The age problem in the $Λ$CDM model is re-examined. We define the elapsed time $T$ of an object is its age plus the age of the Universe when it was born. Therefore in any cosmology, $T$ must be smaller than the age of the Universe. For the old quasar APM 08279+5255 at $z=3.91$, previous studies have determined the best-fit value of $T$, 1 $σ$ lower limit and the lowest limit to $T$ are 2.3, 2.0 and 1.7 Gyr, respectively. Constrained from SNIa$+R+A+d$, SNIa$+R+A+d+H(z)$, and WMAP5+2dF+SNLS+HST+BBN, the $Λ$CDM model can only accommodate $T(z=3.91)=1.7$ Gyr at 1 $σ$ deviation. Constrained from WMAP5 results only, the $Λ$CDM model can only accommodate $T(z=3.91)=1.7$ Gyr at 2 $σ$ deviation. In all these cases, we found that $Λ$CDM model accommodates the total age (14 Gyr for $z=0$) of the Universe estimated from old globular clusters, but cannot accommodate statistically the 1 $σ$ lower limit to the best-fit age of APM~08279+5255 at $z=3.91$. These results imply that the $Λ$CDM model may suffer from an age problem.
The possibility of reconstructing a spherically symmetric inhomogeneous Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) model with $Λ$CDM observations has drawn a lot of attention. Recently, a LTB model having the same luminosity-distance and light-cone mass density as the $Λ$CDM model was reconstructed. We calculate the cosmic age at our position in this model, and get the age $t_{LTB}<11.7$Gyr in 2$σ$ confidence level from the Seven-Year WMAP observations. This result is inconsistent with some Milky Way observations.
Gravitational field equations in Randers-Finsler space of approximate Berwald type are investigated. A modified Friedmann equation and a new luminosity distance-redshift relation is proposed. A best-fit to the Type Ia supernovae (SNe) observations yields that the $Ω_Λ$ in the $Λ$-CDM model is suppressed to almost zero. This fact indicates that the astronomical observations on the Type Ia SNe can be described well without invoking any form of dark energy. The best-fit age of the universe is given. It is in agreement with the age of our galaxy.
Cosmological observables could be used to construct cosmological models, however, a fixed number of observables limited on the light cone is not enough to uniquely determine a certain model. A reconstructed spherically symmetric, inhomogeneous model that share the same angular-diameter-distance-redshift relationship $d_A(z)$ and Hubble parameter $H(z)$ besides $Λ\textrm{CDM}$ model (which we call LTB-$Λ\textrm{CDM}$ model in this paper), may provide another solution. Cosmic age, which is off the light cone, could be employed to distinguish these two models. We derive the formulae for age calcu…
In this paper we compare outcomes of some extended phantom-like cosmologies with each other and also with $Λ$CDM\, and $Λ$DGP. We focus on the variation of the luminosity distances, the age of the universe and the deceleration parameter versus the redshift in these scenarios. In a dynamical system approach, we show that the accelerating phase of the universe in the $f(R)$-DGP scenario is stable if one consider the \emph{curvature fluid} as a phantom scalar field in the equivalent scalar-tensor theory, otherwise it is a transient and unstable phenomenon. Up to the parameters values adopted in t…
Motivated by the fact that any nonzero $Λ$ can introduce a length scale or a time scale into Einstein's theory, $r_Λ=ct_Λ=\sqrt{3/|Λ|}$. Conversely, any cosmological length scale or time scale can introduce a $Λ(t)$, $Λ(t)=3/r^2_Λ(t)=3/(c^2t^2_Λ(t))$. In this letter, we investigate the time varying $Λ(t)$ corresponding to the length scales, including the Hubble horizon, the particle horizon and the future event horizon, and the time scales, including the age of the universe and the conformal time. It is found out that, in this scenario, the $Λ(t)$CDM model can be taken as the unified origin of…
As an extension of $Λ$CDM, the decaying vacuum model (DV) describes the dark energy as a varying vacuum whose energy density decays linearly with the Hubble parameter in the late-times, $ρ_Λ(t) \propto H(t)$, and produces the matter component. We examine the high-$z$ cosmic age problem in the DV model, and compare it with $Λ$CDM and the Yang-Mills condensate (YMC) dark energy model. Without employing a dynamical scalar field for dark energy, these three models share a similar behavior of late-time evolution. It is found that the DV model, like YMC, can accommodate the high-$z$ quasar APM 08279…
In relativistic inhomogeneous cosmology, structure formation couples to average cosmological expansion. A conservative approach to modelling this assumes an Einstein--de Sitter model (EdS) at early times and extrapolates this forward in cosmological time as a "background model" against which average properties of today's Universe can be measured. This requires adopting an early-epoch--normalised background Hubble constant $H_1^{bg}$. Here, we show that the $Λ$CDM model can be used as an observational proxy to estimate $H_1^{bg}$ rather than choose it arbitrarily. We assume (i) an EdS model at …
