We investigate direct photon production in pp collisions at the energies of RHIC, CDF and LHC, at different rapidities employing various color-dipole models. The cross section peaks at forward rapidities due to the abelian dynamics of photon radiation. This opens new opportunities for measurement of direct photons at forward rapidities, where the background from radiative hadronic decays is strongly suppressed. Our model calculations show that photon production is sensitive to the gluon saturation effects, and strongly depends on the value of the anomalous dimension.
We investigate hadrons and direct photon production in pp collisions at the LHC energy within the color-dipole approach. We show that greatest sensitivity to gluon saturation effects is reached at very forward rapidities in pp collisions at LHC (\sqrt{s}=14 TeV). The discrepancies among various saturation models (fitted to HERA data) results can be about a factor of 2-3 at forward rapidities. We found that the ratio of direct-photon to pion production can be about 20-10 at forward rapidities η=7-8. Therefore, direct photon production at forward rapidities should provide a rather clean probe as…
We point out that the suppression in the ratio R_dAu recently observed by the BRAHMS collaboration in forward scattering is stronger than usually appreciated. This is related to the fact that at forward rapidities BRAHMS measures negatively charged hadrons and that R_dAu is defined from the ratio of dA and pp scattering cross sections. We also investigate the influence of standard shadowing on R_dAu, and the typical values of partonic momentum fractions relevant in forward scattering. We find that x_Au > 0.02 dominate in the cross section.
We discuss high-pT production processes at forward rapidities in hadron-hadron collisions, and describe recent results from using QCD high-energy factorization in forward jet production at the LHC.
We discuss forward-bacward rapidity correlations in the general situation of asymmetrical collisions, asymmetric rapidity windows, higher rapidities and higher energy. We give predictions for RHIC and LHC.
We calculate nuclear suppression $R_{AA}$ of heavy quarks produced from the initial fusion of partons in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. We take the shadowing as well as the energy loss suffered by them while passing through Quark Gluon Plasma into account. We obtain results for charm and bottom quarks at several rapidities using different mechanisms for energy loss, to see if we can distinguish between them.
In this talk, we present NLO pQCD predictions for inclusive pion and direct photon nuclear modifications in p+Pb collisions at mid- and forward rapidities at the LHC. In addition to the minimum bias predictions, we also address the centrality dependence with spatially dependent nuclear PDFs. To understand which regions of the nuclear momentum fraction $x_2$ these observables predominantly probe, we present also the underlying $x_2$ distributions at different rapidities. We are led to conclude that the isolated photons at forward rapidities are more sensitive to the small-$x_2$ dynamics than th…
This is a continuation of recent studies of $Υ(nS)$ production at the LHC in pp collisions. Our previous studies were for rapidity y=-1 to 1 for the CMS detector, while the present study is for y=2.5 to 4.0 at the LHC.
We explore the influence of a temperature-dependent shear viscosity over entropy density ratio $η/s$ on the azimuthal anisotropies v_2 and v_4 of hadrons at various rapidities. We find that in Au+Au collisions at full RHIC energy, $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV, the flow anisotropies are dominated by hadronic viscosity at all rapidities, whereas in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC energy, $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2760$ GeV, the flow coefficients are affected by the viscosity both in the plasma and hadronic phases at midrapidity, but the further away from midrapidity, the more dominant the hadronic viscosity is. We …
Data from E772 and E866 experiments on the Drell-Yan process exhibit a significant nuclear suppression at large Feynman xF. We show that a corresponding kinematic region does not allow to interpret this as a manifestation of coherence or a Color Glass Condensate. We demonstrate, however, that this suppression can be treated alternatively as an effective energy loss proportional to initial energy. To eliminate suppression coming from the coherence, we perform predictions for nuclear effects also at large dilepton masses. Our calculations are in a good agreement with available data. Since the ki…
We study a strong suppression of the relative production rate (d-Au)/(p-p) for inclusive high-pT hadrons of different species at large forward rapidities (large Feynman xF). The model predictions calculated in the light-cone dipole approach are in a good agreement with the recent measurements by the BRAHMS and STAR Collaborations at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. We predict a similar suppression at large pT and large xF also at lower energies, where no effect of coherence is possible. It allows to exclude the saturation models or the models based on Color Glass Condensate from interp…
