We consider transmission of stationary and ergodic sources over non-ergodic composite channels with channel state information at the receiver (CSIR). Previously we introduced alternate capacity definitions to Shannon capacity, including the capacity versus outage and the expected capacity. These generalized definitions relax the constraint of Shannon capacity that all transmitted information must be decoded at the receiver. In this work alternate end-to-end distortion metrics such as the distortion versus outage and the expected distortion are introduced to relax the constraint that a single distortion level has to be maintained for all channel states. For transmission of stationary and ergodic sources over stationary and ergodic channels, the classical Shannon separation theorem enables separate design of source and channel codes and guarantees optimal performance. For generalized communication systems, we show that different end-to-end distortion metrics lead to different conclusions about separation optimality even for the same source and channel models.
In this paper we prove the separation of source-network coding and channel coding in wireline networks. For the purposes of this work, a wireline network is any network of independent, memoryless, point-to-point, finite-alphabet channels used to transmit dependent sources either losslessly or subject to a distortion constraint. In deriving this result, we also prove that in a general memoryless network with dependent sources, lossless and zero-distortion reconstruction are equivalent provided that the conditional entropy of each source given the other sources is non-zero. Furthermore, we exten…
This paper proves the separation between source-network coding and channel coding in networks of noisy, discrete, memoryless channels. We show that the set of achievable distortion matrices in delivering a family of dependent sources across such a network equals the set of achievable distortion matrices for delivering the same sources across a distinct network which is built by replacing each channel by a noiseless, point-to-point bit-pipe of the corresponding capacity. Thus a code that applies source-network coding across links that are made almost lossless through the application of independ…
A new approach to joint source-channel coding is presented in the context of communicating correlated sources over multiple access channels. Similar to the separation architecture, the joint source-channel coding system architecture in this approach is modular, whereby the source encoding and channel decoding operations are decoupled. However, unlike the separation architecture, the same codeword is used for both source coding and channel coding, which allows the resulting hybrid coding scheme to achieve the performance of the best known joint source-channel coding schemes. Applications of the…
Lossy coding of correlated sources over a multiple access channel (MAC) is studied. First, a joint source-channel coding scheme is presented when the decoder has correlated side information. Next, the optimality of separate source and channel coding, that emerges from the availability of a common observation at the encoders, or side information at the encoders and the decoder, is investigated. It is shown that separation is optimal when the encoders have access to a common observation whose lossless recovery is required at the decoder, and the two sources are independent conditioned on this co…
We examine the issue of separation and code design for networks that operate over finite fields. We demonstrate that source-channel (or source-network) separation holds for several canonical network examples like the noisy multiple access channel and the erasure degraded broadcast channel, when the whole network operates over a common finite field. This robustness of separation is predicated on the fact that noise and inputs are independent, and we examine the failure of separation when noise is dependent on inputs in multiple access channels. Our approach is based on the sufficiency of linear…
Consider a multi-source network coding problem with correlated sources. While the fundamental limits are known, achieving them, in general, involves a computational burden due to the complex decoding process. Efficient solutions, on the other hand, are by large based on source and network coding separation, thus imposing strict topological constraints on the networks which can be solved. In this work, we introduce a novel notion of separation of source and network coding using Gács-Körner Common Information (CI). Unlike existing notions of separation, the sufficient condition for this separati…
We consider a multi-way relay network with an orthogonal uplink and correlated sources, and we characterise reliable communication (in the usual Shannon sense) with a single-letter expression. The characterisation is obtained using a joint source-channel random-coding argument, which is based on a combination of Wyner et al.'s "Cascaded Slepian-Wolf Source Coding" and Tuncel's "Slepian-Wolf Coding over Broadcast Channels". We prove a separation theorem for the special case of two nodes; that is, we show that a modular code architecture with separate source and channel coding functions is (asym…
Approaching capacity with low complexity is a very challenging task. In this paper, we review and compare three promising coding solutions to achieve that, which are suitable for future very high-throughput, low-complexity optical communications.
