In this paper we present an experimentally realizable microwave pulse sequence that effects a Controlled NOT (C-NOT) gate operation on a Josephson junction-based flux-qubit/resonator system with high fidelity in the end state. We obtained a C-NOT gate process fidelity of 0.988 (0.980) for a two (three) qubit/resonator system under ideal conditions, and a fidelity of 0.903 for a two qubit/resonator system under the best, currently achieved, experimental conditions. In both cases, we found that "qubit leakage" to higher levels of the resonator causes a majority of the loss of fidelity, and that such leakage becomes more pronounced as decoherence effects increase.
We report the capacitive spring softening effect observed in single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) nanoelectromechanical (NEM) resonators. The nanotube resonators adopt dual-gate configuration with both bottom-gate and side-gate capable of tuning the resonance frequency through capacitive coupling. Interestingly, downward resonance frequency shifting is observed with increasing side-gate voltage, which can be attributed to the capacitive softening of spring constant. Furthermore, in-plane vibrational modes exhibit much stronger spring softening effect than out-of-plan modes. Our dual-gate desig…
The resonator-induced phase gate is a two-qubit operation in which driving a bus resonator induces a state-dependent phase shift on the qubits equivalent to an effective $ZZ$ interaction. In principle, the dispersive nature of the gate offers flexibility for qubit parameters. However, the drive can cause resonator and qubit leakage, the physics of which cannot be fully captured using either the existing Jaynes-Cummings or Kerr models. In this paper, we adopt an ab-initio model based on Josephson nonlinearity for transmon qubits. The ab-initio analysis agrees well with the Kerr model in terms o…
We propose and analyze a high-fidelity hot gate for generic spin-resonator systems which allows for coherent spin-spin coupling, in the presence of a thermally populated resonator mode. Our scheme is non-perturbative, applies to a broad class of physical systems, including for example spins coupled to circuit-QED and surface acoustic wave resonators as well as nanomechanical oscillators, and can be implemented readily with state-of-the-art experimental setups. We provide and numerically verify simple expressions for the fidelity of creating maximally entangled states under realistic conditions…
We propose an experimentally realizable hybrid quantum circuit for achieving a strong coupling between a spin ensemble and a transmission-line resonator via a superconducting flux qubit used as a data bus. The resulting coupling can be used to transfer quantum information between the spin ensemble and the resonator. In particular, in contrast to the direct coupling without a data bus, our approach requires far less spins to achieve a strong coupling between the spin ensemble and the resonator (e.g., three to four orders of magnitude less). This proposed hybrid quantum circuit could enable a lo…
Fast, high-fidelity single and two-qubit gates are essential to building a viable quantum information processor, but achieving both in the same system has proved challenging for spin qubits. We propose and analyze an approach to perform a long-distance two-qubit controlled phase (CPHASE) gate between two singlet-triplet qubits using an electromagnetic resonator to mediate their interaction. The qubits couple longitudinally to the resonator, and by driving the qubits near the resonator's frequency they can be made to acquire a state-dependent geometric phase that leads to a CPHASE gate independ…
The detection of mechanical vibrations near the quantum limit is a formidable challenge since the displacement becomes vanishingly small when the number of phonon quanta tends towards zero. An interesting setup for on-chip nanomechanical resonators is that of coupling them to electrical microwave cavities for detection and manipulation. Here we show how to achieve a large cavity coupling energy of up to (2 π) 1 MHz/nm for metallic beam resonators at tens of MHz. We used focused ion beam (FIB) cutting to produce uniform slits down to 10 nm, separating patterned resonators from their gate electr…
Silicon nitride (SiN) mechanical resonators with high quality mechanical properties are attractive for fundamental research and applications. However, it is challenging to maintain these mechanical properties while achieving strong coupling to an electrical circuit for efficient on-chip integration. Here, we present a SiN drum resonator covered with an aluminum thin film, enabling large capacitive coupling to a suspended top-gate. Implementing the full electrical measurement scheme, we demonstrate a high quality factor ~ 1E4 (comparable to that of bare drums at room temperature) and present ou…
We show a purely electronic cooling scheme to cool a charged mechanical resonator (MR) down to nearly the vibrational ground state by elaborately tuning bias gate voltages on the electrodes, which couple the MR by Coulomb interaction. The key step is the modification of time-dependent effective eigen-frequency of the MR based on the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant. With respect to a relevant idea proposed previously [Li et al., Phys. Rev. A 83, 043803 (2011)], our scheme is simpler, more practical and completely within the reach of current technology.
