We argue that the equations of motion of quantum field theories in curved backgrounds encode new fundamental black hole thermodynamic relations. We define new entropy variation relations. These `emerge' through the monodromies that capture the infinitesimal changes in the black hole background produced by the field excitations. This raises the possibility of new thermodynamic relations defined as independent sums involving entropies, temperatures and angular velocities defined at every black hole horizon. We present explicit results for the sum of all horizon entropy variations for general rotating black holes, both in asymptotically at and asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes in four and higher dimensions. The expressions are universal, and in most cases add up to zero. We also find that these thermodynamic summation relations apply in theories involving multi-charge black holes.
We show that a pair of field theory monodromies in which the shift symmetry is broken by small, well motivated deformations, naturally incorporates a mechanism for cancelling off radiative corrections to the cosmological constant. The lighter monodromy sector plays the role of inflation as well as providing a rigid degree of freedom that acts as a dynamical counterterm for the cosmological constant. The heavier monodromy sector includes a rigid dilaton that forces a global constraint on the system and the cancellation of vacuum energy loops occurs at low energies via the sequestering mechanism…
Field theory models of axion monodromy have been shown to exhibit vacuum energy sequestering as an emergent phenomenon for cancelling radiative corrections to the cosmological constant. We study one loop corrections to this class of models coming from virtual axions using a heat kernel expansion. We find that the structure of the original sequestering proposals is no longer preserved at low energies. Nevertheless, the cancellation of radiative corrections to the cosmological constant remains robust, even with the new structures required by quantum corrections.
Recently, a novel emergent phase can occur from thermodynamic consideration of the asymptotically flat Reissner-Nordström black hole (RN-AF) using Rényi statistics. We present an analysis of the thermodynamical and mechanical stabilities of the RN-AF in both the Gibbs-Boltzmann (GB) and the alternative Rényi statistics when charge $q$ and electrostatic potential $ϕ$ are treated as pressure and volume, respectively. Interestingly, the emergent phase of the RN-AF can be both thermodynamically and mechanically stable in some range of parameters in the framework of Rényi thermodynamics. With the c…
We show that in the isentropic scenario the first order thermodynamical particle creation model gives an emergent universe solution even when the chemical potential is non-zero. However there exists no emergent universe scenario in the second order non-equilibrium theory for the particle creation model. We then point out a correspondence between the particle creation model with barotropic equation of state and the equation of state giving rise to an emergent universe without particle creation in spatially flat FRW cosmology.
First and second order non-equilibrium thermodynamics are studied in the context of particle creation mechanism for homogeneous and isotropic FLRW model and a general formulation of the emergent scenario is investigated. Finally, the stability of the non-equilibrium thermodynamics is examined.
We investigate a thermally isolated quantum many-body system with an external control represented by a step protocol of a parameter. The propagator at each step of the parameter change is described by thermodynamic quantities under some assumptions. For the time evolution of such systems, we formulate a path integral over the trajectories in the thermodynamic state space. In particular, for quasi-static operations, we derive an effective action of the thermodynamic entropy and its canonically conjugate variable. Then, the symmetry for the uniform translation of the conjugate variable emerges i…
The {\bf k-}essence emergent Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter spacetime has exactly mapped on to the Robinson-Trautman (RT) type spacetime with cosmological constant $Ł$ for certain configuration of {\bf k-}essence scalar field. Theoretically, we evaluated that the thermodynamical quantities for the RT type emergent black hole is different from the usual one in the presence of kinetic energy of the {\bf k-}essence scalar field i.e., the dark energy density. We restrict ourselves into the fact that the dark energy density (K) is to be unity, then the effective temperature and pressure both are nega…
This dissertation investigates thermodynamic, emergent and holographic aspects of gravity in the context of causal diamonds. We obtain a gravitational first law for causal diamonds in maximally symmetric spacetimes and argue that these diamonds are in thermodynamic equilibrium at negative temperature. Further, gravitational field equations, including higher curvature corrections, are derived from an equilibrium condition on the generalized entropy of small maximally symmetric diamonds. Finally, we assign three holographic microscopic quantities to causal diamonds in spherically symmetric space…
The non-singular model of the Universe i.e. emergent scenario is now very well known in cosmology. In Einstein gravity such type of singularity free solution is possible in the context of non-equilibrium thermodynamical prescription (both in first and 2nd order theory) with particle creation mechanism. Also there are various models of emergent scenario in different gravity theories. The present work is a twofold attempt namely (i) it has been examined whether it is possible to have singularity free solution in Hořava-Lifshitz modified gravity theory, (ii) if such singularity free solution exis…
The possibility of an emergent universe solution to Einstein's field equations allowing for an irreversible creation of matter at the expense of the gravitational field is shown. With the universe being chosen as spatially flat FRW spacetime together with equation of state proposed in [17], the solution exists when the ratio of the phenomenological matter creation rate to the number density times the Hubble parameter is a number $β$ of the order of unity and independent of time. The thermodynamic behaviour is also determined for this solution. Interestingly, we also find that an emergent unive…

In the present work, the flat FLRW Universe has been modelled with cosmic matter in the form of diffusive barotropic fluid. The diffusive fluid undergoes dissipation due to diffusion mechanism in the form of cosmological scalar field. From the perspective of non-equilibrium thermodynamics, the evolution equations of the universe have been formulated. By a suitable choice of the cosmological scalar field, emergent scenario of the universe has been obtained.