Visible light communication (VLC) could provide short-range optical wireless communication together with illumination using LED lighting. However, conventional forward error correction (FEC) codes for reliable communication do not have the features for dimming support and flicker mitigation which are required in VLC for the main functionality of lighting. Therefore, auxiliary coding techniques are usually needed, which eventually reduce the coding efficiency and increase the complexity. In this paper, a polar codes-based FEC coding scheme for dimmable VLC is proposed to increase the coding eff…
An adaptive joint source-channel coding (JSCC) scheme is presented for transmitting correlated sources over discrete-memoryless two-way channels subject to distortion constraints. The proposed JSCC scheme makes use of the previously transmitted and received channel signals as well as the sources' correlation to facilitate coordination between terminals. It is shown that the adaptive scheme strictly subsumes prior lossy coding methods for two-way simultaneous transmission and yields a new adaptive separate source-channel coding result. Two examples are given to show the scheme's advantages.
We investigate binary block-codes (BBC). A BBC is defined as a vector of Boolean functions. We consider BBCs which are generated randomly, and using single-letter distributions. We characterize the vector of dependency spectrums of these BBCs. We use this vector to upper-bound the correlation between the outputs of two distributed BBCs. Finally, the upper-bound is used to show that the large blocklength single-letter coding schemes in the literature are sub-optimal in some multiterminal communication settings.
Source and channel coding over multiuser channels in which receivers have access to correlated source side information is considered. For several multiuser channel models necessary and sufficient conditions for optimal separation of the source and channel codes are obtained. In particular, the multiple access channel, the compound multiple access channel, the interference channel and the two-way channel with correlated sources and correlated receiver side information are considered, and the optimality of separation is shown to hold for certain source and side information structures. Interestin…
A joint communication and channel state estimation problem is investigated, in which reliable information transmission over a noisy channel, and high-fidelity estimation of the channel state, are simultaneously sought. The tradeoff between the achievable information rate and the estimation distortion is quantified by formulating the problem as a constrained channel coding problem, and the resulting capacity-distortion function characterizes the fundamental limit of the joint communication and channel estimation problem. The analytical results are illustrated through case studies, and further i…
With the phenomenal growth of the Internet of Things (IoT), Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC) has potentially been the enabler to guarantee the stringent requirements on latency and reliability. However, how to achieve low latency and ultra-reliability with the random arrival remains open. In this paper, a queue-aware variable-length channel coding is presented over the single URLLC user link, in which the finite blocklength of channel coding is determined based on the random arrival. More particularly, a cross-layer approach is proposed for the URLLC user to establish the opti…
A new channel coding approach was proposed in [1] for random multiple access communication over the discrete-time memoryless channel. The coding approach allows users to choose their communication rates independently without sharing the rate information among each other or with the receiver. The receiver will either decode the message or report a collision depending on whether reliable message recovery is possible. It was shown that, asymptotically as the codeword length goes to infinity, the set of communication rates supporting reliable message recovery can be characterized by an achievable …
Computation codes in network information theory are designed for the scenarios where the decoder is not interested in recovering the information sources themselves, but only a function thereof. Körner and Marton showed for distributed source coding that such function decoding can be achieved more efficiently than decoding the full information sources. Compute-and-forward has shown that function decoding, in combination with network coding ideas, is a useful building block for end-to-end communication. In both cases, good computation codes are the key component in the coding schemes. In this wo…
Network coding is an efficient means to improve the spectrum efficiency of satellite communications. However, its resilience to eavesdropping attacks is not well understood. This paper studies the confidentiality issue in a bidirectional satellite network consisting of two mobile users who want to exchange message via a multibeam satellite using the XOR network coding protocol. We aim to maximize the sum secrecy rate by designing the optimal beamforming vector along with optimizing the return and forward link time allocation. The problem is non-convex, and we find its optimal solution using se…
We study the problem of reducing the communication overhead from a noisy wire-tap channel or storage system where data is encoded as a matrix, when more columns (or their linear combinations) are available. We present its applications to reducing communication overheads in universal secure linear network coding and secure distributed storage with crisscross errors and erasures and in the presence of a wire-tapper. Our main contribution is a method to transform coding schemes based on linear rank-metric codes, with certain properties, to schemes with lower communication overheads. By applying t…
In this paper, we consider a two-way or bidirectional communications system with a relay equipped with multiple antennas. We show that when the downlink channel state information is not known at the relay, the benefit of having additional antennas at the relay can only be obtained by using decode and forward (DF) but not amplify and forward (AF). The gain becomes significant when we employ transmit diversity together with wireless network coding. We also demonstrate how the performance of such system can be improved by performing antenna selection at the relay. Our results show that if downlin…
It is shown that polar coding schemes achieve the known achievable rate regions for several multi-terminal communications problems including lossy distributed source coding, multiple access channels and multiple descriptions coding. The results are valid for arbitrary alphabet sizes (binary or nonbinary) and arbitrary distributions (symmetric or asymmetric).