A key challenge for semiconductor quantum-dot charge qubits is the realization of long-range qubit coupling and performing high-fidelity gates based on it. Here, we describe a new type of charge qubit formed by an electron confined in a triple-quantum-dot system, enabling single and two-qubit gates working in the dipolar and quadrupolar detuning sweet spots. We further present the form for the long-range dipolar coupling between the charge qubit and the superconducting resonator. Based on the hybrid system composed of the qubits and the resonator, we present two types of entangling gates: the …
We propose a hybrid system composed of a Majorana qubit and a nanomechanical resonator, implemented by a spin-orbit-coupled superconducting nanowire, using a set of static and oscillating ferromagnetic gates. The ferromagnetic gates induce Majorana bound states in the nanowire, which hybridize and constitute a Majorana qubit. Due to the oscillation of one of these gates, the Majorana qubit can be coherently rotated. By tuning the gate voltage to modulate the local spin-orbit coupling, it is possible to reach the resonance of the qubit-oscillator system for relatively strong couplings.
Circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED) employs superconducting microwave resonators as quantum buses. In circuit QED with semiconductor quantum-dot-based qubits, increasing the resonator impedance is desirable as it enhances the coupling to the typically small charge dipole moment of these qubits. However, the gate electrodes necessary to form quantum dots in the vicinity of a resonator inadvertently lead to a parasitic port through which microwave photons can leak, thereby reducing the quality factor of the resonator. This is particularly the case for high-impedance resonators, as the ratio of…
We propose a mechanism for coupling spin qubits formed in double quantum dots to a superconducting transmission line resonator. Coupling the resonator to the gate controlling the interdot tunneling creates a strong spin qubit--resonator interaction with strength of tens of MHz. This mechanism allows operating the system at a point of degeneracy where dephasing is minimized. The transmission line can serve as a shuttle allowing for two-qubit operations, including fast generation of qubit-qubit entanglement and the implementation of a controlled-phase gate.
The strong coupling limit of cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) implies the capability of a matter-like quantum system to coherently transform an individual excitation into a single photon within a resonant structure. This not only enables essential processes required for quantum information processing but also allows for fundamental studies of matter-light interaction. In this work we demonstrate strong coupling between the charge degree of freedom in a gate-detuned GaAs double quantum dot (DQD) and a frequency-tunable high impedance resonator realized using an array of superconducting quan…
Single-step implementations of multi-qubit gates are generally believed to provide a simpler design, a faster operation, and a lower decoherence. For coupled three qubits interacting with a photon field, a realizable scheme for a single-step Toffoli gate is investigated. We find that the three qubit system can be described by four effective modified Jaynes-Cummings models in the states of two control qubits. Within the rotating wave approximation, the modified Jaynes-Cummings models are shown to be reduced to the conventional Jaynes-Cummings models with renormalized couplings between qubits an…
We propose a quantum non-demolition Majorana qubit readout protocol based on parametricmodulation of a longitudinal interaction between a pair of Majorana bound states and a resonator. The interaction can be modulated through microwave frequency gate-voltage or flux control of a tunable tunnel barrier. The qubit-resonator coupling is quantum non-demolition to exponential accuracy, a property inherited from the topological nature of the Majorana zero modes. The same mechanism as used for single-qubit readout can also be extended to perform multi-qubit measurements and be used to enact long rang…
Voltage-tunable superconductor-semiconductor devices offer a unique platform to realize dynamic tunability in superconducting quantum circuits. By galvanically connecting a gated InAs-Al Josephson junction to a coplanar waveguide resonator, we demonstrate the use of a wide-range gate-tunable superconducting element. We show that the resonant frequency is controlled via a gate-tunable Josephson inductance and that the non-linearity of the voltage-controlled InAs-Al junction is non-dissipative as is the case with conventional Al-AlO$_{x}$ junctions. As the gate voltage is decreased, the inductiv…
We use Scanning Gate Microscopy to study electron transport through an open, gate-defined resonator in a Ga(Al)As heterostructure. Raster-scanning the voltage-biased metallic tip above the resonator, we observe distinct conductance modulations as a function of the tip-position and voltage. Quantum mechanical simulations reproduce these conductance modulations and reveal their relation to the partial local density of states in the resonator. Our measurements illustrate the current frontier between possibilities and limitations in imaging the local density of states in buried electron systems us…
We propose a theoretical scheme for realizing °exible two-qubit controlled phase gate. A transmission line resonator is used to induce the coupling between nitrogen-vacancy (N-V) in diamond and superconducting qubit. The N-V center acts as control qubit and the superconducting qubit as target qubit. Through adjusting external flux, we obtain desired coupling between random superconducting qubit and transmission line resonator. Moreover, our protocol might be implemented via the current experimental technology.
