Network coding has the potential to improve the overall throughput of a network by combining different streams of data and forwarding them. In wireless networks, the wireless channel provide an excellent medium for physical layer network coding as signals from different transmitters are combined automatically by the wireless channel. In such scenarios, it would be interesting to investigate protocols and algorithms which can optimally relay information. In this paper, we look at a four-node two-way or bidirectional relay network, and propose a relay protocol which can relay information efficiently in this network.
In this paper we consider a simple cooperative network consisting of a source, a destination and a cluster of decode-and-forward half-duplex relays. At each time-slot, the source and (possibly) one of the relays transmit a packet to another relay and the destination, respectively, resulting in inter-relay interference (IRI). In this work, with the aid of buffers at the relays, we mitigate the detrimental effect of IRI through interference cancellation. More specifically, we propose the min-power scheme that minimizes the total energy expenditure per time slot under an IRI cancellation scheme. …
A novel channel representation for a two-hop decentralized wireless relay network (DWRN) is proposed, where the relays operate in a completely distributive fashion. The modeling paradigm applies an analogous approach to the description method for a double-directional multipath propagation channel, and takes into account the finite system spatial resolution and the extended relay listening/transmitting time. Specifically, the double-directional information azimuth spectrum (IAS) is formulated to provide a compact representation of information flows in a DWRN. The proposed channel representation…
In a bi-directional relay channel, two nodes wish to exchange independent messages over a shared wireless half-duplex channel with the help of relays. Recent work has considered information theoretic limits of the bi-directional relay channel with a single relay. In this work we consider bi-directional relaying with multiple relays. We derive achievable rate regions and outer bounds for half-duplex protocols with multiple decode and forward relays and compare these to the same protocols with amplify and forward relays in an additive white Gaussian noise channel. We consider three novel classes…
In this work, we study interference cancellation techniques and a multi-relay selection algorithm based on greedy methods for the uplink of cooperative direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems. We first devise low-cost list-based successive interference cancellation (GL-SIC) and parallel interference cancellation (GL-PIC) algorithms with RAKE receivers as the front-end that can approach the maximum likelihood detector performance and be used at both the relays and the destination of cooperative systems. Unlike prior art, the proposed GL-SIC and GL-PIC algorithms exploit …
In this paper, we study the problem of optimal topology design in wireless networks equipped with highly-directional transmission antennas. We use the 1-2-1 network model to characterize the optimal placement of two relays that assist the communication between a source-destination pair. We analytically show that under some conditions on the distance between the source-destination pair, the optimal topology in terms of maximizing the network throughput is to place the relays as close as possible to the source and the destination.
In this paper, we consider joint network and LDPC coding for practically implementing the denosie-and-forward protocol over bi-directional relaying. the closed-form expressions for computing the log-likelihood ratios of the network-coded codewords have been derived for both real and complex multiple-access channels. It is revealed that the equivalent channel observed at the relay is an asymmetrical channel, where the channel input is the XOR form of the two source nodes.
