We introduce an extension, indexed by a partially ordered set P and cardinal numbers k,l, denoted by (k,l)-->P, of the classical relation (k,n,l)--> r in infinite combinatorics. By definition, (k,n,l)--> r holds, if every map from the n-element subsets of k to the subsets of k with less than l elements has a r-element free set. For example, Kuratowski's Free Set Theorem states that (k,n,l)-->n+1 holds iff k is larger than or equal to the n-th cardinal successor l^{+n} of the infinite cardinal k. By using the (k,l)-->P framework, we present a self-contained proof of the first author's result that (l^{+n},n,l)-->n+2, for each infinite cardinal l and each positive integer n, which solves a problem stated in the 1985 monograph of Erdös, Hajnal, Mate, and Rado. Furthermore, by using an order-dimension estimate established in 1971 by Hajnal and Spencer, we prove the relation (l^{+(n-1)},r,l)-->2^m, where m is the largest integer below (1/2)(1-2^{-r})^{-n/r}, for every infinite cardinal l and all positive integers n and r with r larger than 1 but smaller than n. For example, (\aleph_{210},4,\aleph_0)-->32,768. Other order-dimension estimates yield relations such as (\aleph_{109},4,\aleph_0)--> 257 (using an estimate by Füredi and Kahn) and (\aleph_7,4,\aleph_0)-->10 (using an exact estimate by Dushnik).
The combinatorial Ricci curvature of Forman, which is defined at the edges of a CW complex, and which makes use of only the face relations of the cells in the complex, does not satisfy an analog of the Gauss-Bonnet Theorem, and does not behave analogously to smooth surfaces with respect to negative curvature. We extend this curvature to vertices and faces in such a way that the problems with combinatorial Ricci curvature are mostly resolved. The discussion is stated in terms of ranked posets.
We develop a tighter implementation of basic PL topology, which keeps track of some combinatorial structure beyond PL homeomorphism type. With this technique we clarify some aspects of PL transversality and give combinatorial proofs of a number of known results. New results include a combinatorial characterization of collapsible polyhedra in terms of constructible posets (generalizing face posets of constructible simplicial complexes in the sense of Hochster). The relevant constructible posets are also characterized in terms of Reading's zipping of posets, which is a variation of edge contract…
A hereditary property of combinatorial structures is a collection of structures (e.g. graphs, posets) which is closed under isomorphism, closed under taking induced substructures (e.g. induced subgraphs), and contains arbitrarily large structures. Given a property P, we write P_n for the collection of distinct (i.e., non-isomorphic) structures in a property P with n vertices, and call the function n -> |P_n| the speed (or unlabelled speed) of P. Also, we write P^n for the collection of distinct labelled structures in P with vertices labelled 1,...,n, and call the function n -> |P^n| the labell…
A barcode is a finite multiset of intervals on the real line, $B = \{ (b_i, d_i)\}_{i=1}^n$. Barcodes are important objects in topological data analysis, where they serve as summaries of the persistent homology groups of a filtration. The combinatorial properties of barcodes have also been studied, mainly in the context of interval orders and interval graphs. In this paper, we define a new family of maps from the space of barcodes with $n$ bars to the permutation sets of various multisets, known as multipermutations. These multipermutations provide new combinatorial invariants on the space of …
In 1986 Stanley associated to a poset the order polytope. The close interplay between its combinatorial and geometric properties makes the order polytope an object of tremendous interest. Double posets were introduced in 2011 by Malvenuto and Reutenauer as a generalization of Stanleys labelled posets. A double poset is a finite set equipped with two partial orders. To a double poset Chappell, Friedl and Sanyal (2017) associated the double order polytope. They determined the combinatorial structure for the class of compatible double posets. In this paper we generalize their description to all d…
We derive the explicit formula for the inverse of zeta matrix for any graded posets with the finite set of minimal elements . The combinatorial interpretation of this result is given. For that to do special number theoretic code triangles for graded posets are proposed and apart from the present author combinatorial interpretation of $F-nomial$ coefficients another one is proposed referring to the number of all maximal chains in the corresponding poset intervals.
