The loop-current state discovered in the pseudogap phase of cuprates breaks time reversal symmetry and lowers the point group symmetry of the crystal. The order parameter and the magnetic structure within each unit cell which is associated with it can be described by a toroidal moment parallel to the copper-oxide planes. We discuss lattice point group symmetry of the magnetic structure. As an application, we discuss a few effects that necessarily accompany order parameter in the pseudogap phase. The magnitude estimated for these specific effects makes them hard to observe because they rely on the small magnetic fields associated with the order parameter. Effects, associated with the electronic energies are much larger. Some of them have already been discussed.
A proposal to test the proposed time-reversal and inversion breaking phase in the Pseudogap region of the Cuprate compounds through the variation of Second-harmonic generation intensity with temperature and polarization and angle of incidence is presented.
We discuss the necessary symmetry conditions and the different ways in which they can be physically realized for the occurrence of ferromagnetism accompanying the loop current orbital magnetic order observed by polarized neutron-diffraction experiments or indeed any other conceivable principal order in the under-doped phase of cuprates. We contrast the Kerr effect experiments in single crystals observing ferromagnetism with the direct magnetization measurements in large powder samples, which do not observe it. We also suggest experiments to resolve the differences among the experiments, all of…
We present evidence for the existence of a spontaneous instability towards an orbital loop-current phase in a multiorbital Hubbard model for the CuO$_2$ planes in cuprates. Contrary to the previously proposed $θ_{II}$ phase with intra-unit cell currents, the identified instability is towards a staggered pattern of intertwined current loops. The orbitally resolved current pattern thereby shares its staggered character with the proposal of d-density wave order. The current pattern will cause a Fermi surface reconstruction and the opening of a pseudogap. We argue that the pseudogap phase with tim…
We investigate the strong influence of the $Θ_{II}$-loop-current order on both unidirectional and bidirectional d-wave charge-density-wave/pair-density-wave (CDW/PDW) composite orders along axial momenta $(\pm Q_0,0)$ and $(0,\pm Q_0)$ that emerge in an effective hot spot model departing from the three-band Emery model relevant to the phenomenology of the cuprate superconductors. This study is motivated by the compelling evidence that the $Θ_{II}$-loop-current order described by this model may explain groundbreaking experiments such as spin-polarized neutron scattering performed in these mater…
The pseudogap phenomena induced by the SC fluctuation are investigated in details. We perform a calculation beyond the 1-loop approximation. The SC fluctuation is microscopically derived on the basis of the repulsive Hubbard model. The vertex corrections are collected in the infinite order with use of the quasi-static approximation. The single-particle excitations, NMR 1/T_{1}T, spin susceptibility and superconducting transition temperature are discussed. The important role of the vertex correction is pointed out for the single particle spectral function. On the other hand, the validity of the…
Unconventional symmetry-breaking phenomena due to nontrivial order parameters attract increasing attention in strongly correlated electron systems. Here, we predict theoretically the occurrence of nanoscale spontaneous spin-current, called the spin loop-current (sLC) order, as a promising origin of the pseudogap and electronic nematicity in cuprates. We reveal that the sLC is driven by the odd-parity electron-hole condensation that are mediated by transverse spin fluctuations around the pseudogap temperature $T^*$. At the same temperature, odd-parity magnon pair condensation occurs. The sLC or…
Changes of the 400 cm^{-1} peak in the c-axis conductivity of underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.6 upon application of a parallel magnetic field reported by Kojima et al. are shown to be consistent with the model where the peak is due to the superfluid. Results of our calculations of the c-axis response of bilayer compounds with well defined bilayer-split bands are presented and discussed. For moderate values of the bilayer splitting (Delta E comparable to 2Delta_{max}) the spectra of the superconducting state exhibit an additional mode which is due to the condensate and similar to the one of earlier phenom…
The paper briefly surveys theoretical models for the polar Kerr effect (PKE) and time-reversal symmetry breaking in the pseudogap phase of cuprate superconductors. By elimination, the most promising candidate is the tilted loop-current model, obtained from the Simon-Varma model by tilting one triangular loop up and another one down toward the apical oxygens. The model is consistent with the PKE, spin-polarized neutron scattering, and optical anisotropy measurements. Spontaneous currents in this model flow between the in-plane and apical oxygens in such a manner that each oxygen belongs to one …
Loop current order has been reported in the pseudogap regime of a few cuprate systems in polarized neutron scattering experiments. Here we study several observable consequences of such order in the d-wave superconducting state at low T. The symmetries of the loop order removes degeneracy between momenta k and -k. Consequently there is a remnant Bogoliubov Fermi surface in the superconducting state. Bounds on the possible existence of such a Fermi surface may be placed from existing data. Detecting such a Fermi surface will be a very useful confirmation of the existence of loop order in various…
We compare the one-loop functional renormalization group results for the cuprates and the iron pnictides. Interestingly a coherent picture suggesting that antiferromagnetic correlation causes pairing for both materials emerges.