In this paper we study decode-and-forward multi-antenna relay systems that achieve bi-directional communication in two time slots. We investigate different downlink broadcast schemes which employ binary or analog network coding at the relay. We also analyze and compare their performances in terms of diversity order and symbol error probability. It is shown that if exact downlink channel state information is available at the relay, using analog network coding in the form of multi-antenna maximal-ratio transmit beamforming to precode the information vectors at the relay gives the best performanc…
Relay-based cooperative communication has become a research focus in recent years because it can achieve diversity gain in wireless networks. In existing works, network coding and two-path relay are adopted to deal with the increase of network size and the half-duplex nature of relay, respectively. To further improve bandwidth efficiency, we propose a novel cooperative transmission scheme which combines network coding and two-path relay together in a multi-source system. Due to the utilization of two-path relay, our proposed scheme achieves full-rate transmission. Adopting complex field networ…
In a bi-directional relay channel, two nodes wish to exchange independent messages over a shared wireless half-duplex channel with the help of a relay. In this paper, we derive achievable rate regions for four new half-duplex protocols and compare these to four existing half-duplex protocols and outer bounds. In time, our protocols consist of either two or three phases. In the two phase protocols, both users simultaneously transmit during the first phase and the relay alone transmits during the second phase, while in the three phase protocol the two users sequentially transmit followed by a tr…
In a bi-directional relay channel, a pair of nodes wish to exchange independent messages over a shared wireless half-duplex channel with the help of relays. Recent work has mostly considered information theoretic limits of the bi-directional relay channel with two terminal nodes (or end users) and one relay. In this work we consider bi-directional relaying with one base station, multiple terminal nodes and one relay, all of which operate in half-duplex modes. We assume that each terminal node communicates with the base-station in a bi-directional fashion through the relay and do not place any …
In this paper, we consider a two-way or bidirectional communications system with a relay equipped with multiple antennas. We show that when the downlink channel state information is not known at the relay, the benefit of having additional antennas at the relay can only be obtained by using decode and forward (DF) but not amplify and forward (AF). The gain becomes significant when we employ transmit diversity together with wireless network coding. We also demonstrate how the performance of such system can be improved by performing antenna selection at the relay. Our results show that if downlin…
We study multi-user transmission and detection schemes for a multi-access relay network (MARN) with linear constraints at all nodes. In a $(J, J_a, R_a, M)$ MARN, $J$ sources, each equipped with $J_a$ antennas, communicate to one $M$-antenna destination through one $R_a$-antenna relay. A new protocol called IC-Relay-TDMA is proposed which takes two phases. During the first phase, symbols of different sources are transmitted concurrently to the relay. At the relay, interference cancellation (IC) techniques, previously proposed for systems with direct transmission, are applied to decouple the in…
In this paper we study the capacity region of the multi-pair bidirectional (or two-way) wireless relay network, in which a relay node facilitates the communication between multiple pairs of users. This network is a generalization of the well known bidirectional relay channel, where we have only one pair of users. We examine this problem in the context of the deterministic channel interaction model, which eliminates the channel noise and allows us to focus on the interaction between signals. We characterize the capacity region of this network when the relay is operating at either full-duplex mo…
In this paper, we first propose interference alignment (IA) scheme for uplink transmission of multiple-input-mulitple-output (MIMO) cellular network with a help of relay which operates in halfduplex mode. The proposed scheme only requires global channel state information (CSI) knowledge at relay and no transmitter beamforming and time extension is required at user equipment (UE), which differs from the conventional IA schemes for cellular network. We derive the feasibility condition of the proposed scheme for the general network configuration and analyze the degrees-of-freedom (DoF) performanc…
