In this paper we develop an abstract theory for the Codazzi equation on surfaces, and use it as an analytic tool to derive new global results for surfaces in the space forms ${\bb R}^3$, ${\bb S}^3$ and ${\bb H}^3$. We give essentially sharp generalizations of some classical theorems of surface theory that mainly depend on the Codazzi equation, and we apply them to the study of Weingarten surfaces in space forms. In particular, we study existence of holomorphic quadratic differentials, uniqueness of immersed spheres in geometric problems, height estimates, and the geometry and uniqueness of complete or properly embedded Weingarten surfaces.
The fundamental equations of Gauss, Codazzi and Ricci provide the conditions for local isometric embeddability. In general, the three fundamental equations are independent for surfaces in Riemannian 4-manifolds. In contrast, we prove in this article that for arbitrary Lorentz surfaces in Lorentzian Kaehler surfaces the equation of Ricci is a consequence of the equations of Gauss and Codazzi.
Integrability of the (2+1)-dimensional Gauss-Codazzi-Mainardi equation is considered. It is shown that this equation is the particular cases of the Yang-Mills-Higgs-Bogomolny and self-dual Yang-Mills equations.
In this paper, we study the structure of the singular set for a $C^{1}$ smooth surface in the $3$-dimensional Heisenberg group $\boldsymbol{H}_{1}$. We discover a Codazzi-like equation for the $p$-area element along the characteristic curves on the surface. Information obtained from this ordinary differential equation helps us to analyze the local configuration of the singular set and the characteristic curves. In particular, we can estimate the size and obtain the regularity of the singular set. We understand the global structure of the singular set through a Hopf-type index theorem. We also …
We provide a congruence theorem for minimal surfaces in $S^5$ with constant contact angle using Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci equations. More precisely, we prove that Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci equations for minimal surfaces in $S^5$ with constant contact angle satisfy an equation for the Laplacian of the holomorphic angle. Also, we will give a characterization of flat minimal surfaces in $S^5$ with constant contact angle.
We prove that conformally parametrized surfaces in Euclidean space $\Rcubec$ of curvature $c$ admit a symmetry reduction of their Gauss-Codazzi equations whose general solution is expressed with the sixth Painlevé function. Moreover, it is shown that the two known solutions of this type (Bonnet 1867, Bobenko, Eitner and Kitaev 1997) can be recovered by such a reduction.
Using global considerations, Mess proved that the moduli space of globally hyperbolic flat Lorentzian structures on $S\times\mathbb{R}$ is the tangent bundle of the Teichmüller space of $S$, if $S$ is a closed surface. One of the goals of this paper is to deepen this surprising occurrence and to make explicit the relation between the Mess parameters and the embedding data of any Cauchy surface. This relation is pointed out by using some specific properties of Codazzi tensors on hyperbolic surfaces. As a by-product we get a new Lorentzian proof of Goldman's celebrated result about the coinciden…
A new method is presented for solving the Gauss-Codazzi equations for a compact Riemann surface to be immersed in a 3-manifold of constant curvature. In the negative curvature case, the moduli for such embeddings are cohomology classes of (0,2) forms.
In [3] and [11] the authors showed the existence of a Codazzi pair defined on any constant mean curvature surface in the homogeneous spaces E($κ$,$τ$) associated to the Abresch-Rosenberg differential. In this paper, we use the mentioned Codazzi pair to classify capillary disks in E($κ$,$τ$). As a consequence, the results presented in this paper generalize the previous classification of constant mean curvature disks in the product spaces $\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$ in [4] and [5].
The paper is devoted to differential geometry of singular distributions (i.e., of varying dimension) on a Riemannian manifold. Such distributions are defined as images of the tangent bundle under smooth endomorphisms. We prove the novel divergence theorem with the divergence type operator and deduce the Codazzi equation for a pair of singular distributions. Tracing our Codazzi equation yields expression of the mixed scalar curvature through invariants of distributions, which provides some splitting results. Applying our divergence theorem, we get the integral formula, generalizing the known on…
We are concerned with the global weak rigidity of the Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci (GCR) equations on Riemannian manifolds and the corresponding isometric immersions of Riemannian manifolds into the Euclidean spaces. We develop a unified intrinsic approach to establish the global weak rigidity of both the GCR equations and isometric immersions of the Riemannian manifolds, independent of the local coordinates, and provide further insights of the previous local results and arguments. The critical case has also been analyzed. To achieve this, we first reformulate the GCR equations with div-curl structure …
The L-equivalent counterpart of the M-LXIX equation is found. This L-equivalent equation is the Gauss-Codazzi equation which is integrable by the dressing method. This means that the M-LXIX equation is also integrable in this sense.