Magnetic-field-resilient superconducting coplanar waveguide (SCPW) resonators are essential for developing integrated quantum circuits of various qubits and quantum memory devices. Molybdenum-Rhenium (MoRe), which is a disordered superconducting alloy forming a highly transparent contact to the graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), would be a promising platform for realizing the field-resilient SCPW resonators combined with graphene- and CNT-based nano-hybrid qubits. We fabricated MoRe SCPW resonators and investigated their microwave transmission characteristics with varying temperature and ex…
We propose entangling operations based on the energy curvature couplings of encoded spin qubits to a superconducting cavity, exploring the non-linear qubit response to a gate voltage variation. For a two-qubit ($n$-qubit) entangling gate we explore acquired geometric phases via a time-modulated longitudinal $σ_z$-coupling, offering gate times of 10s of ns even when the qubits and the cavity are far detuned. No dipole moment is necessary: the qubit transverse $σ_x$-coupling to the resonator is zero at the full sweet spot of the encoded spin qubit of interest (a triple quantum dot three-electron…
We propose a technique for sensitive magnetic point force detection using a suspended carbon nanotube (CNT) mechanical resonator combined with a magnetic field gradient generated by a ferromagnetic gate electrode. Numerical calculations of the mechanical resonance frequency show that single Bohr magneton changes in the magnetic state of an individual magnetic molecule grafted to the CNT can translate to detectable frequency shifts, on the order of a few kHz. The dependences of the resonator response to device parameters such as length, tension, CNT diameter, and gate voltage are explored and o…
Developing fast and accurate control and readout techniques is an important challenge in quantum information processing with semiconductor qubits. Here, we study the dynamics and the coherence properties of a GaAs/AlGaAs double quantum dot (DQD) charge qubit strongly coupled to a high-impedance SQUID array resonator. We drive qubit transitions with synthesized microwave pulses and perform qubit readout through the state dependent frequency shift imparted by the qubit on the dispersively coupled resonator. We perform Rabi oscillation, Ramsey fringe, energy relaxation and Hahn-echo measurements …
Wireless communication through dynamic spectrum allocation over microwave bands, essential to accommodate exponentially growing data traffic, requires massive array of radio-frequency (RF) filters for adaptive signal shaping at arbitrary frequencies. However, conventional RF filters based on planar acoustic resonators are incapable to realize such massive integrated arrays, due to their large footprint and limited on-chip frequency scalability. Here, we present a signal processor enabled by integration of three-dimensional ferroelectric-gate fin (FGF) nano-acoustic resonators with extreme freq…
We present a scalable hybrid architecture for the 2D surface code combining superconducting resonators and hole-spin qubits in nanowires with tunable direct Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The back-bone of this architecture is a square lattice of capacitively coupled coplanar waveguide resonators each of which hosts a nanowire hole-spin qubit. Both the frequency of the qubits and their coupling to the microwave field are tunable by a static electric field applied via the resonator center pin. In the dispersive regime, an entangling two-qubit gate can be realized via a third order process, whereby …
The outlook for producing useful practical devices within the paradigm of magnonics rests on our ability to emit, control and detect coherent exchange spin waves on the nanoscale. Here, we argue that all these key functionalities can be delivered by chiral magnonic resonators - soft magnetic elements chirally coupled, via magneto-dipole interaction, to magnonic media nearby. Starting from the basic principles of chiral coupling, we outline how they could be used to construct devices and explore underpinning physics, ranging from basic logic gates to field programmable gate arrays, in-memory co…