In this paper, we propose an analog network coding scheme with differential modulation (ANC-DM) using amplify-and-forward protocol for bidirectional relay networks when neither the source nodes nor the relay knows the channel state information (CSI). The performance of the proposed ANC-DM scheme is analyzed and a simple asymptotic bit error rate (BER) expression is derived. The analytical results are verified through simulations. It is shown that the BER performance of the proposed differential scheme is about 3 dB away from that of the coherent detection scheme. To improve the system performa…
We consider the problem of two transmitters wishing to exchange information through a relay in the middle. The channels between the transmitters and the relay are assumed to be synchronized, average power constrained additive white Gaussian noise channels with a real input with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of snr. An upper bound on the capacity is 1/2 log(1+ snr) bits per transmitter per use of the medium-access phase and broadcast phase of the bi-directional relay channel. We show that using lattice codes and lattice decoding, we can obtain a rate of 1/2 log(0.5 + snr) bits per transmitter, wh…
This paper studies a full-duplex filter-and-forward (FD-FF) relay system in frequency-selective channels. Conventionally, the loop-back signal at the FD relay is treated as harmful self-interference and needs to be significantly suppressed via both analog- and digital-domain cancellation. However, the performance of the conventional self-interference cancellation approach is fundamentally limited due to the quantization error induced by the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with limited dynamic range. In this paper, we consider an analog filter-and-forward design to help avoid the quantization…
In practical asynchronous bi-directional relaying, symbols transmitted by two sources cannot arrive at the relay with perfect frame and symbol alignments and the asynchronous multiple-access channel (MAC) should be seriously considered. Recently, Lu et al. proposed a Tanner-graph representation of the symbol-asynchronous MAC with rectangular-pulse shaping and further developed the message-passing algorithm for optimal decoding of the symbol-asynchronous physical-layer network coding. In this paper, we present a general channel model for the asynchronous MAC with arbitrary pulse-shaping. Then, …
We consider a communication system where two transmitters wish to exchange information through a half-duplex relay in the middle. The channels between the transmitters and the relay have asymmetric channel gains. More specifically, the channels are assumed to be synchronized with complex inputs and complex fading coefficients with an average power constraint on the inputs to the channels. The noise at the receivers have the same power spectral density and are assumed to be white and Gaussian. We restrict our attention to transmission schemes where information from the two nodes are simultaneou…
Secure wireless information and power transfer based on directional modulation is conceived for amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying networks. Explicitly, we first formulate a secrecy rate maximization (SRM) problem, which can be decomposed into a twin-level optimization problem and solved by a one-dimensional (1D) search and semidefinite relaxation (SDR) technique. Then in order to reduce the search complexity, we formulate an optimization problem based on maximizing the signal-to-leakage-AN-noise-ratio (Max-SLANR) criterion, and transform it into a SDR problem. Additionally, the relaxation is p…
In this paper, iterative differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) demodulation and channel decoding scheme is investigated for the Joint Channel decoding and physical layer Network Coding (JCNC) approach in two-way relaying systems. The Bahl, Cocke, Jelinek, and Raviv (BCJR) algorithm for both coherent and noncoherent detection is derived for soft-in soft-out decoding of DPSK signalling over the two-user multiple-access channel with Rayleigh fading. Then, we propose a pragmatic approach with the JCNC scheme for iteratively exploiting the extrinsic information of the outer code. With coherent det…
In coded bi-directional cooperation, two nodes wish to exchange messages over a shared half-duplex channel with the help of a relay. In this paper, we derive performance bounds for this problem for each of three protocols. The first protocol is a two phase protocol were both users simultaneously transmit during the first phase and the relay alone transmits during the second. In this protocol, our bounds are tight and a multiple-access channel transmission from the two users to the relay followed by a coded broadcast-type transmission from the relay to the users achieves all points in the two-p…
In this paper, we propose a selection region based multihop routing protocol with directional antennas for wireless mobile ad hoc networks, where the selection region is defined by two parameters: a reference distance and the beamwidth of the directional antenna. At each hop, we choose the nearest node to the transmitter within the selection region as the next hop relay. By maximizing the expected density of progress, we present an upper bound for the optimum reference distance and derive the relationship between the optimum reference distance and the optimum transmission probability. Compared…