We use 32 age measurements of passively evolving galaxies as a function of redshift to test and compare the standard model ($Λ$CDM) with the $R_{\rm h}=ct$ Universe. We show that the latter fits the data with a reduced $χ^2_{\rm dof}=0.435$ for a Hubble constant $H_{0}= 67.2_{-4.0}^{+4.5}$ km $\rm s^{-1}$ $\rm Mpc^{-1}$. By comparison, the optimal flat $Λ$CDM model, with two free parameters (including $Ω_{\rm m}=0.12_{-0.11}^{+0.54}$ and $H_{0}=94.3_{-35.8}^{+32.7}$ km $\rm s^{-1}$ $\rm Mpc^{-1}$), fits the age-\emph{z} data with a reduced $χ^2_{\rm dof}=0.428$. Based solely on their $χ^2_{\rm…
Notoriously, the two main problems of the standard $Λ$CDM model of cosmology are the cosmological constant $Λ$ and the cold dark matter, CDM. This essay shows that both the $Λ$ and the CDM arise as integration constants in a careful derivation of Einstein's equations from first principles in a Lorentz gauge theory. The dark sector of the universe might only reflect the geometry of a spontaneous symmetry breaking that is necessary for the existence of a spacetime and an observer therein.
Over the last nine years of cosmic microwave background observations, the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe ($WMAP$) results were consistent with a $Λ$CDM cosmological model in which the age of the Universe is one Hubble time, and the time-averaged value of the deceleration parameter is consistent with zero. This curious observation has been put forward as a new coincidence problem for the $Λ$CDM concordance cosmology, which is in fact a `greater' coincidence than the near equality of the density parameters of matter and the cosmological constant. At the moment of writing these conference p…
In the paper, we consider two models in which dark energy is coupled with either dust matter or dark matter, and discuss the conditions that allow more time for structure formation to take place at high redshifts. These models are expected to have a larger age of the universe than that of $Λ$CDM [universe consists of cold dark matter (CDM) and dark energy (a cosmological constant, $Λ$)], so it can explain the formation of high redshift gravitationally bound systems which the $Λ$CDM model cannot interpret. We use the observational Hubble parameter data (OHD) and Hubble parameter obtained from c…
We perform a detailed comparison between the Logotropic model [P.H. Chavanis, Eur. Phys. J. Plus 130 (2015) 130] and the $Λ$CDM model. These two models behave similarly at large (cosmological) scales up to the present. Differences will appear only in the far future, in about $25\, {\rm Gyrs}$, when the Logotropic Universe becomes phantom while the $Λ$CDM Universe enters in the de Sitter era. However, the Logotropic model differs from the $Λ$CDM model at small (galactic) scales, where the latter encounters serious problems. Having a nonvanishing pressure, the Logotropic model can solve the cusp…
In the era of precision cosmology, the cosmological constant $Λ$ gives quite an accurate description of the evolution of the Universe, but it is still plagued with the fine-tuning problem and the cosmic coincidence problem. In this work, we investigate the perturbations in a scalar field model that drives the recent acceleration in a similar fashion that the cosmological constant does and has the dark energy (DE) density comparable to the dark matter (DM) energy density at the recent epoch starting from arbitrary initial conditions. The perturbations show that this model, though it keeps the v…
We present a best-fit analysis on the single-parameter holographic dark energy model characterized by the conformal-age-like length, $L=\frac{1}{a^4(t)}\int_0^tdt' a^3(t') $. Based on the Union2 compilation of 557 supernova Ia data, the baryon acoustic oscillation results from the SDSS DR7 and the cosmic microwave background radiation data from the WMAP7, we show that the model gives the minimal $χ^2_{min}=546.273$, which is comparable to $χ^2_{Λ{\rm CDM}}=544.616$ for the $Λ$CDM model. The single parameter $d$ concerned in the model is found to be $d=0.232\pm 0.006\pm 0.009$. Since the fracti…
Planck data provide precise constraints on cosmological parameters when assuming the base $Λ$CDM model, including a $0.17\%$ measurement of the age of the Universe, $t_0=13.797 \pm 0.023\,{\rm Gyr}$. However, the persistence of the "Hubble tension" calls the base $Λ$CDM model's completeness into question and has spurred interest in models such as Early Dark Energy (EDE) that modify the assumed expansion history of the Universe. We investigate the effect of EDE on the redshift-time relation $z \leftrightarrow t$ and find that it differs from the base $Λ$CDM model by at least ${\approx} 4\%$ at …
