We present and analyze exact gyraton and nonexpanding gravitational wave solutions of algebraic type II on backgrounds which are a direct-product of two 2-spaces of constant curvature, or more general type D spacetimes. This family of electro-vacuum background spacetimes contains the Nariai, anti-Nariai and Plebanski-Hacyan universes, conformally flat Bertotti-Robinson and Minkowski spaces. The gyraton solutions are given in a simple Kundt metric form. They belong to the recently discussed class of spacetimes with constant scalar invariants (CSI) of the curvature tensor. We show that the Einstein equations reduce to a set of linear equations on the transverse 2-space which can be explicitly solved using the Green functions.
In this work we have found and analyzed several gyraton solutions on various non--trivial backgrounds in the large Kundt class of spacetimes. Namely, the gyraton solutions on direct product spacetimes, gyraton solutions on Melvin universe and its generalization which includes the cosmological constant. These solutions are of algebraic type II. Also we have investigated type III solutions within the Kundt class and we have found the gyratons on de Sitter spacetime. We have generalized the gyraton solutions on direct product spacetimes to higher dimensions. The chapters 4 and 5 are published for…
Gyratonic plane fronted gravitational waves are exact solutions of Einstein's field equations, which correspond to gravitational waves that carry momentum and angular-momentum. Using the definitions of the Hamiltonian formulation of the Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity, we explicitly evaluate the general expressions of the energy-momentum and angular-momentum of these space-times. In order to better understand the additional properties of these gravitational waves, we consider the motion of particles in this space-time and obtain an interesting relation between the angular-momentu…
We present and analyze new exact gyraton solutions of algebraic type II on a background which is static, cylindrically symmetric Melvin universe of type D. For a vanishing electromagnetic field it reduces to previously studied gyratons on Minkowski background. We demonstrate that the solutions are member of a more general family of the Kundt spacetimes. We show that the Einstein equations reduce to a set of mostly linear equations on a transverse 2-space and we discuss the properties of polynomial scalar curvature invariants which are generally non-constant but unaffected by the presence of gy…
We present and analyze new exact gyraton solutions of algebraic type II on generalized Melvin universe of type D which admit non-vanishing cosmological constant $Λ$. We show that it generalizes both, gyraton solutions on Melvin and on direct product spacetimes. When we set $Λ= 0$ we get solutions on Melvin spacetime and for $Σ= 1$ we obtain solutions on direct product spacetimes. We demonstrate that the solutions are member of the Kundt family of spacetimes as its subcases. We show that the Einstein equations reduce to a set of equations on the transverse 2-space. We also discuss the polynomia…
We present and analyze exact solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations in higher dimensions which form a large subclass of the Kundt family of spacetimes. We assume that the cosmological constant may be nonvanishing, and the matter consists of a background aligned electromagnetic field and an additional pure radiation (gyratonic) field with a spin. We show that the field equations reduce to a set of linear equations on the transverse space which can be solved exactly and expressed in terms of the Green functions. We thus find explicit exact gyratonic gravitational and electromagnetic fields …
In our previous paper [Phys. Rev. D 89 (2014) 124029], cited as [1], we attempted to find Robinson-Trautman-type solutions of Einstein's equations representing gyratonic sources (matter field in the form of an aligned null fluid, or particles propagating with the speed of light, with an additional internal spin). Unfortunately, by making a mistake in our calculations, we came to the wrong conclusion that such solutions do not exist. We are now correcting this mistake. In fact, this allows us to explicitly find a new large family of gyratonic solutions in the Robinson-Trautman class of spacetim…
Under a weak assumption of the existence of a geodesic null congruence, we present the general solution of the Einstein field equations in three dimensions with any value of the cosmological constant, admitting an aligned null matter field, and also gyratons (a matter field in the form of a null dust with an additional internal spin). The general local solution consists of the expanding Robinson-Trautman class and the non-expanding Kundt class. The gyratonic solutions reduce to spacetimes with a pure radiation matter field when the spin is set to zero. Without matter fields, we obtain new form…