Successive relaying can improve the transmission rate by allowing the source and relays to transmit messages simultaneously, but it may cause severe inter-relay interference (IRI). IRI cancellation schemes have been proposed to mitigate IRI. However, interference cancellation methods have a high risk of error propagation, resulting in a severe transmission rate loss in finite blocklength regimes. Thus, jointly decoding for successive relaying with finite-blocklength coding (FBC) remains a challenge. In this paper, we present an optimized channel-aware ordered successive relaying protocol with …
We consider a cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network in which a full-duplex (FD) multi-antenna relay assists transmission from a base station (BS) to a set of far users with poor channel conditions, while at the same time the BS transmits to a set of near users with strong channel conditions. We assume imperfect self-interference (SI) cancellation at the FD relay and imperfect inter-user interference cancellation at the near users. In order to cancel the SI at the relay a zero-forcing based beamforming scheme is used and the corresponding outage probability analysis of two u…
This paper discusses transmission strategies for dealing with the problem of self-interference in multi-hop wireless networks in which the nodes communicate in a full- duplex mode. An information theoretic study of the simplest such multi-hop network: the two-hop source-relay-destination network, leads to a novel transmission strategy called structured self-interference cancellation (or just "structured cancellation" for short). In the structured cancellation strategy the source restrains from transmitting on certain signal levels, and the relay structures its transmit signal such that it can …
Relay cooperation and integrated microwave and millimeter-wave (mm-wave) dual-band communication are likely to play key roles in 5G. In this paper, we study a two-user uplink scenario in such dual-bands, modeled as a multiple-access relay channel (MARC), where two sources communicate to a destination assisted by a relay. However, unlike the microwave band, transmitters in the mm-wave band must employ highly directional antenna arrays to combat the ill effects of severe path-loss and small wavelength. The resulting mm-wave links are point-to-point and highly directional, and are thus used to co…
We study a multi-source Gaussian relay network consisting of $K$ source--destination pairs having $K$ unicast sessions. We assume $M$ layers of relays between the sources and the destinations. We find achievable degrees of freedom of the network. Our schemes are based on interference alignment at the transmitters and symbol extension and opportunistic interference cancellation at the relays. For $K$-$L$-$K$ networks, i.e., 2-hop network with $L$ relays, we show $\min\{K,K/2+L/(2(K-1))\}$ degrees of freedom are achievable. For $K$-hop networks with $K$ relays in each layer, we show the full $K$…
In this paper, we study the two-way relay channel with energy harvesting nodes. In particular, we find transmission policies that maximize the sum-throughput for two-way relay channels when the relay does not employ a data buffer. The relay can perform decode-and-forward, compress-and-forward, compute-and-forward or amplify-and-forward relaying. Furthermore, we consider throughput improvement by dynamically choosing relaying strategies, resulting in hybrid relaying strategies. We show that an iterative generalized directional water-filling algorithm solves the offline throughput maximization p…
This paper investigates interference-cancellation schemes at the receiver, in which the original data of the interference is known a priori. Such a priori knowledge is common in wireless relay networks. For example, a transmitting relay could be relaying data that was previously transmitted by a node, in which case the interference received by the node now is actually self information. Besides the case of self information, the node could also have overheard or received the interference data in a prior transmission by another node. Directly removing the known interference requires accurate esti…
In this letter, we consider single-cell, single-user systems wherein uplink and downlink user equipment communicate with a full-duplex relay. Due to the near-far problem, the self-interference (SI) can be 100-1000x the received signal power. In this context, we consider the adaptive Least Mean Squares (LMS) algorithm to estimate the SI channel and then subtract the SI from the desired received signal before the analog-to-digital converter (ADC). We measure the robustness of this technique in terms of bit error rate (BER) and spectral efficiency.