Birational rowmotion is a discrete dynamical system on the set of all positive real-valued functions on a finite poset, which is a birational lift of combinatorial rowmotion on order ideals. It is known that combinatorial rowmotion for a minuscule poset has order equal to the Coxeter number, and exhibits the file homomesy phenomenon for refined order ideal cardinality statistic. In this paper we generalize these results to the birational setting. Moreover, as a generalization of birational promotion on a product of two chains, we introduce birational Coxeter-motion on minuscule posets, and pro…
Matroid bundles, introduced by MacPherson, are combinatorial analogues of real vector bundles. This paper sets up the foundations of matroid bundles, and defines a natural transformation from isomorphism classes of real vector bundles to isomorphism classes of matroid bundles, as well as a transformation from matroid bundles to spherical quasifibrations. The poset of oriented matroids of a fixed rank classifies matroid bundles, and the above transformations give a splitting from topology to combinatorics back to topology. This shows the mod 2 cohomology of the poset of rank k oriented matroids…
Let X be a finite set. This paper describes some topological and combinatorial properties of the poset Ω_X of order relations on X. In particular, the homotopy type of all the intervals in Ω_X is precisely determined, and the Möbius function of Ω_X is computed.
By using only combinatorial data on two posets X and Y, we construct a set of so-called formulas. A formula produces simultaneously, for any abelian category A, a functor between the categories of complexes of diagrams over X and Y with values in A. This functor induces a triangulated functor between the corresponding derived categories. This allows us to prove, for pairs X, Y of posets sharing certain common underlying combinatorial structure, that for any abelian category A, regardless of its nature, the categories of diagrams over X and Y with values in A are derived equivalent.
We study $r$-differential posets, a class of combinatorial objects introduced in 1988 by the first author, which gathers together a number of remarkable combinatorial and algebraic properties, and generalizes important examples of ranked posets, including the Young lattice. We first provide a simple bijection relating differential posets to a certain class of hypergraphs, including all finite projective planes, which are shown to be naturally embedded in the initial ranks of some differential poset. As a byproduct, we prove the existence, if and only if $r\geq 6$, of $r$-differential posets no…
Recently, Kitaev and Remmel posed a conjecture concerning the generating function for the number of unlabeled $(2+2)$-free posets with respect to number of elements and number of minimal elements. In this paper, we present a combinatorial proof of this conjecture.
To every poset P, Stanley (1986) associated two polytopes, the order polytope and the chain polytope, whose geometric properties reflect the combinatorial qualities of P. This construction allows for deep insights into combinatorics by way of geometry and vice versa. Malvenuto and Reutenauer (2011) introduced 'double posets', that is, (finite) sets equipped with two partial orders, as a generalization of Stanley's labelled posets. Many combinatorial constructions can be naturally phrased in terms of double posets. We introduce the 'double order polytope' and the 'double chain polytope' and we …
We introduce a new combinatorial invariant, which we call crosscut poset, that is finer than the crosscut complex. We exhibit many applications of the crosscut poset which include a generalization of Björner's crosscut theorem and two results concerning the fixed point property and the fixed simplex property.
