We study electron transport properties of some molecular wires and a unconventional disordered thin film within the tight-binding framework using Green's function technique. We show that electron transport is significantly affected by quantum interference of electronic wave functions, molecule-to-electrode coupling strengths, length of the molecular wire and disorder strength. Our model calculations provide a physical insight to the behavior of electron conduction across a bridge system.
Exotic tiling patterns of quasicrystals have gotten a lot of attention for unique quantum phenomena such as critical state and multifractality. In this regard, finding new quasi-periodic tiling patterns and the relevant quantum states is one of the main interests in quasicrystals. Here, we focus on new types of quasicrystals described by coexisting phason flips and discuss their quantum transports with distinct local tiling patterns. It turns out that such new tilings are uniquely descended from the translation of high-dimensional lattices and their projection, in particular, a four-dimensiona…
Taking into account an inner structure of the arms of the Aharonov-Bohm ring (AB ring) we have analyzed the transport features related to the topological phase transition which is induced in a superconducting wire (SC wire) with strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI). The SC wire acts as a bridge connecting the arms. The in-plane magnetic-field dependence of linear-response conductance obtained using the nonequilibrium Green's functions in the tight-binding approximation revealed the Breit-Wigner and Fano resonances (FRs) if the wire is in the nontrivial phase. The effect is explained by the pres…
In this work we theoretically study steady state thermoelectric transport through a single-molecule junction with a long chain-like bridge. Electron transmission through the system is computed using a tight-binding model for the bridge. We analyze dependences of thermocurrent on the bridge length in unbiased and biased systems operating within and beyond linear response regime. It is shown that length-dependent thermocurrent is controlled by the lineshape of electron transmission in the interval corresponding to HOMO/LUMO transport channel. Also, it is demonstrated that electron interactions w…
Interface phonon modes that are generated by several atomic layers at the heterointerface play a major role in the interface thermal conductance for nanoscale high-power devices such as nitride-based high-electron-mobility transistors and light emitting diodes. Here we measure the local phonon spectra across AlN/Si and AlN/Al interfaces using atomically resolved vibrational electron energy-loss spectroscopy in a scanning transmission electron microscope. At the AlN/Si interface, we observe various localized phonon modes, of which the extended and interfacial modes act as bridges to connect the…
We propose a quantum Wheatstone bridge as a fully quantum analogue to the classical version. The bridge is a few-body boundary-driven spin chain exploiting quantum effects to gain an enhanced sensitivity to an unknown coupling. The sensitivity is explained by a drop in population of an entangled Bell state due to destructive interference as the controllable coupling approaches the unknown coupling. A simple criteria for the destructive interference is found, and an approximate expression for the width of the drop is derived. The sensitivity to the unknown coupling is quantified using the quant…
We designed and fabricated a new type of superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) susceptometers for magnetic imaging of quantum materials. The 2-junction SQUID sensors employ 3D Nb nano-bridges fabricated using electron beam lithography. The two counter-wound balanced pickup loops of the SQUID enable gradiometric measurement and they are surrounded by a one-turn field coil for susceptibility measurements. The smallest pickup loop of the SQUIDs were 1 $μm$ in diameter and the flux noise was around 1 $μΦ_0/\sqrt{Hz}$ at 100 Hz. We demonstrate scanning magnetometry, susceptometry and …
We present a single-exposure fabrication technique for a very large array of microscopic air-bridges using a tri-layer resist process with electron-beam lithography. The technique is capable of forming air-bridges with strong metal-metal or metal-substrate connections. This was demonstrated by its application in an electron tunnelling device consisting of 400 identical surface gates for defining quantum wires, where the air-bridges are used as suspended connections for the surface gates. This technique enables us to create a large array of uniform one-dimensional channels that are open at both…
