We prove a conjecture of Yuster and Caro about the sum of the p-powers of the degrees of a graph of order n without a specified even cycle. Our proof is based on a new sufficient condition for long paths, that may be useful in other applications as well.
A cycle in a graph is called dominating if every edge of the graph is incident with a vertex of the cycle. In this paper, we investigate forbidden pairs guaranteeing the existence of a dominating cycle in 2-connected graphs.
Fix $k \ge 2$ and let $H$ be a graph with $χ(H) = k+1$ containing a critical edge. We show that for sufficiently large $n$, the unique $n$-vertex $H$-free graph containing the maximum number of cycles is $T_k(n)$. This resolves both a question and a conjecture of Arman, Gunderson and Tsaturian.
A cycle is a graph is dominating if every edge of the graph is incident with a vertex of the cycle. In this paper, we investigate the characterization of the class of the forbidden pairs guaranteeing the existence of a dominating cycle and show the following two results: (i) Every $2$-connected $\{P_{5}, K_{4}^{-}\}$-free graph contains a longest cycle which is a dominating cycle. (ii) Every $2$-connected $\{P_{5}, W^{*}\}$-free graph contains a longest cycle which is a dominating cycle. Here $P_{5}$ is the path of order $5$, $K_{4}^{-}$ is the graph obtained from the complete graph of order $…
Motivated by his work on the classification of countable homogeneous oriented graphs, Cherlin asked about the typical structure of oriented graphs (i) without a transitive triangle, or (ii) without an oriented triangle. We give an answer to these questions (which is not quite the predicted one). Our approach is based on the recent `hypergraph containers' method, developed independently by Saxton and Thomason as well as by Balogh, Morris and Samotij. Moreover, our results generalise to forbidden transitive tournaments and forbidden oriented cycles of any order, and also apply to digraphs. Along…
This paper gives tight upper bounds on the largest eigenvalue q(G) of the signless Laplacian of graphs with no 4-cycle and no 5-cycle. If n is odd, let F_{n} be the friendship graph of order n; if n is even, let F_{n} be F_{n-1} with an edge hanged to its center. It is shown that if G is a graph of order n, with no 4-cycle, then q(G)<q(F_{n}), unless G=F_{n}. Let S_{n,k} be the join of a complete graph of order k and an independent set of order n-k. It is shown that if G is a graph of order n, with no 5-cycle, then q(G)<q(S_{n,2}), unless G=S_{n,k}. It is shown that these results are significa…
Let G be a graph of order n and let q(G) be that largest eigenvalue of the signless Laplacian of G. In this note it is shown that if k>1 and q(G)>=n+2k-2, then G contains cycles of length l whenever 2<l<2k+3. This bound is asymptotically tight. It implies an asymptotic solution to a recent conjecture about the maximum q(G) of a graph G with no cycle of a specified length.
Let $G$ be a non-bipartite graph which does not contain any odd cycle of length at most $2k+1$. In this paper, we determine the maximum $Q$-index of $G$ if its order is fixed, and the corresponding extremal graph is uniquely characterized. Moreover, if the size of $G$ is given, the maximum $Q$-index of $G$ and the unique extremal graph are also proved.
We introduce a method of decomposing the family of intervals along a cyclic permutation into chains to determine the size of the largest family of subsets of $[n]:= \{1,2,...,n\}$ not containing one or more given posets as a subposet. De Bonis, Katona and Swanepoel determined the size of the largest butterfly-free family. We strengthen this result by showing that, for certain posets containing the butterfly poset as a subposet, the same bound holds. We also obtain the corresponding LYM-type inequalities.
