Directed covers of finite graphs are also known as periodic trees or trees with finitely many cone types. We expand the existing theory of directed covers of finite graphs to those of infinite graphs. While the lower growth rate still equals the branching number, upper and lower growth rates do not longer coincide in general. Furthermore, the behaviour of random walks on directed covers of infinite graphs is more subtle. We provide a classification in terms of recurrence and transience and point out that the critical random walk may be recurrent or transient. Our proof is based on the observation that recurrence of the random walk is equivalent to the almost sure extinction of an appropriate branching process. Two examples in random environment are provided: homesick random walk on infinite percolation clusters and random walk in random environment on directed covers. Furthermore, we calculate, under reasonable assumptions, the rate of escape with respect to suitable length functions and prove the existence of the asymptotic entropy providing an explicit formula which is also a new result for directed covers of finite graphs. In particular, the asymptotic entropy of random walks on directed covers of finite graphs is positive if and only if the random walk is transient.
We prove a conjecture of Toth and Veto about the weak convergence of the self repelling random walk with directed edges under diffusive scaling to a uniform distribution.
The Martin boundary associated with the simple random walk on an example of partially oriented lattice is shown to be trivial by computing fine estimates of the Green kernel.
We study the persistence exponent for random walks in random sceneries (RWRS) with integer values and for some special random walks in random environment in $\mathbb Z^2$ including random walks in $\mathbb Z^2$ with random orientations of the horizontal layers.
A necessary and sufficient condition for a random walk in a finite directed graph subject to a road coloring to be measurable with respect to the driving random road colors is proved to be that the road coloring is synchronizing. For this, the random walk subject to a non-synchronizing road coloring is proved to have uniform law on a certain partition of the state space.
A constructive proof is given to the fact that any ergodic Markov chain can be realized as a random walk subject to a synchronizing road coloring. Redundancy (ratio of extra entropy) in such a realization is also studied.
In this note, we study the Martin boundary of the simple random walk on an example of directed graph. More precisely, the Martin boundary is shown to be trivial, i.e. there is no non-constant positive harmonic functions. The proof involves fine estimates of the Green function which are summarized in this note.
We consider a directed random walk on the backbone of the supercritical oriented percolation cluster in dimensions $d+1$ with $d \ge 3$ being the spatial dimension. For this random walk we prove an annealed local central limit theorem and a quenched local limit theorem. The latter shows that the quenched transition probabilities of the random walk converge to the annealed transition probabilities reweighted by a function of the medium centred at the target site. This function is the density of the unique measure which is invariant for the point of view of the particle, is absolutely continuous…
We consider a directed random walk on the backbone of the infinite cluster generated by supercritical oriented percolation, or equivalently the space-time embedding of the ``ancestral lineage'' of an individual in the stationary discrete-time contact process. We prove a law of large numbers and an annealed central limit theorem (i.e., averaged over the realisations of the cluster) using a regeneration approach. Furthermore, we obtain a quenched central limit theorem (i.e.\ for almost any realisation of the cluster) via an analysis of joint renewals of two independent walks on the same cluster.
