x_{n+p}]$. We give similar upper bounds for the Stanley depth of the ideal $(I_{n,2},x_{n+1},...,x_{n+p})$, where $I_{n,2}$ is the square free Veronese ideal of degree 2 in $n$ variables.
Let $I$ be an intersection of three monomial prime ideals of a polynomial algebra $S$ over a field. We give a special Stanley decomposition of $I$ which provides a lower bound of the Stanley depth of $I$, greater than or equal to $\depth\ (I)$, that is, Stanley's Conjecture holds for $I$.
Let $K$ be a field, $R=K[X_1, ..., X_n]$ be the polynomial ring and $J \subsetneq I$ two monomial ideals in $R$. In this paper we show that $\mathrm{sdepth}\ {I/J} - \mathrm{depth}\ {I/J} = \mathrm{sdepth}\ {I^p/J^p}-\mathrm{depth}\ {I^p/J^p}$, where $\mathrm{sdepth}\ I/J$ denotes the Stanley depth and $I^p$ denotes the polarization. This solves a conjecture by Herzog and reduces the famous Stanley conjecture (for modules of the form $I/J$) to the squarefree case. As a consequence, the Stanley conjecture for algebras of the form $R/I$ and the well-known combinatorial conjecture that every Cohe…
We apply Miller's theory on multigraded modules over a polynomial ring to the study of the Stanley depth of these modules. Several tools for Stanley's conjecture are developed, and a few partial answers are given. For example, we show that taking the Alexander duality twice (but with different "centers") is useful for this subject. Generalizing a result of Apel, we prove that Stanley's conjecture holds for the quotient by a cogeneric monomial ideal.
Let $J\subset I$ be monomial ideals. We show that the Stanley depth of $I/J$ can be computed in a finite number of steps. We also introduce the $\fdepth$ of a monomial ideal which is defined in terms of prime filtrations and show that it can also be computed in a finite number of steps. In both cases it is shown that these invariants can be determined by considering partitions of suitable finite posets into intervals.
Let $I$ be a weakly polymatroidal ideal or a squarefree monomial ideal of a polynomial ring $S$. In this paper we provide a lower bound for the Stanley depth of $I$ and $S/I$. In particular we prove that if $I$ is a squarefree monomial ideal which is generated in a single degree, then ${\rm sdepth}(I)\geq n-\ell(I)+1$ and ${\rm sdepth}(S/I)\geq n-\ell(I)$, where $\ell(I)$ denotes the analytic spread of $I$. This proves a conjecture of the author in a special case.
Let $I$ be the edge ideal of a clutter $\mathcal{C}$ in a polynomial ring $S$. In this paper, we present estimations of the Stanley depth of $I$ as well as the Stanley regularity of $S/I$, in terms of combinatorial data from the clutter $\mathcal{C}$.
In this paper we show that the Stanley depth, as well as the usual depth, are essentially determined by the lcm-lattice. More precisely, we show that for quotients $I/J$ of monomial ideals $J\subset I$, both invariants behave monotonic with respect to certain maps defined on their lcm-lattice. This allows simple and uniform proofs of many new and known results on the Stanley depth. In particular, we obtain a generalization of our result on polarization presented in the reference [IKMF14]. We also obtain a useful description of the class of all monomial ideals with a given lcm-lattice, which is…
Let S=K[x_1,x_2,...,x_n] be a polynomial ring in n variables over a field K. Stanley's conjecture holds for the modules I and S/I, when I is a critical monomial ideal. We calculate the Stanley depth of S/I when I is a canonical critical monomial ideal. For non critical monomial ideals we show the existence of a Stanley ideal with the same depth and Hilbert function.
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field, and let $S=\mathbb{K}[X_1, ..., X_n]$ be the polynomial ring. Let $I$ be a monomial ideal of $S$ with up to 5 generators. In this paper, we present a computational experiment which allows us to prove that $\mathrm{depth}_S S/I = \mathrm{sdepth}_S S/I < \mathrm{sdepth}_S I$. This shows that the Stanley conjecture is true for $S/I$ and $I$, if $I$ can be generated by at most 5 monomials. The result also brings additional computational evidence for a conjecture made by Herzog.