In this paper, we investigate the joint design of channel and network coding in bi-directional relaying systems and propose a combined low complexity physical network coding and LDPC decoding scheme. For the same LDPC codes employed at both source nodes, we show that the relay can decodes the network coded codewords from the superimposed signal received from the BPSK-modulated multiple-access channel. Simulation results shown that this novel joint physical network coding and LDPC decoding method outperforms the existing MMSE network coding and LDPC decoding method over AWGN and complex MAC cha…
In this paper, we investigate opportunistic relay and jammer cooperation schemes in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) buffer-aided relay networks. The network consists of one source, an arbitrary number of relay nodes, legitimate users and eavesdroppers, with the constraints of physical layer security. We propose an algorithm to select a set of relay nodes to enhance the legitimate users' transmission and another set of relay nodes to perform jamming of the eavesdroppers. With Inter-Relay interference (IRI) taken into account, interference cancellation can be implemented to assist the tran…
In this paper, a two-relay full-duplex asynchronous cooperative network with the amplify-and-forward (AF) protocol is considered. We propose two distributed space-time coding schemes for the cases with and without cross-talks, respectively. In the first case, each relay can receive the signal sent by the other through the cross-talk link. We first study the feasibility of cross-talk cancellation in this network and show that the cross-talk interference cannot be removed well. For this reason, we design space-time codes by utilizing the cross-talk signals instead of removing them. In the other …
A linear mesh network is considered in which a single user per cell communicates to a local base station via a dedicated relay (two-hop communication). Exploiting the possibly relevant inter-cell channel gains, rate splitting with successive cancellation in both hops is investigated as a promising solution to improve the rate of basic single-rate communications. Then, an alternative solution is proposed that attempts to improve the performance of the second hop (from the relays to base stations) by cooperative transmission among the relay stations. The cooperative scheme leverages the common i…
Short message noisy network coding with rate splitting (SNNC-RS) encoding strategy is presented. It has been shown by Hou and Kramer that mixed cooperative strategies in which relays in favorable positions perform decode-and-forward (DF) and the rest of the relays perform short message noisy network coding (SNNC) can outperform noisy network coding (NNC). Our proposed strategy further improves the rate performance of such mixed SNNC-DF cooperative strategy. In the proposed scheme, superposition coding is incorporated into the SNNC encoding in order to facilitate partial interference cancellati…
In this paper, we propose a relay selection amplify-and-forward (RS-AF) protocol in general bi-directional relay networks with two sources and $N$ relays. In the proposed scheme, the two sources first transmit to all the relays simultaneously, and then a single relay with a minimum sum symbol error rate (SER) will be selected to broadcast the received signals back to both sources. To facilitate the selection process, we propose a simple sub-optimal Min-Max criterion for relay selection, where a single relay which minimizes the maximum SER of two source nodes will be selected. Simulation result…
The paper treats a multiuser relay scenario where multiple user equipments (UEs) have a two-way communication with a common Base Station (BS) in the presence of a buffer-equipped Relay Station (RS). Each of the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) transmission can take place over a direct or over a relayed path. Traditionally, the UL and the DL path of a given two-way link are coupled, that is, either both are direct links or both are relayed links. By removing the restriction for coupling, one opens the design space for a decoupled two-way links. Following this, we devise two protocols: orthogonal d…
In-band full-duplex transmission allows a relay station to theoretically double its spectral efficiency by simultaneously receiving and transmitting in the same frequency band, when compared to the traditional half-duplex or out-of-band full-duplex counterpart. Consequently, the induced self-interference suffered by the relay may reach considerable power levels, which decreases the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) in a decode-and-forward (DF) relay, leading to a degradation of the relay performance. This paper presents a technique to cope with the problem of self-interference in …
In this work, we consider a partially cooperative relay broadcast channel (PC-RBC) controlled by random parameters. We provide rate regions for two different situations: 1) when side information (SI) S^n on the random parameters is non-causally known at both the source and the relay and, 2) when side information S^n is non-causally known at the source only. These achievable regions are derived for the general discrete memoryless case first and then extended to the case when the channel is degraded Gaussian and the SI is additive i.i.d. Gaussian. In this case, the source uses generalized dirty …