Inclusive direct photon production in p+Pb collisions at the LHC is studied within the NLO perturbative QCD. Our aim is to quantify the dominant $x$ regions probed at different rapidities and to identify the best conditions for testing the nuclear gluon parton distribution functions (nPDFs) at small $x$. A comparison to the inclusive pion production reveals that from these two processes the photons carry more sensitivity to the small-$x$ partons and that this sensitivity can be further increased by imposing an isolation cut for the photon events. The details of the isolation criteria, however,…
Single inclusive particle production at next-to-leading order in proton-nucleus collisions at forward rapidities: hybrid approach meets TMD factorization
The gauge boson production at forward rapidities in single diffractive events at the LHC is investigated considering $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 8 and 13 TeV. The impact of gap survival effects is analysed using two different models for the soft rescattering contributions. We demonstrate that using the Forward Shower Counter Project at LHCb -- HERSCHEL, together with the Vertex Locator -- VELO, it is possible to discriminate diffractive production of the gauge bosons $W$ and $Z$ from the non-diffractive processes and studies of the Pomeron structure and diffraction phenomenology are feasib…
Final states with a vector boson and a hadronic jet allow one to infer the Born-level kinematics of the underlying hard scattering process, thereby probing the partonic structure of the colliding protons. At forward rapidities, the parton collisions are highly asymmetric and resolve the parton distributions at very large or very small momentum fractions, where they are less well constrained by other processes. Using theory predictions accurate to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD for both $\mathrm{W}^{\pm}$ and $\mathrm{Z}$ production in association with a jet at large rapidities at …
The dilepton production in diffractive and exclusive processes at forward rapidities considering ultraperipheral $PbPb$ collisions at the LHC is investigated. Predictions for the $e^+ e^-$, $μ^+ μ^-$ and $τ^+ τ^-$ cross sections are presented taking into account of realistic cuts that can be implemented by the LHCb Collaboration in a future experimental analysis. Our results indicate that the background associated with the diffractive production can be strongly suppressed and the exclusive processes can be cleanly separated. For the $τ^+ τ^-$ production, the semi and purely leptonic decay chan…
The description of the hadron production at very forward rapidities and low transverse momentum is usually made using phenomenological models based on nonperturbative physics. However, at high energies and large rapidities the wave function of one of the projectiles is probed at very small Bjorken $x$, being characterized by a large number of gluons. In this kinematical regime, a new state of matter - the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) - is expected to be formed. One the main characteristics of such system is the presence of a new dynamical momentum scale, the saturation scale $Q_s$, which can a…
The particle production at very forward rapidities is expected to be sensitive to the non-linear effects in the QCD dynamics at high energies. In this paper we present, for the first time, the predictions of the Color Dipole formalism for the single inclusive jet photoproduction in $pp$ and $pPb$ collisions considering the very forward rapidities probed by the CMS-CASTOR calorimeter, which will be characterized by a jet in the rapidity range of $5.2 \le Y \le 6.6$, a rapidity gap in the rapidity range probed by the central CMS detector and one of the incident hadrons remaining intact in the fi…
In this paper, we present the results from phenomenological analysis of Z boson pair hard diffractive production at the LHC. The calculation is based on the Regge factorization approach. Diffractive parton density functions extracted by the H1 Collaboration at DESY-HERA are used. The multiple Pomeron exchange corrections are considered through the rapidity gap survival probability factor. We give numerical predictions for single diffractive as well as double Pomeron exchange cross sections and compare with the photon-induced and non-diffractive ones. The contributions from quark-anti-quark col…
We study $D$ - meson production at forward rapidities taking into account the non - linear effects in the QCD dynamics and the intrinsic charm component of the proton wave function. The total cross section, the rapidity distributions and the Feynman - $x$ distributions are calculated for $p p$ collisions at different center of mass energies. Our results show that, at the LHC, the intrinsic charm component changes the $D$ rapidity distributions in a region which is beyond the coverage of the LHCb detectors. At higher energies the IC component dominates the $y$ and $x_F$ distributions exactly in…
We compute the cross section for photons emitted from sea quarks in proton-nucleus collisions at collider energies. The computation is performed within the dilute-dense kinematics of the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) effective field theory. Albeit the result obtained is formally at next-to-leading order in the CGC power counting, it provides the dominant contribution for central rapidities. We observe that the inclusive photon cross section is proportional to all-twist Wilson line correlators in the nucleus. These correlators also appear in quark-pair production; unlike the latter, photon produ…
