We consider the cover time for a simple random walk on the two-dimensional discrete torus of side length $n$. Dembo, Peres, Rosen, and Zeitouni [Ann. Math. 160:433-464, 2004] identified the leading term in the asymptotics for the cover time as $n$ goes to infinity. In this paper, we study the exact second order term. This is a discrete analogue of the work on the cover time for planar Brownian motion by Belius and Kistler [Probab. Theory Relat Fields. 167:461-552, 2017].
We study the simple random walk on stochastic hyperbolic half planar triangulations constructed in Angel and Ray [3]. We show that almost surely the walker escapes the boundary of the map in positive speed and that the return probability to the starting point after n steps scales like $\exp(-cn^{1/3})$.
We examine escape and entrance times, Green's functions, local times, and hitting distributions of discs and annuli of a symmetric random walk on $\Z^2$ projected onto the periodic lattice $\Z^2_K$. This extends a framework for the simple planar random walk in Dembo, et al. (2006) to the large class of planar random walks in Bass, Rosen (2007). The approach uses comparisons between $\Z^2$ and $\Z^2_K$ hitting times and distributions on annuli, and uses only random walk methods.
We prove that the local time process of a planar simple random walk, when time is scaled logarithmically, converges to a non-degenerate pure jump process. The convergence takes place in the Skorokhod space with respect to the $M1$ topology and fails to hold in the $J1$ topology.
We examine the sets of late points of a symmetric random walk on $Z^2$ projected onto the torus $Z^2_K$, culminating in a limit theorem for the cover time of the toral random walk. This extends the work done for the simple random walk in Dembo, et al. (2006) to a large class of random walks projected onto the lattice torus. The approach uses comparisons between planar and toral hitting times and distributions on annuli, and uses only random walk methods.
In this paper, we investigate the properties of recurrent planar Markov random walks. More precisely, we study the set of recurrent points with the use of local limit theorems. The Nagaev-Guivarc'h spectral method provides several examples for which these local limit theorems are satisfied as soon as the (standard or non-standard) central limit theorem holds.
Given a symmetric random walk in $Z^2$ with finite second moments, let $R_n$ be the range of the random walk up to time $n$. We study moderate deviations for $R_n -E R_n$ and $E R_n -R_n$. We also derive the corresponding laws of the iterated logarithm.
We consider a random walk in the plane which takes steps uniformly distributed on the unit circle centered around the walker's current position but avoids the convex hull of its past positions. This model has been introduced by Angel, Benjamini and Virag. We show a large deviation estimate for the distance of the walker from the origin, which implies that the walker has positive lim inf speed.
We give Harnack inequalities for the hitting distributions of a large family of symmetric random walks on $\Z^2$, and their projections onto the lattice torus $\Z^2_K$. This extends a framework for the simple random walk in Dembo, et al. (2006), and generalizes the results in Bass, Rosen (2007) to the toral projection.
We give a new proof of a result of Kenyon that the growth exponent for loop-erased random walks in two dimensions is 5/4. The proof uses the convergence of LERW to Schramm-Loewner evolution with parameter 2, and is valid for irreducible bounded symmetric random walks on any two-dimensional discrete lattice.
We study the pioneer points of the simple random walk on the uniform infinite planar quadrangulation (UIPQ) using an adaptation of the peeling procedure of Angel to the quadrangulation case. Our main result is that, up to polylogarithmic factors, $n^3$ pioneer points have been discovered before the walk exits the ball of radius $n$ in the UIPQ. As a result we verify the KPZ relation in the particular case of the pioneer exponent and prove that the walk is subdiffusive with exponent less than 1/3. Along the way, new geometric controls on the UIPQ are established.
In this paper we consider the natural random walk on a planar graph and scale it by a small positive number $δ$. Given a simply connected domain $D$ and its two boundary points $a$ and $b$, we start the scaled walk at a vertex of the graph nearby $a$ and condition it on its exiting $D$ through a vertex nearby $b$, and prove that the loop erasure of the conditioned walk converges, as $δ\downarrow 0$, to the chordal SLE$_{2}$ that connects $a$ and $b$ in $D$, provided that an invariance principle is valid for both the random walk and the dual walk of it.