In the present paper, we investigate the collapsed phase of the interacting partially-directed self-avoiding walk (IPDSAW) that was introduced in Zwanzig and Lauritzen (1968). We provide sharp asymptotics of the partition function inside the collapsed phase, proving rigorously a conjecture formulated in Guttmann (2015) and Owczarek et al. (1993). As a by-product of our result, we obtain that, inside the collapsed phase, a typical IPDSAW trajectory is made of a unique macroscopic bead, consisting of a concatenation of long vertical stretches of alternating signs, outside which only finitely man…
We consider a variant of self-repelling random walk on the integer lattice Z where the self-repellence is defined in terms of the local time on oriented edges. The long-time asymptotic scaling of this walk is surprisingly different from the asymptotics of the similar process with self-repellence defined in terms of local time on unoriented edges. We prove limit theorems for the local time process and for the position of the random walker. The main ingredient is a Ray-Knight-type of approach. At the end of the paper, we also present some computer simulations which show the strange scaling behav…
We establish a second-order almost sure limit theorem for the minimal position in a one-dimensional super-critical branching random walk, and also prove a martingale convergence theorem which answers a question of Biggins and Kyprianou [9]. Our method applies furthermore to the study of directed polymers on a disordered tree. In particular, we give a rigorous proof of a phase transition phenomenon for the partition function (from the point of view of convergence in probability), already described by Derrida and Spohn [17]. Surprisingly, this phase transition phenomenon disappears in the sense …
We define here a \textit{directed edge reinforced random walk} on a connected locally finite graph. As the name suggests, this walk keeps track of its past, and gives a bias towards directed edges previously crossed proportional to the exponential of the number of crossings. The model is inspired by the so called \textit{Ant Mill phenomenon}, in which a group of army ants forms a continuously rotating circle until they die of exhaustion. For that reason we refer to the walk defined in this work as the \textit{Ant RW}. Our main result justifies this name. Namely, we will show that on any finite…
In the present work, we investigate the case of Directed Polymer in a Random Environment (DPRE), when the increments of the random walk are heavy-tailed with tail-exponent equal to zero ($\mathbf{P}[|X_1|\geq n]$ decays slower than any power of $n$). This case has not yet been studied in the context of directed polymers and present key differences with the simple symmetric random walk case and the cases where the increments belong to the domain of attraction of an $α$-stable law, where $α\in (0, 2]$. We establish the absence of a very strong disorder regime - that is, the free energy equals ze…
We consider the backbone of the infinite cluster generated by supercritical oriented site percolation in dimension 1 +1. A directed random walk on this backbone can be seen as an "ancestral line" of an individual sampled in the stationary discrete-time contact process. Such ancestral lineages were investigated in [BCDG13] where a central limit theorem for a single walker was proved. Here, we consider infinitely many coalescing walkers on the same backbone starting at each space-time point. We show that, after diffusive rescaling, the collection of paths converges in distribution to the Brownia…
We consider a directed polymer model in dimension $1+1$, where the disorder is given by the occupation field of a Poisson system of independent random walks on $\mathbb Z$. In a suitable continuum and weak disorder limit, we show that the family of quenched partition functions of the directed polymer converges to the Stratonovich solution of a multiplicative stochastic heat equation (SHE) with a Gaussian noise, whose space-time covariance is given by the heat kernel. In contrast to the case with space-time white noise where the solution of the SHE admits a Wiener-Itô chaos expansion, we establ…
We study the directed polymer model for general graphs (beyond $\mathbb Z^d$) and random walks. We provide sufficient conditions for the existence or non-existence of a weak disorder phase, of an $L^2$ region, and of very strong disorder, in terms of properties of the graph and of the random walk. We study in some detail (biased) random walk on various trees including the Galton Watson trees, and provide a range of other examples that illustrate counter-examples to intuitive extensions of the $\mathbb Z^d$/SRW result.
In this paper, we investigate a model for a $1+1$ dimensional self-interacting and partially directed self-avoiding walk, usually referred to by the acronym IPDSAW. The interaction intensity and the free energy of the system are denoted by $β$ and $f$, respectively. The IPDSAW is known to undergo a collapse transition at $β_c$. We provide the precise asymptotic of the free energy close to criticality, that is we show that $f(β_c-ε)\sim γε^{3/2}$ where $γ$ is computed explicitly and interpreted in terms of an associated continuous model. We also establish some path properties of the random walk…
We study the Cauchy directed polymer model on $\mathbb{Z}^{1+1}$, where the underlying random walk is in the domain of attraction to the $1$-stable law. We show that, if the random walk satisfies certain regularity assumptions and its symmetrized version is recurrent, then the free energy is strictly negative at any inverse temperature $β>0$. Moreover, under additional regularity assumptions on the random walk, we can identify the sharp asymptotics of the free energy in the high temperature limit, namely, \begin{equation*} \lim\limits_{β\to0}β^{2}\log(-p(β))=-c. \end{equation*}
We consider one-dependent random walks on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ in random hypergeometric environment for $d\ge 3$. These are memory-one walks in a large class of environments parameterized by positive weights on directed edges and on pairs of directed edges which includes the class of Dirichlet environments as a special case. We show that the walk is a.s. transient for any choice of the parameters, and moreover that the return time has some finite positive moment. We then give a characterization for the existence of an invariant measure for the process from the point of view of the walker which is ab…
We show bounds on total variation and $L^{\infty}$ mixing times, spectral gap and magnitudes of the complex valued eigenvalues of a general (non-reversible non-lazy) Markov chain with a minor expansion property. This leads to the first known bounds for the non-lazy simple and max-degree walks on a (directed) graph, and even in the lazy case they are the first bounds of the optimal order. In particular, it is found that within a factor of two or four, the worst case of each of these mixing time and eigenvalue quantities is a walk on a cycle with clockwise drift.