We propose and analyze the detector of modulated terahertz (THz) radiation based on the graphene field-effect transistor with mechanically floating gate made of graphene as well. The THz component of incoming radiation induces resonant excitation of plasma oscillations in graphene layers (GLs). The rectified component of the ponderomotive force between GLs invokes resonant mechanical swinging of top GL, resulting in the drain current oscillations. To estimate the device responsivity, we solve the hydrodynamic equations for the electrons and holes in graphene governing the plasma-wave response,…
Long-distance two-qubit coupling, mediated by a superconducting resonator, is a leading paradigm for performing entangling operations in a quantum computer based on spins in semiconducting materials. Here, we demonstrate a novel, controllable spin-photon coupling based on a longitudinal interaction between a spin qubit and a resonator. We show that coupling a singlet-triplet qubit to a high-impedance superconducting resonator can produce the desired longitudinal coupling when the qubit is driven near the resonator's frequency. We measure the energy splitting of the qubit as a function of the d…
Spins in semiconductor quantum dots are a candidate for cryogenic quantum processors due to their exceptionally long coherence times. One major challenge to scaling quantum dot spin qubits is the dense wiring requirements, making it difficult to envision fabricating large arrays of nearest-neighbor-coupled qubits necessary for error correction. We describe a method to solve this problem by spacing the qubits out using high-impedance superconducting resonators with a 2D grid unit cell area of $0.16~\text{mm}^2$ using 3D integration. To prove the viability of this approach, we demonstrate 3D int…
Dispersive sensing is a powerful technique that enables scalable and high-fidelity readout of solid-state quantum bits. In particular, gate-based dispersive sensing has been proposed as the readout mechanism for future topological qubits, which can be measured by single electrons tunneling through zero-energy modes. The development of such a readout requires resolving the coherent charge tunneling amplitude from a quantum dot in a Majorana-zero-mode host system faithfully on short time scales. Here, we demonstrate rapid single-shot detection of a coherent single-electron tunneling amplitude be…
We investigate theoretically the dynamical behavior of a qubit obtained with the two ground eigenstates of an ultrastrong coupling circuit-QED system consisting of a finite number of Josephson fluxonium atoms inductively coupled to a transmission line resonator. We show an universal set of quantum gates by using multiple transmission line resonators (each resonator represents a single qubit). We discuss the intrinsic 'anisotropic' nature of noise sources for fluxonium artificial atoms. Through a master equation treatment with colored noise and manylevel dynamics, we prove that, for a general c…
Superconducting circuits present a promising platform with which to realize a quantum refrigerator. Motivated by this, we fabricate and perform spectroscopy of a gated Cooper-pair box, capacitively coupled to two superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators with different frequencies. We experimentally demonstrate the strong coupling of a charge qubit to two superconducting resonators, with the ability to perform voltage driving of the qubit at GHz frequencies. We go on to discuss how the measured device could be modified to operate as a cyclic quantum refrigerator by terminating the resonato…
We have designed and fabricated a half-wavelength reflection line resonator (RLR) that consists of a pair of two coupled microstrip lines on a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. By changing the top gate voltage on a square of two dimensional electron gas under the resonator, a large range of the quality factors can be obtained. Energy loss in the two-dimensional electron gas can be minimized, thus realizing a versatile resonator suitable for integration with semiconductor quantum circuits.