Let B_n be the number of self-intersections of a symmetric random walk with finite second moments in the integer planar lattice. We obtain moderate deviation estimates for B_n - E B_n and E B_n- B_n, which are given in terms of the best constant of a certain Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality. We also prove the corresponding laws of the iterated logarithm.
We give a new proof of a result of Rick Kenyon that the probability that an edge in the middle of an n x n square is used in a loop-erased walk connecting opposites sides is of order n^{-3/4}. We, in fact, improve the result by showing that this estimate is correct up to multiplicative constants.
In this note we present a simplified proof of the zero-one law by Merkl and Zerner (2001) for directional transience of random walks in i.i.d. random environments (RWRE) on the square lattice. Also, we indicate how to construct a two-dimensional counterexample in a non-uniformly elliptic and stationary environment which has better ergodic properties than the example given by Merkl and Zerner.
We consider an i.i.d. random environment with a strong form of transience on the two dimensional integer lattice. Namely, the walk always moves forward in the y-direction. We prove a functional CLT for the quenched expected position of the random walk indexed by its level crossing times. We begin with a variation of the Martingale Central Limit Theorem. The main part of the paper checks the conditions of the theorem for our problem.
The purpose of this note is to collect in one place a few results about simple random walk and Brownian motion which are often useful. These include standard results such as Beurling estimates, large deviation estimates, and a method for coupling the two processes, as well as solutions to the discrete Dirichlet problem in various domains which, to the author's knowledge, have not been published anywhere. The main focus is on the two-dimensional processes.
Let R_n be the radius of the largest disk covered after n steps of a simple random walk. We prove that almost surely limsup_{n \to \infty}(log R_n)^2/(log n log_3 n) = 1/4, where log_3 denotes 3 iterations of the log function. This is motivated by a question of Erdős and Taylor. We also obtain the analogous result for the Wiener sausage, refining a result of Meyre and Werner.
Denote by $L_n$ the length of the perimeter of the convex hull of $n$ steps of a planar random walk whose increments have finite second moment and non-zero mean. Snyder and Steele showed that $n^{-1} L_n$ converges almost surely to a deterministic limit, and proved an upper bound on the variance $Var [ L_n] = O(n)$. We show that $n^{-1} Var [L_n]$ converges and give a simple expression for the limit, which is non-zero for walks outside a certain degenerate class. This answers a question of Snyder and Steele. Furthermore, we prove a central limit theorem for $L_n$ in the non-degenerate case.
The main purpose of this work is to define planar self-intersection local time by an alternative approach which is based on an almost sure pathwise approximation of planar Brownian motion by simple, symmetric random walks. As a result, Brownian self-intersection local time is obtained as an almost sure limit of local averages of simple random walk self-intersection local times. An important tool is a discrete version of the Tanaka--Rosen--Yor formula; the continuous version of the formula is obtained as an almost sure limit of the discrete version. The author hopes that this approach to self-i…
We derive a local limit theorem for normal, moderate, and large deviations for symmetric simple random walk on the square lattice in dimensions one and two that is an improvement of existing results for points that are particularly distant from the walk's starting point. More specifically, we give explicit asymptotic expressions in terms of $n$ and $x$, where $x$ is thought of as dependent on $n$, in dimensions one and two for $P(S_n=x)$, the probability that symmetric simple random walk $S$ started at the origin is at some point $x$ at time $n$, that are valid for all $x$. We also show that t…
