In this paper, we consider a two-way or bidirectional communications system with a relay equipped with multiple antennas. We show that when the downlink channel state information is not known at the relay, the benefit of having additional antennas at the relay can only be obtained by using decode and forward (DF) but not amplify and forward (AF). The gain becomes significant when we employ transmit diversity together with wireless network coding. We also demonstrate how the performance of such system can be improved by performing antenna selection at the relay. Our results show that if downlink channel state information is known at the relay, network coding may not provide additional gain than simple antenna selection scheme.
We derive optimal SNR-based transmit antenna selection rules at the source and relay for the nonregenerative half duplex MIMO relay channel. While antenna selection is a suboptimal form of beamforming, it has the advantage that the optimization is tractable and can be implemented with only a few bits of feedback from the destination to the source and relay. We compare the bit error rate of optimal antenna selection at both the source and relay to other proposed beamforming techniques and propose methods for performing the necessary limited feedback.
A novel channel representation for a two-hop decentralized wireless relay network (DWRN) is proposed, where the relays operate in a completely distributive fashion. The modeling paradigm applies an analogous approach to the description method for a double-directional multipath propagation channel, and takes into account the finite system spatial resolution and the extended relay listening/transmitting time. Specifically, the double-directional information azimuth spectrum (IAS) is formulated to provide a compact representation of information flows in a DWRN. The proposed channel representation…
In this paper, we consider relay-assisted simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) for two-hop cooperative transmission, where a half-duplex multi-antenna relay adopts decode-and-forward (DF) relaying strategy for information forwarding. The relay is assumed to be energy-free and needs to harvest energy from the source node. By embedding power splitting (PS) at each relay antenna to coordinate the received energy and information, joint problem of determining PS ratios and power allocation at the multi-antenna relay node is formulated to maximize the end-to-end achievable ra…
This paper investigates the benefits of Amplify-and-Forward (AF) relaying in the setup of multi-antenna wireless networks. The concept of Random Sequential (RS) relaying is previously introduced in the literature and showed that it achieves the maximum diversity gain in a general multi-antenna network. Here, we show that random unitary matrix multiplication at the relay nodes empowers the RS scheme to achieve a better Diversity-Multiplexing Tradeoff (DMT) as compared to the traditional AF relaying. First, we study the case of a multi-antenna full-duplex single-relay two-hop network, for which …
In a bi-directional relay channel, two nodes wish to exchange independent messages over a shared wireless half-duplex channel with the help of relays. Recent work has considered information theoretic limits of the bi-directional relay channel with a single relay. In this work we consider bi-directional relaying with multiple relays. We derive achievable rate regions and outer bounds for half-duplex protocols with multiple decode and forward relays and compare these to the same protocols with amplify and forward relays in an additive white Gaussian noise channel. We consider three novel classes…
This paper investigates the impact of the channel state information (CSI) and antenna correlation at the multi-antenna relay on the performance of wireless powered dual-hop amplify-and-forward relaying systems. Depending on the available CSI at the relay, two different scenarios are considered, namely, instantaneous CSI and statistical CSI where the relay has access only to the antenna correlation matrix. Adopting the power-splitting architecture, we present a detailed performance study for both cases. Closed-form analytical expressions are derived for the outage probability and ergodic capaci…
In this paper we study decode-and-forward multi-antenna relay systems that achieve bi-directional communication in two time slots. We investigate different downlink broadcast schemes which employ binary or analog network coding at the relay. We also analyze and compare their performances in terms of diversity order and symbol error probability. It is shown that if exact downlink channel state information is available at the relay, using analog network coding in the form of multi-antenna maximal-ratio transmit beamforming to precode the information vectors at the relay gives the best performanc…
In this letter the performance of multiple relay channels is analyzed for the situation in which multiple antennas are deployed only at the relays. The simple repetition-coded decodeand- forward protocol with two different antenna processing techniques at the relays is investigated. The antenna combining techniques are maximum ratio combining (MRC) for reception and transmit beamforming (TB) for transmission. It is shown that these distributed antenna combining techniques can exploit the full spatial diversity of the relay channels regardless of the number of relays and antennas at each relay,…
This paper considers a fully-connected interference network with a relay in which multiple users equipped with a single antenna want to exchange multiple unicast messages with other users in the network by sharing the relay equipped with multiple antennas. For such a network, the degrees of freedom (DoF) are derived by considering various message exchange scenarios: a multi-user fully-connected Y channel, a two-pair two-way interference channel with the relay, and a two-pair two-way X channel with the relay. Further, considering distributed relays employing a single antenna in the two-way inte…
In this paper, we study the problem of optimal topology design in wireless networks equipped with highly-directional transmission antennas. We use the 1-2-1 network model to characterize the optimal placement of two relays that assist the communication between a source-destination pair. We analytically show that under some conditions on the distance between the source-destination pair, the optimal topology in terms of maximizing the network throughput is to place the relays as close as possible to the source and the destination.