Recent achievements in the field of gate defined semiconductor quantum dots reinforce the concept of a spin-based quantum computer consisting of nodes of locally connected qubits which communicate with each other via superconducting circuit resonator photons. In this work we theoretically demonstrate a versatile set of quantum gates between adjacent spin qubits defined in semiconductor quantum dots situated within the same node of such a spin-based quantum computer. The electric dipole acquired by the spin of an electron that moves across a double quantum dot potential in a magnetic field grad…
We probe electro-mechanical properties of InAs nanowire (diameter ~ 100 nm) resonators where the suspended nanowire (NW) is also the active channel of a field effect transistor (FET). We observe and explain the non-monotonic dispersion of the resonant frequency with DC gate voltage (VgDC). The effect of electronic screening on the properties of the resonator can be seen in the amplitude. We observe the mixing of mechanical modes with VgDC. We also experimentally probe and quantitatively explain the hysteretic non-linear properties, as a function of VgDC, of the resonator using the Duffing equa…
We demonstrate the use of radio-frequency (rf) resonators to measure the capacitance of nano-scale semiconducting devices in field-effect transistor configurations. The rf resonator is attached to the gate or the lead of the device. Consequently, tuning the carrier density in the conducting channel of the device affects the resonance frequency, quantitatively reflecting its capacitance. We test the measurement method on InSb and InAs nanowires at dilution-refrigerator temperatures. The measured capacitances are consistent with those inferred from the periodicity of the Coulomb blockade of quan…
Exploring highly connected networks of qubits is invaluable for implementing various quantum algorithms and simulations as it allows for entangling qubits with reduced circuit depth. Here, we demonstrate a multi-qubit STAR (Sideband Tone Assisted Rabi driven) gate. Our scheme is inspired by the ion qubit Mølmer-Sørensen gate and is mediated by a shared photonic mode and Rabi-driven superconducting qubits, which relaxes restrictions on qubit frequencies during fabrication and supports scalability. We achieve a two-qubit gate with maximum state fidelity of 0.95 in 310 ns, a three-qubit gate with…
Coupling an electromechanical resonator with carbon-nanotube quantum dots is a significant method to control both the electronic charge and the spin quantum states. By exploiting a novel micro-transfer technique, we fabricate two strongly-coupled and electrically-tunable mechanical resonators on a single carbon nanotube for the first time. The frequency of the two resonators can be individually tuned by the bottom gates, and strong coupling is observed between the electron charge and phonon modes of each resonator. Furthermore, the conductance of either resonator can be nonlocally modulated by…
Nonlinear modal interactions and associated internal resonance phenomena have recently been used to demonstrate improved oscillator performance and enhanced sensing capabilities. Here, we show tunable modal interaction in a MoS2 resonator. We achieve the tunability of coupling between these initially uncoupled modes by using electrostatic gate voltages. This tunable coupling enables us to make the modes commensurate and observe energy exchange between the modes. We attribute the strong energy exchange between the vibrational modes to 2:1 internal resonance. This interaction strongly affects th…
We report fast charge state readout of a double quantum dot in a CMOS split-gate silicon nanowire transistor via the large dispersive interaction with microwave photons in a lumped-element resonator formed by hybrid integration with a superconducting inductor. We achieve a coupling rate $g_0/(2π) = 204 \pm 2$ MHz by exploiting the large interdot gate lever arm of an asymmetric split-gate device, $α=0.72$, and by inductively coupling to the resonator to increase its impedance, $Z_\text{r}=560~Ω$. In the dispersive regime, the large coupling strength at the double quantum dot hybridisation point…
We propose a spin-orbit qubit in a nanowire quantum dot on the surface of a multiferroic insulator with a cycloidal spiral magnetic order. The spiral exchange field from the multiferroic insulator causes an inhomogeneous Zeeman-like interaction on the electron spin in the quantum dot, producing a spin-orbit qubit. The absence of an external magnetic field benefits the integration of such spin-orbit qubit into high-quality superconducting resonators. By exploiting the Rashba spin-orbit coupling in the quantum dot via a gate voltage, one can obtain an effective spin-photon coupling with an effic…