The geometric description of gravitational memory for strong gravitational waves is developed, with particular focus on shockwaves and their spinning analogues, gyratons. Memory, which may be of position or velocity-encoded type, characterises the residual separation of neighbouring `detector' geodesics following the passage of a gravitational wave burst, and retains information on the nature of the wave source. Here, it is shown how memory is encoded in the Penrose limit of the original gravitational wave spacetime and a new `timelike Penrose limit' is introduced to complement the original pl…
We present the explicit metric forms for higher dimensional vanishing scalar invariant (VSI) Lorentzian spacetimes. We note that all of the VSI spacetimes belong to the higher dimensional Kundt class. We determine all of the VSI spacetimes which admit a covariantly constant null vector, and we note that in general in higher dimensions these spacetimes are of Ricci type III and Weyl type III. The Ricci type N subclass is related to the chiral null models and includes the relativistic gyratons and the higher dimensional pp-wave spacetimes. The spacetimes under investigation are of particular int…
Using the invariant form of the equation of geodesic deviation, which describes relative motion of free test particles, we investigate a general family of D-dimensional Kundt spacetimes. We demonstrate that local influence of the gravitational field can be naturally decomposed into Newton-type tidal effects typical for type II spacetimes, longitudinal deformations mainly present in spacetimes of algebraic type III, and type N purely transverse effects corresponding to gravitational waves with D(D-3)/2 independent polarization states. We explicitly study the most important examples, namely exac…
The Gauss-Bonnet gravity is a special case of so-called Quadratic Gravity, which is an extension of Einstein's theory with additional terms in action that are quadratic combinations of the Riemann tensor and its contractions. These corrections are needed, for example, in perturbative quantum gravity. We consider the family of Kundt spacetimes, which is defined in a purely geometrical way by admitting a shear-free, twist-free and expansion-free null geodesic congruence. In particular, we focus on the Kundt solutions without gyratonic terms, and we investigate the constraints imposed by the Eins…
We systematically investigate the complete class of vacuum solutions in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity theory which belong to the Kundt family of non-expanding, shear-free and twist-free geometries (without gyratonic matter terms) in any dimension. The field equations are explicitly derived and simplified, and their solutions classified into three distinct subfamilies. Algebraic structures of the Weyl and Ricci curvature tensors are determined. The corresponding curvature scalars directly enter the invariant form of equation of geodesic deviation, enabling us to understand the specific loca…
The new formulation of the causal completion of spacetimes suggested in [1], and modified later in [2], is tested by computing the causal boundary for product spacetimes of a Lorentz interval and a Riemannian manifold. This is particularized for two important families of spacetimes, conformal to the previous ones: (standard) static spacetimes and Generalized Robertson-Walker spacetimes. As consequence, it is shown that this new approach essentially reproduces the structure of the conformal boundary for multiple classical spacetimes: Reissner-Nordstrom (including Schwarzschild), Anti-de Sitter,…
We investigate the geometrical aspects of the extended (2+1) dimensional Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli spacetimes in the multiply warped product scheme. To do this, we analyze the interior physical properties by constructing the explicit warp functions in these regions.
In the framework of Lorentzian multiply warped products we study the Gibbons-Maeda-Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger (GMGHS) spacetime near hypersurfaces in the interior of the event horizon. We also investigate the geodesic motion in hypersurfaces.
In the framework of Lorentzian multiply warped products we study the magnetically charged Gibbons-Maeda-Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger (GMGHS) interior spacetime in the string frame. We also investigate geodesic motion in various hypersurfaces, and compare their solutions of geodesic equations with the ones obtained in the Einstein frame.