We examine the possibility that the large Nernst signal observed in the pseudogap regime of hole-doped cuprates originates from quasiparticle transport in a state with d-density wave (DDW) order, proposed by S. Chakravarty et al. [Phys. Rev. B 63, 094503 (2001)]. We find that the Nernst coefficient can be moderately enhanced in magnitude by DDW order, and is generally of negative sign. Thus, the quasiparticles of the DDW state cannot account for the large and positive Nernst signal observed in the pseudogap phase of the cuprates. However, the general considerations outlined in this paper may b…
The theory of the long range order of orbital current loops in the pseudogap phase is generalized to include the effects of spin-orbit scattering. It is shown by symmetry arguments as well as by microscopic calculation that a specific in-plane spin-order must necessarily accompany the loop-current order. The microscopic theory also allows an estimate of the magnitude of the ordered spin-moment. Exchange coupling between the generated spins further modifies the in-plane direction of the spin moments. The structure and form factor for the spin and orbital moments combined with the induced spin o…
We propose a novel chiral order parameter to explain the unusual polar Kerr effect in underdoped cuprates. It is based on the loop-current model by Varma, which is characterized by the in-plane anapole moment N and exhibits the magnetoelectric effect. We propose a helical structure where the vector N^(n) in the layer n is twisted by the angle pi/2 relative to N^(n-1), thus breaking inversion symmetry. We show that coupling between magnetoelectric terms in the neighboring layers for this structure produces optical gyrotropy, which results in circular dichroism and the polar Kerr effect.
In many quantum materials, strong electron correlations lead to the emergence of new states of matter. In particular, the study in the last decades of the complex phase diagram of high temperature superconducting cuprates highlighted intra-unit-cell electronic instabilities breaking discrete Ising-like symmetries, while preserving the lattice translation invariance. Polarized neutron diffraction experiments have provided compelling evidences supporting a new form of intra-unit-cell magnetism, emerging concomitantly with the so-called pseudogap state of these materials. This observation is curr…
Atomic repulsion $U_d$ on the Cu site in high T$_c$ cuprates is large but, surprisingly, some important properties are consistent with moderate couplings. The time dependent perturbation theory with slave particles is therefore formulated in the $U_d\to\infty$ limit for the metallic phase in the physically relevant regime of the three-band Emery model. The basic theory possesses the local gauge invariance asymptotically but its convergence is fast when the average occupation of the Cu-site is small. The leading orders exhibit the band narrowing and the dynamic Cu/O$_2$ charge transfer disorder…
We present a possible explanation for a recently observed magnetic field induced charge order in cuprate superconductors (Edkins et al.~arXiv:1802.04673 [cond-mat.supr-con]). We argue that it arises from the reorganization of spin-vortex-induced loop current (SVILC) pattern due to supercurrent-flow caused by the magnetic field. The reorganization is from the most stable tiling of $4a times 6a$ spin-vortex quartets ($a$ is the lattice constant in the CuO$_2$ plane, and a spin-vortex quartet is stable of unit of spin-vortices that contains four holes, four spin-vortices, and four SVILCs) to that…
Both theoretical considerations and experimental data point to a more complicated nature of the valence hole states in doped cuprates than it is predicted by Zhang-Rice model. Actually, we deal with a competition of conventional hybrid Cu 3d-O 2p $b_{1g}\propto d_{x^2 -y^2}$ state and purely oxygen nonbonding state with $e_{u}x,y \propto p_{x,y}$ symmetry. The latter reveals a non-quenched Ising-like orbital moment that gives rise to a novel spinless purely oxygen scenario of the magnetic response in doped cuprates with the oxygen localized orbital magnetic moments of the order of tenths of Bo…
We report on far infrared measurements of interplane conductivity for underdoped single-crystal YBa2Cu3Oy in magnetic field and situate these new data within earlier work on two other high-Tc cuprate superconductors, La(2-x)SrxCuO4 and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+d). The three systems have displayed apparently disparate electrodynamic responses in the Josephson vortex state formed when magnetic field H is applied parallel to the CuO2 planes. Specifically, there is discrepancy in the number and field dependence of longitudinal modes observed. We compare and contrast these findings with several models of the…