We review the predictions of the theory of Color Glass Condensate for gluon production cross section in p(d)A collisions. We demonstrate that at moderate energies, when the gluon production cross section can be calculated in the framework of McLerran-Venugopalan model, it has only partonic level Cronin effect in it. At higher energies/rapidities corresponding to smaller values of Bjorken x quantum evolution becomes important. The effect of quantum evolution at higher energies/rapidities is to introduce suppression of high-p_T gluons slightly decreasing the Cronin enhancement. At still higher e…
We calculate isolated photon production at forward rapidities in proton-nucleus collisions in the Color Glass Condensate framework. Our calculation uses dipole cross sections solved from the running coupling Balitsky-Kovchegov equation with an initial condition fit to deep inelastic scattering data and extended to nuclei with an optical Glauber procedure that introduces no additional parameters beyond the basic nuclear geometry. We present predictions for future forward RHIC and LHC measurements. The predictions are also compared to updated results for the nuclear modification factors for pion…
We discuss the Drell-Yan production of dileptons at high energies in the forward rapidity region of proton-proton collisions in a hybrid high-energy approach. This approach uses unintegrated gluon distributions in one proton and collinear quark/antiquark distributions in the second proton. We compute various distributions for the case of low-mass dilepton production and compare to the LHCb and ATLAS experimental data on dilepton mass distributions. In distinction to dipole approaches, we include four Drell-Yan structure functions as well as cuts at the level of lepton kinematics. The impact of…
The manuscript presents generalization of the Landau hydrodynamic solution for multiparticle production applied for non-central relativistic heavy ion collisions. Obtained solution enables to calculate anisotropy parameter $v_2$ for different rapidities with respect to the initial conditions for hydrodynamics.
The dilepton production at backward rapidities in $pAu$ and $pp$ collisions at RHIC and LHC energies is investigated in the dipole approach. The results are shown through the nuclear modification ratio $R_{pA}$ considering transverse momentum and rapidity spectra. The dilepton modification ratio presents interesting behavior at the backward rapidities when compared with the already known forward ones, since it is related with the large $x$ kinematical region that is being probed. The rapidity dependence of the nuclear modification ratio in the dilepton production is strongly dependent on the B…
We analyse W boson production at hadron colliders in association with one or two jets, both with the exact kinematics and in the high-energy limit. We argue that the configurations that are kinematically favoured tend to have the W boson forward in rapidity. Thus W boson production in association with jets lends itself naturally to extensions to the high-energy limit, which we examine both at leading order and by resumming higher-order corrections through the BFKL theory.
In this paper we investigate the hadron and photon production at forward rapidities in $pp$ and $pA$ collisions considering two phenomenological models based on the Color Glass Condensate formalism. The predictions of these models for the hadron spectra are compared with the dAu and pp RHIC data and the nuclear modification factor $R_{hA}$ is estimated. Our results demonstrate that the analysis of the transverse momentum dependence of this factor allows to discriminate between the phenomenological models. Furthermore, we predict $R_{hA}$ for photon production at forward rapidities at RHIC and …
We investigate heavy-quark production as a function of the rapidity interval between two heavy quarks in hadronic collisions. We compare the results relevant to bottom production at the Tevatron and at LHC, obtained using exact leading-order and NLO pQCD production, as well as the contribution of the 4b channel with and without the addition of BFKL gluon radiation.
Using the dipole picture for electron-nucleus deep inelastic scattering at small Bjorken $x$, we study the effects of gluon saturation in the nuclear target on the cross-section for SIDIS (single inclusive hadron, or jet, production). We argue that the sensitivity of this process to gluon saturation can be enhanced by tagging on a hadron (or jet) which carries a large fraction $z \simeq 1$ of the longitudinal momentum of the virtual photon. This opens the possibility to study gluon saturation in relatively hard processes, where the virtuality $Q^2$ is (much) larger than the target saturation m…
In the paper we discuss the angular correlation present in hadron-hadron collisions at large rapidity difference ($\bas\,y_{12}\,\gg\,1$). We find that in the CGC/saturation approach the largest contribution stems from the density variation mechanism. Our principal results are that the odd Fourier harmonics($v_{2n+1}$), decrease substantially as function of $y_{12}$, while the even harmonics ($v_{2n}$ ), increase considerably with a growth of $y_{12}$.
