We consider quivers/skew-symmetric matrices under the action of mutation (in the cluster algebra sense). We classify those which are isomorphic to their own mutation via a cycle permuting all the vertices, and give families of quivers which have higher periodicity. The periodicity means that sequences given by recurrence relations arise in a natural way from the associated cluster algebras. We present a number of interesting new families of non-linear recurrences, necessarily with the Laurent property, of both the real line and the plane, containing integrable maps as special cases. In particular, we show that some of these recurrences can be linearised and, with certain initial conditions, give integer sequences which contain all solutions of some particular Pell equations. We extend our construction to include recurrences with parameters, giving an explanation of some observations made by Gale. Finally, we point out a connection between quivers which arise in our classification and those arising in the context of quiver gauge theories.
We study Laurent expansions of cluster variables in a cluster algebra of rank 2 associated to a generalized Kronecker quiver. In the case of the ordinary Kronecker quiver, we obtain explicit expressions for Laurent expansions of the elements of the canonical basis for the corresponding cluster algebra.
Quiver mutation plays a crucial role in the definition of cluster algebras by Fomin and Zelevinsky. It induces an equivalence relation on the set of all quivers without loops and two-cycles. A quiver is called mutation-acyclic if it is mutation-equivalent to an acyclic quiver. This note gives a proof that full subquivers of mutation-acyclic quivers are mutation-acyclic.
In general, the existence of a maximal green sequence is not mutation invariant. In this paper we show that it is in fact mutation invariant for cluster quivers of finite mutation type. In particular, we show that a mutation finite cluster quiver has a maximal green sequence unless it arises from a once-punctured closed marked surface, or one of the two quivers in the mutation class of X7. We develop a procedure to explicitly find maximal green sequences for cluster quivers associated to arbitrary triangulations of closed marked surfaces with at least two punctures. As a corollary, it follows …
We define mutation on coloured quivers associated to tilting objects in higher cluster categories. We show that this operation is compatible with the mutation operation on the tilting objects. This gives a combinatorial approach to tilting in higher cluster categories and especially an algorithm to determine the Gabriel quivers of tilting objects in such categories.
We show that the number of quivers in the mutation class of a quiver of Dynkin type $D_n$ is given by $\sum_{d|n} ϕ(n/d)\binom{2d}{d}/(2n)$ for $n \geq 5$. To obtain this formula, we give a correspondence between the quivers in the mutation class and certain rooted trees.
A quiver mutation loop is a sequence of mutations and vertex relabelings, along which a quiver transforms back to the original form. For a given mutation loop, we introduce a quantity called a partition q-series. The partition q-series are invariant under pentagon moves. If the quivers are of Dynkin type or square products thereof, they reproduce so-called parafermionic or quasi-particle character formulas of certain modules associated with affine Lie algebras. They enjoy nice modular properties as expected from the conformal field theory point of view.
We classify the connected quivers with the property that all the quivers in their mutation class have the same number of arrows. These are the ones having at most two vertices, or the ones arising from triangulations of marked bordered oriented surfaces of two kinds: either surfaces with non-empty boundary having exactly one marked point on each boundary component and no punctures, or surfaces without boundary having exactly one puncture. This combinatorial property has also a representation-theoretic counterpart: to each such quiver there is a naturally associated potential such that the Jaco…
In this paper, we study structural properties of finite mutation type quivers. In particular, we obtain a characterization of finite mutation type quivers that are associated with triangulations of surfaces and give a new numerical invariant for their mutation classes.
Quivers constructed from hyperbolic Coxeter simplices give examples of minimal mutation-infinite quivers, however they are not the only such quivers. We classify minimal mutation-infinite quivers through a number of moves and link the representatives of the classes with the hyperbolic Coxeter simplices, plus exceptional classes which are not related to simplices.
