We give a brief survey on some new developments on elliptic operators on manifolds with polyhedral singularities. The material essentially corresponds to a talk given by the author during the Conference "Elliptic and Hyperbolic Equations on Singular Spaces", October 27 - 31, 2008, at the MSRI, University of Berkeley.
We consider the elliptic estimates for Dirichlet-Neumann operator related to the water-wave problem on a two-dimensional corner domain in this paper. Due to the singularity of the boundary, there will be singular parts in the solution of the elliptic problem for D-N operator. To begin with, we study elliptic problems with mixed boundary condition to derive singularity decompositions and estimates. Based on the analysis, we present the estimates for both D-N operator and its shape derivative with the existence of singular parts.
We consider the scattering problem governed by the Helmholtz equation with inhomogeneity in both `conductivity' in the divergence form and `potential' in the lower order term. The support of the inhomogeneity is assumed to contain a convex corner. We prove that, due to the presence of such corner under appropriate assumptions on the potential and conductivity in the vicinity of the corner, any incident field scatters. Based on corner scattering analysis we present a uniqueness result on determination of the polygonal convex hull of the support of admissible inhomogeneities, from scattering dat…
Based on the $H^2$ existence of the solution, we investigate weighted estimates for a mixed boundary elliptic system in a two-dimensional corner domain, when the contact angle $\om\in(0,π/2)$. This system is closely related to the Dirichlet-Neumann operator in the water-waves problem, and the weight we choose is decided by singularities of the mixed boundary system. Meanwhile, we also prove similar weighted estimates with a different weight for the Dirichlet boundary problem as well as the Neumann boundary problem when $\om\in(0,π)$.
We study spectral properties of the Neumann-Poincaré operator on planar domains with corners with particular emphasis on existence of continuous spectrum and pure point spectrum. We show that the rate of resonance at continuous spectrum is different from that at eigenvalues, and then derive a method to distinguish continuous spectrum from eigenvalues. We perform computational experiments using the method to see whether continuous spectrum and pure point spectrum appear on domains with corners. For the computations we use a modification of the Nyström method which makes it possible to construct…
We establish a quantisation of corner-degenerate symbols, here called Mellin-edge quantisation, on a manifold $M$ with second order singularities. The typical ingredients come from the "most singular" stratum of $M$ which is a second order edge where the infinite transversal cone has a base $B$ that is itself a manifold with smooth edge. The resulting operator-valued amplitude functions on the second order edge are formulated purely in terms of Mellin symbols taking values in the edge algebra over $B.$ In this respect our result is formally analogous to a quantisation rule of a joint paper wit…
In this first part of the paper, we define a natural dual object for manifolds with corners and show how pseudodifferential calculus on such manifolds can be constructed in terms of the localization principle in C*-algebras. In the second part, these results will be applied to the solution of Gelfand's problem on the homotopy classification of elliptic operators for the case of manifolds with corners.
The Neumann-Poincaré (NP) operator naturally appears in the context of metamaterials as it may be used to represent the solutions of elliptic transmission problems via potentiel theory. In particular, its spectral properties are closely related to the well-posedness of these PDE's, in the typical case where one considers a bounded inclusion of homogeneous plasmonic metamaterial embedded in a homogeneous background dielectric medium. In a recent work, M. Perfekt and M. Putinar have shown that the NP operator of a 2D curvilinear polygon has an essential spectrum, which depends only on the angles…
We investigate the problem of calculating the Fredholm index of a geometric Dirac operator subject to local (e.g. Dirichlet and Neumann) and non-local (APS) boundary conditions posed on the strata of a manifold with corners. The boundary strata of the manifold with corners can intersect in higher codimension. To calculate the index we introduce a glueing construction and a corresponding Lie groupoid. We describe the Dirac operator subject to mixed boundary conditions via an equivariant family of Dirac operators on the fibers of the Lie groupoid. Using a heat kernel method with rescaling we der…
We study the eigenvalues of the Laplacian with a strong attractive Robin boundary condition in curvilinear polygons. It was known from previous works that the asymptotics of several first eigenvalues is essentially determined by the corner openings, while only rough estimates were available for the next eigenvalues. Under some geometric assumptions, we go beyond the critical eigenvalue number and give a precise asymptotics of any individual eigenvalue by establishing a link with an effective Schrödinger-type operator on the boundary of the domain with boundary conditions at the corners.