We introduce a functor ${\sf As}$ from the category of posets to the category of nonsymmetric binary and quadratic operads, establishing a new connection between these two categories. Each operad obtained by the construction ${\sf As}$ provides a generalization of the associative operad because all of its generating operations are associative. This construction has a very singular property: the operads obtained from ${\sf As}$ are almost never basic. Besides, the properties of the obtained operads, such as Koszulity, basicity, associative elements, realization, and dimensions, depend on combin…
In this undergraduate thesis, we expand on the study of statistics on restricted growth functions avoiding patterns initiated by Campbell, et. al. Restricted growth functions are of interest because they are in bijection with set partitions. We examine the case when a restricted growth function contains a pattern exactly $k$ times, where $k=0$ corresponds to pattern avoidance. We prove results for several statistic and pattern combinations in the case when $k=1$ and define a new type of Wilf equivalence for these patterns. We also examine a poset related to $M(n)$, the poset of integer partiti…
A poset on a certain class of partitions known as k-shapes was recently introduced to provide a combinatorial rule for the expansion of a (k-1)-Schur functions into k-Schur functions at t=1. The main ingredient in this construction was a bijection, which we call the weak bijection, that associates to a k-tableau a pair made out of a (k-1)-tableau and a path in the poset of k-shapes. We define here a concept of charge on k-tableaux (which conjecturally gives a combinatorial interpretation for the expansion coefficients of Hall-Littlewood polynomials into k-Schur functions), and show that it is …
We give a combinatorial expansion of a Schubert homology class in the affine Grassmannian Gr_{SL_k} into Schubert homology classes in Gr_{SL_{k+1}}. This is achieved by studying the combinatorics of a new class of partitions called k-shapes, which interpolates between k-cores and k+1-cores. We define a symmetric function for each k-shape, and show that they expand positively in terms of dual k-Schur functions. We obtain an explicit combinatorial description of the expansion of an ungraded k-Schur function into k+1-Schur functions. As a corollary, we give a formula for the Schur expansion of an…
Poset games are a class of combinatorial game that remain unsolved. Soltys and Wilson proved that computing wining strategies is in \textbf{PSPACE} and aside from special cases such as Nim and N-Free games, \textbf{P} time algorithms for finding ideal play are unknown. This paper presents methods calculate the nimber of posets games allowing for the classification of winning or losing positions. The results present an equivalence of ideal strategies on posets that are seemingly unrelated.
The purpose of this paper is twofold. 1. We give combinatorial bounds on the ranks of the groups $\Tor^{R}_\bullet(k,k)_\bullet$ in the case where $R = k[Λ]$ is an affine semi-group ring, and in the process provide combinatorial proofs for bounds by Eisenbud, Reeves and Totaro on which Tor groups vanish. In addition, we show that if the bounds hold for a field $k$ then they hold for $\field[Λ]$ and any field $\field$. Moreover, we provide a combinatorial construction for a free resolution of $\field$ over $\field[Λ]$ which achieves these bounds. 2. We extend the lexicographic discrete Morse fu…
We show that with any finite partially ordered set one can associate a matrix whose determinant factors nicely. As corollaries, we obtain a number of results in the literature about GCD matrices and their relatives. Our main theorem is proved combinatorially using nonintersecting paths in a directed graph.
The construction of the Bier sphere Bier(K) for a simplicial complex K is due to Bier. Björner, Paffenholz, Sjöstrand and Ziegler generalize this construction to obtain a Bier poset Bier(P,I) from any bounded poset P and any proper ideal I of P. They show shellability of Bier(P,I) for the case where P is the boolean lattice, and obtain thereby 'many shellable spheres' in the sense of Kalai. We put the Bier construction into the general framework of the theory of nested set complexes of Feichtner and Kozlov. We obtain 'more shellable spheres' by proving the general statement that combinatorial …
We generalize the concept of combinatorial nested set complexes to posets and exhibit the topological relationship between the arising nested set complexes and the order complex of the underlying poset. In particular, a sufficient condition is given so that this relationship is actually a subdivision. We use the results to generalize the proof method of Čukić and Delucchi, so far restricted to semilattices, for a result of Björner, Paffenholz, Sjöstrand and Ziegler on the Bier construction on posets.