We investigate hadrons and direct photon production in pp and pA collisions at the energies of RHIC and LHC within the color-dipole approach employing various saturation models. We show that greatest sensitivity to saturation effects is reached at very forward rapidities for pp collisions at LHC (\sqrt{s}=14 TeV). The ratio of direct-photon to pion production can be about 20-10 (at η=7-8). Therefore, direct photon production at forward rapidities should provide a rather clean probe. We calculate the rapidity dependence of the invariant cross-section and find some peculiar enhancement at forwar…
Longitudinal hydrodynamic expansion of the fluid created in relativistic heavy-collisions is considered taking into account shear viscosity. Both a on-vanishing viscosity and a soft equation of state make particle distributions in rapidity narrower. The presence of viscosity has dramatic consequence on the value of the initial energy density. The reduction of the longitudinal work and dissipative processes due to the shear viscosity, increase the total entropy and the particle multiplicity at central rapidities. The total energy in the collision, dominated by the longitudinal motion, is conser…
As the signature manifestation of QCD in high energy nuclear collisions jet production provides essential tests of that theory. But event-wise jet reconstruction can be complex and susceptible to measurement bias. And QCD theory in the form of Monte Carlo models of elementary collisions can also be complex and difficult to test. It may be beneficial to construct a simple static model of jet production in p-p collisions to facilitate data comparisons and model tests. QCD is a logarithmic theory featuring variations with energy scale of the form $\log(s/s_0)$. Jet-related data such as parton fra…
We consider the J/Psi production in proton (deuteron) -- nucleus collisions at high energies. We argue that the production mechanism in this case is different from that in pp collisions due to gluon saturation in the nucleus and formation of the Color Glass Condensate. At forward rapidities (in the proton fragmentation region), the production of J/Psi is increasingly suppressed both as a function of rapidity and centrality. On the other hand, at backward rapidities at RHIC (in the fragmentation region of the nucleus) the coherent effects lead to a modest enhancement of the production cross sec…
We present first measurable predictions for electromagnetic (two-photon) double scattering production of two positron-electron pairs in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions at LHC. Measureable cross sections are obtained with realistic cuts on electron/positron (pseudo)rapidities and transverse momenta for the ALICE and ATLAS or CMS experiments. The predictions for total and differential cross sections are presented. We show also two-dimensional distributions in rapidities of the opposite-sign (from the same or different subcollisions) and of the same-sign ($e^+ e^+$ or $e^- e^-$) electrons an…
We discuss the role of intrinsic charm (IC) in the nucleon for forward production of $c$-quark (or $\bar c$-antiquark) in proton-proton collisions for low and high energies. The calculations are performed in collinear-factorization approach with on-shell partons, $k_T$-factorization approach with off-shell partons as well as in a hybrid approach using collinear charm distributions and unintegrated (transverse momentum dependent) gluon distributions. For the collinear-factorization approach we use matrix elements for both massless and massive charm quarks/antiquarks. The distributions in rapidi…
We calculate isolated photon production at forward rapidities in proton-nucleus collisions in the Color Glass Condensate framework. Our calculation uses dipole cross sections solved from the running coupling Balitsky-Kovchegov equation with an initial condition fit to deep inelastic scattering data. For comparison, we also update the results for the nuclear modification factor for pion production in the same kinematics. We present predictions for future forward RHIC and LHC measurements at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV and $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=8$ TeV.
We perform a quantitative analysis of the nuclear modification factor in deuteron--gold collisions R(dAu) within the Color Glass Condensate approach, and compare our results with the recent data from RHIC experiments. Our model leads to Cronin enhancement at mid-rapidity, while at forward rapidities it predicts strong suppression of R(dAu) at all pT due to low-x evolution. We demonstrate that our results are consistent with the data for dAu charged hadron spectra, R(dAu) and R(CP) recently reported for rapidities in the interval eta=0--3.2 by the BRAHMS experiment at RHIC. We also make a predi…
Photon-jet azimuthal correlations in proton-nucleus collisions are a promising tool for gaining information on the gluon distribution of the nucleus in the regime of non-linear color fields. We compute such correlations from the process $g+A\to q \bar{q} γ$ in the rapidity regime where both the projectile and target light-cone momentum fractions are small. By integrating over the phase space of the quark which emits the photon, subject to the restriction that the photon picks up most of the transverse momentum (to pass an isolation cut), we effectively obtain a $g+A\to q γ$ process. For nearly…
We present results on bottom hadron production asymmetries at the LHC within both the Lund string fragmentation model and the intrinsic bottom model. The main aspects of the models are summarized and specific predictions for pp collisions at 14 TeV are given. Asymmetries are found to be very small at central rapidities increasing to a few percent at forward rapidities. At very large rapidities intrinsic production could dominate but this region is probably out of reach of any experiment.