In this article we study minimal flat Lorentzian surfaces in Lorentzian complex space forms. First we prove that, for minimal flat Lorentzian surfaces in a Lorentzian complex form, the equation of Ricci is a consequence of the equations of Gauss and Codazzi. Then we classify minimal flat Lorentzian surfaces in the Lorentzian complex plane ${\bf C}^2_1$. Finally, we classify minimal flat slant surfaces in Lorentzian complex projective plane $CP^2_1$ and in Lorentzian complex hyperbolic plane $CH^2_1$.
Some of the most important classes of surfaces in projective 3-space are reviewed: these are isothermally asymptotic surfaces, projectively applicable surfaces, surfaces of Jonas, projectively minimal surfaces, etc. It is demonstrated that the corresponding projective "Gauss-Codazzi" equations reduce to integrable systems which are quite familiar from the modern soliton theory and coincide with the stationary flows in the Davey-Stewartson and Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchies, equations of the Toda lattice, etc. The corresponding Lax pairs can be obtained by inserting a spectral parameter in …
The structure equations for a surface are introduced and two required results based on the Codazzi equations are obtained from them. Important theorems pertaining to isometric surfaces are stated and a theorem of Bonnet is obtained. A tranformation formula for the connection forms is developed. It is proved that the angle of deformation must be harmonic. It is shown that the differentials of many of the important variables generate a closed differential ideal. This implies that a coordinate system exists in which many of the variables satisfy particular ordinary differential equations and thes…
In [dLMu05], DeLellis and Müller proved a quantitative version of Codazzi's theorem, namely for a smooth embedded surface $\ Σ\subseteq \mathbb{R}^3\ $ with area normalized to $\ {\cal H}^2(Σ) = 4 π $, it was shown that $\ \parallel A_Σ- id \parallel_{L^2(Σ)} \leq C \parallel A^0_Σ\parallel_{L^2(Σ)}\ $, and building on this, closeness of $\ Σ $ to a round sphere in $\ W^{2,2}\ $ was established, when $\ \parallel A^0_Σ\parallel_{L^2(Σ)}\ $ is small. This was supplemented in [dLMu06] by giving a conformal parametrization $\ S^2 \stackrel{\approx}{\longrightarrow} Σ $ with small conformal factor…
Starting from suitable tableaux over finite dimensional Lie algebras, we provide a scheme for producing involutive linear Pfaffian systems related to various classes of submanifolds in homogeneous spaces which constitute integrable systems. These include isothermic surfaces, Willmore surfaces, and other classical soliton surfaces. Completely integrable equations such as the G/G_0-system of Terng and the curved flat system of Ferus-Pedit may be obtained as special cases of this construction. Some classes of surfaces in projective differential geometry whose Gauss-Codazzi equations are associate…
It is demonstrated that the stationary Veselov-Novikov (VN) and the stationary modified Veselov-Novikov (mVN) equations describe one and the same class of surfaces in projective differential geometry: the so-called isothermally asymptotic surfaces, examples of which include arbitrary quadrics and cubics, quartics of Kummer, projective transforms of affine spheres and rotation surfaces. The stationary mVN equation arises in the Wilczynski approach and plays the role of the projective "Gauss-Codazzi" equations, while the stationary VN equation follows from the Lelieuvre representation of surface…
The class of surfaces in 3-space possessing nontrivial deformations which preserve principal directions and principal curvatures (or, equivalently, the shape operator) was investigated by Finikov and Gambier as far back as in 1933. We review some of the known examples and results, demonstrate the integrability of the corresponding Gauss-Codazzi equations and draw parallels between this geometrical problem and the theory of compatible Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type. It turns out that coordinate hypersurfaces of the n-orthogonal systems arising in the theory of compatible Poisson brackets…
In this paper, through making careful analysis of Gauss and Codazzi equations, we prove that four dimensional biharmonic hypersurfaces in nonzero space form have constant mean curvature. Our result gives the positive answer to the conjecture proposed by Balmus-Montaldo-Oniciuc in 2008 for four dimensional hypersurfaces.
