We investigate linear and nonlinear transport across single-walled carbon nanotube quantum dots weakly coupled to spin-polarized leads. We consider tubes of finite length and small diameter, where not only forward scattering contributions of the Coulomb potential, but also short-ranged processes play an important role. In particular, they induce exchange effects leading for electron fillings 4n+2 either to a non-degenerate groundstate of spin S=0 or to a triplet groundstate. In the linear regime we present analytical results for the conductance - for both the S=0 and the triplet groundstate - and demonstrate that an external magnetic field is crucial to reveal the spin nature of the groundstates. In the nonlinear regime we show stability diagrams that clearly distinguish between the different groundstates. We observe a negative differential conductance (NDC) effect in the S=0 groundstate for antiparallel lead magnetization. In presence of an external magnetic field spin blockade effects can be detected, again leading to NDC effects for both groundstates.
Long linear carbon chains encapsulated inside carbon nanotubes are a very close realization of carbyne, the truly one-dimensional allotrope of carbon. Here we study individual pairs of double-walled carbon nanotubes and encapsulated linear carbon chains by tip-enhanced Raman scattering. We observe that the radial breathing mode of the inner nanotube correlates with the frequency of the carbon chain's Raman mode, revealing that the nanotube chirality determines the vibronic and electronic properties of the encapsulated carbon chain. We provide the missing link that connects the properties of th…
We perform scanning gate microscopy on individual suspended carbon nanotube quantum dots. The size and position of the quantum dots can be visually identified from the concentric high conductance rings. For the ultra clean devices used in this study, two new effects are clearly identified. Electrostatic screening creates non-overlapping multiple sets of Coulomb rings from a single quantum dot. In double quantum dots, by changing the tip voltage, the interactions between the quantum dots can be tuned from the weak to strong coupling regime.
We present ab initio calculations on the band structure and density of states of single wall semiconducting carbon nanotubes with high degrees (up to 25%) of B, Si and N substitution. The doping process consists of two phases: different carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for a constant doping rate and different doping rates for the zigzag (8, 0) carbon nanotube. We analyze the doping dependence of nanotubes on the doping rate and the nanotube type. Using these results, we select the zigzag (8, 0) carbon nanotube for toxic gas sensor calculation and obtain the total and partial densities of states for CNT…
Local Semiconducting Transition in Armchair Carbon Nanotubes: The Effect of Periodic Bi-site Perturbation on Electronic and Transport Properties of Carbon Nanotubes
The objective of the present paper is to investigate the mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes. We use classical molecular dynamics simulation in order to study the effect of external compression, bending and torsion to nanotubes. We find that in the low temperature limit, the nanotubes are resilient, sustaining extreme strain without signs of brittleness or plasticity. For high temperatures and under tension the nanotubes show brittle or plastic behavior.
We develop the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) formalism for the superconductivity of carbon nanotubes. It is found that the superconducting transition temperature Tc of single-wall carbon nanotubes decreases exponentially with the increase of the tube diameter because the density of states near the Fermi energy is inversely proportional to the tube diameter. For the multi-wall carbon nanotubes, the Cooper paring hopping between layers enhances the superconducting correlation and increases the superconducting transition temperature, which is consistent with the experimental observation.
We present a two-step procedure to probe hotspots of plasmon-enhanced Raman scattering with carbon nanotubes. Dielectrophoretic deposition places a small carbon nanotube bundle on top of plasmonic Au nanodimer. After 'pre-characterising' both the nanotubes and dimer structure, we subsequently use the tip of an AFM to push the bundle into the plasmonic hotspot located in the 25nm wide dimer gap, characterize its location inside the gap, and observe the onset of plasmon-enhanced Raman scattering. Evidence for the activation of the carbon nanotube's double-resonant D-mode by the near-field of the…
Deformations of single-wall carbon nanotubes are investigated within the tight-binding model with deformation-dependent hopping energies. We show that the nanotubes tend to twist and shrink spontaneously at zero temperature. The explicit values of the deformation parameters are computed for a wide range of nanotubes with varying diameter and chirality. The changes of the spectral gap associated with the spontaneous deformation are shown to depend on the chirality of the nanotubes.
Stabilization of carbon nanotubes by filling with inner tubes: An optical spectroscopy study on double-walled carbon nanotubes under hydrostatic pressure
Photoluminescent carbon nanotubes are expected to become versatile room-temperature single-photon sources that have applications in quantum information processing. Quantum emission from carbon nanotubes is often induced by localization of excitons or exciton-exciton annihilation. Here, we modify the local energy landscape of excitons by decorating nanoscale pentacene particles onto air-suspended single-walled carbon nanotubes. Directional exciton diffusion from the undecorated region to the decorated site is demonstrated, suggesting exciton trapping induced by local dielectric screening from p…
We demonstrate theoretically that an off-resonant circularly polarized electromagnetic field can induce a persistent current in carbon nanotubes, which corresponds to electron rotation about the nanotube axis. As a consequence, the nanotubes acquire magnetic moment along the axis, which depends on their crystal structure and can be detected in state-of-the-art measurements. This effect and related phenomena are analyzed within the developed Floquet theory describing the electronic properties of the nanotubes irradiated by the field.
Single wall carbon nanotubes cooled to cryogenic temperatures are outstanding electronic as well as nano-electromechanical model systems. To probe a largely unperturbed system, we measure a suspended carbon-nanotube device where the nanotube is grown in the last fabrication step, thus avoiding damage and residues from subsequent processing. In this ultra-clean device, we observe the transport spectrum and its interaction with nano-electromechanics over a wide gate voltage range and thereby over a wide range of coupling parameters between the quantum dot and the contact electrodes.
Zitterbewegung (ZB, trembling motion) of electrons in semiconductor carbon nanotubes is described taking into account dephasing processes. The density matrix formalism is used for the theory. Differences between decay of ZB oscillations due to electron localization and that due to dephasing are discussed.