We review some recent results obtained in the framework of the 2-dimensional Interacting Self-Avoiding Walk (ISAW). After a brief presentation of the rigorous results that have been obtained so far for ISAW we focus on the Interacting Partially Directed Self-Avoiding Walk (IPDSAW), a model introduced in Zwanzig and Lauritzen (1968) to decrease the mathematical complexity of ISAW. In the first part of the paper, we discuss how a new probabilistic approach based on a random walk representation (see Nguyen and Pétrélis (2013)) allowed for a sharp determination of the asymptotics of the free energ…

We examine the stationary distribution of random walks on directed graphs. In particular, we focus on the {\em principal ratio}, which is the ratio of maximum to minimum values of vertices in the stationary distribution. We give an upper bound for this ratio over all strongly connected graphs on $n$ vertices. We characterize all graphs achieving the upper bound and we give explicit constructions for these extremal graphs. Additionally, we show that under certain conditions, the principal ratio is tightly bounded. We also provide counterexamples to show the principal ratio cannot be tightly bou…
The aim of this note is to extend the result of Angel and Holroyd concerning the transience and the recurrence of transfinite rotor-router walks, for random initial configuration of rotors on homogeneous trees. We address the same question on directed covers of finite graphs, which are also called trees with finitely many cone types or periodic trees. Furthermore, we provide an example of a directed cover such that the rotor-router walk can be either recurrent or transient, depending only on the planar embedding of the periodic tree.
Techniques of `dynamic renormalization', developed earlier for undirected percolation and the contact model, are adapted to the setting of directed percolation, thereby obtaining solutions of several problems for directed percolation on $Z^d$ where $d \ge 2$. The first new result is a type of uniqueness theorem: for every pair $x$ and $y$ of vertices which lie in infinite open paths, there exists almost surely a third vertex $z$ which is joined to infinity and which is attainable from $x$ and $y$ along directed open paths. Secondly, it is proved that a random walk on an infinite directed clust…
Simple random walks on a partially directed version of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ are considered. More precisely, vertical edges between neighbouring vertices of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ can be traversed in both directions (they are undirected) while horizontal edges are one-way. The horizontal orientation is prescribed by a random perturbation of a periodic function, the perturbation probability decays according to a power law in the absolute value of the ordinate. We study the type of the simple random walk, i.e.\ its being recurrent or transient, and show that there exists a critical value of the decay power, ab…
Directed polymers in random environment have usually been constructed with a simple random walk on the integer lattice. It has been observed before that several standard results for this model continue to hold for a more general reference walk. Some finer results are known for the so-called long-range directed polymer in which the reference walk lies in the domain of attraction of an $α$-stable process. In this note, low-temperature localization properties recently proved for the classical case are shown to be true with any reference walk. First, it is proved that the polymer's endpoint distri…
We prove a shape theorem and derive a variational formula for the limiting quenched Lyapunov exponent and the Green's function of random walk in a random potential on a square lattice of arbitrary dimension and with an arbitrary finite set of steps. The potential is a function of a stationary environment and the step of the walk. This potential is subject to a moment assumption whose strictness is tied to the mixing of the environment. Our setting includes directed and undirected polymers, random walk in static and dynamic random environment, and, when the temperature is taken to zero, our res…
We consider the hierarchic tree Random Energy Model with continuous branching and calculate the moments of the corresponding partition function. We establish the multifractal properties of those moments. We derive formulas for the normal distribution of random variables, as well as for the general case. We compare our results for the moments of partition function with corresponding results of logarithmic 1-d REM and conjecture a specific power-law tail for the partition function distribution in the high-temperature phase. Our results establish a connection between reaction-diffusion equations …
We show that the endpoint large deviation rate function for a continuous-time directed polymer agrees with the rate function of the underlying random walk near the origin in the whole weak disorder phase.
