Symplectic structures associated to connection forms on certain types of principal fiber bundles are constructed via analysis of reduced geometric structures on fibered manifolds invariant under naturally related symmetry groups. This approach is then applied to nonstandard Hamiltonian analysis of of dynamical systems of Maxwell and Yang-Mills type. A symplectic reduction theory of the classical Maxwell equations is formulated so as to naturally include the Lorentz condition (ensuring the existence of electromagnetic waves), thereby solving the well known Dirac -Fock - Podolsky problem. Symplectically reduced Poissonian structures and the related classical minimal interaction principle for the Yang-Mills equations are also considered. 1.
The canonical reduction algorithm is applied to Maxwell and Yang-Mills equations considered as Hamiltonian systems on some fiber bundles with symplectic and connection structures. The minimum interaction principle proved to have geometric origin within the reduction method devised.
The theorem which says that helicity is the conserved quantity associated with the duality symmetry of the vacuum Maxwell equations is proved by viewing electromagnetism as an infinite dimensional symplectic system. In fact, it is shown that helicity is the moment map of duality acting as an $SO(2)$ group of canonical transformations on the symplectic space of all solutions of the vacuum Maxwell equations.
The Hamiltonian formalism is extremely elegant and convenient to mechanics problems. However, its application to the classical field theories is a difficult task. In fact, you can set one to one correspondence between the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian in the case of hyperregular Lagrangian. It is impossible to do the same in gauge-invariant field theories. In the case of irregular Lagrangian the Dirac Hamiltonian formalism with constraints is usually used, and this leads to a number of certain difficulties. The paper proposes a reformulation of the problem to the case of a field without sources. …
In the Standard Model of electroweak interactions the fundamental fermions acquire masses by the Yukawa interaction with the (spin 0) Higgs field. In our model spin 1/2 fermions acquire masses by an interaction with (spin 1) gauge field with symplectic symmetry.
I develop a theory of symplectic reduction that applies to bounded regions in Yang-Mills theory and electromagnetism. In this theory gauge-covariant superselection sectors for the electric flux through the boundary of the region play a central role: within such sectors, there exists a natural, canonically defined, symplectic structure for the reduced Yang-Mills theory. This symplectic structure does not require the inclusion of any new degrees of freedom. In the non-Abelian case, it also supports a family of Hamiltonian vector fields, which I call "flux rotations," generated by smeared, Poisso…
The paper covers known facts about the Dixmier trace (with some generalities about traces), the Wodzicki residue, and Connes' trace theorem, including two variants of proof of the latter. Action formulas are treated very sketchy, because they were considered in other lectures of the workshop.
We consider the Dirichlet to Neumann operator for abelian Yang- Mills boundary conditions. We treat the case for space-time manifolds with general smooth boundary components. The aim is constructing a complex structure for the symplectic space of boundary conditions of Euler-Lagrange solutions modulo gauge. Thus we prepare a suitable scenario for geometric quantization of abelian gauge fields following a symplectic reduction procedure in a Lagrangian setting.