In this paper, we consider joint network and LDPC coding for practically implementing the denosie-and-forward protocol over bi-directional relaying. the closed-form expressions for computing the log-likelihood ratios of the network-coded codewords have been derived for both real and complex multiple-access channels. It is revealed that the equivalent channel observed at the relay is an asymmetrical channel, where the channel input is the XOR form of the two source nodes.
We consider a multi-pair relay channel where multiple sources simultaneously communicate with destinations using a relay. Each source or destination has only a single antenna, while the relay is equipped with a very large antenna array. We investigate the power efficiency of this system when maximum ratio combining/maximal ratio transmission (MRC/MRT) or zero-forcing (ZF) processing is used at the relay. Using a very large array, the transmit power of each source or relay (or both) can be made inversely proportional to the number of relay antennas while maintaining a given quality-of-service. …
Considering a three-node multiple antenna relay system, this paper proposes a two-phase amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying protocol, which enables the autonomous relay to simultaneously harvest wireless power from the source information signal and from an energy signal conveyed by the destination. We first study this energy-flow-assisted (EFA) relaying in a single-input single-output (SISO) relay system and aim at maximizing the rate. By transforming the optimization problem into an equivalent convex form, a global optimum can be found. We then extend the protocol to a multiple antenna relay sy…
This paper considers a multiuser cellular two-way relay network (cTWRN) where multiple users exchange information with a base station (BS) via a relay station (RS). Each user is equipped with a single antenna, while both the BS and the RS are equipped with a very large antenna array. We investigate the performance of the cTWRN with amplify-and-forward (AF) based physical-layer network coding, and derive closed-form expression for the asymptotic spectral efficiency when both the number of antennas at the BS and the RS grow large. It is shown that the noise propagation of the non-regenerative re…
This paper studies the general multi-antenna multiple-relay network. Every two nodes of the network are either connected together through a Rayleigh fading channel or disconnected. We study the ergodic capacity of the network in the high SNR regime. We prove that the traditional amplify-forward relaying achieves the maximum multiplexing gain of the network. Furthermore, we show that the maximum multiplexing gain of the network is equal to the minimum vertex cut-set of the underlying graph of the network, which can be computed in polynomial time in terms of the number of network nodes. Finally,…
In this letter, we propose a joint transmission mode and transmit/receive (Tx/Rx) antenna configuration scheme referred to as X-duplex in the relay network with one source, one amplify-and-forward (AF) relay and one destination. The relay is equipped with two antennas, each of which is capable of reception and transmission. In the proposed scheme, the relay adaptively selects its Tx and Rx antenna, operating in either full-duplex (FD) or half-duplex (HD) mode. The proposed scheme is based on minimizing the symbol error rate (SER) of the relay system. The asymptotic expressions of the cumulativ…
In this paper, link selection is investigated in half-duplex (HD) dual-hop cooperative systems with multiple antennas at the relays. Alternate distributed beamforming (ADB) scheme is revisited for buffer-aided multi-antenna relay systems, in which the relays are divided into two groups, with one group receiving the same information broadcast from the source and the other group transmitting the common messages to the destination via distributed beamforming in each time slot. It is worth noting that the relays used for reception and transmission are determined without the need of instantaneous c…
The performance of a dual-hop MIMO relay network is studied in this paper. The relay is assumed to have access to the statistical channel state information of its preceding and following channels and it is assumed that fading at the antennas of the relay is correlated. The cumulative density function (cdf) of the received SNR at the destination is first studied and closed-form expressions are derived for the asymptotic cases of the fully-correlated and non-correlated scenarios; moreover, the statistical characteristics of the SNR are further studied and an approximate cdf of the SNR is derived…
Distributed space time coding for wireless relay networks when the source, the destination and the relays have multiple antennas have been studied by Jing and Hassibi. In this set-up, the transmit and the receive signals at different antennas of the same relay are processed and designed independently, even though the antennas are colocated. In this paper, a wireless relay network with single antenna at the source and the destination and two antennas at each of the R relays is considered. A new class of distributed space time block codes called Co-ordinate Interleaved Distributed Space-Time Cod…