We investigate the self-adjointness of the two-dimensional Dirac operator $D$, with quantum-dot and Lorentz-scalar $δ$-shell boundary conditions, on piecewise $C^2$ domains with finitely many corners. For both models, we prove the existence of a unique self-adjoint realization whose domain is included in the Sobolev space $H^{1/2}$, the formal form domain of the free Dirac operator. The main part of our paper consists of a description of the domain of $D^*$ in terms of the domain of $D$ and the set of harmonic functions that verify some mixed boundary conditions. Then, we give a detailed study…
One way to geometrically encode the singularities of a stratified pseudomanifold is to endow its interior with an iterated fibred cusp metric. For such a metric, we develop and study a pseudodifferential calculus generalizing the Φ-calculus of Mazzeo and Melrose. Our starting point is the observation, going back to Melrose, that a stratified pseudomanifold can be `resolved' into a manifold with fibred corners. This allows us to define pseudodifferential operators as conormal distributions on a suitably blown-up double space. Various symbol maps are introduced, leading to the notion of full ell…
We study the analyticity of the semigroups generated by some classes of degenerate second order differential operators in the space of continuous function on a domain with corners. These semigroups arise from the theory of dynamics of populations.
We establish the stable homotopy classification of elliptic pseudodifferential operators on manifolds with corners and show that the set of elliptic operators modulo stable homotopy is isomorphic to the K-homology group of some stratified manifold. By way of application, generalizations of some recent results due to Monthubert and Nistor are given.
For every connected manifold with corners we use a homology theory called conormal homology, defined in terms of faces and incidences and whose cycles correspond geometrically to corner's cycles. Its Euler characteristic (over the rationals, dimension of the total even space minus the dimension of the total odd space), $χ_{cn}:=χ_0-χ_1$, is given by the alternated sum of the number of (open) faces of a given codimension. The main result of the present paper is that for a compact connected manifold with corners $X$ given as a finite product of manifolds with corners of codimension less or equal…
In this article, we revisit iterative methods for solving the inverse problem of photoacoustic tomography in free space. Recently, there have been interesting developments on explicit formulations of the adjoint operator, demonstrating that iterative methods are an attractive choice for photoacoustic image reconstruction. In this work, we propose several modifications of current formulations of the adjoint operator which help speed up the convergence and yield improved error estimates. We establish a stability analysis and show that, with our choices of the adjoint operator, the iterative meth…
We study parameter-dependent operators on a manifold with edge and construct new classes of elliptic elements in the corner calculus on an infinite cone with a singular base
We establish elements of a new approch to ellipticity and parametrices within operator algebras on a manifold with higher singularities, only based on some general axiomatic requirements on parameter-dependent operators in suitable scales of spaces. The idea is to model an iterative process with new generations of parameter-dependent operator theories, together with new scales of spaces that satisfy analogous requirements as the original ones, now on a corresponding higher level. The "full" calculus is voluminous; so we content ourselves here with some typical aspects such as symbols in terms …
For free boundary problems on Euclidean spaces, the monotonicity formulas of Alt-Caffarelli-Friedman and Caffarelli-Jerison-Kenig are cornerstones for the regularity theory as well as the existence theory. In this article we establish the analogs of these results for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on Riemannian manifolds. As an application we show that our monotonicity theorems can be employed to prove the Lipschitz continuity for the solutions of a general class of two-phase free boundary problems on Riemannian manifolds.
We introduce and study a general pseudodifferential calculus for boundary value problems on a class of non-compact manifolds with boundary (so-called Lie manifolds with boundary). This is accomplished by constructing a suitable generalization of the Boutet de Monvel calculus for boundary value problems. The data consists of a compact manifold with corners $M$ that is endowed with a Lie structure of vector fields $\mathcal{V}$, a so-called Lie manifold. The manifold $M$ is split into two equal parts $X_{+}$ and $X_{-}$ which intersect in an embedded hypersurface $Y \subset X_{\pm}$. Our goal is…

In this chapter we are examining several iterative methods for solving nonlinear eigenvalue problems. These arise in variational image-processing, graph partition and classification, nonlinear physics and more. The canonical eigenproblem we solve is $T(u)=λu$, where $T:\R^n\to \R^n$ is some bounded nonlinear operator. Other variations of eigenvalue problems are also discussed. We present a progression of 5 algorithms, coauthored in recent years by the author and colleagues. Each algorithm attempts to solve a unique problem or to improve the theoretical foundations. The algorithms can be unders…
The cobordism invariance of the index on closed manifolds is reproved using the calculus of cusp pseudodifferential operators on a manifold with boundary. More generally, on a compact manifold with corners, the existence of a symmetric cusp differential operator of order 1 and of Dirac type near the boundary implies that the sum of the indices of the induced operators on the hyperfaces is null.