Let F. be a any free resolution of a Z^n-graded submodule of a free module over the polynomial ring K[x_1, ..., x_n]. We show that for a suitable term order on F., the initial module of the p'th syzygy module Z_p is generated by terms m_ie_i where the m_i are monomials in K[x_{p+1}, ..., x_n]. Also for a large class of free resolutions F., encompassing Eliahou-Kervaire resolutions, we show that a Gröbner basis for Z_p is given by the boundaries of generators of F_p. We apply the above to give lower bounds for the Stanley depth of the syzygy modules Z_p, in particular showing it is at least p+1…
The Stanley's Conjecture on Cohen-Macaulay multigraded modules is studied especially in dimension 2. In codimension 2 similar results were obtained by Herzog, Soleyman-Jahan and Yassemi. As a consequence of our results Stanley's Conjecture holds in 5 variables.
We show that the Stanley's conjecture holds for any multigraded $S$-module $M$ with $\sdepth(M)=0$, where $S=K[x_1,...,x_n]$. Also, we give some bounds for the Stanley depth of the powers of the maximal irrelevant ideal in $S$.
Let $I_{n,m}:=(x_1x_2\cdots x_m,\; x_2x_3\cdots x_{m+1},\; \ldots,\; x_{n-m+1}\cdots x_n)$ be the $m$-path ideal of the path graph of length $n$, in the ring $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$. We prove that: $$\mathtt{depth}(S/I_{n,m}^t)=\begin{cases} n-t+2 - \left\lfloor \frac{n-t+2}{m+1} \right\rfloor - \left\lceil \frac{n-t+2}{m+1} \right\rceil, & t \leq n+1-m \\ m-1,& t > n+1-m \end{cases},\text{ for all }t\geq 1.$$ Also, we prove that $\mathtt{depth}(S/I_{n,m}) \geq \mathtt{sdepth}(S/I_{n,m}^t) \geq \mathtt{depth}(S/I_{n,m}^t)$ and $\mathtt{sdepth}(I_{n,m}^t)\geq \mathtt{depth}(I_{n,m}^t)$, for all $…
We develop combinatorial tools to study the relationship between the Stanley depth of a monomial ideal $I$ and the Stanley depth of its compliment, $S/I$. Using these results we are able to prove that if $S$ is a polynomial ring with at most 5 indeterminates and $I$ is a square-free monomial ideal, then the Stanley depth of $S/I$ is strictly larger than the Stanley depth of $I$. Using a computer search, we are able to extend this strict inequality up to polynomial rings with at most 7 indeterminates. This partially answers questions asked by Propescu and Qureshi as well as Herzog.
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over $\mathbb{K}$. In 1982, R. Stanley associated a combinatorial invariant to any finitely generated $\mathbb{Z}^n$-graded $S$-module which is now called Stanley depth. Stanley conjectured that this invariant is an upper bound for the depth of module. Stanley's conjecture has been disproved by Duval et al. \cite{abcj}, and the counterexample is a quotient of squarefree monomial ideals. On the other hand, there are evidences showing that Stanley's inequality can be true for high powers of mono…
Stanley decompositions of multigraded modules $M$ over polynomials rings have been discussed intensively in recent years. There is a natural notion of depth that goes with a Stanley decomposition, called the Stanley depth. Stanley conjectured that the Stanley depth of a module $M$ is always at least the (classical) depth of $M$. In this paper we introduce a weaker type of decomposition, which we call Hilbert decomposition, since it only depends on the Hilbert function of $M$, and an analogous notion of depth, called Hilbert depth. Since Stanley decompositions are Hilbert decompositions, the la…
Let $I\subset S=\KK[x_1,...,x_n]$ be an ideal generated by squarefree monomials of degree $\ge d$. If the number of degree $d$ minimal generating monomials $μ_d(I)\le \min(\binom{n}{d+1},\sum_{j=1}^{n-d}\binom{2j-1}{j})$, then the Stanley depth $\sdepth_S(I)\ge d+1$.