The 1-d Schrodinger flow on 2-sphere, the Gauss-Codazzi equation for flat Lagrangian submanifolds in C^n, and the space-time monopole equation are all examples of geometric soliton equations. The linear systems with a spectral parameter (Lax pair) associated to these equations satisfy the reality condition associated to SU(n). In this article, we explain the method developed jointly with K. Uhlenbeck, that uses various loop group factorizations to construct inverse scattering transforms, Backlund transformations, and solutions to Cauchy problems for these equations.
We approach the study of totally real immersions of smooth manifolds into holomorphic Riemannian space forms of constant sectional curvature -1. We introduce a notion of first and second fundamental form, we prove that they satisfy a similar version of the classic Gauss-Codazzi equations, and conversely that solutions of Gauss-Codazzi equations are immersion data of some equivariant map. This study has some interesting geometric consequences: 1) it provides a formalism to study immersions of surfaces into SL(2,C) and into the space of geodesics of H^3; 2) it generalizes the classical theory of…
We define a complex connection on a real hypersurface of $\C^{n+1}$ which is naturally inherited from the ambient space. Using a system of Codazzi-type equations, we classify connected real hypersurfaces in $\C^{n+1}$, $n\ge 2$, which are Levi umbilical and have non zero constant Levi curvature. It turns out that such surfaces are contained either in a sphere or in the boundary of a complex tube domain with spherical section.
We introduce two families of soliton hierarchies: the twisted hierarchies associated to symmetric spaces. The Lax pairs of these two hierarchies are Laurent polynomials in the spectral variable. Our constructions gives a hierarchy of commuting flows for the generalized sine-Gordon equation (GSGE), which is the Gauss-Codazzi equation for n-dimensional submanifolds in Euclidean (2n-1)-space with constant sectional curvature -1. In fact, the GSGE is the first order system associated to a twisted Grassmannian system. We also study symmetries for the GSGE.
We construct and investigate smooth orientable surfaces in su(N) algebras. The structural equations of surfaces associated with Grassmannian sigma models on Minkowski space are studied using moving frames adapted to the surfaces. The first and second fundamental forms of these surfaces as well as the relations between them as expressed in the Gauss-Weingarten and Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci equations are found. The scalar curvature and the mean curvature vector expressed in terms of a solution of Grassmanian sigma model are obtained.
B.-Y. Chen initiated the study of warped product submanifolds in his fundamental seminal papers \cite{C1,C2,C2.1}. In this paper, we study contact CR-warped product submanifolds of cosymplectic space forms and prove an optimal inequality by using Gauss and Codazzi equations. In addition, we obtain two geometric inequalities for contact CR-warped product submanifolds with a compact invariant factor.
We present the first steps of a procedure which discretises surface theory in classical projective differential geometry in such a manner that underlying integrable structure is preserved. We propose a canonical frame in terms of which the associated projective Gauss-Weingarten and Gauss-Mainardi-Codazzi equations adopt compact forms. Based on a scaling symmetry which injects a parameter into the linear Gauss-Weingarten equations, we set down an algebraic classification scheme of discrete projective minimal surfaces which turns out to admit a geometric counterpart formulated in terms of discre…
The objective of this paper is to construct and investigate smooth orientable surfaces in $R^{N^2-1}$ by analytical methods. The structural equations of surfaces in connection with $CP^{N-1}$ sigma models on Minkowski space are studied in detail. This is carried out using moving frames adapted to surfaces immersed in the $su(N)$ algebra. The first and second fundamental forms of this surface as well as the relations between them as expressed in the Gauss-Weingarten and Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci equations are found. The Gaussian curvature, the mean curvature vector and the Willmore functional express…
We give a survey of the following six closely related topics: (i) a general method for constructing a soliton hierarchy from a splitting of a loop algebra into positive and negative subalgebras, together with a sequence of commuting positive elements, (ii) a method---based on (i)---for constructing soliton hierarchies from a symmetric space, (iii) the dressing action of the negative loop subgroup on the space of solutions of the related soliton equation, (iv) classical Bäcklund, Christoffel, Lie, and Ribaucour transformations for surfaces in three-space and their relation to dressing actions, …