It is shown that the warped product spacetime P=M *_f H, where H is a complete Riemannian manifold, and the original spacetime M share necessarily the same causality properties, the only exceptions being the properties of causal continuity and causal simplicity which present some subtleties. For instance, it is shown that if diamH=+\infty, the direct product spacetime P=M*H is causally simple if and only if (M,g) is causally simple, the Lorentzian distance on M is continuous and any two causally related events at finite distance are connected by a maximizing geodesic. Similar conditions are fo…
In Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, for a group of warped product spacetimes, we get a generalized master equation for the perturbation of tensor type. We show that the "effective metric" or "acoustic metric" for the tensor perturbation equation can be defined even without a static condition. Since this master equation does not depend on the mode expansion, the hyperbolicity and causality of the tensor perturbation equation can be investigated for every mode of the perturbation. Based on the master equation, we study the hyperbolicity and causality for all relavent vacuum solutions of this theor…
The topology of the causal boundary for standard static spacetimes--spacetimes time-invariantly conformal to a metric product of the Lorentz line and a Riemannian manifold--is studied in depth. As this is given in terms of a set of real-valued functions on the Riemannian factor, one could use a function-space topology, but physical reasons recommend a chronological topology instead. The function-space topology has a simple product structure, while the chronological topology might not. This paper examines when the chronological topology coincides with the function-space topology and when it has…
We give several equivalent conditions that characterize the 2+2 warped spacetimes: imposing the existence of a Killing-Yano tensor $A$ subject to complementary algebraic restrictions; in terms of the projector $v$ (or of the canonical 2-form $U$) associated with the 2-planes of the warped product. These planes are principal planes of the Weyl and/or Ricci tensors and can be explicitly obtained from them. Therefore, we obtain the necessary and sufficient (local) conditions for a metric tensor to be a 2+2 warped product. These conditions exclusively involve explicit concomitants of the Riemann t…
If we consider the spacetime manifold as product of a constant curvature 2-sphere (hypersphere) and a 2-space, then solution of the Einstein equation requires that the latter must also be of constant curvature. There exist only two solutions for classical matter distribution which are given by the Nariai (anti) metric describing an Einstein space and the Bertotti - Robinson (anti) metric describing a uniform electric field. These two solutions are transformable into each other by letting the timelike convergence density change sign. The hyperspherical solution is anti of the spherical one and …
To make sense of quantum field theory in an arbitrary (globally hyperbolic) curved spacetime, the theory must be formulated in a local and covariant manner in terms of locally measureable field observables. Since a generic curved spacetime does not possess symmetries or a unique notion of a vacuum state, the theory also must be formulated in a manner that does not require symmetries or a preferred notion of a ``vacuum state'' and ``particles''. We propose such a formulation of quantum field theory, wherein the operator product expansion (OPE) of the quantum fields is elevated to a fundamental …
According to a variant of the hoop conjecture, if we localize two particles within the Schwarzschild radius corresponding to their center of mass energy, then a black hole will form. Despite a large body of work on the formation of primordial black holes, so far this conjecture has not been generalized to expanding spacetimes. We derive a formula which gives the distance within which two particles must be localized to give a black hole, and which crucially depends on the expansion rate of the background space. In the limit of a very slow expansion, we recover the flat spacetime case. In the op…
In the braneworld scenario ordinary standard model matter and on-gravitational fields are confined by some trapping mechanism to the 4-dimensional universe constituting the D3-branes which are embedded in a (4 + n)-dimensional manifold referred to as the bulk (n being the number of extra dimensions). The notion of particle confinement is necessary for theories with non-compact extra dimensions, otherwise, the particles would escape from our 4-dimensional world along unseen directions. In this paper, we have considered a five-dimensional warped product space-time having an exponential warping f…
Quantum theory of a test field on a quantum cosmological spacetime may be viewed as a theory of the test field on an emergent classical background. In such a case, the resulting dressed metric for the field propagation is a function of the quantum fluctuations of the original geometry. When the backreaction is negligible, massive modes can experience an anisotropic Bianchi type I background. The field modes propagating on such a quantum-gravity-induced spacetime can then unveil interesting phenomenological consequences of the super-Planckian scales, such as gravitational particle production. T…
In this paper we have used the dynamical systems analysis to study the dynamics of a five-dimensional universe in the form of a warped product spacetime with a spacelike dynamic extra dimension. We have decomposed the geodesic equations to get the motion along the extra dimension and have studied the associated dynamical system when the cross-diagonal element of the Einstein tensor vanishes, and also when it is non-vanishing. In the first case, introducing the concept of an energy function along the phase path in terms of the extra-dimensional coordinate, we have examined how the energy functi…
For $2+1$ spacetime dimensions, we derive sufficient conditions for the twisting function in a twisted product spacetime, such that there is a global foliation by spacelike CMC surfaces.