We study the emergence of charge ordered phases within a pi-loop current (piLC) model for the pseudogap based on a three-band model for underdoped cuprate superconductors. Loop currents and charge ordering are driven by distinct components of the short-range Coulomb interactions: loop currents result from the repulsion between nearest-neighbor copper and oxygen orbitals, while charge order results from repulsion between neighboring oxygen orbitals. We find that the leading piLC phase has an antiferromagnetic pattern similar to previously discovered staggered flux phases, and that it emerges ab…
Using mean-field theory, we illustrate the long-range Coulomb effect on the antiferromagnetism in the electron-doped cuprates. Because of the Coulomb exchange effect, the magnitude of the effective next nearest neighbor hopping parameter increases appreciably with increasing the electron doping concentration, raising the frustration to the antiferromagnetic ordering. The Fermi surface evolution in the electron-doped cuprate Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ and the doping dependence of the onset temperature of the antiferromagnetic pseudogap can be reasonably explained by the present consideration.
In light of the new experimental and theoretical important developments in high-$T_c$ superconductivity, we revisit the fermionic hot-spot model relevant to the phenomenology of the cuprates. We extend previous results by means of a complete two-loop order renormalization group (RG) framework. Here, we explicitly study the effect of the charge-density-wave (CDW) order parameter with a $d$-wave form factor with the experimentally observed modulation $(\pm Q_0,0)$ and $(0,\pm Q_0)$ at the infrared-stable nontrivial fixed point obtained previously for this model. Additionally, we proceed to inves…
The phenomenological Green's function developed in the works of Yang, Rice and Zhang has been very successful in understanding many of the anomalous superconducting properties of the deeply underdoped cuprates. It is based on considerations of the resonating valence bond spin liquid approximation and is designed to describe the underdoped regime of the cuprates. Here we emphasize the region of doping, $x$, just below the quantum critical point at which the pseudogap develops. In addition to Luttinger hole pockets centered around the nodal direction, there are electron pockets near the antinode…
We present a theory for the onset of spin density wave order in the superconducting ground state of the cuprates. We compute the scaling dimensions of allowed perturbations of a `relativistic' fixed point with O(4)xO(3) symmetry, including those associated with the fermionic nodal Bogoliubov quasiparticles. Analyses of up to six loops show that all perturbations with square lattice symmetry are likely irrelevant. We demonstrate that the fermion spectral functions are primarily damped by the coupling to fluctuations of a composite field with Ising nematic order. We also discuss the influence of…
We present estimates in the Hubbard and Heisenberg models for the spectral weight in magnetic neutron scattering experiments on the cuprates. With the aid of spin-wave theory and the time dependent Gutzwiller approximation we discuss how the spectral weight is distributed among the different channels and between high and low energies. In addition to the well known total moment sum rule we discuss sum rules for each component of the dynamical structure factor tensor which are peculiar for spin 1/2 systems. The various factors that reduce the spectral weight at the relevant energies are singled …
The renormalization of the magnetic field penetration depth $λ$ owing to the electron-electron correlation is discussed with its application to high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates. The formula for the current carried by quasiparticle with the Umklapp scattering is derived, on the basis of which we investigate how the value of $λ^{-2}$ deviates from that of $n/m^*$ where $n$ and $m^*$ are the carrier density and the effective mass respectively. Although this deviation is small in the case of weak momentum dependence of the vertex, this is large and negative owing to the non-negligible value of the backfl…
