This paper has been withdrawn due to a critical error near equation (71). This error causes the entire argument of the paper to collapse.
Emmanuel Candes of Stanford discovered the error, and has suggested a correct analysis, which will be reported in a separate publication.
This paper studies the problem of recovering a structured signal from a relatively small number of corrupted non-linear measurements. Assuming that signal and corruption are contained in some structure-promoted set, we suggest an extended Lasso to disentangle signal and corruption. We also provide conditions under which this recovery procedure can successfully reconstruct both signal and corruption.
We study the problem of recovering an $s$-sparse signal $\mathbf{x}^{\star}\in\mathbb{C}^n$ from corrupted measurements $\mathbf{y} = \mathbf{A}\mathbf{x}^{\star}+\mathbf{z}^{\star}+\mathbf{w}$, where $\mathbf{z}^{\star}\in\mathbb{C}^m$ is a $k$-sparse corruption vector whose nonzero entries may be arbitrarily large and $\mathbf{w}\in\mathbb{C}^m$ is a dense noise with bounded energy. The aim is to exactly and stably recover the sparse signal with tractable optimization programs. In this paper, we prove the uniform recovery guarantee of this problem for two classes of structured sensing matric…
This paper is concerned with the problem of recovering a structured signal from a relatively small number of corrupted random measurements. Sharp phase transitions have been numerically observed in practice when different convex programming procedures are used to solve this problem. This paper is devoted to presenting theoretical explanations for these phenomenons by employing some basic tools from Gaussian process theory. Specifically, we identify the precise locations of the phase transitions for both constrained and penalized recovery procedures. Our theoretical results show that these phas…
High frame-corruption is widely observed in Long Range Wide Area Networks (LoRaWAN) due to the coexistence with other networks in ISM bands and an Aloha-like MAC layer. LoRa's Forward Error Correction (FEC) mechanism is often insufficient to retrieve corrupted data. In fact, real-life measurements show that at least one-fourth of received transmissions are corrupted. When more frames are dropped, LoRa nodes usually switch over to higher spreading factors (SF), thus increasing transmission times and increasing the required energy. This paper introduces ReDCoS, a novel coding technique at the ap…

In this paper we study the problem of recovering a low-rank matrix from a number of random linear measurements that are corrupted by outliers taking arbitrary values. We consider a nonsmooth nonconvex formulation of the problem, in which we explicitly enforce the low-rank property of the solution by using a factored representation of the matrix variable and employ an $\ell_1$-loss function to robustify the solution against outliers. We show that even when a constant fraction (which can be up to almost half) of the measurements are arbitrarily corrupted, as long as certain measurement operators…
We consider the decoding of linear and array codes from errors when we are only allowed to download a part of the codeword. More specifically, suppose that we have encoded $k$ data symbols using an $(n,k)$ code with code length $n$ and dimension $k.$ During storage, some of the codeword coordinates might be corrupted by errors. We aim to recover the original data by reading the corrupted codeword with a limit on the transmitting bandwidth, namely, we can only download an $α$ proportion of the corrupted codeword. For a given $α,$ our objective is to design a code and a decoding scheme such that…
We demonstrate that error correcting codes (ECCs) can be used to construct a labeled data set for finetuning of "trainable" communication systems without sacrificing resources for the transmission of known symbols. This enables adaptive systems, which can be trained on-the-fly to compensate for slow fluctuations in channel conditions or varying hardware impairments. We examine the influence of corrupted training data and show that it is crucial to train based on correct labels. The proposed method can be applied to fully end-to-end trained communication systems (autoencoders) as well as system…
Previous work regarding low-rank matrix recovery has concentrated on the scenarios in which the matrix is noise-free and the measurements are corrupted by noise. However, in practical application, the matrix itself is usually perturbed by random noise preceding to measurement. This paper concisely investigates this scenario and evidences that, for most measurement schemes utilized in compressed sensing, the two models are equivalent with the central distinctness that the noise associated with (\ref{eq.3}) is larger by a factor to $mn/M$, where $m,~n$ are the dimension of the matrix and $M$ is …
We consider learning Ising tree models when the observations from the nodes are corrupted by independent but non-identically distributed noise with unknown statistics. Katiyar et al. (2020) showed that although the exact tree structure cannot be recovered, one can recover a partial tree structure; that is, a structure belonging to the equivalence class containing the true tree. This paper presents a systematic improvement of Katiyar et al. (2020). First, we present a novel impossibility result by deriving a bound on the necessary number of samples for partial recovery. Second, we derive a sign…

Consider a spectrally sparse signal $\boldsymbol{x}$ that consists of $r$ complex sinusoids with or without damping. We study the robust recovery problem for the spectrally sparse signal under the fully observed setting, which is about recovering $\boldsymbol{x}$ and a sparse corruption vector $\boldsymbol{s}$ from their sum $\boldsymbol{z}=\boldsymbol{x}+\boldsymbol{s}$. In this paper, we exploit the low-rank property of the Hankel matrix formed by $\boldsymbol{x}$, and formulate the problem as the robust recovery of a corrupted low-rank Hankel matrix. We develop a highly efficient non-convex…

In this paper, we study the problem of recovering two unknown signals from their convolution, which is commonly referred to as blind deconvolution. Reformulation of blind deconvolution as a low-rank recovery problem has led to multiple theoretical recovery guarantees in the past decade due to the success of the nuclear norm minimization heuristic. In particular, in the absence of noise, exact recovery has been established for sufficiently incoherent signals contained in lower-dimensional subspaces. However, if the convolution is corrupted by additive bounded noise, the stability of the recover…