Classical communication paradigms focus on accurately transmitting bits over a noisy channel, and Shannon theory provides a fundamental theoretical limit on the rate of reliable communications. In this approach, bits are treated equally, and the communication system is oblivious to what meaning these bits convey or how they would be used. Future communications towards intelligence and conciseness will predictably play a dominant role, and the proliferation of connected intelligent agents requires a radical rethinking of coded transmission paradigm to support the new communication morphology on…
In this paper, we propose novel energy efficient adaptive network coding and modulation schemes for time variant channels. We evaluate such schemes under a realistic channel model for open area environments and Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) satellites. Compared to non-adaptive network coding and adaptive rate efficient network-coded schemes for time variant channels, we show that our proposed schemes, through physical layer awareness can be designed to transmit only if a target quality of service (QoS) is achieved. As a result, such schemes can provide remarkable energy savings.
We introduce a technique for establishing and amplifying gaps between parameters of network coding and index coding. The technique uses linear programs to establish separations between combinatorial and coding-theoretic parameters and applies hypergraph lexicographic products to amplify these separations. This entails combining the dual solutions of the lexicographic multiplicands and proving that they are a valid dual of the product. Our result is general enough to apply to a large family of linear programs. This blend of linear programs and lexicographic products gives a recipe for construct…
Real-time applications require latencies on the order of a millisecond with very high reliabilities, paralleling the requirements for high-performance industrial control. Current wireless technologies like WiFi, Bluetooth, LTE, etc. are unable to meet these stringent latency and reliability requirements, forcing the use of wired systems. This paper introduces a wireless communication protocol based on network coding that in conjunction with cooperative communication techniques builds the necessary diversity to achieve the target reliability. The proposed protocol is analyzed using a communicat…
In this paper, we propose two novel physical layer aware adaptive network coding and coded modulation schemes for time variant channels. The proposed schemes have been applied to different satellite communications scenarios with different Round Trip Times (RTT). Compared to adaptive network coding, and classical non-adaptive network coding schemes for time variant channels, as benchmarks, the proposed schemes demonstrate that adaptation of packet transmission based on the channel variation and corresponding erasures allows for significant gains in terms of throughput, delay and energy efficien…
The problem of distributed testing against independence with variable-length coding is considered when the \emph{average} and not the \emph{maximum} communication load is constrained as in previous works. The paper characterizes the optimum type-II error exponent of a single sensor single decision center system given a maximum type-I error probability when communication is either over a noise-free rate-$R$ link or over a noisy discrete memoryless channel (DMC) with stop-feedback. Specifically, let $ε$ denote the maximum allowed type-I error probability. Then the optimum exponent of the system …
An unconventional encoding scheme called concurrent coding, has recently been demonstrated and shown to offer interesting features and benefits in comparison to conventional techniques, e.g. robustness against burst errors and improved efficiency of transmitted power. This concept has been demonstrated for the first time with optical communications where standard light emitting diodes (LEDs) have been used to transmit information encoded with concurrent coding. The technique successfully transmits and decodes data despite unpredictable interruptions to the transmission causing significant drop…
An operational perspective is used to understand the relationship between source and channel coding. This is based on a direct reduction of one problem to another that uses random coding (and hence common randomness) but unlike all prior work, does not involve any functional computations, in particular, no mutual-information computations. This result is then used to prove a universal source-channel separation theorem in the rate-distortion context where universality is in the sense of a compound ``general channel.''