We study amplified-and-forward (AF)-based two-way relaying (TWR) with multiple source pairs, which are exchanging information through the relay. Each source has single antenna and the relay has multi-antenna. The optimal beamforming matrix structure that achieves maximum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) for TWR with multiple source pairs is derived. We then present two new non-zero-forcing based beamforming schemes for TWR, which take into consideration the tradeoff between preserving the desired signals and suppressing inter-pair interference between different source pairs. Join…
Transmit signal and bandwidth optimization is considered in multiple-antenna relay channels. Assuming all terminals have channel state information, the cut-set capacity upper bound and decode-and-forward rate under full-duplex relaying are evaluated by formulating them as convex optimization problems. For half-duplex relays, bandwidth allocation and transmit signals are optimized jointly. Moreover, achievable rates based on the compress-and-forward transmission strategy are presented using rate-distortion and Wyner-Ziv compression schemes. It is observed that when the relay is close to the sou…
Network coding has the potential to improve the overall throughput of a network by combining different streams of data and forwarding them. In wireless networks, the wireless channel provide an excellent medium for physical layer network coding as signals from different transmitters are combined automatically by the wireless channel. In such scenarios, it would be interesting to investigate protocols and algorithms which can optimally relay information. In this paper, we look at a four-node two-way or bidirectional relay network, and propose a relay protocol which can relay information efficie…
We consider a dense fading multi-user network with multiple active multi-antenna source-destination pair terminals communicating simultaneously through a large common set of $K$ multi-antenna relay terminals in the full spatial multiplexing mode. We use Shannon-theoretic tools to analyze the tradeoff between energy efficiency and spectral efficiency (known as the power- bandwidth tradeoff) in meaningful asymptotic regimes of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and network size. We design linear distributed multi-antenna relay beamforming (LDMRB) schemes that exploit the spatial signature of multi-user…
We consider a wireless relay network with multiple antenna terminals over Rayleigh fading channels, and apply distributed space-time coding (DSTC) in amplify-and-forward (A&F) mode. The A&F scheme is used in a way that each relay transmits a scaled version of the linear combination of the received symbols. It turns out that, combined with power allocation in the relays, A&F DSTC results in an opportunistic relaying scheme, in which only the best relay is selected to retransmit the source's space-time coded signal. Furthermore, assuming the knowledge of source-relay CSI at the source node, we d…
In this paper, a multi-antenna assisted virtual full-duplex (FD) relaying with reliability-aware iterative decoding at destination node is proposed to improve system spectral efficiency and reliability. This scheme enables two half-duplex relay nodes, mimicked as FD relaying, to alternatively serve as transmitter and receiver to relay their decoded data signals regardless the decoding errors, meanwhile, cancel the inter-relay interference with QR-decomposition. Then, by deploying the reliability-aware iterative detection/decoding process, destination node can efficiently mitigate inter-frame i…
In this paper, we consider the transceiver and relay design for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cellular two-way relay channel (cTWRC), where a multi-antenna base station (BS) exchanges information with multiple multi-antenna mobile stations via a multi-antenna relay station (RS). We propose a novel two-way relaying scheme to approach the sum capacity of the MIMO cTWRC.
Previous work on cooperative communications has concentrated primarily on the diversity benefits of such techniques. This paper, instead, considers the multiplexing benefits of cooperative communications. First, a new interpretation on the fundamental tradeoff between the transmission rate and outage probability in multi-antenna relay networks is given. It follows that multiplexing gains can be obtained at any finite SNR, in full-duplex multi-antenna relay networks. Thus relaying can offer not only stronger link reliability, but also higher spectral efficiency. Specifically, the decode-and-for…
In a bi-directional relay channel, two nodes wish to exchange independent messages over a shared wireless half-duplex channel with the help of a relay. In this paper, we derive achievable rate regions for four new half-duplex protocols and compare these to four existing half-duplex protocols and outer bounds. In time, our protocols consist of either two or three phases. In the two phase protocols, both users simultaneously transmit during the first phase and the relay alone transmits during the second phase, while in the three phase protocol the two users sequentially transmit followed by a tr…
In this paper, a multiple-relay network in considered, in which $K$ single-antenna relays assist a single-antenna transmitter to communicate with a single-antenna receiver in a half-duplex mode. A new Amplify and Forward (AF) scheme is proposed for this network and is shown to achieve the optimum diversity-multiplexing trade-off curve.