In 1974, Goodman and Hedetniemi proved that every 2-connected $(K_{1,3},K_{1,3}+e)$-free graph is hamiltonian. This result gave rise many other hamiltonicity conditions for various pairs and triples of forbidden connected subgraphs under additional connectivity conditions. In 1997, it was proved that a single forbidden connected subgraph $R$ in 2-connected graphs can create only a trivial class of hamiltonian graphs (complete graphs) with $R=P_3$. In this paper we prove that a single forbidden subgraph $R$ can create a non trivial class of hamiltonian graphs if $R$ is disconnected: $(\ast1)$ e…
Let $q\left( G\right) $ be the $Q$-index (the largest eigenvalue of the signless Laplacian) of $G$. Let $S_{n,k}$ be the graph obtained by joining each vertex of a complete graph of order $k$ to each vertex of an independent set of order $n-k.$ The main result of this paper is the following theorem: Let $k\geq3,$ $n\geq110k^{2},$ and $G$ be a graph of order $n$. If $G$ has no $C_{2k+1},$ then $q\left( G\right) <q\left( S_{n,k}\right) ,$ unless $G=S_{n,k}.$ This result proves the odd case of the conjecture in [M.A.A. de Freitas, V. Nikiforov, and L. Patuzzi, Maxima of the $Q$-index: forbidden $…
We study choosability with separation which is a constrained version of list coloring of graphs. A (k,d)-list assignment L on a graph G is a function that assigns to each vertex v a list L(v) of at least k colors and for any adjacent pair xy, the lists L(x) and L(y) share at most d colors. A graph G is (k,d)-choosable if there exists an L-coloring of G for every (k,d)-list assignment L. This concept is also known as choosability with separation. We prove that planar graphs without 4-cycles are (3,1)-choosable and that planar graphs without 5-cycles and 6-cycles are (3,1)-choosable. In addition…
Let $G$ be a graph of order $n$ and let $q\left( G\right) $ be the largest eigenvalue of the signless Laplacian of $G$. Let $S_{n,k}$ be the graph obtained by joining each vertex of a complete graph of order $k$ to each vertex of an independent set of order $n-k;$ and let $S_{n,k}^{+}$ be the graph obtained by adding an edge to $S_{n,k}.$ It is shown that if $k\geq2,$ $n\geq400k^{2},$ and $G$ is a graph of order $n,$ with no cycle of length $2k+2,$ then $q\left( G\right) <q\left( S_{n,k}^{+}\right) ,$ unless $G=S_{n,k}^{+}.$ This result completes the proof of a conjecture of de Freitas, Nikifo…
Let $k$ and $r$ be two integers with $k \ge 2$ and $k\ge r \ge 1$. In this paper we show that (1) if a strongly connected digraph $D$ contains no directed cycle of length $1$ modulo $k$, then $D$ is $k$-colorable; and (2) if a digraph $D$ contains no directed cycle of length $r$ modulo $k$, then $D$ can be vertex-colored with $k$ colors so that each color class induces an acyclic subdigraph in $D$. The first result gives an affirmative answer to a question posed by Tuza in 1992, and the second implies the following strong form of a conjecture of Diwan, Kenkre and Vishwanathan: If an undirected…
We call a graph $G$ pancyclic if it contains at least one cycle of every possible length $m$, for $3\le m\le |V(G)|$. In this paper, we define a new property called chorded pancyclicity. We explore forbidden subgraphs in claw-free graphs sufficient to imply that the graph contains at least one chorded cycle of every possible length $4, 5, \ldots, |V(G)|$. In particular, certain paths and triangles with pendant paths are forbidden.
The square of a graph is obtained by adding additional edges joining all pair of vertices of distance two in the original graph. Particularly, if $C$ is a hamiltonian cycle of a graph $G$, then the square of $C$ is called a hamiltonian square of $G$. In this paper, we characterize all possible forbidden pairs, which implies the containment of a hamiltonian square, in a 4-connected graph. The connectivity condition is necessary as, except $K_3$ and $K_4$, the square of a cycle is always 4-connected.
The vertex arboricity $a(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum $k$ such that $V(G)$ can be partitioned into $k$ sets where each set induces a forest. For a planar graph $G$, it is known that $a(G)\leq 3$. In two recent papers, it was proved that planar graphs without $k$-cycles for some $k\in\{3, 4, 5, 6, 7\}$ have vertex arboricity at most 2. For a toroidal graph $G$, it is known that $a(G)\leq 4$. Let us consider the following question: do toroidal graphs without $k$-cycles have vertex arboricity at most 2? It was known that the question is true for k=3, and recently, Zhang proved the question i…