We examine hidden symmetry and its relation to the separability of the Maxwell equation on the Wahlquist spacetime. After seeing that the Wahlquist spacetime is a type-D spacetime whose repeated principal null directions are shear-free and geodesic, we show that the spacetime admits three gauged conformal Killing-Yano (GCKY) tensors which are in a relation with torsional conformal Killing-Yano tensors. As a by-product, we obtain an ordinary CKY tensor. We also show that thanks to the GCKY tensors, the Maxwell equation reduces to three Debye equations, which are scalar-type equations, and two o…
I describe the Kaluza-Klein approach to general relativity of 4-dimensional spacetimes. This approach is based on the (2,2)-fibration of a generic 4-dimensional spacetime, which is viewed as a local product of a (1+1)-dimensional base manifold and a 2-dimensional fibre space. It is shown that the metric coefficients can be decomposed into sets of fields, which transform as a tensor field, gauge fields, and scalar fields with respect to the infinite dimensional group of the diffeomorphisms of the 2-dimensional fibre space. I discuss a few applications of this formalism.
The scalar invariant, I, constructed from the "square" of the first covariant derivative of the curvature tensor is used to probe the local geometry of static spacetimes which are also Einstein spaces. We obtain an explicit form of this invariant, exploiting the local warp-product structure of a 4-dimensional static spacetime, $~^{(3)}Σ\times_{f} \reals$, where $^{(3)}Σ$ is the Riemannian hypersurface orthogonal to a timelike Killing vector field with norm given by a positive function, $f$ on $^{(3)}Σ$. For a static spacetime which is an Einstein space, it is shown that the locally measurable …
In this Letter, we have examined the thermodynamic volume products for spherically symmetric and axisymmetric spacetimes in the framework of \emph{extended phase space}. Such volume products usually formulated in terms of the outer horizon~(${\cal H}^{+}$) and the inner horizon~(${\cal H}^{-}$) of black hole ~ (BH) spacetime. Besides volume product, the other thermodynamic formulations like \emph{volume sum, volume minus and volume division} are considered for a wide variety of spherically symmetric spacetime and axisymmetric spacetimes. Like area~(or entropy) product of multihorizons, the mas…
We consider the operator product expansion for quantum field theories on general analytic 4-dimensional curved spacetimes within an axiomatic framework. We prove under certain general, model-independent assumptions that such an expansion necessarily has to be invariant under a simultaneous reversal of parity, time, and charge (PCT) in the following sense: The coefficients in the expansion of a product of fields on a curved spacetime with a given choice of time and space orientation are equal (modulo complex conjugation) to the coefficients for the product of the corresponding charge conjugate …
A complete family of non-expanding impulsive waves in spacetimes which are the direct product of two 2-spaces of constant curvature is presented. In addition to previously investigated impulses in Minkowski, (anti-)Nariai and Bertotti-Robinson universes, a new explicit class of impulsive waves which propagate in the exceptional electrovac Plebanski-Hacyan spacetimes with a cosmological constant Lambda is constructed. In particular, pure gravitational waves generated by null particles with an arbitrary multipole structure are described. The metrics are impulsive members of a more general family…
We present an algorithm for constructing the Wilson operator product expansion (OPE) for perturbative interacting quantum field theory in general Lorentzian curved spacetimes, to arbitrary orders in perturbation theory. The remainder in this expansion is shown to go to zero at short distances in the sense of expectation values in arbitrary Hadamard states. We also establish a number of general properties of the OPE coefficients: (a) they only depend (locally and covariantly) upon the spacetime metric and coupling constants, (b) they satisfy an associativity property, (c) they satisfy a renorma…