This review aims at proposing to the field an overview of the Cusp-core problem, including a discussion of its advocated solutions, assessing how each can satisfactorily provide a description of central densities. Whether the Cusp-core problem reflects our insufficient grasp on the nature of dark matter, of gravity, on the impact of baryonic interactions with dark matter at those scales, as included in semi-analytical models or fully numerical codes, the solutions to it can point either to the need for a paradigm change in cosmology, or to to our lack of success in ironing out the finer detail…

The $Λ$CDM model, or concordance cosmology, as it is often called, is a paradigm at its maturity. It is clearly able to describe the universe at large scale, even if some issues remain open, such as the cosmological constant problem , the small-scale problems in galaxy formation, or the unexplained anomalies in the CMB. $Λ$CDM clearly shows difficulty at small scales, which could be related to our scant understanding, from the nature of dark matter to that of gravity; or to the role of baryon physics, which is not well understood and implemented in simulation codes or in semi-analytic models. …
Recently, several statistically significant tensions between different cosmological datasets have raised doubts about the standard Lambda cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) model. A recent letter~\citet{Huang:2020mub} suggests to use "Parameterization based on cosmic Age" (PAge) to approximate a broad class of beyond-$Λ$CDM models, with a typical accuracy $\sim 1\%$ in angular diameter distances at $z\lesssim 10$. In this work, we extend PAge to a More Accurate Parameterization based on cosmic Age (MAPAge) by adding a new degree of freedom $η_2$. The parameter $η_2$ describes the difference between phy…
Separately, neither electromagnetic (EM) observations nor gravitational wave (GW) observations can distinguish between the $f(T)$ model and the $Λ$CDM model effectively. To break this degeneration, we simulate the GW measurement based on the coming observation facilities, explicitly the Einstein Telescope. We make cross-validations between the simulated GW data and factual EM data, including the Pantheon, H(z), BAO and CMBR data, and the results show that they are consistent with each other. Anyway, the EM data itself have the $H_0$ tension problem which plays critical role in the distinguisha…
We continue the study of the impact of baryon physics on the small scale problems of the $Λ$CDM model, based on a semi-analytical model (Del Popolo, 2009). Withsuch model, we show how the cusp/core, missing satellite (MSP), Too Big to Fail (TBTF) problems and the angular momentum catastrophe can be reconciled with observations, adding parent-satellite interaction. Such interaction between darkmatter (DM) and baryons through dynamical friction (DF) can sufficiently flattenthe inner cusp of the density profiles to solve the cusp/core problem. Combining, in our model, a Zolotov et al. (2012)-like…
We study, by means of the model proposed in Del Popolo (2009), the effect of baryon physics on the small scale problems of the CDM model. We show that, using this model, the cusp/core problem, the missing satellite problem (MSP), the Too Big to Fail (TBTF) problem, and the angular momentum catastrophe can be reconciled with observations. Concerning the cusp/core problem, the interaction among dark matter (DM) and baryonic clumps of 1% the mass of the halo, through dynamical friction (DF), is able to flatten the inner cusp of the density profiles. We moreover assume that haloes form primarily t…
In this first paper we discuss the linear theory and the background evolution of a new class of models we dub SCDEW: Strongly Coupled DE, plus WDM. In these models, WDM dominates today's matter density; like baryons, WDM is uncoupled. Dark Energy is a scalar field $Φ$; its coupling to ancillary CDM, whose today's density is $\ll 1\, \%$, is an essential model feature. Such coupling, in fact, allows the formation of cosmic structures, in spite of very low WDM particle masses ($\sim 100$ eV). SCDEW models yields Cosmic Microwave Background and linear Large Scale features substantially undistingu…
The ages of the oldest stellar objects in our galaxy provide an independent test of the current cosmological model as they give a lower limit to the age of the Universe. Recent accurate parallaxes by the Gaia space mission, accurate measurements of the metallicity of stars, via individual elemental abundances, and advances in the modelling of stellar evolution, provide new, higher-precision age estimates of the oldest stellar populations in the galaxy: globular clusters and very-low-metallicity stars. The constraints on the age of the Universe, $t_U$, so obtained are determined from the local …