This thesis mainly treats two developments of the classical theory of hypersurfaces inside pseudo-Riemannian space forms. The former - a joint work with Francesco Bonsante - consists in the study of immersions of smooth manifolds into holomorphic Riemannian space forms of constant curvature -1 (including SL(2,C) with a multiple of its Killing form): this leads to a Gauss-Codazzi theorem, it suggests an approach to holomorphic transitioning of immersions into pseudo-Riemannian space forms, a trick to construct holomorphic maps into the PSL(2,C)-character variety, and leads to a restatement of B…
We use techniques based on the splitting tensor to explicitly integrate the Codazzi equation along the relative nullity distribution and express the second fundamental form in terms of the Jacobi tensor of the ambient space. This approach allows us to easily recover several important results in the literature on complete submanifolds with relative nullity of the sphere as well as derive new strong consequences in hyperbolic and Euclidean spaces. Among the consequences of our main theorem are results on submanifolds with sufficiently high index of relative nullity, submanifolds with nonpositive…
In this work, we are interested in the differential geometry of surfaces in simply isotropic $\mathbb{I}^3$ and pseudo-isotropic $\mathbb{I}_{\mathrm{p}}^3$ spaces, which consists of the study of $\mathbb{R}^3$ equipped with a degenerate metric such as $\mathrm{d}s^2=\mathrm{d}x^2\pm\mathrm{d}y^2$. The investigation is based on previous results in the simply isotropic space [B. Pavković, Glas. Mat. Ser. III $\mathbf{15}$, 149 (1980); Rad JAZU $\mathbf{450}$, 129 (1990)], which point to the possibility of introducing an isotropic Gauss map taking values on a unit sphere of parabolic type and of…
There is a hierarchy of commuting soliton equations associated to each symmetric space U/K. When U/K has rank n, the first n flows in the hierarchy give rise to a natural first order non-linear system of partial diffferential equations in n variables, the so called U/K-system. Let G_{m,n} denote the Grassmannian of n-dimensional linear subspaces in R^{m+n}, and G_{m,n}^1 the Grassmannian of space like m-dimensional linear subspaces in the Lorentzian space R^{m+n,1}. In this paper, we use techniques from soliton theory to study submanifolds in space forms whose Gauss-Codazzi equations are gauge…
It has been shown in by Huang-Lucia-Tarantello [17] that, for given $\vert c \vert <1$, the moduli space of constant mean curvature (CMC) $c$-immersions of a closed orientable surface of genus $\mathfrak{g} \geq 2$ into a hyperbolic $3$-manifold can be parametrized by elements of the tangent bundle of the corresponding Teichmüller space. This is attained by showing the unique solvability of the Gauss-Codazzi equations governing (CMC) c-immersions. The corresponding unique solution is identified as the global minimum (and only critical point) of the Donaldson functional $D_t$ (introduced in [11…
We consider a prototypical "stretching plus bending" functional of an elastic shell. The shell is modeled as a d-dimensional Riemannian manifold endowed, in addition to the metric, with a reference second fundamental form. The shell is immersed into a (d+1)-dimensional ambient space, and the elastic energy accounts for deviations of the induced metric and second fundamental forms from their reference values. Under the assumption that the ambient space is of constant sectional curvature, we prove that any sequence of immersions of asymptotically vanishing energy converges to an isometric immers…
We study the uniqueness of generalized $p$-minimal surfaces in the Heisenberg group. The generalized $p$-area of a graph defined by $u$ reads $\int |\nabla u+\vec{F}| + Hu$. If $u$ and $v$ are two minimizers for the generalized $p$-area satisfying the same Dirichlet boundary condition, then we can only get $N_{\vec{F}}(u)$ $=$ $N_{\vec{F}}(v)$ (on the nonsingular set) where $N_{\vec{F}}(w)$ $:=$ $\frac{\nabla w+\vec{F}}{|\nabla w+\vec{F}|}.$ To conclude $u$ $=$ $v$ (or $\nabla u$ $=$ $\nabla v)$, it is not straightforward as in the Riemannian case, but requires some special argument in general…
Let $σ$ be an involution of a real semi-simple Lie group $U$, $U_0$ the subgroup fixed by $σ$, and $U/U_0$ the corresponding symmetric space. Ferus and Pedit called a submanifold $M$ of a rank $r$ symmetric space $U/U_0$ a {\it curved flat} if $T_pM$ is tangent to an $r$-dimensional flat of $U/U_0$ at $p$ for each $p\in M$. They noted that the equation for curved flats is an integrable system. Bryant used the involution $σ$ to construct an involutive exterior differential system $\ci_σ$ such that integral submanifolds of $\ci_σ$ are curved flats. Terng used $r$ first flows in the $U/U_0$-hiera…