There are growing experimental evidence which indicate discrete symmetry breaking like time-reversal ($\mathcal{T}$), parity ($\mathcal{P}$) and C$_{4}$ lattice rotation in the pseudo-gap state of the under-doped copper-oxide based (cuprate) superconductors. The discrete symmetry breaking manifests a true phase transition to an ordered state. A detailed thermodynamic understanding of these orders can answer various puzzles related to the nature of the transition at the pseudo-gap temperature T$^*$. In this work, we investigate thermodynamic signature of $\mathcal{T-P}$ symmetry breaking consid…
An intrinsic physical mechanism, based on the doping evolution of the Fermi surface (FS), is explored to reconcile the contradictory experimental results on the superconducting (SC) pairing symmetry in electron-doped cuprates. It is argued that the FS pocket around $(π/2,π/2)$ has not yet formed until doping reaches about the optimal value. Therefore, in the underdoped regime, even if the SC order parameter is $d$ wave which vanishes along the line $k_x=k_y$, the quasiparticle excitation gap is still finite and looks s-wave-like due to the absence of the FS across that line. This makes it poss…
We calculate the screening charge density distribution due to a point charge, such as that of a positive muon ($μ^+$), placed between the planes of a highly anisotropic layered metal. In underdoped hole cuprates the screening charge converts the charge density in the metallic-plane unit cells in the vicinity of the $μ^+$ to nearly its value in the insulating state. The current-loop ordered state observed by polarized neutron diffraction then vanishes in such cells, and also in nearby cells over a distance of order the intrinsic correlation length of the loop-ordered state. This in turn strongl…
In this brief report an attempt is made for a 'mise-a-point' of the subject of the phase fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter above Tc in cuprates, particularly as they appear in underdoped compounds. Measurements of torque magnetometry, Nernst effect and isothermal diamagnetic magnetization curves published in the last years are taken into consideration. Although by different experimental approaches and in different magnetic field ranges it can be stated that vortex-antivortex excitations and phase fluctuations among islands of local non-zero order parameter lacking of long ran…
Even before the experimental discovery of spin- and charge-stripe order in La$_{2-x-y}$Nd$_y$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ at x = 1/8, stripe formation was predicted from theoretical considerations. Nevertheless, a consistent description of the complex coexistence of stripe order with superconductivity has remained a challenge. Here we introduce a Hartree-Fock decoupling scheme which unifies previous approaches and allows for a detailed analysis of the competition between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in real and momentum space. We identify two distinct parameter regimes…
Measurements of the thermal Hall conductivity in hole-doped cuprates have shown that phonons acquire chirality in a magnetic field, both in the pseudogap phase and in the Mott insulator state. The microscopic mechanism at play is still unclear. A number of theoretical proposals are being considered, including skew scattering of phonons by various defects, the coupling of phonons to spins, and a state of loop-current order with the appropriate symmetries, but more experimental information is required to constrain theoretical scenarios. Here we present our study of the thermal Hall conductivity …
Unveiling the nature of the pseudogap and its relation to both superconductivity and antiferromagnetic Mott insulators, the pairing mechanism, and a non-Fermi liquid phase is a key issue for understanding high temperature superconductivity in cuprates. A number of experimental results gathered especially in recently years have revealed an unexpected inhomogeneous nature of cuprates at the nanoscale, indicating the fundamental inapplicability of the conventional theories based on homogeneous systems. Here we show a microscopic model of pseudogap and pairing mechanisms on the basis of the consid…
Andreev interferometry - the sensitivity of the tunneling current to spatial variations in the local superconducting order at an interface - is proposed as a probe of the spatial structure of the phase correlations in the pseudogap state of the cuprate superconductors. To demonstrate this idea theoretically, a simple tunneling model is considered, via which the tunneling current is related to the equilibrium phase-phase correlator in the pseudogap state. These considerations suggest that measurement of the low-voltage conductance through mesoscopic contacts of varying areas provides a scheme f…