We here propose a new model-independent technique to overcome the circularity problem affecting the use of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) as distance indicators through the use of $E_{\rm p}$--$E_{\rm iso}$ correlation. We calibrate the $E_{\rm p}$--$E_{\rm iso}$ correlation and find the GRB distance moduli that can be used to constrain dark energy models. We use observational Hubble data to approximate the cosmic evolution through Bézier parametric curve obtained through the linear combination of Bernstein basis polynomials. In so doing, we build up a new data set consisting of 193 GRB distance modu…
Despite its continued observational successes, there is a persistent (and growing) interest in extending cosmology beyond the standard model, $Λ$CDM. This is motivated by a range of apparently serious theoretical issues, involving such questions as the cosmological constant problem, the particle nature of dark matter, the validity of general relativity on large scales, the existence of anomalies in the CMB and on small scales, and the predictivity and testability of the inflationary paradigm. In this paper, we summarize the current status of $Λ$CDM as a physical theory, and review investigatio…
The BICEP2 results, when interpreted as a gravitational wave signal and combined with other CMB data, suggest a roll-off in power towards small scales in the primordial matter power spectrum. Among the simplest possibilities is a running of the spectral index. Here we show that the preferred level of running alleviates small-scale issues within the $Λ$CDM model, more so even than viable WDM models. We use cosmological zoom-in simulations of a Milky Way-size halo along with full-box simulations to compare predictions among four separate cosmologies: a BICEP2-inspired running index model ($α_s$ …
A well-known problem of the $Λ$CDM model is the tension between the relatively high level of clustering, as quantified by the parameter $σ_8$, found in cosmic microwave background experiments and the smaller one obtained from large-scale observations in the late Universe. In this paper we show that coupled quintessence, i.e. a single dark energy scalar field conformally coupled to dark matter through a constant coupling, can solve this problem if the background is taken to be identical to the $Λ$CDM one. We show that two competing effects arise. On one hand, the additional scalar force is attr…
We investigate the cosmic age problem associated with 9 extremely old globular clusters in M31 galaxy and 1 very old high-$z$ quasar APM 08279 + 5255 at $z=3.91$. These 9 globular clusters have not been used to study the cosmic age problem in the previous literature. By evaluating the age of the universe in the $Λ$CDM model with the observational constraints from the SNIa, the BAO, the CMB, and the independent $H_0$ measurements, we find that the existence of 5 globular clusters and 1 high-$z$ quasar are in tension (over 2$σ$ confidence level) with the current cosmological observations. So if …
We construct a generalization of the standard $Λ$CDM model, wherein we simultaneously replace the spatially flat Robertson-Walker metric with its simplest anisotropic generalization (LRS Bianchi I metric), and couple the cold dark matter to the gravity in accordance with the energy-momentum squared gravity (EMSG) of the form $f(T_{μν}T^{μν})\propto T_{μν}T^{μν}$. These two modifications -- namely, two new stiff fluid-like terms of different nature -- can mutually cancel out, i.e., the shear scalar can be screened completely, and reproduce mathematically exactly the same Friedmann equation of t…
In a recent article, Kleidis and Spyrou (2015) proposed that both dark matter (DM) and dark energy (DE) can be treated as a single component, if accommodated in the context of a polytropic DM fluid with thermodynamical content. Depending only on the polytropic exponent, $-0.103 < Γ\leq 0$, this unified DM model reproduces to high accuracy the distance measurements performed with the aid of the supernovae Type Ia (SNe Ia) standard candles, without suffering either from the age or from the coincidence problem. To demonstrate also its compatibility with current observational data concerning struc…
Galactic rotation curves exhibit a diverse range of inner slopes. Observational data indicates that explaining this diversity may require a mechanism that correlates a galaxy's surface brightness with the central-most region of its dark matter halo. In this work, we compare several concrete models that capture the relevant physics required to explain the galaxy diversity problem. We focus specifically on a Self-Interacting Dark Matter (SIDM) model with an isothermal core and two Cold Dark Matter (CDM) models with/without baryonic feedback. In contrast to the CDM case, the SIDM model can lead t…