We study the convex hull of the first $n$ steps of a planar random walk, and present large-$n$ asymptotic results on its perimeter length $L_n$, diameter $D_n$, and shape. In the case where the walk has a non-zero mean drift, we show that $L_n / D_n \to 2$ a.s., and give distributional limit theorems and variance asymptotics for $D_n$, and in the zero-drift case we show that the convex hull is infinitely often arbitrarily well-approximated in shape by any unit-diameter compact convex set containing the origin, and then $\liminf_{n \to \infty} L_n/D_n =2$ and $\limsup_{n \to \infty} L_n /D_n = …
We initiate the study on chemical distances of percolation clusters for level sets of two-dimensional discrete Gaussian free fields as well as loop clusters generated by two-dimensional random walk loop soups. One of our results states that the chemical distance between two macroscopic annuli away from the boundary for the random walk loop soup at the critical intensity is of dimension 1 with positive probability. Our proof method is based on an interesting combination of a theorem of Makarov, isomorphism theory and an entropic repulsion estimate for Gaussian free fields in the presence of a h…
For a symmetric random walk in $Z^2$ with $2+δ$ moments, we represent $|\mathcal{R}(n)|$, the cardinality of the range, in terms of an expansion involving the renormalized intersection local times of a Brownian motion. We show that for each $k\geq 1$ \[ (\log n)^k [ \frac{1}{n} |\mathcal{R}(n)| +\sum_{j=1}^k (-1)^j (\textstyle{\frac1{2π}}\log n +c_X)^{-j} γ_{j,n}]\to 0, \qquad a.s. \] where $W_t$ is a Brownian motion, $W^{(n)}_t=W_{nt}/\sqrt n$, $γ_{j,n}$ is the renormalized intersection local time at time 1 for $W^{(n)}$, and $c_X$ is a constant depending on the distribution of the random wal…
We prove large deviations principles (LDPs) for the perimeter and the area of the convex hull of a planar random walk with finite Laplace transform of its increments. We give explicit upper and lower bounds for the rate function of the perimeter in terms of the rate function of the increments. These bounds coincide and thus give the rate function for a wide class of distributions which includes the Gaussians and the rotationally invariant ones. For random walks with such increments, large deviations of the perimeter are attained by the trajectories that asymptotically align into line segments.…
We study two variants of the notion of holes formed by planar simple random walk of time duration $2n$ and the areas associated with them. We prove in both cases that the number of holes of area greater than $A(n)$, where $\{A(n)\}$ is an increasing sequence, is, up to a logarithmic correction term, asymptotic to $n\cdot A(n)^{-1}$ for a range of large holes, thus confirming an observation by Mandelbrot. A consequence is that the largest hole has an area which is logarithmically asymptotic to $n$. We also discuss the different exponent of 5/3 observed by Mandelbrot for small holes.
We present an infinite family of finite planar graphs $\{X_n\}$ with degree at most five and such that for some constant $c > 0$, $$ λ_1(X_n) \geq c(\frac{\log \diam(X_n)}{\diam(X_n)})^2\,, $$ where $λ_1$ denotes the smallest non-zero eigenvalue of the graph Laplacian. This significantly simplifies a construction of Louder and Souto. We also remark that such a lower bound cannot hold when the diameter is replaced by the average squared distance: There exists a constant $c > 0$ such that for any family $\{X_n\}$ of planar graphs we have $$ λ_1(X_n) \leq c (\frac{1}{|X_n|^2} \sum_{x,y \in X_n} d…
We study the recurrence of inhomogeneous Markov chains in the plane, when the environment is horizontally stratified and the heterogeneity of quasi-periodic type.
For the perimeter length $L_n$ and the area $A_n$ of the convex hull of the first $n$ steps of a planar random walk, this thesis study $n \to \infty$ mean and variance asymptotics and establish distributional limits. The results apply to random walks both with drift (the mean of random walk increments) and with no drift under mild moments assumptions on the increments. Assuming increments of the random walk have finite second moment and non-zero mean, Snyder and Steele showed that $n^{-1} L_n$ converges almost surely to a deterministic limit, and proved an upper bound on the variance Var$[ L_n…
We introduce planar random walk conditioned to avoid its past convex hull, and we show that it escapes at a positive limsup speed. Experimental results show that fluctuations from a limiting direction are on the order of n^(3/4). This behavior is also observed for the extremal investor, a natural financial model related to the planar walk.