The minimal theory of spin of gapless quasiparticles coupled to fluctuating vortex defects in the phase of the d-wave superconducting order parameter at T=0 is studied. With the proliferation of the vortex loops the theory reduces to the previuosly studied QED3, with its concomitant spin-density-wave (chiral) instability. We find a single superconductor-insulator phase transition, which may be fluctuation induced first-order, at which vortices condense and the chiral symmetry for fermions dynamically breaks. We compute the spin-spin correlation function deep in the fluctuating superconducting …
Despite the structural resemblance of certain cuprate and nickelate parent compounds there is a striking spread of $T_c$ among such transition metal oxide superconductors. We adopt a minimal two-orbital $e_g$ model which covers cuprates and nickelate heterostructures in different parametric limits, and analyse its superconducting instabilities. The joint consideration of interactions, doping, Fermiology, and in particular the $e_g$ orbital splitting allows us to explain the strongly differing pairing propensities in cuprate and nickelate superconductors.
Following our recent conjecture to model the phenomenona of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity by quantum symmetry groups, we discuss in the present note the choice of the classical symmetry group underlying the quantum group. Keeping in mind the degrees of freedom arising from spin, charge, and lattice we choose the classical group as SO(7). This choice is also motivated to accomodate the several competing phases which are or may be present in these and related materials, such as stripe phase [mesoscopically ordered phase], Luttinger liquids, nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquids, char…
We study a quasi-2D classical Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson effective field theory in the presence of quenched disorder in which incommensurate charge-density wave and superconducting orders are intertwined. The disorder precludes long-range charge-density wave order, but not superconducting or nematic order. We select three representative sets of input parameters and compute the corresponding charge-density wave structure factors using both large-$N$ techniques and classical Monte Carlo simulations. Where nematicity and superconductivity coexist at low temperature, the peak height of the charge-dens…
The highly distinctive phonon self-energy dependences on the wave vector, calculated respectively for the static and dynamic stripe phase models of the underdoped cuprates are presented. The negative values of the real part of the on-stripe holes polarization loop lead to appearance of localized vibration states in the presence of well-separated stripes, relevant for underdoped cuprates. The localized modes split below the bare optical phonon frequencies exhibiting strong ``softening effect''. The calculated gap between localized and propagating phonon frequencies is practically doping indepen…
Earlier we have proposed a new approach to the analysis of superconducting phase diagrams for cuprates and pnictides and have shown that the positions of superconducting domes on the diagrams can be predicted with high accuracy proceeding from only the crystal structure of a particular compound. The proposed approach uses the concept of the self-localization of doped carriers due to their formation of trion complexes that represent a bound state of the doped carrier and charge transfer excitons emerging under its influence. Here, as exemplified by cuprates, we show that the use of the proposed…
There is evidence that the pseudogap phase in the cuprates breaks time-reversal symmetry. Here we show that pair density wave (PDW) states give rise to a translational invariant nonsuperconducting order parameter that breaks time-reversal and parity symmetries, but preserves their product. This secondary order parameter has a different origin, but shares the same symmetry properties as a magnetoelectric loop current order that has been proposed earlier in the context of the cuprates to explain the appearance of intracell magnetic order. We further show that, due to fluctuations, this secondary…