In a bi-directional relay channel, a pair of nodes wish to exchange independent messages over a shared wireless half-duplex channel with the help of relays. Recent work has mostly considered information theoretic limits of the bi-directional relay channel with two terminal nodes (or end users) and one relay. In this work we consider bi-directional relaying with one base station, multiple terminal nodes and one relay, all of which operate in half-duplex modes. We assume that each terminal node communicates with the base-station in a bi-directional fashion through the relay and do not place any …
Optimal precoding in the relay is investigated to maximize ergodic capacity of a multiple antenna relay channel. The source and the relay nodes are equipped with multiple antennas and the destination with a single antenna. It is assumed that the channel covariance matrices of the relay's receive and transmit channels are available to the relay, and optimal precoding at the relay is investigated. It is shown that the optimal transmission from the relay should be conducted in the direction of the eigenvectors of the transmit-channel covariance matrix. Then, we derive the necessary and sufficient…
This paper studies the setup of a multiple-relay network in which $K$ half-duplex multiple-antenna relays assist in the transmission between a/several multiple-antenna transmitter(s) and a multiple-antenna receiver. Each two nodes are assumed to be either connected through a quasi-static Rayleigh fading channel, or disconnected. We propose a new scheme, which we call \textit{random sequential} (RS), based on the amplify-and-forward relaying. We prove that for general multiple-antenna multiple-relay networks, the proposed scheme achieves the maximum diversity gain. Furthermore, we derive divers…
In this work, we investigate the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) of the multiple-antenna (MIMO) static half-duplex relay channel. A general expression is derived for the DMT upper bound, which can be achieved by a compress-and-forward protocol at the relay, under certain assumptions. The DMT expression is given as the solution of a minimization problem in general, and an explicit expression is found when the relay channel is symmetric in terms of number of antennas, i.e. the source and the destination have n antennas each, and the relay has m antennas. It is observed that the static half…
We design a new secure transmission scheme in the relay wiretap channel where a source communicates with a destination through a decode-and-forward relay in the presence of spatially random-distributed eavesdroppers. For the sake of practicality, we consider a general antenna configuration in which the source, relay, destination, and eavesdroppers are equipped with multiple antennas. In order to confuse the eavesdroppers, we assume that both the source and the relay transmit artificial noise signals in addition to information signals. We first derive a closed-form expression for the transmissi…
We investigate a relay network where a multiantenna source can potentially utilize an unauthenticated (untrusted) relay to augment its direct transmission of a confidential message to the destination. Since the relay is untrusted, it is desirable to protect the confidential data from it while simultaneously making use of it to increase the reliability of the transmission. We present a low-complexity scheme denoted as imbalanced beamforming based on linear beamforming and constellation mapping that ensures perfect physical-layer security even while utilizing the untrusted relay. Furthermore, th…
We investigate a relay network where the source can potentially utilize an untrusted non-regenerative relay to augment its direct transmission of a confidential message to the destination. Since the relay is untrusted, it is desirable to protect the confidential data from it while simultaneously making use of it to increase the reliability of the transmission. We first examine the secrecy outage probability (SOP) of the network assuming a single antenna relay, and calculate the exact SOP for three different schemes: direct transmission without using the relay, conventional non-regenerative rel…
Multi-hop relay channels use multiple relay stages, each with multiple relay nodes, to facilitate communication between a source and destination. Previously, distributed space-time coding was used to maximize diversity gain. Assuming a low-rate feedback link from the destination to each relay stage and the source, this paper proposes end-to-end antenna selection strategies as an alternative to distributed space-time coding. One-way (where only the source has data for destination) and two-way (where the destination also has data for the source) multi-hop relay channels are considered with both …
We study a cooperative network with a buffer-aided multi-antenna source, multiple half-duplex (HD) buffer-aided relays and a single destination. Such a setup could represent a cellular downlink scenario, in which the source can be a more powerful wireless device with a buffer and multiple antennas, while a set of intermediate less powerful devices are used as relays to reach the destination. The main target is to recover the multiplexing loss of the network by having the source and a relay to simultaneously transmit their information to another relay and the destination, respectively. Successi…
In this paper, the symbol error rate (SER) and the bit error rate (BER) of orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBCs) and their achievable capacity over an amplify-and-forward (AF) relay channel with multiple antennas at source and destination and single antenna at relay node are investigated. Considered are receive antenna selection, transmit antenna selection, and joint antenna selection at both the transmitter and the receiver. The exact SERs of OSTBCs for M-PSK and square M-QAM constellations are obtained using the moment generating functions (MGFs). Also, we analyze the achievable capacit…
