We study the regularity of the extremal solution of the semilinear biharmonic equation $βΔ^2 u-τΔu=\fracλ{(1-u)^2}$ on a ball $B \subset \R^N$, under Navier boundary conditions $u=Δu=0$ on $\partial B$, where $λ>0$ is a parameter, while $τ>0$, $β>0$ are fixed constants. It is known that there exists a $λ^{*}$ such that for $λ>λ^{*}$ there is no solution while for $λ<λ^{*}$ there is a branch of minimal solutions. Our main result asserts that the extremal solution $u^{*}$ is regular ($\sup_{B}u^{*}<1$) for $N\leq 8$ and $β, τ>0$ and it is singular ($\sup_{B}u^{*}=1$) for $N\geq 9$, $β>0$, and $τ>0$ with $\fracτβ$ small. Our proof for the singularity of extremal solutions in dimensions $N\geq 9$ is based on certain improved Hardy-Rellich inequalities.
We obtain heat kernel estimates for a class of fourth order non-uniformly elliptic operators in two dimensions. Contrary to existing results, the operators considered have symbols that are not strongly convex. This rises certain difficulties as it is known that, as opposed to the strongly convex case, there is no absolute exponential constant. Our estimates involve sharp constants and Finsler-type distances that are induced by the operator symbol. The main result is based on two general hypotheses, a weighted Sobolev inequalitry and an interpolation inequality, which are related to the singula…
We deal with nonlinear weighted biharmonic problem in the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^{4}$. The weight is of logarithm type. The nonlinearity is critical in view of Adam's inequalities in the weighted Sobolev space $W^{2,2}_{0}(B,w)$. We prove the existence of non trivial solutions via the critical point theory. The main difficulty is the loss of compactness due to the critical exponential growth of the nonlinear term $f$. We give a new growth condition and we point out its importance for checking the Palais-Smale compactness condition.
We prove some inequalities of Payne-Pólya-Weinberger-Yang type for eigenvalues of fourth-order elliptic operators in weighted divergence form on complete Riemannian manifolds which generalizes the corresponding result for the clamped plate problem. We also prove estimates for lower order eigenvalues that contain some of the estimates from the literature. As an application of our results, we obtain eigenvalues estimates for the bi-drifted Cheng-Yau operator.
In this paper, we study second-order and fourth-order elliptic problems which include not only a Poisson equation in the bulk but also an inhomogeneous Laplace--Beltrami equation on the boundary of the domain. The bulk and the surface PDE are coupled by a boundary condition that is either of Dirichlet or Robin type. We point out that both the Dirichlet and the Robin type boundary condition can be handled simultaneously through our formalism without having to change the framework. Moreover, we investigate the eigenvalue problems associated with these second-order and fourth-order elliptic syste…
In this article we prove the global existence of a unique strong solution to the initial boundary-value problem for a fourth-order exponential PDE. The equation we study was originally proposed to study the evolution of crystal surfaces, and was derived by applying a nonstandard scaling regime to a microscopic Markov jump process with Metropolis rates. Our investigation here finds that compared to the PDE's which use Arhenious rates, (and also have a fourth order exponential nonlinearity) the hyperbolic sine nonlinearity in our equation can offer much better control over the exponent term even…
We consider a class of fourth-order elliptic equations of Kirchhoff type with critical growth in $\mathbb{R}^N$. By using constrained minimization in the Nehari manifold, we establish sufficient conditions for the existence of nodal (that is, sign-changing) solutions.
Block copolymers play an important role in materials sciences and have found widespread use in many applications. From a mathematical perspective, they are governed by a nonlinear fourth-order partial differential equation which is a suitable gradient of the Ohta-Kawasaki energy. While the equilibrium states associated with this equation are of central importance for the description of the dynamics of block copolymers, their mathematical study remains challenging. In the current paper, we develop computer-assisted proof methods which can be used to study equilibrium solutions in block copolyme…
In this paper we prove the global existence of a strong solution to the initial boundary value problem for the exponential partial differential equation $\partial_tu-Δe^{-Δu}+e^{-Δu}-1=0$. The equation was proposed as a continuum model for epitaxial growth of crystal surfaces on vicinal surfaces with evaporation and deposition effects \cite{GLLM}. Our investigations reveal that we must control the size of both $\left\| e^{-Δu(x,0)}\right\|_{W^{2,2}(Ω)}$ and $\left\| e^{Δu(x,0)}\right\|_{\infty,Ω}$ suitably to achieve our results. Related results in \cite{GM,LS} were established via the Weiner …
Unique continuation and classification of blow-up profiles for elliptic systems with Neumann boundary coupling and applications to higher order fractional equations
In the whole space $R^d$, $d\ge 2$, we study homogenization of a divergence form elliptic fourth-order operator $A_\varepsilon$ with measurable $\varepsilon$-periodic coefficients, where $\varepsilon$ is a small parameter. For the resolvent $(A_\varepsilon+1)^{-1}$, acting as an operator from $L^2$ to $H^2$, we find an approximation with remainder term of order $O(\varepsilon^2)$ as $\varepsilon$ tends to $0$. Relying on this result, we construct the resolvent approximation with remainder of order $O(\varepsilon^3)$ in the operator $L^2$-norm. We employ two-scale expansions that involve smooth…