We study properties of minimal mutation-infinite quivers. In particular we show that every minimal-mutation infinite quiver of at least rank 4 is Louise and has a maximal green sequence. It then follows that the cluster algebras generated by these quivers are locally acyclic and hence equal to their upper cluster algebra. We also study which quivers in a mutation-class have a maximal green sequence. For any rank 3 quiver there are at most 6 quivers in its mutation class that admit a maximal green sequence. We also show that for every rank 4 minimal mutation-infinite quiver there is a finite co…
A quiver is an oriented graph. Quiver mutation is an elementary operation on quivers. It appeared in physics in Seiberg duality in the nineties and in mathematics in the definition of cluster algebras by Fomin-Zelevinsky in 2002. We show, for large classes of quivers Q, using quiver mutation and quantum dilogarithms, one can construct the combinatorial DT-invariant, a formal power series intrinsically associated with Q. When defined, it coincides with the "total" Donaldson-Thomas invariant of Q (with a generic potential) provided by algebraic geometry (work of Joyce, Kontsevich-Soibelman, Szen…

In this article we prove explicit formulae for the number of non-isomorphic cluster-tilted algebras of type \tilde{A}_n in the derived equivalence classes. In particular, we obtain the number of elements in the mutation classes of quivers of type \tilde{A}_n. As a by-product, this provides an alternative proof for the number of quivers of Dynkin type D_n which was first determined by Buan and Torkildsen.
We characterize the marked bordered unpunctured oriented surfaces with the property that all the Jacobian algebras of the quivers with potentials arising from their triangulations are derived equivalent. These are either surfaces of genus g with b boundary components and one marked point on each component, or the disc with 4 or 5 points on its boundary. We show that for each such marked surface, all the quivers in the mutation class have the same number of arrows, and the corresponding Jacobian algebras constitute a complete derived equivalence class of finite-dimensional algebras whose member…
Skew-symmetric non-integer matrices with real entries can be viewed as quivers with non-integer weights of arrows. One can mutate such quivers according to usual rules of quiver mutation. Felikson and Tumarkin show that rank 3 mutation-finite non-integer quivers admit geometric realisations by partial reflections. This allows to define a notion of seeds (as Y-seeds), and hence, to define the exchange graphs for mutation classes. In this paper we study exchange graphs of mutation-finite quivers in rank 3. The concept of finite and affine type generalises naturally to non-integer quivers. In par…
In this paper, first we introduce a quantity called a partition function for a quiver mutation sequence. The partition function is a generating function whose weight is a $q$-binomial associated with each mutation. Then, we show that the partition function can be expressed as a ratio of products of quantum dilogarithms. This provides a systematic way of constructing various $q$-binomial multisum identities.
We classify all mutation-finite quivers with real weights. We show that every finite mutation class not originating from an integer skew-symmetrizable matrix has a geometric realization by reflections. We also explore the structure of acyclic representatives in finite mutation classes and their relations to acute-angled simplicial domains in the corresponding reflection groups.
Maximal green sequences are particular sequences of mutations of quivers which were introduced by Keller in the context of quantum dilogarithm identities and independently by Cecotti-Córdova-Vafa in the context of supersymmetric gauge theory. The existence of maximal green sequences for exceptional finite mutation type quivers has been shown by Alim-Cecotti-Córdova-Espahbodi-Rastogi-Vafa except for the quiver $X_7$. In this paper we show that the quiver $X_7$ does not have any maximal green sequences. We also generalize the idea of the proof to give sufficient conditions for the non-existence …
We give an explicit description of the mutation classes of quivers of type \tilde{A}_n. Furthermore, we provide a complete classification of cluster tilted algebras of type \tilde{A}_n up to derived equivalence. We show that the bounded derived category of such an algebra depends on four combinatorial parameters of the corresponding quiver.
This note provides a quiver which does not admit a maximal green sequence, but which is mutation-equivalent to a quiver which does admit a maximal green sequence. The proof uses the `scattering diagrams' of Gross-Hacking-Keel-Kontsevich to show that a maximal green sequence for a quiver determines a maximal green sequence for any induced subquiver.