Given a graph $G$, the strong clique number $ω_2'(G)$ of $G$ is the cardinality of a largest collection of edges every pair of which are incident or connected by an edge in $G$. We study the strong clique number of graphs missing some set of cycle lengths. For a graph $G$ of large enough maximum degree $Δ$, we show among other results the following: $ω_2'(G)\le5Δ^2/4$ if $G$ is triangle-free; $ω_2'(G)\le3(Δ-1)$ if $G$ is $C_4$-free; $ω_2'(G)\leΔ^2$ if $G$ is $C_{2k+1}$-free for some $k\ge 2$. These bounds are attained by natural extremal examples. Our work extends and improves upon previous wo…
Using the Carlson-Simpson theorem, we give a new general condition for a structure in a finite binary relational language to have finite big Ramsey degrees
A {\em $(d,h)$-decomposition} of a graph $G$ is an order pair $(D,H)$ such that $H$ is a subgraph of $G$ where $H$ has the maximum degree at most $h$ and $D$ is an acyclic orientation of $G-E(H)$ of maximum out-degree at most $d$. A graph $G$ is {\em $(d, h)$-decomposable} if $G$ has a $(d,h)$-decomposition. Let $G$ be a graph embeddable in a surface of nonnegative characteristic. In this paper, we prove the following results. (1) If $G$ has no chord $5$-cycles or no chord $6$-cycles or no chord $7$-cycles and no adjacent $4$-cycles, then $G$ is $(3,1)$-decomposable, which generalizes the resu…
The research in the present paper was motivated by the conjecture of Ryjáček that every locally connected graph is weakly pancyclic. For a connected locally connected graph $G$ of order at least $3$, our results are as follows: If $G$ is $(K_1+(K_1\cup K_2))$-free, then $G$ is weakly pancyclic. If $G$ is $(K_1+(K_1\cup K_2))$-free, then $G$ is fully cycle extendable if and only if $2δ(G)\geq n(G)$. If $G$ is $\{ K_1+K_1+\bar{K}_3,K_1+P_4\}$-free or $\{ K_1+K_1+\bar{K}_3,K_1+(K_1\cup P_3)\}$-free, then $G$ is fully cycle extendable. If $G$ is distinct from $K_1+K_1+\bar{K}_3$ and $\{ K_1+P_4,K_…
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a class of given graphs. A graph $G$ is said to be $\mathcal{H}$-free if $G$ contains no induced copies of $H$ for any $H \in \mathcal{H}$. In this article, we characterize all pairs $\{R,S\}$ of graphs such that every connected $\{R,S\}$-free graph has the same edge-connectivity and minimum degree.
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph of order $n$ and let $γ_{R}(G)$ and $\partial (G)$ denote the Roman domination number and the differential of $G,$ respectively. In this paper we prove that for any integer $k\geq 0$, if $G$ is a graph of order $n\geq 6k+9$, minimum degree $δ\geq 2,$ which does not contain any induced $\{C_{5},C_{8},\ldots ,C_{3k+2}\}$% -cycles, then $γ_{R}(G)\leq \frac{(4k+8)n}{6k+11}$. This bound is an improvement of the bounds given in [E.W. Chambers, B. Kinnersley, N. Prince, and D.B. West, Extremal problems for Roman domination, SIAM J. Discrete Math. 23 (2009) 1575--1586] when $k…
In this paper we extend a result about a sufficient condition for Hamiltonicity for finite graphs by Broersma and Veldmann to locally finite graphs. In order to do this we use topological circles within the Freudenthal compactification of a locally finite graph as infinite cycles. The condition we focus on in this paper is in terms of forbidden induced subgraphs, namely being claw-free and a relaxation of being paw-free.
Given a set $\mathcal{F}$ of graphs, a graph $G$ is $\mathcal{F}$-free if $G$ does not contain any member of $\mathcal{F}$ as an induced subgraph. Barrus, Kumbhat, and Hartke [M. D. Barrus, M. Kumbhat, and S. G. Hartke, Graph classes characterized both by forbidden subgraphs and degree sequences, J. Graph Theory (2008), no. 2, 131--148] called $\mathcal{F}$ a degree-sequence-forcing (DSF) set if, for each graph $G$ in the class $\mathcal{C}$ of $\mathcal{F}$-free graphs, every realization of the degree sequence of $G$ is also in $\mathcal{C}$. A DSF set is minimal if no proper subset is also D…
For a degree sequence, we define the set of edges that appear in every labeled realization of that sequence as forced, while the edges that appear in none as forbidden. We examine structure of graphs whose degree sequences contain either forced or forbidden edges. Among the things we show, we determine the structure of the forced or forbidden edge sets, the relationship between the sizes of forced and forbidden sets for a sequence, and the resulting structural consequences to their realizations. This includes showing that the diameter of every realization of a degree sequence containing forced…
All planar graphs are 4-colorable and 5-choosable, while some planar graphs are not 4-choosable. Determining which properties guarantee that a planar graph can be colored using lists of size four has received significant attention. In terms of constraining the structure of the graph, for any $\ell \in \{3,4,5,6,7\}$, a planar graph is 4-choosable if it is $\ell$-cycle-free. In terms of constraining the list assignment, one refinement of $k$-choosability is choosability with separation. A graph is $(k,s)$-choosable if the graph is colorable from lists of size $k$ where adjacent vertices have at…