We show that the "twisted" planar random walk - which results by summing up stationary increments rotated by multiples of a fixed angle - is recurrent under diverse assumptions on the increment process. For example, if the increment process is alpha-mixing and of finite second moment, then the twisted random walk is recurrent for every angle fixed choice of the angle out of a set of full Lebesgue measure, no matter how slow the mixing coefficients decay.
We show how to compute the probabilities of various connection topologies for uniformly random spanning trees on graphs embedded in surfaces. As an application, we show how to compute the "intensity" of the loop-erased random walk in ${\mathbb Z}^2$, that is, the probability that the walk from (0,0) to infinity passes through a given vertex or edge. For example, the probability that it passes through (1,0) is 5/16; this confirms a conjecture from 1994 about the stationary sandpile density on ${\mathbb Z}^2$. We do the analogous computation for the triangular lattice, honeycomb lattice and ${\m…
This paper concerns a random walk on a planar graph and presents certain estimates concerning the harmonic measures for the walk in a grid domain which estimates are useful for showing the convergence of a LERW (loop-erased random walk) to an SLE (stochastic Loewner evolution). We assume that the walk started at a fixed vertex of the graph satisfies the invariance principle as in Yadin and Yehudayoff [16] in which the convergence of LERW to a radial SLE is established in this setting. Our main concern is chordal case, where a random walk is started at a boundary vertex of a simply connected gr…
Random walks in random sceneries (RWRS) are simple examples of stochastic processes in disordered media. They were introduced at the end of the 70's by Kesten-Spitzer and Borodin, motivated by the construction of new self-similar processes with stationary increments. Two sources of randomness enter in their definition: a random field $ξ= (ξ_x)_{x \in \Z^d}$ of i.i.d.\ random variables, which is called the \emph{random scenery}, and a random walk $S = (S_n)_{n \in \N}$ evolving in $\Z^d$, independent from the scenery. The RWRS $Z = (Z_n)_{n \in \N}$ is then defined as the accumulated scenery al…
We prove a sharp estimate on the expected value of the integral of the index of a simple random walk on the square or triangular lattice. This gives new lower bounds on the averaged Dehn function, which measures the expected area needed to fill a random curve with a disc.
A planar self-avoiding walk (SAW) is a nearest neighbor random walk path in the square lattice with no self-intersection. A planar self-avoiding polygon (SAP) is a loop with no self-intersection. In this paper we present conjectures for the scaling limit of the uniform measures on these objects. The conjectures are based on recent results on the stochastic Loewner evolution and non-disconnecting Brownian motions. New heuristic derivations are given for the critical exponents for SAWs and SAPs.
Lawler, Schramm and Werner showed that the scaling limit of the loop-erased random walk on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ is $\mathrm{SLE}_2$. We consider scaling limits of the loop-erasure of random walks on other planar graphs (graphs embedded into $\mathbb{C}$ so that edges do not cross one another). We show that if the scaling limit of the random walk is planar Brownian motion, then the scaling limit of its loop-erasure is $\mathrm{SLE}_2$. Our main contribution is showing that for such graphs, the discrete Poisson kernel can be approximated by the continuous one. One example is the infinite component of …
We consider random walk on the structure given by a random hypergraph in the regime where there is a unique giant component. We give the asymptotics for hitting times, cover times, and commute times and show that the results obtained for random walk on random graphs are universal.
