The existence of a thermodynamic description of horizons indicates that spacetime has a microstructure. While the "fundamental" degrees of freedom remain elusive, quantizing Einstein's gravity provides some clues about their properties. A quantum AdS black hole possesses an equispaced mass spectrum, independent of Newton's constant, $G$, when its horizon radius is large compared to the AdS length. Moreover, the black hole's thermodynamics in this limit is inextricably connected with its thermodynamics in the opposite (Schwarzschild) limit by a duality of the Bose partition function. $G$, absent in the mass spectrum, reemerges in the thermodynamic description through the Schwarzschild limit, which should be viewed as a natural "ground state". It seems that the Hawking-Page phase transition separates fundamental, "particle-like" degrees of freedom from effective, "geometric" ones.
We study the Padmanabhan's emergent Universe in the context of Bousso's covariant entropy conjecture. We find that for a flat Universe, this conjecture can be applied for the system of Padmanabhan's emergent Universe. It turns out that the maximum "bulk entropy" of Padmanabhan's emergent Universe coincides with the upper bound of Bousso's covariant entropy on the null surface defined by Hubble horizon, provided that the Universe is just filled by the cosmological constant or radiation field which represent maximal entropy during inflation and subsequent radiation dominant era. This maximal ent…
The accelerated expansion of the universe can be interpreted as a quest for satisfying holographic equipartition. It can be expressed by a simple law, $ΔV = Δt\left(N_{surf}- N_{bulk}\right)$ which leads to the standard Friedmann equation. This novel idea suggested by Padmanabhan in the context of general relativity has been generalized by Cai and Yang et al. to Gauss-Bonnet and Lovelock gravities for a spatially flat universe in different methods. We investigate the consistency of these generalizations with the constraints imposed by the maximum entropy principle. Interestingly, both these ge…
In this work we derive a generalized Newtonian gravitational force and show that it can account for the anomalous galactic rotation curves. We derive the entropy-area relationship applying the Feynman-Hibbs procedure to the supersymmetric Wheeler-DeWitt equation of the Schwarzschild black hole. We obtain the modifications to the Newtonian gravitational force from the entropic formulation of gravity.
In this paper we study the "ungravity" modifications to the Friedmann equations. By using the first law of thermodynamics and the modified entropy area relationship derived from the "ungravity" contributions to the Schwarzschild black hole, we obtain modifications to the Friedmann equation that in the late time regime gives an effective cosmological constant. Therefore, this simple model can provide an "ungravity" origin to the cosmological constant $Λ$.
Non-additive entropies have been proposed as alternatives to understanding the thermodynamics of Black Holes. Moreover, it has been suggested that the difficulties of quantization of gravity are an indication that gravity is an emergent phenomenon, and therefore an entropic formulation is warranted. In this work, we explore cosmologies that come from non-additive entropies. We focus our study on the cosmologies derived from entropies in superstatistics.
The IKKT matrix model (or the type IIB matrix model) is known as a promising candidate for a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory in ten dimensions. As a most attractive feature, the model admits the emergence of (3+1)-dimensional space-time associated with the spontaneous breaking of the (9+1)-dimensional Lorentz symmetry. Numerical confirmation of such a phenomenon has been attempted for more than two decades. Recently it has been found that the sign problem, the main obstacle in simulating this model, can be overcome by the complex Langevin method. It has been shown that the Lo…
We argue that the equations of motion of quantum field theories in curved backgrounds encode new fundamental black hole thermodynamic relations. We define new entropy variation relations. These `emerge' through the monodromies that capture the infinitesimal changes in the black hole background produced by the field excitations. This raises the possibility of new thermodynamic relations defined as independent sums involving entropies, temperatures and angular velocities defined at every black hole horizon. We present explicit results for the sum of all horizon entropy variations for general rot…
There is natural association of entropy with gravitational systems on one hand and partition of natural numbers on the other hand. We show that given a partition of natural numbers, it is possible to directly associate a metric with it. Gravity emerges from patterns in partition. In the process, metric and matter is unified into a fundamental notion of partition. More precisely, we find a common origin of Schwarzschild metric on one hand and black-hole entropy on the other hand. It immediately implies that information and metric are one and the same and any change in information is stored as c…
We investigate a thermally isolated quantum many-body system with an external control represented by a time-dependent parameter. We formulate a path integral in terms of thermal pure states and derive an effective action for trajectories in a thermodynamic state space, where the entropy appears with its conjugate variable. In particular, for quasi-static operations, the symmetry for the uniform translation of the conjugate variable emerges in the path integral. This leads to the entropy as a Noether invariant.
Recently Leutheusser and Liu [1,2] identified an emergent algebra of Type III$_1$ in the operator algebra of ${\mathcal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory for large $N$. Here we describe some $1/N$ corrections to this picture and show that the emergent Type III$_1$ algebra becomes an algebra of Type II$_\infty$. The Type II$_\infty$ algebra is the crossed product of the Type III$_1$ algebra by its modular automorphism group. In the context of the emergent Type II$_\infty$ algebra, the entropy of a black hole state is well-defined up to an additive constant, independent of the state. This is somewha…
We investigate a thermally isolated quantum many-body system with an external control represented by a step protocol of a parameter. The propagator at each step of the parameter change is described by thermodynamic quantities under some assumptions. For the time evolution of such systems, we formulate a path integral over the trajectories in the thermodynamic state space. In particular, for quasi-static operations, we derive an effective action of the thermodynamic entropy and its canonically conjugate variable. Then, the symmetry for the uniform translation of the conjugate variable emerges i…

There ought to exist a reformulation of quantum theory which does not depend on classical time. To achieve such a reformulation, we introduce the concept of an atom of space-time-matter (STM). An STM atom is a classical non-commutative geometry, based on an asymmetric metric, and sourced by a closed string. Different such atoms interact via entanglement. The statistical thermodynamics of a large number of such atoms gives rise, at equilibrium, to a theory of quantum gravity. Far from equilibrium, where statistical fluctuations are large, the emergent theory reduces to classical general relativ…
This dissertation investigates thermodynamic, emergent and holographic aspects of gravity in the context of causal diamonds. We obtain a gravitational first law for causal diamonds in maximally symmetric spacetimes and argue that these diamonds are in thermodynamic equilibrium at negative temperature. Further, gravitational field equations, including higher curvature corrections, are derived from an equilibrium condition on the generalized entropy of small maximally symmetric diamonds. Finally, we assign three holographic microscopic quantities to causal diamonds in spherically symmetric space…
We have proposed that the interior of a macroscopic Schwarzschild black hole (BH) consists of highly excited, long, closed, interacting strings and, as such, can be modeled as a collapsed polymer. It was previously shown that the scaling relations of the collapsed-polymer model agree with those of the BH. The current paper further substantiates this proposal with an investigation into some of its dynamical consequences. In particular, we show that the model predicts, without relying on gravitational effects, an emergent horizon. We further show that the horizon fluctuates quantum mechanically …

Informational dependence between statistical or quantum subsystems can be described with Fisher matrix or Fubini-Study metric obtained from variations of the sample/configuration space coordinates. Using these non-covariant objects as macroscopic constraints we consider statistical ensembles over the space of classical probability distributions or quantum wave-functions. The ensembles are covariantized using dual field theories with either complex or real scalar fields identified with complex wave-functions or square root of probabilities. We argue that a full space-time covariance on a field …