In this paper, we consider a general bi-directional relay network with two sources and N relays when neither the source nodes nor the relays know the channel state information (CSI). A joint relay selection and analog network coding using differential modulation (RS-ANC-DM) is proposed. In the proposed scheme, the two sources employ differential modulations and transmit the differential modulated symbols to all relays at the same time. The signals received at the relay is a superposition of two transmitted symbols, which we call the analog network coded symbols. Then a single relay which has m…
A symmetric butterfly network (BFN) with a full-duplex relay operating in a bi-directional fashion for feedback is considered. This network is relevant for a variety of wireless networks, including cellular systems dealing with cell-edge users. Upper bounds on the capacity region of the general memoryless BFN with feedback are derived based on cut-set and cooperation arguments and then specialized to the linear deterministic BFN with really-source feedback. It is shown that the upper bounds are achievable using combinations of the compute-forward strategy and the classical decode-and-forward s…
In this paper, we derive the capacity of the deterministic relay networks with relay messages. We consider a network which consists of five nodes, four of which can only communicate via the fifth one. However, the fifth node is not merely a relay as it may exchange private messages with the other network nodes. First, we develop an upper bound on the capacity region based on the notion of a single sided genie. In the course of the achievability proof, we also derive the deterministic capacity of a 4-user relay network (without private messages at the relay). The capacity achieving schemes use …
A full-duplex wireless network with three users that want to establish full message-exchange via a relay is considered. Thus, the network known as the Y-channel has a total of 6 messages, 2 outgoing and 2 incoming at each user. The users are not physically connected, and thus the relay is essential for their communication. The linear-shift deterministic Y-channel is considered first, its capacity region is characterized and shown not to be given by the cut-set bounds. The capacity achieving scheme has three different components (strategies): a bi-directional, a cyclic, and a uni-directional st…
We study the degrees of freedom (DOF) of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) two-way X relay channel, where there are two groups of source nodes and one relay node, each equipped with multiple antennas, and each of the two source nodes in one group exchanges independent messages with the two source nodes in the other group via the relay node. It is assumed that every source node is equipped with M antennas while the relay is equipped with N antennas. We first show that the upper bound on the total DOF for this network is 2min{2M,N} and then focus on the case of N \leq 2M so that the DOF is…
This paper develops efficient Compute-and-forward (CMF) schemes in multi-user multi-relay networks. To solve the rank failure problem in CMF setups and to achieve full diversity of the network, we introduce two novel CMF methods, namely, extended CMF and successive CMF. The former, having low complexity, is based on recovering multiple equations at relays. The latter utilizes successive interference cancellation (SIC) to enhance the system performance compared to the state-of-the-art schemes. Both methods can be utilized in a network with different number of users, relays, and relay antennas, …
This paper considers a fully-connected interference network with a relay in which multiple users equipped with a single antenna want to exchange multiple unicast messages with other users in the network by sharing the relay equipped with multiple antennas. For such a network, the degrees of freedom (DoF) are derived by considering various message exchange scenarios: a multi-user fully-connected Y channel, a two-pair two-way interference channel with the relay, and a two-pair two-way X channel with the relay. Further, considering distributed relays employing a single antenna in the two-way inte…
In this paper, we consider a dual-hop Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) relay wireless network, in which a source-destination pair both equipped with multiple antennas communicates through a large number of half-duplex amplify-and-forward (AF) relay terminals. Two novel linear beamforming schemes based on the matched filter (MF) and regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding techniques are proposed for the MIMO relay system. We focus on the linear process at the relay nodes and design the new relay beamformers by utilizing the channel state information (CSI) of both backward channel and forw…
In this paper, energy efficiency of relay-assisted millimeter wave (mmWave) cellular networks with Poisson Point Process (PPP) distributed base stations (BSs) and relay stations (RSs) is analyzed using tools from stochastic geometry. The distinguishing features of mmWave communications such as directional beamforming and having different path loss laws for line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) links are incorporated into the energy efficiency analysis. Following the description of the system model for mmWave cellular networks, coverage probabilities are computed for each link. Subse…
This paper analyzes the performance of maximum-ratio transmission (MRT)/maximum-ratio combining (MRC) scheme in a dual-hop non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) full-duplex (FD) relay networks in the presence of residual hardware impairments (RHIs). The effects of channel estimation errors (CEEs) and imperfect successive interference cancellation are also considered for a realistic performance analysis. In the network, the base station and multiple users utilize MRT and MRC, respectively, while a dedicated relay consisting of two antennas, one for receiving and the other for broadcasting, oper…