Is perfect error correction always worth the trouble? A framework is presented for the analysis of error detection and correction in multi-level systems of communication that takes into account degrees of freedom attended and ignored by different levels of analysis. It follows from this analysis that for a multi-level coding system, skipped or incomplete error correction at many levels can save energy and provide equally good results to perfect correction. This has relevance to approximate computing, and to questions of the robustness of machine learning applications. The finding also has sign…
We propose a joint source-channel-network coding scheme, based on compressive sensing principles, for wireless networks with AWGN channels (that may include multiple access and broadcast), with sources exhibiting temporal and spatial dependencies. Our goal is to provide a reconstruction of sources within an allowed distortion level at each receiver. We perform joint source-channel coding at each source by randomly projecting source values to a lower dimensional space. We consider sources that satisfy the restricted eigenvalue (RE) condition as well as more general sources for which the randomn…
This paper considers the problem of minimum cost communication of correlated sources over a network with multiple sinks, which consists of distributed source coding followed by routing. We introduce a new routing paradigm called dispersive information routing, wherein the intermediate nodes are allowed to `split' a packet and forward subsets of the received bits on each of the forward paths. This paradigm opens up a rich class of research problems which focus on the interplay between encoding and routing in a network. Unlike conventional routing methods such as in [1], dispersive information r…
Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) communication phase is an integral part of collaborative message dissemination in vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs). In this work, we apply index coding techniques to reduce the number of transmissions required for data exchange. The index coding problem has a sender, which tries to meet the demands of several receivers in a minimum number of transmissions. All these receivers have some prior knowledge of the messages, known as the side-information. In this work, we consider a particular case of the index coding problem, where multiple nodes want to share information …
We study reliable transmission of arbitrarily correlated sources over multiple-access relay channels (MARCs) and multiple-access broadcast relay channels (MABRCs). In MARCs only the destination is interested in reconstructing the sources, while in MABRCs both the relay and the destination want to reconstruct them. In addition to arbitrary correlation among the source signals at the users, both the relay and the destination have side information correlated with the source signals. Our objective is to determine whether a given pair of sources can be losslessly transmitted to the destination for …
In this paper we design network coding schemes for Differential Chaos Shift Keying (DCSK) modulation. In this work, non-coherent chaos-based communication system is used due to its simplicity and robustness to multipath propagation effects, while dispensing with any channel state information knowledge at the receiver. We propose a relay network using network coding and DCSK, where we first present a Physical layer Network Coding (PNC) scheme with two users, $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$, sharing the same spreading code and bandwidth, while synchronously transmitting their signals to the rela…
We consider a cache-aided communications system in which a transmitter communicates with many receivers over an erasure broadcast channel. The system serves as a basic model for communicating on-demand content during periods of high network congestion, where some content can be pre-placed in local caches near the receivers. We formulate the cache-aided communications problem as a joint cache-channel coding problem, and characterise some information-theoretic tradeoffs between reliable communications rates and cache sizes. We show that if the receivers experience different channel qualities, th…
This paper extends linear-complexity concatenated coding schemes to fountain communication over the discrete-time memoryless channel. Achievable fountain error exponents for one-level and multi-level concatenated fountain codes are derived. It is also shown that concatenated coding schemes possess interesting properties in several multi-user fountain communication scenarios.
We consider a cognitive radio network scenario where a primary transmitter and a secondary transmitter, respectively, communicate a message to their respective primary receiver and secondary receiver over a packet-based wireless link, using a joint automatic-repeat-request (ARQ) error control scheme. The secondary transmitter assists in the retransmission of the primary message, which improves the primary performance, and is granted limited access to the transmission resources. Conventional ARQ, as well as two network-coding schemes are investigated for application in the retransmission phase;…
A randomized covering-packing duality between source and channel coding will be discussed by considering the source coding problem of coding a source with a certain distortion level and by considering a channel which communicates the source within a certain distortion level. An operational view of source-channel separation for communication with a fidelity criterion will be discussed in brief.