In this article spacelike hypersurfaces immersed in twisted product spacetimes $I\times_f F$ with complete fiber are studied. Several conditions ensuring global hyperbolicity are presented, as well as a relation that needs to hold on each spacelike hypersurface in $I\times_f F$ for it to be a simple warped product. When the fiber is assumed to be closed (compact and without boundary) and the ambient spacetime has a suitable expanding behaviour, non-existence results for constant mean curvature hypersurfaces are obtained. Under the same hypothesis, a characterization of compact maximal hypersur…
In this proceeding we consider a massive charged scalar field in a uniform electric field background in a de~Sitter spacetime (dS). We compute the in-vacuum expectation value of the trace of the energy-momentum tensor for the created Schwinger pairs, and using adiabatic subtraction scheme the trace is regularized. The effect of the Schwinger pair creation on the evolution of the Hubble constant is investigated. We find that the production of the semiclassical pairs leads to a decay of the Hubble constant. Whereas, the production of a light scalar field in the weak electric field regime leads t…
We use the computer algebra system \textit{GRTensorII} to examine invariants polynomial in the Riemann tensor for class $B$ warped product spacetimes - those which can be decomposed into the coupled product of two 2-dimensional spaces, one Lorentzian and one Riemannian, subject to the separability of the coupling: $ds^2 = ds_{Σ_1}^2 (u,v) + C(x^γ)^2 ds_{Σ_2}^2 (θ,ϕ)$ with $C(x^γ)^2=r(u,v)^2 w(θ,ϕ)^2$ and $sig(Σ_1)=0, sig(Σ_2)=2ε(ε=\pm 1)$ for class $B_{1}$ spacetimes and $sig(Σ_1)=2ε, sig(Σ_2)=0$ for class $B_{2}$. Although very special, these spaces include many of interest, for example, all …
Universal spacetimes are exact solutions to all higher-order theories of gravity. We study these spacetimes in four dimensions and provide necessary and sufficient conditions for universality for all Petrov types except of type II. We show that all universal spacetimes in four dimensions are algebraically special and Kundt. Petrov type D universal spacetimes are necessarily direct products of two 2-spaces of constant and equal curvature. Furthermore, type II universal spacetimes necessarily possess a null recurrent direction and they admit the above type D direct product metrics as a limit. Su…
We present a new method for embedding a causal set into an interval of Minkowski spacetime. The method uses spacetime volumes for causally related elements to define causal set analogs of Minkowski inner products. These are used to construct matrices of inner products which are then factored using the singular value decomposition to give coordinates in Minkowski spacetime. Results are presented showing good quality embeddings into Minkowski spacetime for dimensions d=2,3,4. The method applies in any dimension and does not require spacelike distances to be used as an input. It offers a new way …
We establish the existence of local, covariant time ordered products of local Wick polynomials for a free scalar field in curved spacetime. Our time ordered products satisfy all of the hypotheses of our previous uniqueness theorem, so our construction essentially completes the analysis of the existence, uniqueness and renormalizability of the perturbative expansion for nonlinear quantum field theories in curved spacetime. As a byproduct of our analysis, we derive a scaling expansion of the time ordered products about the total diagonal that expresses them as a sum of products of polynomials in…
Several calculations in conformally static spacetimes rely on the introduction of an ultrastatic background. I describe the general properties of ultrastatic spacetimes, and then focus on the problem of whether a given spacetime can be ultrastatic, or conformally ultrastatic, in more than one way. I show that the first possibility arises iff the spacetime is a product containing a Minkowskian factor, and that the second arises iff the spatial sections are conformal to a product space.