Suppose that a Lie group $G$ acts properly on a configuration manifold $Q$. We study the symplectic quotient of $T^*Q$ with respect to the cotangent lifted $G$-action at an arbitrary coadjoint orbit level $\mathcal{O}$. In particular, if $Q=Q_{(H)}$ is of single orbit type we show that the symplectic quotient of $T^*Q$ at $\mathcal{O}$ can be constructed through a minimal coupling procedure involving the smaller cotangent bundle $T^*Q_H$, the symplectic quotient of $\mathcal{O}$ at 0 with respect to the $H$-action, and the diagonal Hamiltonian $N(H)/H$-action on these symplectic spaces. A pres…
The symmetric and gauge-invariant energy-momentum tensors for source-free Maxwell and Yang-Mills theories are obtained by means of translations in spacetime via a systematic implementation of Noether's theorem. For the source-free neutral Proca field, the same procedure yields also the symmetric energy-momentum tensor. In all cases, the key point to get the right expressions for the energy-momentum tensors is the appropriate handling of their equations of motion and the Bianchi identities. It must be stressed that these results are obtained without using Belinfante's symmetrization techniques …
We show that (specifically scaled) equations of shear-free null geodesic congruences on the Minkowski space-time possess intrinsic self-dual, restricted gauge and algebraic structures. The complex eikonal, Weyl 2-spinor, $SL(2,\mathbb C)$ Yang-Mills and complex Maxwell fields, the latter produced by integer-valued electric charges ("elementary" for the Kerr-like congruences), can all be explicitly associated with any shear-free null geodesic congruence. Using twistor variables, we derive the general solution of the equations of the shear-free null geodesic congruence (as a modification of the …
Expressions for the general and complete perturbations in terms of Debye potentials of static charged black holes in string theory, valid for curvature below the Planck scale, are derived starting from a decoupled set of equations and using Wald's method of adjoint operators. Our results cover both extremal and nonextremal black holes and are valid for arbitrary values of the dilaton coupling parameter. The decoupled set is obtained using the Newman-Penrose formulation of the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory and involves naturally field quantities invariant under both ordinary gauge transformat…
We consider Maxwell-Lorentz dynamics: that is to say, Newton's law under the action of a Lorentz's force which obeys the Maxwell equations. A natural class of solutions are those given by the Lagrangian submanifolds of the phase space when it is endowed with the symplectic structure modified by the electromagnetic field. We have found that the existence of this type of solution leads us directly to the Klein-Gordon equation as a compatibility condition. Therefore, surprisingly, quite natural assumptions on the classical theory involve a quantum condition without any process of limit. This resu…
In this thesis the generally covariant locality principle for bosonic free fields has been thoroughly analyzed devoting particular attention to the case of spin 1 fields on curved spacetimes (Proca and Maxwell fields). This has been obtained in two steps: In the first place the preliminary study of the corresponding field equations led to the construction of a symplectic space of solutions describing the classical theories of the considered fields. Secondly the locally covariant quantum theory of the field under consideration has been obtained through the assignment of the Weyl algebra associa…
A lattice Maxwell system is developed with gauge-symmetry, symplectic structure and discrete space-time symmetry. Noether's theorem for Lie group symmetries is generalized to discrete symmetries for the lattice Maxwell system. As a result, the lattice Maxwell system is shown to admit a discrete local energy-momentum conservation law corresponding to the discrete space-time symmetry. These conservative properties make the discrete system an effective algorithm for numerically solving the governing differential equations on continuous space-time. Moreover, the lattice model, respecting all conse…
Let A be the space of irreducible connections (vector potentials) over a SU(n)-principal bundle on a three-dimensional manifold M. Let T be the fiber product of the tangent and cotangent bundles of A. We endow T with a symplectic structure Ωwhich is represented by a vortex formula. The corresponding Poisson bracket will give a parallel formula discussed by Marsden-Weinstein in case of the electric-magnetic field, U(1)-gauge. We shall prove the Maxwell equations on T. The first two equations are the Hamilton equations of motion derived from the symplectic structure on T, and the second equation…
The Hamiltonian analysis for the Euler and Second-Chern classes is performed. We show that, in spite of the fact that the Second-Chern and Euler invariants give rise to the same equations of motion, their corresponding symplectic structures on the phase space are different, therefore, one can expect different quantum formulations. In addition, the symmetries of actions written as a BF-like theory that lead to Yang-Mills equations of motion are studied. A close relationship with the results obtained in previous works for the Second-Chern and Euler classes is found.
For a Lie groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ with Lie algebroid $A$, we realize the symplectic leaves of the Lie-Poisson structure on $A^*$ as orbits of the affine coadjoint action of the Lie groupoid $\mathcal{J}\mathcal{G}\ltimes T^*M$ on $A^*$, which coincide with the groupoid orbits of the symplectic groupoid $T^*\mathcal{G}$ over $A^*$. It is also shown that there is a fiber bundle structure on each symplectic leaf. In the case of gauge groupoids, a symplectic leaf is the universal phase space for a classical particle in a Yang-Mills field.