Brane tilings are infinite, bipartite, periodic, planar graphs that are dual to quivers. In this paper, we examine the del Pezzo 2 (dP$_2$) quiver and its brane tiling, which arise from the physics literature, in terms of toric mutations on its corresponding cluster. Specifically, we give explicit formulas for all cluster variables generated by toric mutation sequences. Moreover, for each such variable, we associate a subgraph of the dP$_2$ brane tiling to it such that its weight matches the variable.
We construct finite volume hyperbolic manifolds with large symmetry groups. The construction makes use of the presentations of finite Coxeter groups provided by Barot and Marsh and involves mutations of quivers and diagrams defined in the theory of cluster algebras. We generalize our construction by assigning to every quiver or diagram of finite or affine type a CW-complex with a proper action of a finite (or affine) Coxeter group. These CW-complexes undergo mutations agreeing with mutations of quivers and diagrams. We also generalize the construction to quivers and diagrams originating from u…
In a recent paper by K.-H. Lee, K. Lee and M. Mills, a mutation of reflections in the universal Coxeter group is defined in association with a mutation of a quiver. A matrix representation of these reflections is determined by a linear ordering on the set of vertices of the quiver. It was conjectured that there exists an ordering (called a pseudo-acyclic ordering in this paper) such that whenever two mutation sequences of a quiver lead to the same labeled seed, the representations of the associated reflections also coincide. In this paper, we prove this conjecture for every quiver mutation-equ…
We present a geometric realization for all mutation classes of quivers of rank $3$ with real weights. This realization is via linear reflection groups for acyclic mutation classes and via groups generated by $π$-rotations for the cyclic ones. The geometric behavior of the model turns out to be controlled by the Markov constant $p^2+q^2+r^2-pqr$, where $p,q,r$ are the elements of exchange matrix. We also classify skew-symmetric mutation-finite real $3\times 3$ matrices and explore the structure of acyclic representatives in finite and infinite mutation classes.
We consider deformations of sequences of cluster mutations in finite type cluster algebras, which destroy the Laurent property but preserve the presymplectic structure defined by the exchange matrix. The simplest example is the Lyness 5-cycle, arising from the cluster algebra of type $A_2$: this deforms to the Lyness family of integrable symplectic maps in the plane. For types $A_3$ and $A_4$ we find suitable conditions such that the deformation produces a two-parameter family of Liouville integrable maps (in dimensions two and four, respectively). We also perform Laurentification for these ma…
Given a Laurent polynomial f, one can form the period of f: this is a function of one complex variable that plays an important role in mirror symmetry for Fano manifolds. Mutations are a particular class of birational transformations acting on Laurent polynomials in two variables; they preserve the period and are closely connected with cluster algebras. We propose a higher-dimensional analog of mutation acting on Laurent polynomials f in n variables. In particular we give a combinatorial description of mutation acting on the Newton polytope P of f, and use this to establish many basic facts ab…
We extend Carter's notion of admissible diagrams and attach a "Dynkin-like" diagram to each reduced reflection factorization of an element in a finite Weyl group. We give a complete classification for the diagrams attached to reduced reflection factorizations. Remarkably, such a diagram turns out to be cyclically orientable if and only if it is isomorphic to the underlying graph of a quiver which is mutation-equivalent to a Dynkin quiver. Furthermore we show that each diagram encodes a natural presentation of the Weyl group as reflection group. The latter one extends work of Cameron, Seidel an…
A maximal green sequence introduced by B. Keller is a certain sequence of quiver mutations at green vertices. T. Brüstle, G. Dupont and M. Pérotin showed that for an acyclic quiver, maximal green sequences are realized as maximal paths in the Hasse quiver of the poset of support tilting modules. They also considered possible lengths of maximal green sequences. In this paper, we calculate possible lengths of maximal green sequences for a quiver of type $A$ or of type $\tilde{A}_{n,1}$ by using theory of tilting mutation.