Due to the short and bursty incoming messages, channel access activities in a wireless random access system are often fractional. The lack of frequent data support consequently makes it difficult for the receiver to estimate and track the time varying channel states with high precision. This paper investigates random multiple access communication over a compound wireless channel where channel realization is known neither at the transmitters nor at the receiver. An achievable rate and error probability tradeoff bound is derived under the non-asymptotic assumption of a finite codeword length. Th…
Minimum energy (ME) source coding is an effective technique for efficient communication with energy-constrained devices, such as sensor network nodes. In this paper, the principles of generalized ME source coding is developed that is broadly applicable. Two scenarios - fixed and variable length codewords - are analyzed. The application of this technique to RFID systems where ME source coding is particularly advantageous due to the asymmetric nature of data communications is demonstrated, a first to the best of our knowledge.
Superdense coding proved that entanglement-assisted quantum communications can improve the data transmission rates compared to classical systems. It allows sending 2 classical bits between the parties in exchange of 1 quantum bit and a pre-shared entangled Bell pair. This paper introduces a new protocol which is intended for distributed communication. Using a pre-shared entangled Bell pair and 1 classical bit 2,5 classical bits can be transmitted in average. This means not only valuable increase in capacity but the two-way distributed operation opens new fields of investigation.
We present a closed-form expression for the minimal delay that is achievable in a setting that combines a buffer and an erasure code, used to mitigate the packet delay variance. The erasure code is modeled according to the recent information-theoretic results on finite block length codes. Evaluations reveal that accurate knowledge of the network parameters is essential for optimal operation. Moreover, it is shown that, when the network packet delay variance is large, the buffer delay becomes negligible. Therefore, in this case the delay budget should be spent mainly on the erasure code.
A memoryless state-dependent multiple-access channel (MAC) is considered, where two transmitters wish to convey their messages to a single receiver while simultaneously sensing (estimating) the respective states via generalized feedbacks. For this channel, an improved inner bound is provided on the fundamental rate-distortions tradeoff which characterizes the communication rates the transmitters can achieve while simultaneously ensuring that their state-estimates satisfy desired distortion criteria. The new inner bound is based on a scheme where each transmitter codes over the generalized feed…
We use the term protocol coding to denote the communication strategies in which information is encoded through the actions taken by a certain communication protocol. In this work we investigate strategies for protocol coding via combinatorial ordering of the labelled user resources (packets, channels) in an existing, primary system. This introduces a new, secondary communication channel in the existing system, which has been considered in the prior work exclusively in a steganographic context. Instead, we focus on the use of secondary channel for reliable communication with newly introduced se…
This paper presents generalized channel coding theorems for a time-slotted distributed communication system where a transmitter-receiver pair is communicating in parallel with other transmitters. Assume that the channel code of each transmitter is chosen arbitrarily in each time slot. The coding choice of a transmitter is denoted by a code index parameter, which is known neither to other transmitters nor to the receiver. Fundamental performance limitation of the system is characterized using an achievable region defined in the space of the code index vectors. As the codeword length is taken to…
A novel inter-frame coding approach to the problem of varying channel-state conditions in broadcast wireless communication is developed in this paper; this problem causes the appropriate code-rate to vary across different transmitted frames and different receivers as well. The main aspect of the proposed approach is that it incorporates an iterative rate-matching process into the decoding of the received set of frames, such that: throughout inter-frame decoding, the code-rate of each frame is progressively lowered to or below the appropriate value, prior to applying or re-applying conventional…
The stability of scheduled multiaccess communication with random coding and independent decoding of messages is investigated. The number of messages that may be scheduled for simultaneous transmission is limited to a given maximum value, and the channels from transmitters to receiver are quasi-static, flat, and have independent fades. Requests for message transmissions are assumed to arrive according to an i.i.d. arrival process. Then, we show the following: (1) in the limit of large message alphabet size, the stability region has an interference limited information-theoretic capacity interpre…
Two-way relaying is one of the major applications of broadband communication satellites, for which an efficient technique is Physical Layer Network Coding (PLNC). Earlier studies have considered satellites employing PLNC with onboard processing. This paper investigates the performance of PLNC over non-regenerative satellites, as a majority of the operational and planned satellites have no onboard processing. Assuming that the channel magnitudes of the two users are equal, two operating conditions are considered with uncoded-QPSK relaying. In the first condition, both users are completely synch…