Just recently, the class of all Einstein-Maxwell fields solving simultaneously also any higher-order modification of the Eintein-Maxwell theory has been completely identified. In the present work, we argue that, in view of our recent results on nonabelian gauge fields, analogous identification can be in fact achieved for Einstein-Yang-Mills fields associated with any compact and semisimple gauge group. In particular, any such solution consists of a $VSI$ (vanishing scalar invariant) spacetime metric and a $VSI$ gauge field, both subject to a simple tensorial condition. Based on that, we are ab…
A variant of the accelerating cosmology reconstruction program is developed for $f(R)$ gravity and for a modified Yang-Mills/Maxwell theory. Reconstruction schemes in terms of e-foldings and by using an auxiliary scalar field are developed and carefully compared, for the case of $f(R)$ gravity. An example of a model with a transient phantom behavior without real matter is explicitly discussed in both schemes. Further, the two reconstruction schemes are applied to the more physically interesting case of a Yang-Mills/Maxwell theory, again with explicit examples. Detailed comparison of the two sc…
We discuss the classical and quantum reduction to the space of physical degrees of freedom of Yang--Mills theory on a circle (so that space-time is a cylinder). Although the classical reduced phase space is finite-dimensional, the quantum reduction procedure is mathematically fascinating, involving firstly the Wiener measure on a loop group, secondly a generalization of the Cameron--Martin theorem to loop groups, and thirdly Hall's coherent states for compact Lie groups. Our approach is based on a quantum analogue of the classical Marsden--Weinstein symplectic reduction process.
We investigate linearized gauge theories on globally hyperbolic spacetimes in the BRST formalism. A consistent definition of the classical phase space and of its Cauchy surface analogue is proposed. We prove that it is isomorphic to the phase space in the subsidiary condition approach of Hack and Schenkel in the case of Maxwell, Yang-Mills, and Rarita-Schwinger fields. Defining Hadamard states in the BRST formalism in a standard way, their existence in the Maxwell and Yang-Mills case is concluded from known results in the subsidiary condition (or Gupta-Bleuler) formalism. Within our framework,…
We analyze the constraints for a system of anti self-dual Yang-Mills (ASDYM) equations by means of the modified Faddeev-Jackiw method in K and J gauges à la Yang. We also establish the Hamiltonian flow for ASDYM system through the hidden BRS invariance in both the gauges. Finally, we remark on the bi-Hamiltonian nature of ASDYM and the compatibility of the symplectic structures therein.
We review the construction of homological evolutionary vector fields on infinite jet spaces and partial differential equations. We describe the applications of this concept in three tightly inter-related domains: the variational Poisson formalism (e.g., for equations of Korteweg-de Vries type), geometry of Liouville-type hyperbolic systems (including the 2D Toda chains), and Euler-Lagrange gauge theories (such as the Yang-Mills theories, gravity, or the Poisson sigma-models). Also, we formulate several open problems.
A local normal form theorem for smooth equivariant maps between Fréchet manifolds is established. Moreover, an elliptic version of this theorem is obtained. The proof these normal form results is inspired by the Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction for dynamical systems and by the Kuranishi method for moduli spaces, and uses a slice theorem for Fréchet manifolds as the main technical tool. As a consequence of this equivariant normal form theorem, the abstract moduli space obtained by factorizing a level set of the equivariant map with respect to the group action carries the structure of a Kuranishi spac…
A detailed description of the infinite-dimensional Lie algebra of star-gauge transformations in noncommutative Yang-Mills theory is presented. Various descriptions of this algebra are given in terms of inner automorphisms of the underlying deformed algebra of functions on spacetime, of deformed symplectic diffeomorphisms, of the infinite unitary Lie algebra, and of the algebra of compact operators on a quantum mechanical Hilbert space. The spacetime and string interpretations are also elucidated.