We define combinatorially a partial order on the set partitions and show that it is equivalent to the Bruhat-Chevalley-Renner order on the upper triangular matrices. By considering subposets consisting of set partitions with a fixed number of blocks, we introduce and investigate "Stirling posets." As we show, the Stirling posets have a hierarchy and they glue together to give the whole set partition poset. Moreover, we show that they (Stirling posets) are graded and EL-shellable. We offer various reformulations of their length functions and determine the recurrences for their length generating…
We address the following natural but hitherto unstudied question: what are the possible linear extension numbers of an $n$-element poset? Let $\mathbf{LE}(n)$ denote the set of all positive integers that arise as the number of linear extensions of some $n$-element poset. We show that $\mathbf{LE}(n)$ skews towards the "small" end of the interval $[1,n!]$. More specifically, $\mathbf{LE}(n)$ contains all of the positive integers up to $\exp\left(c\frac{n}{\log n}\right)$ for some absolute constant $c$, and $|\mathbf{LE}(n) \cap ((n-1)!,n!]|<(n-3)!$. The proof of the former statement involves so…
A combinatorial study of multiple $q$-integrals is developed. This includes a $q$-volume of a convex polytope, which depends upon the order of $q$-integration. A multiple $q$-integral over an order polytope of a poset is interpreted as a generating function of linear extensions of the poset. Specific modifications of posets are shown to give predictable changes in $q$-integrals over their respective order polytopes. This method is used to combinatorially evaluate some generalized $q$-beta integrals. One such application is a combinatorial interpretation of a $q$-Selberg integral. New generatin…
Several recent papers have explored families of rational polyhedra whose integer points are in bijection with certain families of numerical semigroups. One such family, first introduced by Kunz, has integer points in bijection with numerical semigroups of fixed multiplicity, and another, introduced by Hellus and Waldi, has integer points corresponding to oversemigroups of numerical semigroups with two generators. In this paper, we provide a combinatorial framework from which to study both families of polyhedra. We introduce a new family of polyhedra called group cones, each constructed from so…
For any marked poset we define a continuous family of polytopes, parametrized by a hypercube, generalizing the notions of marked order and marked chain polytopes. By providing transfer maps, we show that the vertices of the hypercube parametrize an Ehrhart equivalent family of lattice polytopes. The combinatorial type of the polytopes is constant when the parameters vary in the relative interior of each face of the hypercube. Moreover, with the help of a subdivision arising from a tropical hyperplane arrangement associated to the marked poset, we give an explicit description of the vertices of…
We study dismantlability in graphs. In order to compare this notion to similar operations in posets (partially ordered sets) or in simplicial complexes, we prove that a graph G dismants on a subgraph H if and only if H is a strong deformation retract of G. Then, by looking at a triangle relating graphs, posets and simplicial complexes, we get a precise correspondence of the various notions of dismantlability in each framework. As an application, we study the link between the graph of morphisms from a graph G to a graph H and the polyhedral complex Hom(G,H); this gives a more precise statement …
C. Ingalls and H. Thomas defined support tilting modules for path algebras. From tau-tilting theory introduced by T. Adachi, O. Iyama and I. Reiten, a partial order on the set of basic tilting modules defined by D. Happel and L. Unger is extended as a partial order on the set of support tilting modules. In this paper, we study a combinatorial relationship between the poset of basic tilting modules and basic support tilting modules. We will show that the subposet of tilting modules is uniquely determined by the poset structure of the set of support tilting modules.

A natural partial ordering exists on the set of all weighted games and, more broadly, on all linear games. We describe several properties of the partially ordered sets formed by these games and utilize this perspective to enumerate proper linear games with one generator. We introduce a geometric approach to weighted voting by considering the convex polytope of all possible realizations of a weighted game and connect this geometric perspective to the weighted games poset in several ways. In particular, we prove that generic vertical lines in $C_n$, the union of all weighted $n$-player polytopes…
The W-set of an element of a weak order poset is useful in the cohomological study of the closures of spherical subgroups in generalized flag varieties. We explicitly describe in a purely combinatorial manner the W-sets of the weak order posets of three different sets of involutions in the symmetric group, namely, the set of all involutions, the set of all fixed point free involutions, and the set of all involutions with signed fixed points (or "clans"). These distinguished sets of involutions parameterize Borel orbits in the classical symmetric spaces associated to the general linear group. I…