Many dark energy models fail to pass the cosmic age test because of the old quasar APM 08279+5255 at redshift $z=3.91$, the $Λ$CDM model and holographic dark energy models being no exception. In this paper, we focus on the topic of age problem in the new agegraphic dark energy (NADE) model. We determine the age of the universe in the NADE model by fitting the observational data, including type Ia supernovae (SNIa), baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) and the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We find that the NADE model also faces the challenge of the age problem caused by the old quasar APM 08…
The core-cusp problem is a widely cited motivation for the exploration of dark matter models beyond standard CDM. One such alternative is ULDM; extremely light scalar particles exhibiting wavelike properties on kiloparsec scales. Astrophysically realistic ULDM halos are expected to consist of inner solitonic cores embedded in NFW-like outer halos. The presence of the solitonic core suggests that ULDM may resolve the core-cusp discrepancy associated with pure NFW halos without recourse to baryonic physics. However, it has been demonstrated that the density of ULDM halos can exceed those of comp…
Discrepancies between distance measurements and $Λ$CDM predictions reveal notable features in the distance-redshift relation, possibly suggesting the presence of an evolving dark energy component. Given the central role of the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric in modeling cosmological distances, we investigate here whether these features instead point to a possible departure from the fundamental FLRW symmetries. Exploiting the transverse and line-of-sight distances provided by baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) observations, we demonstrate that observed distances hint at a sl…
Building upon results of cosmological simulations of ultra-light scalar field dark matter (SFDM), we present a comprehensive model for the density profiles of SFDM haloes as a function of halo virial mass $M_{\rm h}$ and scalar field mass $m$. The central regions of SFDM haloes are dominated by solitons with characteristic densities that increase with increasing halo mass and asymptote to CDM-like profiles at large radii. For scalar field masses $m \sim 10^{-22}$ eV, consistent with large-scale structure observations, $M_{\rm h} \sim 10^{10} \,M_\odot$ haloes have lower core densities than the…
The core-cusp problem remains as one of the unsolved discrepancies between observations and theories predicted by the standard paradigm of cold dark matter (CDM) cosmology. To solve this problem, we perform N-body simulations to study the nonlinear response of CDM halos to the variance of the gravitational potential induced by gas removal from galaxy centers. In this study, we focus on the timescale of the gas ejection, which is strongly correlated with stellar activities, and demonstrate that it is one of the key factors in determining the dynamical response of CDM halos. The results of simul…
Recent astronomical discoveries of supermassive black holes (quasars), gamma-bursters, supernovae, and dust at high redshifts, z = (5 --10), are reviewed. Such a dense population of the early universe is at odds with the conventional mechanisms of its possible origin. Similar data from the contemporary universe, which are also in conflict with natural expectations, are considered too. Two possible mechanisms are suggested, at least one of which can potentially solve all these problems. As a by-product of the last model, an abundant cosmological antimatter may be created.
Ultralight axion-like particles $m_a \sim 10^{-22}$ eV, or Fuzzy Dark Matter (FDM), behave comparably to cold dark matter (CDM) on cosmological scales and exhibit a kpc-size de Broglie wavelength capable of alleviating established (sub-)galactic-scale problems of CDM. Substructures inside an FDM halo incur gravitational potential perturbations, resulting in stellar heating sufficient to account for the Galactic disc thickening over a Hubble time, as first demonstrated by Church et al. We present a more sophisticated treatment that incorporates the full baryon and dark matter distributions of t…
We contrast predictions for the high-redshift galaxy population and reionization history between cold dark matter (CDM) and an alternative self-interacting dark matter model based on the recently developed ETHOS framework that alleviates the small-scale CDM challenges within the Local Group. We perform the highest resolution hydrodynamical cosmological simulations (a 36~Mpc$^3$ volume with gas cell mass of $\sim10^5\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ and minimum gas softening of $\sim180$~pc) within ETHOS to date -- plus a CDM counterpart -- to quantify the abundance of galaxies at high redshift and their imp…