This paper is dedicated to the investigation of a $1+1$ dimensional self-interacting and partially directed self-avoiding walk, usually referred to by the acronym IPDSAW and introduced in \cite{ZL68} by Zwanzig and Lauritzen to study the collapse transition of an homopolymer dipped in a poor solvant. In \cite{POBG93}, physicists displayed numerical results concerning the typical growth rate of some geometric features of the path as its length $L$ diverges. From this perspective the quantities of interest are the projections of the path onto the horizontal axis (also called horizontal extension…
We consider random walk on the structure given by a random hypergraph in the regime where there is a unique giant component. We give the asymptotics for hitting times, cover times, and commute times and show that the results obtained for random walk on random graphs are universal.
In this paper, we study the time required for a λ-biased (λ>1) walk to visit all the vertices of a supercritical Galton-Watson tree up to generation n. Inspired by the extremal landscape approach in [Cortines, Louidor, Saglietti 2018] for the simple random walk on binary trees, we establish the scaling limit of the cover time in the biased setting.
We examine the sets of late points of a symmetric random walk on $Z^2$ projected onto the torus $Z^2_K$, culminating in a limit theorem for the cover time of the toral random walk. This extends the work done for the simple random walk in Dembo, et al. (2006) to a large class of random walks projected onto the lattice torus. The approach uses comparisons between planar and toral hitting times and distributions on annuli, and uses only random walk methods.
In this article we study a \emph{non-directed} polymer model in dimension $d\ge 2$: we consider a simple symmetric random walk on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ which interacts with a random environment, represented by i.i.d. random variables $(ω_x)_{x\in \mathbb{Z}^d}$. The model consists in modifying the law of the random walk up to time (or length) $N$ by the exponential of $\sum_{x\in \mathcal{R}_N}β(ω_x-h)$ where $\mathcal{R}_N$ is the range of the walk, \textit{i.e.} the set of visited sites up to time $N$, and $β\geq 0,\, h\in \mathbb{R}$ are two parameters. We study the behavior of the model in a weak…
We study the asymptotic behavior of the simple random walk on oriented version of $\mathbb{Z}^2$. The considered latticesare not directed on the vertical axis but unidirectional on the horizontal one, with symmetric random orientations which are positively correlated. We prove that the simple random walk is transient and also prove a functionnal limit theorem in the space of cadlag functions, with an unconventional normalization.
We give two variational formulas (qVar1) and (qVar2) for the quenched free energy of a random walk in random potential (RWRP) when (i) the underlying walk is directed or undirected, (ii) the environment is stationary and ergodic, and (iii) the potential is allowed to depend on the next step of the walk which covers random walk in random environment (RWRE). In the directed i.i.d. case, we also give two variational formulas (aVar1) and (aVar2) for the annealed free energy of RWRP. These four formulas are the same except that they involve infima over different sets, and the first two are modified…
A mixing Markov chain is proved to be realized as a random walk in a directed graph subject to a synchronizing road coloring. The result ensures existence of appropriate random mappings in Propp--Wilson's coupling from the past. The proof is based on the road coloring theorem. A necessary and sufficient condition for approximate preservation of entropies is also given.
Let $T_n$ denote the binary tree of depth $n$ augmented by an extra edge connected to its root. Let $C_n$ denote the cover time of $T_n$ by simple random walk. We prove that $\sqrt{ \mathcal{C}_{n} 2^{-(n+1) } } - m_n$ converges in distribution as $n\to \infty$, where $m_n$ is an explicit constant, and identify the limit.
We consider the cover time for a simple random walk on the two-dimensional discrete torus of side length $n$. Dembo, Peres, Rosen, and Zeitouni [Ann. Math. 160:433-464, 2004] identified the leading term in the asymptotics for the cover time as $n$ goes to infinity. In this paper, we study the exact second order term. This is a discrete analogue of the work on the cover time for planar Brownian motion by Belius and Kistler [Probab. Theory Relat Fields. 167:461-552, 2017].