Generalized permutahedra are a family of polytopes with a rich combinatorial structure and strong connections to optimization. We prove that they are the universal family of polyhedra with a certain Hopf algebraic structure. Their antipode is remarkably simple: the antipode of a polytope is the alternating sum of its faces. Our construction provides a unifying framework to organize numerous combinatorial structures, including graphs, matroids, posets, set partitions, linear graphs, hypergraphs, simplicial complexes, building sets, and simple graphs. We highlight three applications: 1. We obtai…
The combined work of Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes, Jelínek, Kitaev, Kubitzke and Parviainen has resulted in non-trivial bijections among ascent sequences, (2+2)-free posets, upper-triangular integer matrices, and pattern-avoiding permutations. To probe the finer behavior of these bijections, we study two types of restrictions on ascent sequences. These restrictions are motivated by our results that their images under the bijections are natural and combinatorially significant. In addition, for one restriction, we are able to determine the effect of poset duality on the corresponding ascent s…
We consider generalizations of Schuetzenberger's promotion operator on the set L of linear extensions of a finite poset of size n. This gives rise to a strongly connected graph on L. By assigning weights to the edges of the graph in two different ways, we study two Markov chains, both of which are irreducible. The stationary state of one gives rise to the uniform distribution, whereas the weights of the stationary state of the other has a nice product formula. This generalizes results by Hendricks on the Tsetlin library, which corresponds to the case when the poset is the anti-chain and hence …
We investigate a natural Heyting algebra structure on the set of Dyck paths of the same length. We provide a geometrical description of the operations of pseudocomplement and relative pseudocomplement, as well as of regular elements. We also find a logic-theoretic interpretation of such Heyting algebras, which we call Dyck algebras, by showing that they are the algebraic counterpart of a certain fragment of a classical interval temporal logic (also known as Halpern-Shoham logic). Finally, we propose a generalization of our approach, suggesting a similar study of the Heyting algebra arising fro…
Many combinatorial proofs rely on induction. When these proofs are formulated in traditional language, they can be bulky and unmanageable. Coalgebras provide a language which can reduce reduce many inductive proofs in graded poset theory to comprehensible size. As a bonus, the visual form of the resulting recursive proofs suggests combinatorial interpretations for constants appearing in the longer arguments. We use the techniques of coalgebras to compute invariants of toric and affine arrangements as well as of poset products. In additional chapters we prove structure theorems for acyclic orie…
The cross--product conjecture (CPC) of Brightwell, Felsner and Trotter (1995) is a two-parameter quadratic inequality for the number of linear extensions of a poset $P= (X, \prec)$ with given value differences on three distinct elements in $X$. We give two different proofs of this inequality for posets of width two. The first proof is algebraic and generalizes CPC to a four-parameter family. The second proof is combinatorial and extends CPC to a $q$-analogue. Further applications include relationships between CPC and other poset inequalities, including a new $q$-analogue of the Kahn--Saks ineq…
Several recent papers have examined a rational polyhedron $P_m$ whose integer points are in bijection with the numerical semigroups (cofinite, additively closed subsets of the non-negative integers) containing $m$. A combinatorial description of the faces of $P_m$ was recently introduced, one that can be obtained from the divisibility posets of the numerical semigroups a given face contains. In this paper, we study the faces of $P_m$ containing arithmetical numerical semigroups and those containing certain glued numerical semigroups, as an initial step towards better understanding the full fac…
Let $P$ be a poset, $inc(P)$ its incomparability graph, and $X_{inc(P)}$ the corresponding chromatic symmetric function, as defined by Stanley in {\em Adv. Math.}, {\bf 111} (1995) pp.~166--194. Certain conditions on $P$ imply that the expansions of $X_{inc(P)}$ in standard symmetric function bases yield coefficients which have simple combinatorial interpretations. By expressing these coefficients as character evaluations, we extend several of these interpretations to {\em all} posets $P$. Consequences include new combinatorial interpretations of the permanent and other immanants of totally no…
The pinched Veronese poset $V^*_n$ is the poset with ground set consisting of all non-negative integer vectors of length n such that the sum of their coordinates is divisible by $n$ with exception of the vector $(1,...,1)$. For two vectors $a$ and $b$ in $V^*_n$ we have $a \leq b$ if and only if $b - a$ belongs to the ground set of $V^*_n$. We show that every interval in $V^*_n$ is shellable for $n$ at least 4. In order to obtain the result, we develop a new method for showing that a poset is shellable. This method differs from classical lexicographic shellability. Shellability of intervals in…