Given a graph $G$, the strong clique number of $G$, denoted $ω_S(G)$, is the maximum size of a set $S$ of edges such that every pair of edges in $S$ has distance at most $2$ in the line graph of $G$. As a relaxation of the renowned Erdős--Nešetřil conjecture regarding the strong chromatic index, Faudree et al. suggested investigating the strong clique number, and conjectured a quadratic upper bound in terms of the maximum degree. Recently, Cames van Batenburg, Kang, and Pirot conjectured a linear upper bound in terms of the maximum degree for graphs without even cycles. Namely, if $G$ is a $C_…
A $(d,h)$-decomposition of a graph $G$ is an ordered pair $(D, H)$ such that $H$ is a subgraph of $G$ of maximum degree at most $h$ and $D$ is an acyclic orientation of $G-E(H)$ with maximum out-degree at most $d$. In this paper, we prove that for $l \in \{5, 6, 7, 8, 9\}$, every planar graph without $4$- and $l$-cycles is $(2,1)$-decomposable. As a consequence, for every planar graph $G$ without $4$- and $l$-cycles, there exists a matching $M$, such that $G - M$ is $3$-DP-colorable and has Alon-Tarsi number at most $3$. In particular, $G$ is $1$-defective $3$-DP-colorable, $1$-defective $3$-p…
The Caccetta-Haggkvist conjecture made in 1978 asserts that every orgraph on n vertices without oriented cycles of length <= l must contain a vertex of outdegree at most (n-1)/l. It has a rather elaborate set of (conjectured) extremal configurations. In this paper we consider the case l=3 that received quite a significant attention in the literature. We identify three orgraphs on four vertices each that are missing as an induced subgraph in all known extremal examples and prove the Caccetta-Haggkvist conjecture for orgraphs missing as induced subgraphs any of these orgraphs, along with cycles …
The local properties problem of Erdős and Shelah generalizes many Ramsey problems and some distinct distances problems. In this work, we derive a variety of new bounds for the local properties problem and its variants. We do this by continuing to develop the color energy technique --- a variant of the concept of additive energy from Additive Combinatorics. In particular, we generalize the concept of color energy to higher color energies, and combine these with Extremal Graph Theory results about graphs with no cycles or subdivisions of size $k$.
Considering connected $K_{1,3}$-free graphs with independence number at least $3$, Chudnovsky and Seymour (2010) showed that every such graph, say $G$, is $2ω$-colourable where $ω$ denotes the clique number of $G$. We study $(K_{1,3}, Y)$-free graphs, and show that the following three statements are equivalent. (1) Every connected $(K_{1,3}, Y)$-free graph which is distinct from an odd cycle and which has independence number at least $3$ is perfect. (2) Every connected $(K_{1,3}, Y)$-free graph which is distinct from an odd cycle and which has independence number at least $3$ is $ω$-colourable…
Although the chromatic number of a graph is not known in general, attempts have been made to find good bounds for the number. Here we prove that for a graph G with two forbidden subgraphs and maximum degree less than or equal to 2ω - 3, χ equals its maximum clique size. We also give examples to show that the condition is necessary.
In a series of papers, of which this is the first, we study sufficient conditions for Hamiltonicity in terms of forbidden induced subgraphs and extend such results to locally finite infinite graphs. For this we use topological circles within the Freudenthal compactification of a locally finite graph as infinite cycles. In this paper we focus on conditions involving claws, nets and bulls as induced subgraphs. We extend Hamiltonicity results for finite claw-free and net-free graphs by Shepherd to locally finite graphs. Moreover, we generalise a classification of finite claw-free and net-free gra…
Given a positive integer $p$ and a graph $G$ with degree sequence $d_1,\dots,d_n$, we define $e_p(G)=\sum_{i=1}^n d_i^p$. Caro and Yuster introduced a Turán-type problem for $e_p(G)$: Given a positive integer $p$ and a graph $H$, determine the function $ex_p(n,H)$, which is the maximum value of $e_p(G)$ taken over all graphs $G$ on $n$ vertices that do not contain $H$ as a subgraph. Clearly, $ex_1(n,H)=2ex(n,H)$, where $ex(n,H)$ denotes the classical Turán number. Caro and Yuster determined the function $ex_p(n, P_\ell)$ for sufficiently large $n$, where $p\geq 2$ and $P_\ell$ denotes the path…