Cooperation between terminals has been proposed to improve the reliability and throughput of wireless communication. While recent work has shown that relay cooperation provides increased diversity, increased multiplexing gain over that offered by direct link has largely been unexplored. In this work we show that cooperative multiplexing gain can be achieved by using a half duplex relay. We capture relative distances between terminals in the high SNR diversity multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) framework. The DMT performance is then characterized for a network having a single antenna half-duplex relay…
In this work, we present a cloud-aided uplink framework for multi-way multiple-antenna relay systems which facilitates joint linear Maximum Likelihood (ML) symbol detection in the cloud and where users are selected to simultaneously transmit to each other aided by relays. We also investigate relay selection techniques for the proposed cloud-aided uplink framework that uses cloud-based buffers and physical-layer network coding. In particular, we develop a novel multi-way relay selection protocol based on the selection of the best link, denoted as Multi-Way Cloud-Aided Best-User-Link (MWC-Best-U…

A particularly interesting PHY-security technology is cooperative relay due to the fact that it helps to provide distributed diversity and shorten access distance. This article offers a tutorial on various multi-antenna relaying technologies to improve security at physical layer. The state of th…
This paper considers a multi-pair two-way amplify-and-forward relaying system, where multiple pairs of full-duplex users are served via a full-duplex relay with massive antennas, and the relay adopts maximum-ratio combining/maximum-ratio transmission (MRC/MRT) processing. The orthogonal pilot scheme and the least square method are firstly exploited to estimate the channel state information (CSI). When the number of relay antennas is finite, we derive an approximate sum rate expression which is shown to be a good predictor of the ergodic sum rate, especially in large number of antennas. Then th…
In this paper, we present a relay-selection strategy for multi-way cooperative multi-antenna systems that are aided by a central processor node, where a cluster formed by two users is selected to simultaneously transmit to each other with the help of relays. In particular, we present a novel multi-way relay selection strategy based on the selection of the best link, exploiting the use of buffers and physical-layer network coding, that is called Multi-Way Buffer-Aided Max-Link (MW-Max-Link). We compare the proposed MW-Max-Link to existing techniques in terms of bit error rate, pairwise error pr…
In this chapter, the authors present the performance of multi-antenna selective combining decode-and-forward (SC-DF) relay networks over independent and identically distributed (i.i.d) Nakagami-m fading channels. The outage probability, moment generation function, symbol error probability and average channel capacity are derived in closed-form using the Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (SNR) statistical characteristics. After that, the authors formulate the outage probability problem, optimize it with an approximated problem, and then solve it analytically. Finally, for comparison with analytical formula…
In this paper, we design interference free transceivers for multi-user two-way relay systems, where a multi-antenna base station (BS) simultaneously exchanges information with multiple single-antenna users via a multi-antenna amplify-and-forward relay station (RS). To offer a performance benchmark and provide useful insight into the transceiver structure, we employ alternating optimization to find optimal transceivers at the BS and RS that maximizes the bidirectional sum rate. We then propose a low complexity scheme, where the BS transceiver is the zero-forcing precoder and detector, and the R…
The simultaneous wireless transfer of information and power with the help of a relay equipped with multiple antennas is considered in this letter, where a harvest-and-forward strategy is proposed. In particular, the relay harvests energy and obtains information from the source with the radio-frequent signals by jointly using the antenna selection (AS) and power splitting (PS) techniques, and then the processed information is amplified and forwarded to the destination relying on the harvested energy. This letter jointly optimizes AS and PS to maximize the achievable rate for the proposed strate…
Multi-hop relay channels use multiple relay stages, each with multiple relay nodes, to facilitate communication between a source and destination. Previously, distributed space-time codes were proposed to maximize the achievable diversity-multiplexing tradeoff, however, they fail to achieve all the points of the optimal diversity-multiplexing tradeoff. In the presence of a low-rate feedback link from the destination to each relay stage and the source, this paper proposes an end-to-end antenna selection (EEAS) strategy as an alternative to distributed space-time codes. The EEAS strategy uses a s…
Consider a simple two-way relaying channel where two single-antenna sources exchange information via a multiple-antenna relay. To such a scenario, all the existing works which can achieve full diversity order are based on the antenna/relay selection, where the difficulty to design the beamforming lies in the fact that a single beamformer needs to serve two destinations. In this paper, we propose a new full-diversity beamforming scheme which ensures that the relay signals are coherently combined at both destinations. Both analytical and numerical results are provided to demonstrate that this pr…
Capacity bounds are studied for the multiple-antenna complex Gaussian relay channel with t1 transmitting antennas at the sender, r2 receiving and t2 transmitting antennas at the relay, and r3 receiving antennas at the receiver. It is shown that the partial decode-forward coding scheme achieves within min(t1,r2) bits from the cutset bound and at least one half of the cutset bound, establishing a good approximate expression of the capacity. A similar additive gap of min(t1 + t2, r3) + r2 bits is shown to be achieved by the compress-forward coding scheme.
