We study the clustering properties of barred galaxies using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We compute projected redshift-space two-point cross-correlation functions w_p(r_p) for a sample of nearly 1000 galaxies for which we have performed detailed structural decompositions using the methods described in Gadotti (2009). The sample includes 286 barred galaxies. The clustering of barred and unbarred galaxies of similar stellar mass is indistinguishable over all the scales probed (~20kpc - 30Mpc). This result also holds even if the sample is restricted to bars with bluer g-i colours (and hence younger ages). Our result also does not change if we split our sample of barred galaxies according to bar-to-total luminosity ratio, bar boxyness, effective surface brightness, length, or the shape of the surface density profile within the bar. There is a hint that red, elliptical bars are more strongly clustered than red and less elliptical bars, on scales >~ 1 Mpc, although the statistical significance is not high. We conclude that there is no significant evidence that bars are a product of mergers or interactions. We tentatively interpret the stronger clustering of the more elliptical bars as evidence that they are located in older galaxies, which reside in more massive haloes.
Multi-Wavelength Properties of Barred Galaxies in the Local Universe: Environment and evolution across the Hubble sequence
The epochs of cosmic dawn and reionisation present promising avenues for understanding the role of dark matter (DM) in our cosmos. The first galaxies that populated the Universe during these eras resided in DM halos that were much less massive than their counterparts today. Consequently, observations of such galaxies can provide us with a handle on the clustering of DM in an otherwise currently inaccessible regime. In this work, we use high-redshift UV galaxy luminosity-function (UV LF) data from the Hubble Space Telescope to study the clustering properties of DM at small scales. In particular…
Cosmological $N$-body simulations of the dark matter component of the universe typically use initial conditions with a fixed power spectrum and random phases of the density field, leading to structure consistent with the local distribution of galaxies only in a statistical sense. It is, however, possible to infer the initial phases which lead to the configuration of galaxies and clusters that we see around us. We analyse the CSiBORG suite of 101 simulations, formed by constraining the density field within 155 Mpc$/h$ with dark matter particle mass $4.38\times10^9 M_\odot$, to quantify the degr…
Massive, red galaxies in a hierarchical universe-II Clustering of Extremely Red Objects
We investigate the formation, gravitational clustering and interactions of solitons in a self-interacting, non-relativistic scalar field in an expanding universe. Rapid formation of large number of solitons is driven by attractive self-interactions of the field, whereas the slower clustering of solitons is driven by gravitational forces. Driven closer together by gravity, we see a rich plethora of dynamics in the soliton "gas" including mergers, scatterings and formation of soliton binaries. The numerical simulations are complemented by analytic calculations and estimates of (i) the relevant i…

The Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) scale in the clustering of galaxies is a powerful standard ruler to measure cosmological distances and determine the geometry of the Universe. Past surveys have detected the BAO feature in the clustering of different galaxy samples, most of them composed of redder, quiescent galaxies and bluer, star-forming ones out to redshift $z\sim1$. Besides these targets, new upcoming surveys will observe high-redshift galaxies with bright nebular emission lines out to $z\sim2$, quasars and Lyman-$α$ quasars at $z\gt 2$. All these different galaxy targets will be used…
We present measurements of the clustering of galaxies as a function of their stellar mass in the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey. We compare the clustering of samples using 12 different methods for estimating stellar mass, isolating the method that has the smallest scatter at fixed halo mass. In this test, the stellar mass estimate with the smallest errors yields the highest amplitude of clustering at fixed number density. We find that the PCA stellar masses of Chen etal (2012) clearly have the tightest correlation with halo mass. The PCA masses use the full galaxy spectrum, differenti…
The Hercules-Corona Borealis Great Wall is a statistically significant clustering of gamma-ray bursts around redshift 2. Motivated by recent theoretical results indicating that a maximal Universal structure size may indeed coincide with its estimated size (2-3Gpc), we reexamine the question of this Great Wall's existence from both observational and theoretical perspectives. Our statistical analyses confirm the clustering's presence in the most reliable data set currently available, and we present a video showing what this data set looks like in~3D. Cosmological explanations (i.e. having to do …