Let $R = K[X_1, ..., X_n]$ be a polynomial ring over some field $K$. In this paper, we prove that the $k$-th syzygy module of the residue class field $K$ of $R$ has Stanley depth $n-1$ for $\lfloor n/2 \rfloor \leq k < n$, as it had been conjectured by Bruns et. al. in 2010. In particular, this gives the Stanley depth for a whole family of modules whose graded components have dimension greater than $1$. So far, the Stanley depth is known only for a few examples of this type. Our proof consists in a close analysis of a matching in the Boolean algebra.
We give an upper bound for the Stanley depth of the edge ideal of a complete $k$-partite hypergraph and as an application we give an upper bound for the Stanley depth of a monomial ideal in a polynomial ring $S$. We also give a lower and an upper bound for the cyclic module $S/I$ associated to the complete $k$-partite hypergraph.
Let $S$ be a polynomial ring and let $I \subseteq S$ be a monomial ideal. In this short note, we propose the conjecture that the Betti poset of $I$ determines the Stanley projective dimension of $S/I$ or $I$. Our main result is that this conjecture implies the Stanley conjecture for $I$, and it also implies that \[ \operatorname{sdepth} S/I \geq \operatorname{depth} S/I - 1.\] Recently, Duval et al. found a counterexample to the Stanley conjecture, and their counterexample satisfies $\operatorname{sdepth} S/I = \operatorname{depth} S/I - 1$. So if our conjecture is true, then the conclusion is…
The aim of this paper is to study the Stanley depth of symbolic powers of a squarefree monomial ideal. We prove that for every squarefree monomial ideal $I$ and every pair of integers $k, s\geq 1$, the inequalities ${\rm sdepth} (S/I^{(ks)}) \leq {\rm sdepth} (S/I^{(s)})$ and ${\rm sdepth} (I^{(ks)}) \leq {\rm sdepth} (I^{(s)})$ hold. If moreover $I$ is unmixed of height $d$, then we show that for every integer $k\geq1$, ${\rm sdepth}(I^{(k+d)})\leq {\rm sdepth}(I^{(k)})$ and ${\rm sdepth}(S/I^{(k+d)})\leq {\rm sdepth}(S/I^{(k)})$. Finally, we consider the limit behavior of the Stanley depth o…
We show that for proving the Stanley conjecture, it is sufficient to consider a very special class of monomial ideals. These ideals (or rather their lcm lattices) are in bijection with the simplicial spanning trees of skeletons of a simplex. We apply this result to verify the Stanley conjecture for quotients of monomial ideals with up to six generators. For seven generators we obtain a partial result.
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,...,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over the field $\mathbb{K}$. For every monomial ideal $I\subset S$, We provide a recursive formula to determine a lower bound for the Stanley depth of $S/I$. We use this formula to prove the inequality ${\rm sdepth}(S/I)\geq {\rm size}(I)$ for a particular class of monomial ideals.
Let $S$ be a polynomial algebra over a field. We study classes of monomial ideals (as for example lexsegment ideals) of $S$ having minimal depth. In particular, Stanley's conjecture holds for these ideals. Also we show that if Stanley's conjecture holds for a square free monomial ideal then it holds for all its trivial modifications.
We prove that the Stanley's conjecture holds for monomial ideals $I\subset K[x_1,...,x_n]$ generated by at most $2n-1$ monomials, i.e. $sdepth(I)\geq depth(I)$.
Let $I\supsetneq J$ be two square free monomial ideals of a polynomial algebra over a field generated in degree $\geq 1$, resp. $\geq 2$ . Almost always when $I$ contains precisely one variable, the other generators having degrees $\geq 2$, if the Stanley depth of $I/J$ is $\leq 2$ then the usual depth of $I/J$ is $\leq 2$ too, that is the Stanley Conjecture holds in these cases.