We study graded dimension formulas for finite quiver Hecke algebras $R^{Λ_0}(β)$ of type $A^{(2)}_{2\ell}$ and $D^{(2)}_{\ell+1}$ using combinatorics of Young walls. We introduce the notion of standard tableaux for proper Young walls and show that the standard tableaux form a graded poset with lattice structure. We next investigate Laurent polynomials associated with proper Young walls and their standard tableaux arising from the Fock space representations consisting of proper Young walls. Then we prove the graded dimension formulas described in terms of the Laurent polynomials. When evaluatin…
We introduce a new method for producing both maximal green and reddening sequences of quivers. The method, called component preserving mutations, generalizes the notion of direct sums of quivers and can be used as a tool to both recover known reddening sequences as well as find reddening sequences that were previously unknown. We use the method to produce and recover maximal green sequences for many bipartite recurrent quivers that show up in the study of periodicity of $T$-systems and $Y$-systems. Additionally, we show how our method relates to the dominance phenomenon recently considered by …
Given a framed quiver, i.e. one with a frozen vertex associated to each mutable vertex, there is a concept of green mutation, as introduced by Keller. Maximal sequences of such mutations, known as maximal green sequences, are important in representation theory and physics as they have numerous applications, including the computations of spectrums of BPS states, Donaldson-Thomas invariants, tilting of hearts in the derived category, and quantum dilogarithm identities. In this paper, we study such sequences and construct a maximal green sequence for every quiver mutation-equivalent to an orienta…
We associate a quiver to a quasi-triangulation of a non-orientable marked surface and define a notion of quiver mutation that is compatible with quasi-cluster algebra mutation defined by Dupont and Palesi. Moreover, we use our quiver to show the unistructurality of the quasi-cluster algebra arising from the Mobius strip.
We show that the mutation class of a finite quiver without oriented cycles is finite if and only is the quiver is either Dynkin, extended Dynkin or has at most two vertices.
In 2010, Everitt and Fountain introduced the concept of reflection monoids. The Boolean reflection monoids form a family of reflection monoids (symmetric inverse semigroups are Boolean reflection monoids of type $A$). In this paper, we give a family of presentations of Boolean reflection monoids and show how these presentations are compatible with quiver mutations of orientations of Dynkin diagrams with frozen vertices. Our results recover the presentations of Boolean reflection monoids given by Everitt and Fountain and the presentations of symmetric inverse semigroups given by Popova respecti…
We show that for any positive integer $n$, there exists a quiver $Q$ with $O(n^2)$ vertices and $O(n^2)$ edges such that any quiver on $n$ vertices is a full subquiver of a quiver mutation equivalent to $Q$. We generalize this statement to skew-symmetrizable matrices and obtain other related results. In particular, we show that any quiver is a full subquiver of a quiver mutation equivalent to a quiver of a plabic graph.
We show that Fano lattice polygons define a class of balanced quivers with interesting properties. The combinatorics of these quivers is related to singularities of the underlying toric Fano surface. This allows us to show that every Fano polygon defines a point on a certain family of algebraic hypersurfaces. Our quivers admit a generalized mutation which preserves balancing and coincides with combinatorial mutation of Fano polygons whenever both operations are defined. We characterize balanced quivers arising from Fano polygons and discuss generalizations to higher dimensions.
Bipartite, periodic, planar graphs known as brane tilings can be associated to a large class of quivers. This paper will explore new algebraic properties of the well-studied del Pezzo 3 quiver and geometric properties of its corresponding brane tiling. In particular, a factorization formula for the cluster variables arising from a large class of mutation sequences (called $τ-$mutation sequences) is proven; this factorization also gives a recursion on the cluster variables produced by such sequences. We can realize these sequences as walks in a triangular lattice using a correspondence between …