A properly colored cycle (path) in an edge-colored graph is a cycle (path) with consecutive edges assigned distinct colors. A monochromatic triangle is a cycle of length $3$ with the edges assigned a same color. It is known that every edge-colored complete graph without containing monochromatic triangles always contains a properly colored Hamilton path. In this paper, we investigate the existence of properly colored cycles in edge-colored complete graphs when monochromatic triangles are forbidden. We obtain a vertex-pancyclic analogous result combined with a characterization of all the excepti…
The parity of the length of paths and cycles is a classical and well-studied topic in graph theory and theoretical computer science. The parity constraints can be extended to label constraints in a group-labeled graph, which is a directed graph with each arc labeled by an element of a group. Recently, paths and cycles in group-labeled graphs have been investigated, such as packing non-zero paths and cycles, where "non-zero" means that the identity element is a unique forbidden label. In this paper, we present a solution to finding an $s$--$t$ path with two labels forbidden in a group-labeled g…
For a bipartite graph G, let h(G) be the largest t such that either G or the bipartite complement of G contain K_{t,t}. For a class F of graphs, let h(F)= min {h(G): G\in F}. We say that a bipartite graph H is strongly acyclic if neither H nor its bipartite complement contain a cycle. By Forb(n, H) we denote a set of bipartite graphs with parts of sizes n each, that do not contain H as an induced bipartite subgraph respecting the sides. One can easily show that h(Forb(n,H))= O(n^{1-s}) for a positive s if H is not strongly acyclic. Here, we prove that h(Forb(n, H)) is linear in n for all stron…
For every graph $X$, we consider the class of all connected $\{K_{1,3}, X\}$-free graphs which are distinct from an odd cycle and have independence number at least $4$, and we show that all graphs in the class are perfect if and only if $X$ is an induced subgraph of some of $P_6$, $K_1 \cup P_5$, $2P_3$, $Z_2$ or $K_1 \cup Z_1$. Furthermore, for $X$ chosen as $2K_1 \cup K_3$, we list all eight imperfect graphs belonging to the class; and for every other choice of $X$, we show that there are infinitely many such graphs. In addition, for $X$ chosen as $B_{1,2}$, we describe the structure of all …
We characterise the pairs of graphs $\{ X, Y \}$ such that all $\{ X, Y \}$-free graphs (distinct from $C_5$) are perfect. Similarly, we characterise pairs $\{ X, Y \}$ such that all $\{ X, Y \}$-free graphs (distinct from $C_5$) are $ω$-colourable (that is, their chromatic number is equal to their clique number). More generally, we show characterizations of pairs $\{ X, Y \}$ for perfectness and $ω$-colourability of all connected $\{ X, Y \}$-free graphs which are of independence at least $3$, distinct from an odd cycle, and of order at least $n_0$, and similar characterisations subject to ea…
We analyze the asymptotic extremal growth rate of the Betti numbers of clique complexes of graphs on n vertices not containing a fixed forbidden induced subgraph H. In particular, we prove a theorem of the alternative: for any H the growth rate achieves exactly one of five possible exponentials, that is, independent of the field of coefficients, the nth root of the maximal total Betti number over n-vertex graphs with no induced copy of H has a limit, as n tends to infinity, and, ranging over all H, exactly five different limits are attained. For the interesting case where H is the 4-cycle, the…
An undirected graph G is called a VPT graph if it is the vertex intersection graph of a family of paths in a tree. The class of graphs which admit a VPT representation in a host tree with maximum degree at most h is denoted by [h,2,1]. The classes [h,2,1] are closed by taking induced subgraphs, therefore each one can be characterized by a family of minimal forbidden induced subgraphs. In this paper we associate the minimal forbidden induced subgraphs for [h,2,1] which are VPT with (color) h-critical graphs. We describe how to obtain minimal forbidden induced subgraphs from critical graphs, eve…
For $n\geq 3$ and $r=r(n) \geq 3$, let $\boldsymbol{k} =\boldsymbol{k}(n)=(k_1, \ldots, k_n)$ be a sequence of non-negative integers with sum $M(\boldsymbol{k})=\sum_{j=1}^{n} k_j$. We assume that $M(\boldsymbol{k})$ is divisible by $r$ for infinitely many values of $n$, and restrict our attention to these values. Let $X=X(n)$ be a simple $r$-uniform hypergraph on the vertex set $V=\{v_1,v_2, \ldots, v_n\}$ with $t$ edges and maximum degree $x_{\max}$. We denote by $\mathcal{H}_r(\boldsymbol{k})$ the set of all simple $r$-uniform hypergraphs on the vertex set $V$ with degree sequence $\boldsym…