We consider $(1+1)$-dimensional directed polymers in a random potential and provide sufficient conditions guaranteeing joint localization. Joint localization means that for typical realizations of the environment, and for polymers started at different starting points, all the associated endpoint distributions localize in a common random region that does not grow with the length of the polymer. In particular, we prove that joint localization holds when the reference random walk of the polymer model is either a simple symmetric lattice walk or a Gaussian random walk. We also prove that the very …
Random walks on general graphs play an important role in the understanding of the general theory of stochastic processes. Beyond their fundamental interest in probability theory, they arise also as simple models of physical systems. A brief survey of the physical relevance of the notion of random walk on both undirected and directed graphs is given followed by the exposition of some recent results on random walks on randomly oriented lattices. It is worth noticing that general undirected graphs are associated with (not necessarily Abelian) groups while directed graphs are associated with (not …
For a shift-invariant weighted directed graph with vertex set $\mathbb{Z}$, we examine the minimal weight $κ_0$ exiting a finite, strongly connected set of vertices. Although $κ_0$ is defined as an infimum, it has been shown that the infimum is always attained by an actual set of vertices. We show that for each underlying directed graph (prior to assignment of the weights), there is a formula for $κ_0$ as a minimum of finitely many integer combinations of the edge weights. We find this formula for several different directed graphs. Motivation for this problem comes from random walks in Dirichl…
In the randomly-oriented Manhattan lattice, every line in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ is assigned a uniform random direction. We consider the directed graph whose vertex set is $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and whose edges connect nearest neighbours, but only in the direction fixed by the line orientations. Random walk on this directed graph chooses uniformly from the $d$ legal neighbours at each step. We prove that this walk is superdiffusive in two and three dimensions. The model is diffusive in four and more dimensions.
We consider directed polymer models involving multiple non-intersecting random walks moving through a space-time disordered environment in one spatial dimension. For a single random walk, Alberts, Khanin and Quastel proved that under intermediate disorder scaling (in which time and space are scaled diffusively, and the strength of the environment is scaled to zero in a critical manner) the polymer partition function converges to the solution to the stochastic heat equation with multiplicative white noise. In this paper we prove the analogous result for multiple non-intersecting random walks st…
The food web is a directed graph in which nodes label species and directed links represent the predation between species. The cascade model generates random food webs. The continuum cascade model is a Poisson approximation of the cascade model. The recursion to obtain the probability distribution of the longest chain length generated by the continuum cascade model has the solution with traveling wave. We consider a branching random walk to study the asymptotic probability on the position of wave front.
Consider $n$ points independently sampled from a density $p$ of class $\mathcal{C}^2$ on a smooth compact $d$-dimensional sub-manifold $\mathcal{M}$ of $\mathbb{R}^m$, and consider the generator of a random walk visiting these points according to a transition kernel $K$. We study the almost sure uniform convergence of this operator to the diffusive Laplace-Beltrami operator when $n$ tends to infinity. This work extends known results of the past 15 years. In particular, our result does not require the kernel $K$ to be continuous, which covers the cases of walks exploring $k$NN-random and geomet…
We analyze the covertime of a biased random walk on the random graph $G_{n,p}$. The walk is biased towards visiting vertices of low degree and this makes the covertime less than in the unbiased case
In this paper we study the probability that a $d$ dimensional simple random walk (or the first $L$ steps of it) covers each point in a nearest neighbor path connecting 0 and the boundary of an $L_1$ ball. We show that among all such paths, the one that maximizes the covering probability is the monotonic increasing one that stays within distance 1 from the diagonal. As a result, we can obtain an exponential upper bound on the decaying rate of covering probability of any such path when $d\ge 4$.
The problem of decomposing networks into modules (or clusters) has gained much attention in recent years, as it can account for a coarse-grained description of complex systems, often revealing functional subunits of these systems. A variety of module detection algorithms have been proposed, mostly oriented towards finding hard partitionings of undirected networks. Despite the increasing number of fuzzy clustering methods for directed networks, many of these approaches tend to neglect important directional information. In this paper, we present a novel random walk based approach for finding fuz…