Let $S_k$ be a random walk in $R^d$ such that its distribution of increments does not assign mass to hyperplanes. We study the probability $p_n$ that the convex hull $conv (S_1, \ldots , S_n)$ of the first $n$ steps of the walk does not include the origin. By providing an explicit formula, we show that for planar symmetrically distributed random walks, $p_n$ does not depend on the distribution of increments. This extends the well known result by Sparre Andersen (1949) that a one-dimensional random walk satisfying the above continuity and symmetry assumptions stays positive with a distribution-…
In this paper, we study the time required for a λ-biased (λ>1) walk to visit all the vertices of a supercritical Galton-Watson tree up to generation n. Inspired by the extremal landscape approach in [Cortines, Louidor, Saglietti 2018] for the simple random walk on binary trees, we establish the scaling limit of the cover time in the biased setting.
In this article we study the distribution of the number of points of a simple random walk, visited a given number of times (the k-multiple point range). In a previous article we had developed a graph theoretical approach which is now extended from the closed to the the non restricted walk. Based on a study of the analytic properties of the first hit determinant a general method to define and calculate the generating functions of the moments of the distribution as analytical functions and express them as an absolutely converging series of graph contributions is given. So a method to calculate t…
We obtain upper bounds for the rates of convergence for the simple random walk Green's function in the domains $D_α= D_α(n)=\{re^{iθ}\in \mathbb{C}:0 <θ<2π-α, 0<r<2n\}-z_0,$ where $z_0\in\mathbb{Z}^2$ is a point closest to $ne^{i(π-α/2)}$. The rate depends on the angle of the wedge and is what was suggested by the sharpest available results in the extreme cases $α=0$ and $α=π$. Our proof uses the KMT coupling between random walk and Brownian motion.
Directed covers of finite graphs are also known as periodic trees or trees with finitely many cone types. We expand the existing theory of directed covers of finite graphs to those of infinite graphs. While the lower growth rate still equals the branching number, upper and lower growth rates do not longer coincide in general. Furthermore, the behaviour of random walks on directed covers of infinite graphs is more subtle. We provide a classification in terms of recurrence and transience and point out that the critical random walk may be recurrent or transient. Our proof is based on the observat…
We study the random planar maps obtained from supercritical Galton--Watson trees by adding the horizontal connections between successive vertices at each level. These are the hyperbolic analog of the maps studied by Curien, Hutchcroft and Nachmias in arXiv:1710.03137, and a natural model of random hyperbolic geometry. We first establish metric hyperbolicity properties of these maps: we show that they admit bi-infinite geodesics and satisfy a weak version of Gromov-hyperbolicity. We also study the simple random walk on these maps: we identify their Poisson boundary and, in the case where the un…
We prove that a planar random walk with bounded increments and mean zero which is conditioned to stay in a cone converges weakly to the corresponding Brownian meander if and only if the tail distribution of the exit time from the cone is regularly varying. This condition is satisfied in many natural examples.
Let $T_n$ denote the binary tree of depth $n$ augmented by an extra edge connected to its root. Let $C_n$ denote the cover time of $T_n$ by simple random walk. We prove that $\sqrt{ \mathcal{C}_{n} 2^{-(n+1) } } - m_n$ converges in distribution as $n\to \infty$, where $m_n$ is an explicit constant, and identify the limit.
Consider an infinite planar graph with uniform polynomial growth of degree d > 2. Many examples of such graphs exhibit similar geometric and spectral properties, and it has been conjectured that this is necessary. We present a family of counterexamples. In particular, we show that for every rational d > 2, there is a planar graph with uniform polynomial growth of degree d on which the random walk is transient, disproving a conjecture of Benjamini (2011). By a well-known theorem of Benjamini and Schramm, such a graph cannot be a unimodular random graph. We also give examples of unimodular rando…
We prove that the simple random walk on the uniform infinite planar triangulation (UIPT) typically travels graph distance at most $n^{1/4 + o_n(1)}$ in $n$ units of time. Together with the complementary lower bound proven by Gwynne and Miller (2017) this shows that the typical graph distance displacement of the walk after $n$ steps is $n^{1/4 + o_n(1)}$, as conjectured by Benjamini and Curien (2013). More generally, we show that the simple random walks on a certain family of random planar maps in the $γ$-Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) universality class for $γ\in (0,2)$---including spanning t…