We analyse the clustering of cosmic voids using a numerical simulation and the main galaxy sample from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We take into account the classification of voids into two types that resemble different evolutionary modes: those with a rising integrated density profile (void-in-void mode, or R-type) and voids with shells (void-in-cloud mode, or S-type). The results show that voids of the same type have stronger clustering than the full sample. We use the correlation analysis to define void clumps, associations with at least two voids separated by a distance of at most the mea…
Primordial black holes (PBHs) have been brought back into the spotlight by LIGO's first direct detection of a binary-black-hole merger. One of the poorly understood properties of PBHs is how clustered they are at formation. It has important implications on the efficacy of their merging in the early Universe, as well as on observational constraints. In this work we study the initial clustering of PBHs formed from the gravitational collapse of large density fluctuations in the early Universe. We give a simple and general argument showing that, in this scenario, we do not expect clustering on ver…
The Standard Cosmological Model predicts the existence of relic neutrinos, which are indirectly probed through the effective number of relativistic species in the early Universe. In addition, from neutrino flavour oscillations we know that at least two of the neutrino mass states have a non-zero mass. Since the expansion of the Universe has diluted the energy of relic neutrinos, those that are massive are also non relativistic today. This means that they can be trapped in strong gravitational potentials, such as the one of the Milky Way. We review the calculation of the local overdensity of re…
Studies of disordered heterogeneous media and galaxy cosmology share a common goal: analyzing the distribution of particles at `microscales' to predict physical properties at `macroscales', whether for a liquid, composite material, or entire Universe. The former theory provides an array of techniques to characterize a wide class of microstructures; in this work, we apply them to the distributions of galaxies. We focus on the lower-order correlation functions, `void' and `particle' nearest-neighbor functions, pair-connectedness functions, percolation properties, and a scalar order metric. Compa…
Based on thermodynamics, we study the galactic clustering of an expanding Universe by considering the logarithmic and volume (quantum) corrections to Newton's law along with the repulsive effect of a harmonic force induced by the cosmological constant ($Λ$) in the formation of the large scale structure of the Universe. We derive the $N$-body partition function for extended-mass galaxies (galaxies with halos) analytically. For this partition function, we compute the exact equations of states, which exhibit the logarithmic, volume and cosmological constant corrections. In this setting, a modifie…
The Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) refer to the ripples of material density in the Universe. As the most direct density tracers in the universe, galaxies have been commonly used in studies of BAO peak detection. The spatial number density of galaxies, to a certain extent, reflects the distribution of the material density of our Universe. Using galaxies as matter tracers, we can construct more overlapping empty spheres (DT voids) than the matter tracers, via Delaunay Triangulation technique. We show that their radii excellently reflect the galaxy number density round them, and they can serv…
Combining different observational probes, such as galaxy clustering and weak lensing, is a promising technique for unveiling the physics of the Universe with upcoming dark energy experiments. Whilst this strategy significantly improves parameter constraints, decreasing the degeneracies of individual analyses and controlling the systematics, processing data from tens of millions of galaxies is not a trivial task. In this work we derive and test a new estimator for joint clustering and lensing data analysis, maximising the scientific return and decreasing the computational cost. Our estimator co…
The spatial distribution of neutral hydrogen (HI) in the Universe contains a wealth of cosmological information. The 21 cm emission line can be used to map the HI up to very high redshift and therefore reveal us something about the evolution of the large scale structures in the Universe. However little is known about the abundance and clustering properties of the HI over cosmic time. Motivated by this, we build an analytic framework where the relevant parameters that govern how the HI is distributed among dark matter halos can be fixed using observations. At the same time we provide tools to s…
Based on thermodynamics, we discuss the galactic clustering of expanding Universe by assuming the gravitational interaction through the modified Newton's potential given by $f(R)$ gravity. We compute the corrected $N$-particle partition function analytically. The corrected partition function leads to more exact equations of states of the system. By assuming that system follows quasi-equilibrium, we derive the exact distribution function which exhibits the $f(R)$ correction. Moreover, we evaluate the critical temperature and discuss the stability of the system. We observe the effects of correct…