In a recent paper (Ván, P.; Abe, S. Physica A 2022, 588, 126505), it has been discovered that a scalar field coupled to a fluid and allowed to be a thermodynamic variable in consistency with the second law of thermodynamics is only gravitational and accordingly emergence of extended Newtonian gravity has been predicted. The resulting field equation for the potential of this emergent force is nonlinear and admits the logarithmic potential as a singular solution, suggesting its relevance to the dark matter conundrum. Here, a general analysis of the nonlinear field equation is performed. It is fo…
Since the 1970's it has been known that black hole (and other) horizons are truly thermodynamic in nature. More generally, surfaces which are not horizons have also been conjectured to behave thermodynamically. Initially, for surfaces microscopically expanded from a horizon to so-called stretched horizons, and more recently, for more general ordinary surfaces in the emergent gravity program. To test these conjectures we ask whether such surfaces satisfy an analogue to the first law of thermodynamics (as do horizons). For static asymptotically-flat spacetimes we find that such a first law holds…
We investigate a thermally isolated quantum many-body system with an external control represented by a time-dependent parameter. We formulate a path integral in terms of thermal pure states and derive an effective action for trajectories in a thermodynamic state space, where the entropy appears with its conjugate variable. In particular, for quasi-static operations, the symmetry for the uniform translation of the conjugate variable emerges in the path integral. This leads to the entropy as a Noether invariant.
A possible way out of the conundrum of quantum gravity is the proposal that general relativity (GR) is not a fundamental theory but emerges from an underlying microscopic description. Despite recent interest in the emergent gravity program within the physics as well as the philosophy community, an assessment of the theoretical evidence for this idea is lacking at the moment. We intend to fill this gap in the literature by discussing the main arguments in favour of the hypothesis that the metric field and its dynamics are emergent. First, we distinguish between microstructure inspired from GR, …
The Unruh effect has been investigated from the point of view of the quantum statistical Zubarev density operator in space with the Minkowski metric. Quantum corrections of the fourth order in acceleration to the energy-momentum tensor of real and complex scalar fields, and Dirac field are calculated. Both massless and massive fields are considered. The method for regularization of discovered infrared divergences for scalar fields is proposed. The calculated corrections make it possible to substantiate the Unruh effect from the point of view of the statistical approach, and to explicitly show …
Informational dependence between statistical or quantum subsystems can be described with Fisher matrix or Fubini-Study metric obtained from variations of the sample/configuration space coordinates. Using these non-covariant objects as macroscopic constraints we consider statistical ensembles over the space of classical probability distributions or quantum wave-functions. The ensembles are covariantized using dual field theories with either complex or real scalar fields identified with complex wave-functions or square root of probabilities. We argue that a full space-time covariance on a field …
We investigate the thermodynamical properties of quantum fields in curved spacetime. Our approach is to consider quantum fields in curved spacetime as a quantum system undergoing an out-of-equilibrium transformation. The non-equilibrium features are studied by using a formalism which has been developed to derive fluctuation relations and emergent irreversible features beyond the linear response regime. We apply these ideas to an expanding universe scenario, therefore avoiding assumptions on the relation between entropy and quantum matter. We provide a fluctuation theorem which allows us to und…