We discuss new physical phenomena expected in particle production in hadron-hadron collisions at high energy, as a consequence of Pomeron loop effects in the evolution equations for the Color Glass Condensate. We focus on gluon production in asymmetric, `dilute-dense', collisions : a dilute projectile scatters off a dense hadronic target, whose gluon distribution is highly evolved. This situation is representative for particle production in proton-proton collisions at forward rapidities (say, at LHC) and admits a dipole factorization similar to that of deep inelastic scattering (DIS). We show …
The ring structures that appear in Au+Au collisions at collision energies $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 3 -- 30 GeV are studied. The calculations are performed within the model of three-fluid dynamics. It is demonstrated that a pare of vortex rings are formed, one at forward and another at backward rapidities, in ultra-central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}>$ 4 GeV. The vortex rings carry information about early stage of the collision, in particular about the stopping of baryons. It is shown that these rings can be detected by measuring the ring observable $R_Λ$ even in rapidity range $0<y<0.5$ (or $-0…
RHIC data on high-$p_T$ hadron production display strong suppression in a wide rapidity region, indicating strong induced energy loss for both transversally and longitudinally traveling partons. We investigate the interplay of energy loss and rapidity dependence in a perturbative QCD improved parton model, and estimate the opacity of the produced hot matter in $AuAu$ collisions at energies $\sqrt{s}=200$ $A$GeV and 63 $A$GeV at different rapidity values. Direction-dependent suppression offers the possibility to study the geometry of the hot matter.
This talk discusses basic aspects of forward production of jets in pp collisions at high energy, including i) issues on QCD factorization for hard processes at large rapidities, and ii) the role of forward jet measurements at the LHC to investigate contributions to parton showers from large-angle gluon radiation and from multiple parton interactions.
In this contribution we discuss the inclusive production of jets in central regions of rapidity in the context of $k_T$-factorization at next-to-leading order (NLO). We work in the Regge limit of QCD and use the NLO BFKL results. A jet cone definition is proposed together with a phase-space separation into multi-Regge and quasi-multi-Regge kinematics. We discuss scattering of highly virtual photons, with a symmetric energy scale to separate the impact factors from the gluon Green's function, and hadron-hadron collisions, with a non-symmetric scale choice.
We calculate azimuthal correlations in dAu collisions at different rapidities and centralities and argue that experimentally observed depletion of the back-to-back pick can be quantitatively explained by gluon saturation in the Color Glass Condensate of the Gold nucleus.
We discuss a real time, non-perturbative computation of the transverse dynamics of gluon fields at central rapidities in very high energy nuclear collisions.
We discuss jet production at forward rapidities at the LHC. In this region QCD logarithmic corrections in the hard transverse momentum and in the large rapidity interval may both be quantitatively significant. We describe results of using high-energy factorization techniques, which allow one to take into account both kinds of corrections to higher orders in QCD.
We discuss azimuthal correlations in $dAu$ collisions at different rapidities and centralities and argue that experimentally observed depletion of the back-to-back peak can be quantitatively explained by gluon saturation in the Color Glass Condensate of the Gold nucleus.
Exclusive diffractive bremsstrahlung of one and two photons at forward rapidities: Possibilities for experimental studies in $pp$ collisions at the LHC
We present a fully three-dimensional model providing initial conditions for energy and net-baryon density distributions in heavy ion collisions at arbitrary collision energy. The model includes the dynamical deceleration of participating nucleons or valence quarks, depending on the implementation. The duration of the deceleration continues until the string spanned between colliding participants is assumed to thermalize, which is either after a fixed proper time, or a fluctuating time depending on sampled final rapidities. Energy is deposited in space-time along the string, which in general wil…
We revisit the "`hybrid formalism"' for particle production used recently to study saturation effects in single hadron multiplicities at forward rapidities at RHIC and LHC. We point out that at leading twist there is an extra contribution to the formulae used so far, which corresponds to particle production via inelastic scattering of the projectile partons on the target fields. This contribution is expected to be small due to kinematics at very forward rapidities/very high transverse momenta, but should be significant at high momenta and very high energies. This contribution is expected to be…