We propose a practical network code for the wireless two-way relay channel where all nodes communicate in full duplex (FD) mode. The physical layer network coding (PNC) operation is applied with the FD operating nodes, reducing the transmission time to a single time slot, hence doubling the spectral efficiency when compared to classical PNC systems. In our system model, binary phase shift keying modulated signals are transmitted over Rayleigh fading channels. We derive the theoretical error rates at relay and end nodes according to the maximum likelihood detection rule, in case of non-ideal se…
We focus on a scenario where two wireless source nodes wish to exchange confidential information via an RF energy harvesting untrusted two-way relay. Despite its cooperation in forwarding the information, the relay is considered untrusted out of the concern that it might attempt to decode the confidential information that is being relayed. To discourage the eavesdropping intention of the relay, we use a friendly jammer. Under the total power constraint, to maximize the sum-secrecy rate, we allocate the power among the sources and the jammer optimally and calculate the optimal power splitting r…
This paper considers transmission schemes in multi-access relay networks (MARNs) where $J$ single-antenna sources send independent information to one $N$-antenna destination through one $M$-antenna relay. For complexity considerations, we propose a linear framework, where the relay linearly transforms its received signals to generate the forwarded signals without decoding and the destination uses its multi-antennas to fully decouple signals from different sources before decoding, by which the decoding complexity is linear in the number of sources. To achieve a high symbol rate, we first propos…
In OFDM relay networks with IQ imbalances and full-duplex relay station (RS), how to optimize pilot pattern and power allocation using the criterion of minimizing the sum of mean square errors (Sum-MSE) for the frequency-domain least-squares channel estimator has a heavy impact on self-interference cancellation. Firstly, the design problem of pilot pattern is casted as a convex optimization. From the KKT conditions, the optimal analytical expression is derived given the fixed source power and RS power. Subsequently, an optimal power allocation (OPA) strategy is proposed and presented to furthe…
In this paper we present a multi-user cooperative protocol for wireless networks. Two sources transmit simultaneously their information blocks and relays employ opportunistically successive interference cancellation (SIC) in an effort to decode them. An adaptive decode/amplify-and-forward scheme is applied at the relays to the decoded blocks or their sufficient statistic if decoding fails. The main feature of the protocol is that SIC is exploited in a network since more opportunities arise for each block to be decoded as the number of used relays NRU is increased. This feature leads to benefit…
This paper considers an interference network composed of K half-duplex single-antenna pairs of users who wish to establish bi-directional communication with the aid of a multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) half-duplex relay node. This channel is referred to as the "MIMO Wireless Switch" since, for the sake of simplicity, our model assumes no direct link between the two end nodes of each pair implying that all communication must go through the relay node (i.e., the MIMO switch). Assuming a delay-limited scenario, the fundamental limits in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime is analyzed usin…
Millimeter wave (mmWave) communications systems are promising candidate to support extremely high data rate services in future wireless networks. MmWave communications exhibit high penetration loss (blockage) and require directional transmissions to compensate for severe channel attenuations and for high noise powers. When blockage occurs, there are at least two simple prominent options: 1) switching to the conventional microwave frequencies (fallback option) and 2) using an alternative non-blocked path (relay option). However, currently it is not clear under which conditions and network param…
A restricted two-way communication problem in a small fully-connected network is investigated. The network consists of three nodes, all having access to a common channel with half-duplex constraint. Two nodes want to establish a dialog while the third node can assist in the bi-directional transmission process. All nodes have agreed on a transmission protocol a priori and the problem is restricted to the dialog encoders not being allowed to establish a cooperation by the use of previous receive signals. The channel is referred to as the restricted half-duplex two-way relay channel. Here the cha…
This paper investigates power control and relay selection in Full Duplex Cognitive Relay Networks (FDCRNs), where the secondary-user (SU) relays can simultaneously receive data from the SU source and forward them to the SU destination. We study both non-coherent and coherent scenarios. In the non-coherent case, the SU relay forwards the signal from the SU source without regulating the phase; while in the coherent scenario, the SU relay regulates the phase when forwarding the signal to minimize the interference at the primary-user (PU) receiver. We consider the problem of maximizing the transmi…