It is suggested that the center vortex confinement mechanism, familiar in hadronic physics, may have some relevance to high-T$_\text{c}$ phenomena. We focus specifically on the transition from the superconducting phase to the pseudogap phase. There is evidence of a vortex liquid in the latter phase, in which the pairing responsible for superconductivity still exists, but superconductivity itself does not. An analogy, drawn from particle physics, may be the Higgs to confinement phase transition in an SU(N) gauge theory, where the confined phase is a vortex liquid, and the Higgs phase is a phase…
The existence of the mysterious pseudo-gap state in the phase diagram of copper oxide superconductors and its interplay with unconventional {\it d-wave} superconductivity has been a long standing issue for more than a decade. There is now a growing number of experimental indications that the pseudo-gap phase actually corresponds to a symmetry breaking state. In his theory for cuprates, C. M. Varma proposes that the pseudo-gap is a new state of matter associated with the spontaneous appearance of circulating current loops within $\rm CuO_2$ unit cell. This intra-unit-cell order breaks time reve…
We study the fate of the so-called $Θ_{II}$-loop-current order that breaks both time-reversal and parity symmetries in a two-dimensional hot spot model with antiferromagnetically mediated interactions, using Fermi surfaces relevant to the phenomenology of the cuprate superconductors. We start from a three-band Emery model describing the hopping of holes in the CuO$_{2}$ plane that includes two hopping parameters $t_{pp}$ and $t_{pd}$, local on-site Coulomb interactions $U_{d}$ and $U_{p}$ and nearest-neighbor $V_{pd}$ couplings between the fermions in the copper [Cu$(3d_{x^{2}-y^{2}})$] and ox…
One of the canons of condensed matter physics is the Onsager Reciprocity principle in systems in which the Hamiltonian commutes with the time-reversal operator. Recent results of measurements of the Nernst coefficient in underdoped YBa_2Cu_30_{6+x}, together with the measurements of the anisotropy of conductivity and the inferred anisotropy of the thermopower, imply that this principle is violated. The probable violation and its temperature dependence are shown to be consistent with the Loop-current phase which has been directly observed in other experiments. The violation is related directly …
The formation of Cooper pairs, a bound state of two electrons of opposite spin and momenta by exchange of a phonon [1], is a defining feature of conventional superconductivity. In the cuprate high temperature superconductors, even though it has been established that the superconducting state also consists of Cooper pairs, the pairing mechanism remains intensely debated. Here we investigate superconducting pairing in the Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ(Bi2212) cuprate by employing spectral functions obtained directly from angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) experiments as input to the Bethe-Salpeter gap equat…
Topological states of matter are at the root of some of the most fascinating phenomena in condensed matter physics. Here we argue that skyrmions in the pseudo-spin space related to an emerging SU(2) symmetry enlighten many mysterious properties of the pseudogap phase in under-doped cuprates. We detail the role of the SU(2) symmetry in controlling the phase diagram of the cuprates, in particular how a cascade of phase transitions explains the arising of the pseudogap, superconducting and charge modulation phases seen at low temperature. We specify the structure of the charge modulations inside …
It has been proposed that the pseudogap state of underdoped cuprate superconductors may be due to a transition to a phase which has circulating currents within each unit cell. Here, we use polarized neutron diffraction to search for the corresponding orbital moments in two samples of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ with doping levels $p=0.104$ and 0.123. In contrast to some other reports using polarized neutrons, but in agreement with nuclear magnetic resonance and muon spin rotation measurements, we find no evidence for the appearance of magnetic order below 300 K. Thus, our experiment sugg…
We argue based on theoretical considerations and analysis of experimental data that quasiparticle excitations near the nodes determine the low temperature properties in the superconducting state of cuprates. Quantum effects of phase fluctuations are shown to be quantitatively important, but thermal effects are small for $T \ll T_c$. An anisotropic superfluid Fermi liquid phenomenology is presented for the effect of quasiparticle interactions on the temperature and doping dependence of the low $T$ penetration depth.