We consider a general multiple antenna network with multiple sources, multiple destinations and multiple relays in terms of the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT). We examine several subcases of this most general problem taking into account the processing capability of the relays (half-duplex or full-duplex), and the network geometry (clustered or non-clustered). We first study the multiple antenna relay channel with a full-duplex relay to understand the effect of increased degrees of freedom in the direct link. We find DMT upper bounds and investigate the achievable performance of decode-a…
This paper studies the Degrees of Freedom (DoF) of the two-user multi-antenna Gaussian interference channel with an {\em instantaneous relay}, or relay without delay, where the relay transmitted signal in channel use $t$ can depend on all received signals up to and including that at channel use $t$. It is assumed that the two transmitters and the two receivers have $M$ antennas, while the relay receives through $N$ antennas and transmits through $L$ antennas. An achievable DoF region is derived, for all possible values of $(M,N,L)$, based on a memoryless linear transmission strategy at the rel…
In this paper, we show that the optimal receive antenna subset selection problem for maximizing the mutual information in a point-to-point MIMO system is sub-modular. Consequently, a greedy step-wise optimization approach, where at each step an antenna that maximizes the incremental gain is added to the existing antenna subset, is guaranteed to be within a (1 - 1/e) fraction of the global optimal value. For a single antenna equipped source and destination with multiple relays, we show that the relay antenna selection problem to maximize the mutual information is modular, when complete channel …
We propose a greedy minimum mean squared error (MMSE)-based antenna selection algorithm for amplify-and-forward (AF) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems. Assuming equal-power allocation across the multi-stream data, we derive a closed form expression for the mean squared error (MSE) resulted from adding each additional antenna pair. Based on this result, we iteratively select the antenna-pairs at the relay nodes to minimize the MSE. Simulation results show that our algorithm greatly outperforms the existing schemes.
In this work, we present a switched relaying framework for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems where a source node may transmit directly to a destination node or aided by relays. We also investigate relay selection techniques for the proposed switched relaying framework, whose relays are equipped with buffers. In particular, we develop a novel relay selection protocol based on switching and the selection of the best link, denoted as Switched Max-Link. We then propose the Maximum Minimum Distance (MMD) relay selection criterion for MIMO systems, which is based on the optimal Max…
Physical-layer security for wireless networks has become an effective approach and recently drawn significant attention in the literature. In this work, we examine relay selection criteria with arbitrary knowledge of the channels of the users and the eavesdroppers. We present alternative optimization criteria based on the signal-to-interference and the secrecy rate criteria that can be used fo…
We consider the analysis and design of space-time trellis codes (STTCs) for a cooperative relay channel operating in amplify-and-forward (AF) mode assuming the source and destination nodes are equipped with multiple antennas but the relay node has single antenna. We derive a pairwise error probability (PEP) expression for the performance of STTCs in this type of channels. A simple upper-bound on PEP is then derived and is maximized to find the optimum STTCs. We show that the designed STTCs based on the derived criterion achieve full diversity in the AF relay channels especially at high signal-…
A multiple input multiple output (MIMO) two-way relay channel is considered, where two sources want to exchange messages with each other using multiple relay nodes, and both the sources and relay nodes are equipped with multiple antennas. Both the sources are assumed to have equal number of antennas and have perfect channel state information (CSI) for all the channels of the MIMO two-way relay channel, whereas, each relay node is either assumed to have CSI for its transmit and receive channel (the coherent case) or no CSI for any of the channels (the non-coherent case). The main results in thi…
We consider the opportunistic multiuser diversity in the multiuser two-way amplify-and-forward (AF) relay channel. The relay, equipped with multiple antennas and a simple zero-forcing beam-forming scheme, selects a set of two way relaying user pairs to enhance the degree of freedom (DoF) and consequently the sum throughput of the system. The proposed channel aligned pair scheduling (CAPS) algorithm reduces the inter-pair interference and keeps the signal to interference plus noise power ratio (SINR) of user pairs relatively interference free in average sense when the number of user pairs becom…