We consider spacetimes consisting of a manifold with Lorentzian metric and a weight function or scalar field. These spacetimes admit a Bakry-Émery-Ricci tensor which is a natural generalization of the Ricci tensor. We impose an energy condition on the Bakry-Émery-Ricci tensor and obtain singularity theorems of a cosmological type, both for zero and for positive cosmological constant. That is, we find conditions under which every timelike geodesic is incomplete. These conditions are given by "open" inequalities, so we examine the borderline (equality) cases and show that certain singularities a…
The loop quantum dynamics of Kantowski-Sachs spacetime and the interior of higher genus black hole spacetimes with a cosmological constant has some peculiar features not shared by various other spacetimes in loop quantum cosmology. As in the other cases, though the quantum geometric effects resolve the physical singularity and result in a non-singular bounce, after the bounce a spacetime with small spacetime curvature does not emerge in either the subsequent backward or the forward evolution. Rather, in the asymptotic limit the spacetime manifold is a product of two constant curvature spaces. …
For free fields, pair creation in expanding universes is associated with the building up of correlations that lead to nonseparable states, i.e., quantum mechanically entangled ones. For dissipative fields, i.e., fields coupled to an environment, there is a competition between the squeezing of the state and the coupling to the external bath. We compute the final coherence level for dissipative fields that propagate in a two-dimensional de Sitter space, and we characterize the domain in parameter space where the state remains nonseparable. We then apply our analysis to (analogue) Hawking radiati…
A generalized Robertson-Walker spacetime is the warped product with base an open interval of the real line endowed with the opposite of its metric and base any Riemannian manifold. The family of generalized Robertson-Walker spacetimes widely extends the one of classical Robertson-Walker spacetimes. In this article we prove a very simple characterization of generalized Robertson-Walker spacetimes; namely, a Lorentzian manifold is a generalized Robertson-Walker spacetime if and only if it admits a timelike concircular vector field.
In order to have well defined rules for the perturbative calculation of quantities of interest in an interacting quantum field theory in curved spacetime, it is necessary to construct Wick polynomials and their time ordered products for the noninteracting theory. A construction of these quantities has recently been given by Brunetti, Fredenhagen, and Kohler, and by Brunetti and Fredenhagen, but they did not impose any ``locality'' or ``covariance'' condition in their constructions. As a consequence, their construction of time ordered products contained ambiguities involving arbitrary functions…
We consider simple extensions of noncommutativity from flat to curved spacetime. One possibility is to have a generalization of the Moyal product with a covariantly constant noncommutative tensor $θ^{μν}$. In this case the spacetime symmetry is restricted to volume preserving diffeomorphisms which also preserve $θ^{μν}$. Another possibility is an extension of the Kontsevich product to curved spacetime. In both cases the noncommutative product is nonassociative. We find the the order $θ^2$ noncommutative correction to the Newtonian potential in the case of a covariantly constant $θ^{μν}$. It is…
A covariant Poisson bracket and an associated covariant star product in the sense of deformation quantization are defined on the algebra of tensor-valued differential forms on a symplectic manifold, as a generalization of similar structures that were recently defined on the algebra of (scalar-valued) differential forms. A covariant star product of arbitrary smooth tensor fields is obtained as a special case. Finally, we study covariant star products on a more general Poisson manifold with a linear connection, first for smooth functions and then for smooth tensor fields of any type. Some observ…
In this work we analytically obtain the quasinormal spectrum for the gravitational perturbation on a higher-dimensional generalization of the Nariai spacetime that is comprised of the direct product of the two-dimensional de Sitter space with several two-spheres. A key step in order to attain this result is to use a suitable basis for the angular functions depending on the rank of the tensorial degree of freedom that one needs to describe. Here we define such a basis, which is a generalization of the tensor spherical harmonics that is suited for spaces that are the product of several spaces of…