We report low temperature muon spin relaxation (muSR) measurements of the high-transition-temperature (Tc) cuprate superconductors Bi{2+x}Sr{2-x}CaCu2O{8+δ} and YBa2Cu3O6.57, aimed at detecting the mysterious intra-unit cell (IUC) magnetic order that has been observed by spin polarized neutron scattering in the pseudogap phase of four different cuprate families. A lack of confirmation by local magnetic probe methods has raised the possibility that the magnetic order fluctuates slowly enough to appear static on the time scale of neutron scattering, but too fast to affect $μ$SR or nuclear magnet…
A rare combination of strong spin-orbit coupling and electron-electron correlations makes the iridate Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ a promising host for novel electronic phases of matter. The resemblance of its crystallographic, magnetic and electronic structures to La$_2$CuO$_4$, as well as the emergence upon doping of a pseudogap region and a low temperature $d$-wave gap, has particularly strengthened analogies to cuprate high-$T_c$ superconductors. However, unlike the cuprate phase diagram that features a plethora of broken symmetry phases in a pseudogap region that include charge density wa…
We study the nature of the two-dimensional quantum critical point separating two phases with and without long-range spin-density-wave order, which has been recently observed in cuprate superconductors. We consider the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson Hamiltonian associated with the spin-density critical modes, perform a mean-field analysis of the phase diagram, and study the corresponding renormalization-group flow in two different perturbative schemes at five and six loops, respectively. The analysis supports the existence of a stable fixed point in the full theory whose basin of attraction includes sy…

The two-loop renormalization group (RG) calculation is considerably extended here for the two-dimensional (2D) fermionic effective field theory model, which includes only the so-called "hot spots" that are connected by the spin-density-wave (SDW) ordering wavevector on a Fermi surface generated by the 2D $t-t'$ Hubbard model at low hole doping. We compute the Callan-Symanzik RG equation up to two loops describing the flow of the single-particle Green's function, the corresponding spectral function, the Fermi velocity, and some of the most important order-parameter susceptibilities in the model…
We study three proposals for broken symmetry in the cuprate pseudogap - oxygen antiferromagnetism, $Θ_{II}$ orbital loop currents, and circulating currents involving apex oxygens - through numerical exploration of multi-orbital Hubbard models. Our numerically exact results show no evidence for the existence of oxygen antiferromagnetic order or the $Θ_{II}$ phase in the three-orbital Hubbard model. The model also fails to sustain an ordered current pattern even with the presence of additional apex oxygen orbitals. We thereby conclude that it is difficult to stabilize the aforementioned phases i…
To capture various experimental results in the pseudogap regime of the underdoped cuprate superconductors for temperature $T<T^{*}$, we propose a four-component pair density wave (PDW) state, in which all components compete with each other. Without random field disorders (RFD), only one of the PDW components survives. If the RFD is included, this state could become phase separated and consist of short range PDW stripes, in which two PDW components coexist but differ in magnitudes, resulting in charge density waves (CDW) and a time-reversal symmetry breaking order, in the form of loop current, …
Calculations of magnetic field produced by spin-vortex-induced loop currents in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ thin films using the particle-number conserving Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism
Intra-unit cell magnetic order has been observed in four different families of high-temperature superconductors from polarized neutron diffraction experiments and supported by several other techniques. That order, which does not break translation symmetry, is consistent with the predicted orbital moments generated by two microscopic loop currrents in each CuO$_2$ cell. Recently, using polarized neutron diffraction, Croft {\it et al} [Phys. Rev. B 96, 214504 (2017)] claim to find no evidence for such orbital loop currents in charge ordered ${\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}}$. Their experiment is done with…
